Based on bartles taxonomy of player types I feel that sea of thieves catered a bit too heavy to the clubs (pvper's) and diamonds (achievers) while slowly drip feeding the spades (explorers) and hearts (socializers). Clubs and diamonds tend to burn out when interacting purely with each other and themselves. Perhaps if they focused a bit more on the spades and hearts a bit earlier on they may have avoided the down turns.
