- Before Kim Mulkey became a 3-time national champion coach at Baylor, she led Louisiana Tech to back-to-back title games as a play-making 5-4 point guard. Watch highlights of Mulkey as a player from Louisiana Tech's inaugural NCAA title in 1982 against Cheyney and its runner-up finish to USC in 1983. Mulkey currently coaches LSU, after 21 years at Baylor.

I lived in Ruston, La. at the time and I watched that game LIVE! My daddy would holler through the house to me, “Kim Mulkey’s playing!” I would run to watch the game. That continued until the day he died in 10/2011. He’d holler, “Kim Mulkey’s team is playing!” And I would run to watch the game with him and Mama. He died just before Baylor won the Championship in 2012. Once he hollered, “Kim Mulkey’s team is playing! Brittany Griner might dunk it!” She DID dunk it in the Championship game and Kim, literally, turned and stomped her foot IN THE AIR! Hahaha! I kept rewinding it just to see her so that again and again. Mama and I watched for the next 9 years. I’ve had to watch them alone now, since 9/2020. I will watch until I die or she retires! She is just as feisty and smart today and she was then. She excels at EVERYTHING SHE DOES!

That was great hearing all those names being called! Cynthia Cooper was one of my favorite players to watch!
The McGee twins were also on that USC team, such a loaded team. Pamela also played in the WNBA and her son in the NBA and daughter once played in the WNBA.

I believe this was back when the rules said you could only dribble with your hand on top of the ball. If your hand was on the side of the ball it was called a carry and you could be whistled by the ref. So if these clips look like the ball-handlers are less skilled than today's players that is a BIG REASON WHY.
That takes far more skill.
It's way harder for sure.
The women also played with a larger ball back then … that sounds odd … What I mean is, they played with the same-sized ball the men have … that sounds even odder … You get my meaning.
She's a much better passer than anything I see today male or female ,college or pro. Bounce passes are just precise and in stride.

Kim may have been small but she was fearless, even though she and her team lost to USC in the championship game in '84 (I believe) she was not and had no fear guarding Cheryl Miller.

I remember that charge they called on kim mulkey that was clearly blocking l tech was down 2 and should have been rewarded 2 free throws.
I dont know which year..but mulkey eon 2 national championships..1 ncaa and 1 whatever it was prior to ncaa..then she lost 1 to usc...of course mulkey played under pat summit in the 1984 olympics with chery miller...on the mens team was sone guy named Michael jordan😊

50s to 2000s there was no restricted zone or areas when u can take a charge.. Stockton the king of charging fouls used it in the backcourt.. Know your facts don't spit dumb words

Flashback 1979; there was a huge holiday tournament on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I was finishing up roofing a house for my dad, I was 19 and on break from college (I was playing Junior College basketball). They were playing some of the games at different gyms in the area. They were playing some girl's games at my old high school (d'Iberville high school). d'Iberville high school was playing Hammond high school. We had a girl (Sandra Rushing) who was a great player and later signed with Alabama. The one thing that grabbed my attention was this little guard from Hammond that lit it up. I was so impressed with the way she played! I asked Tommy Hengen our girl's coach "Who was that little guard from Hammond" he told me her name was Kim Mulkey. I'm a UCONN fan. However, I loved the way she played, and I love her coaching style. She will have LSU in the Final Four!

I remember back in the early 1980s being stationed in a country (the Netherlands) with very little English speaking television programming. The VCR was a new innovation, so we watched videos sent to us from family members in the US of American television sports and other programming. We got the videos about two weeks after they were recorded. I remember watching her play on one of the videos l received from home. I still have those videos today in 2023.
As a person who is also not that tall to play B-ball, this makes me happy to see. My favorite moment 2:33 She has that same energy then and now!
The evolution of the game both physically and skillfully has made players less than 5’5 a complete liability in todays game. It’s why she is an outstanding coach. Nowadays Kim wouldn’t recruit that player at LSU or at Baylor.

2:09 This is literally one of the greatest passes you will ever see. She predicted the movement of her offense and beat past 3 defenders to deliver the ball. This is all done in a moments notice with no time to think. Girl has a brilliant mind. I don't know anything about her but I won't be surprised to learn she is still unstoppable at whatever she is doing in life.

I remember this game, but I was rooting for USC when Cynthia Cooper played for USC. First time I started watching women’s basketball and I have been watching women basketball since 1982. USC vs Louisiana Tech was a HUGE game. Love Kim Mulkey and Dawn Staley 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

She was remarkable. I watched La. Tech some back then. It was La. Tech, USC, and Old Dominion as the big three back then. Later, Tenn. took over for years.
Now I can see how Mulkey gets her tenacity as a coach…she looked very fierce as a player. I admire her as both and the way she molded my favorite women’s basketball player Britney Griner into a great competitor on the court.

You must have never seen Dana Evans play. Currently on the Sky roster, plays in the Euro Leagues and she played for Louisville in college. She's 5'5 and has a killer shot. Definitely holds her own against all the bigs out there.

Debra Rodman, Dennis' Sister. She was All American I believe. From my old neighbor hood in Dallas, TX. He has another sister ( Rhonda) that played at Stephen F Auston University as well.

@@charlesroquemore839Wasn’t the Rodman at SFA named Kim? Anyway, (possible) fun fact: Though Kim and Debra entered college before Dennis, I believe both are younger than him. Dennis didn’t go to college right out of high school and was 25 years old as an NBA rookie.
Pam and Paula McGee at USC. Pam was an ‘84 Olympian and is JaVale’s mom. Tech’s Pam Kelly. Angela Turner, Janice Lawrence and Pam Gant were All-Americans at some point in their careers too; they just aren’t well known.
If the WNBA hadn’t been born when she was already 34 years old, Cynthia Cooper would have joined the obscure talent scrap heap too. She had a strong resume (Olympics, World Championships, etc.), but it took the WNBA stamp of approval to elevate her to all-time great status.
Robin Roberts would have been a rival at SE Louisiana.

At the 2:44 mark, yeah I agree no way KIM MULKEY'S feet were planted before contact. Great players often get the benefit. No ref instant replays or challenges back then I assume.
Technically your feet do not have to be set if the offensive player initiates contact without leaving their feet.
@Easy E Network would u consider, dribbling horizontally down the baseline (clear when she starts goin) to escape a trap, to be "initiating contact? Or does running into someone who has nowhere else to go sound more like initiating ?

No one is a woman’s basketball fan. It’s usually boring and these highlights are fundamental basketball which you can see in any pickup game
This is an extraordinary woman from every level of life -great H.S player/ Great College player and VALEDICTORIAN/ GREAT Olympian-Gold Medalist/ Great Mother/ and now a GREAT COACH. A rare person indeed!
