That book "What a woman of 45 ought to know" piqued my interest so I researched and it's actually a rare and early discussion about menopause by a suffragist and doctor, written in 1902! As someone going through perimenopause I really want to see how women from this time viewed it. The book has been digitalised by Harvard Library ;)

I'm old and have a LOT of 'knickknacks" as we used to call them, so I change them out fairly often. It's fun to match that orange vase with the orangish candle and put it in front of the wall hanging it matches, or to make a display of the frogs my granddaughter sewed out of felt with a rock she gave us. So yeah, those things are NEVER permanent, every time I dust, something will change. Your room now looks as though it's evolved over time - not like you're trying to sell cheap furniture. What I mean is that it looks real - as though you have lived in the house that maybe was a family home and those could be Grandpa's books or his mother's vases. It's fun to mix things that weren't made in a factory in this century.

The plain glass is a vase for growing a hyacinth! Half fill the vase with water and place the bulb on top, ensuring water doesn't touch the bulb. Place in a dark place, maintaining water levels, until roots and and shoot appear. Take into the light - not bright sunlight - and enjoy watching the flower bloom and the scent that will fill your room!. Google for more explicit instructions,

A few years ago I got an antique(?) rug for my sewing room and maybe 6 months after while at the thrift store I kept coming back to a small wall cabinet with a chicken feed bag front and painted wood. I didn’t know why I kept going and looking at it but just trusted my instincts and brought it home… it’s the exact color pallet of the rug with very desaturated red/pink blue and beige. Still need to make room on the wall for it but it’s just chilling on the floor for now. Eventually going to repaint the walls to just embrace the colors of the rugs/cabinet even though I’m not a fan of pink (as I look at the antique pink couch also in that room that I got from the thrift stores dumpster for free).

Do you know what was so wonderful about this video for me? As someone who wants to create her own esthetic spaces in my 1st house, I have struggled with the feeling that "some people are just really talented decorators" and they can instantly create beautiful spaces. Seeing you do what I need to do: fuss with everything and move it all a bunch of times to find the right "feel" made me feel so relieved with what I saw as my struggles to decorate well. This was so uplifting! ❤

omg, most excellent, that was EXACTLY the phenomenon I wanted to tackle/combat/break down in this video! I have PLENTY of examples of things I've tried that I ultimately didn't love, but they were fun to try, and I learned from it - both in terms of talent/what things generally look good together, but also what I PERSONALLY tend to prefer in terms of asesthetics. It is NEVER a one-and-done thing, it's always a process, but that entire process virtually never makes it onto social media for a whole host of reasons.... SO GO FORTH AND DECORATE! Don't be afraid to make mistakes - you will learn from them, and as long as you haven't dropped a ton of money on it, you can always tweak, learn, improve, discover your own aesthetic... it's just a process, and one that should hopefully be fun and ongoing!

I'm sure there's someone trained in home design that could tell us WHY everything you chose works, but honestly, I don't care. Maybe I love this so much because this is the way I go about "dressing" a room as well: assembling what I already have and thrifting what I need. You could call it more of an intuitive decorating process.
Using various wood tones implies a collection made over time, which is perfect for a century old home and blending old and newer pieces is emotionally grounding to me.
When you laid down the carpet in that room and added the record cabinet, I actually FELT the room come into focus! Thank you for sharing your quandaries and final decisions. I know folks will be encouraged to try new things with your videos.

It is the same here. Most decorative pieces we have are just not being chosen because they fit, they are presents from dear friends or even long dead relatives. Or pieces from my or my husband's childhood, things we love even if they don't fit together. From time to time we try (at least my spaceships have a place together, and my skeleton works great with his grateful dead artwork) but just because we happen to have a red couch I don't want to have everything in reds. I am certainly a fan of placing a nice piece of cloth over a piece of wood that doesn’t look very good. It’s not the perfect fix, because that would involve redoing the furniture, but until then it will work great. I was just talking to my husband yesterday about the fact that you’re doing all of these semi-temporary rooms just so you can have some more decent to live until you can actually do them. I bet I would just leave it all the way it is until I got done, but if you don’t like living in that situation, I understand.

This was so motivating for me. I tend to think and think and think. I need to just futz and fiddle. Maybe then I’ll have a decorated house after two years.

    • @shannonmakessomethingelse

Just remember that two years from now, you'll be two years older, and (we're going to assume) you'll still have a roof over your head and a place to call 'home' ...the question is just whether you'll have some decorating futzing experience under your belt or not.
Or if that does do it for you, ask: what are the consequences of not immediately succeeding? Room decorating feels like a pretty low stakes situation (or at least you can make it low stakes by starting small and not investing tons of $$ into the furnishings), so all that happens is that you'll learn what you like and prefer, and probably also some things that you don't love. You'll have 'wasted' some time, sure, but if you enjoyed the process and learned some things along the way, was it really wasted?

I remember taking a rug to the tip (what we call a household recycling centre in the U.K.) and we all know the stuff the staff want is put at the end of the gangway and as soon as I pulled out the rug a helpful staff member offered to carry that in for me, which I let him so I could grab other stuff and when I seen him putting it in the gangway I informed him my cat had had horrific diarrhea all over the rug and we couldn’t get it clean. His poor face, I could tell he was sad he had offered his services for nothing but to be fair they are there to help everyone, not just the people with cool stuff they want to stash for themselves 😂

I took a room to create a sewing room and use leftover paint, a set of curtains I got for$1, used furniture I painted, and some plastic folding tables. Do I like them? Nope, but they will work f or now.I also brought up a milk glass cake stand and several other things, including an antique book given to my grandfather in the year 1878. You and I have a kindred spirit for being a cryptic and how we go about finding our Treasures ......Some decorators have curtains made with two tones on them. So if you find another fabric that would go on those and you want to take the Rings off and like on the bottom or top... another decorating trick is using Muslim drop cloths for painting. You can dye them you can paint them you stencil them they even make carpets for antique floors. Just thought I'd throw some ideas out there for you that are inexpensive paint is easy to come by from all kinds of sources without much cost if any cost. I personally have never painted fabric with like thinned out latex paint or anything but it looks like fun and it would be inexpensive experiments just suggest just ideas not trying to tell you what to do. You jogged my memory from other very creative folk like you and I have used some of these in my very old house. I pick things up off the street all the time I did the other night and I was thrifting yesterday and for $3 found a gorgeous Crystal vase. I think this one might go in the bathroom to pick Combs and brushes in. Absolutely is so much fun thank you for sharing❤

Our bedroom colour scheme of blue tones, beige and white definitely exists because of one blue little box with painted flowers on it, called a Palm Sunday box.
It was a tradition, a suitor gave their intended such a beautifully painted box, filled with sweets and rumour was, that it was common do have the circumference of the intended‘s thigh measurement…

This video gave me a lightbulb moment about a way I could incorporate my late mom’s memory into a very niche section of decor in my house. Two walls of my bedroom are jokingly named the “rich white people” walls. It started when my Nana gave me a beautifully framed print of Le Déjeuner des canotiers, and with my mom’s help I’ve thrifted or been given a bunch of other pieces of art of rich white people.
When I saw that same painting in your book that you were looking through, it reminded me of a book of art my mom gave me shortly before she died. It was a book of art and poems all about a mother’s love for her daughter. What better way to add on to my favorite wall of art than with a piece or two from the book that was quite literally filled with love ❤
