They were not just teammates on a variety of U.S. national basketball teams, but sometime roommates. The admiration and affection between Iowa’s Caitlin Clark and Louisville’s Hailey Van Lith is real, and runs deep.
“Great person off the court, really funny, great sense of humor,’’ Van Lith said Saturday while describing Clark. “I mean, I have supported her through her college career and she’s supported me through mine.”
But that doesn’t mean each didn’t want to bury the other one Sunday in an NCAA women’s regional game at Climate Pledge Arena, with a berth in the Final Four on the line. And so for 40 minutes, Iowa and Louisville waged a frenetic, intense and passionate battle, with those two inevitably at the forefront - and Iowa getting the ultimate celebration behind an epic performance by Clark.
It was a basketball purist’s dream - but this matchup might have been even more alluring to a casual fan who just loves to see fun, high-scoring basketball at the highest level, spiced by an individual performance that will go instantly into the annals of tournament lore.
Caitlin Clark’s 41-point triple-double sends Iowa women to Final Four
A week ago, we had Trout vs. Ohtani. For women’s basketball fans, Clark vs. Van Lith had similar resonance. And it was Clark and the Hawkeyes who came out on top 97-83 as the junior put on a dazzling display of her all-around game.
Clark not only turned in a triple-double, the 12th of her career, but the first one in NCAA women’s tournament history with at least 30 points - and for good measure she finished with 41 points to go with 12 assists and 10 rebounds. No men’s or women’s player in the NCAA tournament has ever had a 40-point game in a triple-double. The only player with 30 points and 10 assists in an NCAA tournament game since 2000 is Washington’s Kelsey Plum (2017), whose all-time scoring record Clark is on target to surpass.
After the clock hit zero, Clark made it a point to hunt down the game ball to save for posterity.
“I did want the game ball, so I chucked it to my dad. I hope they get out of the arena,’’ she said with a laugh. “I told them to run; I’ll get it later at the hotel.”
Iowa, which lives off its transition game, broke it open in the second half with a flurry of fast breaks and dazzling three-point shooting - and not just by Clark. By the fourth quarter, the only mysteries were whether Clark would get her triple-double, would she hit 40, and would the Hawkeyes crack triple-digits. Answers: Yes (getting her 10th rebound in the final minute); yes, on two free throws with 27 seconds remaining that Clark punctuated with an ecstatic fist pump; and no, not quite, but Iowa could care less as it advanced to its first Final Four since 1993.
“I don’t know if it’s really sunk in yet,’’ said Iowa coach Lisa Bluder, wearing remnants of the cut-down net around her neck. “This group is amazing. To do things you love with people you love, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
“About only people who believed were me and Coach when I first committed to her,” Clark added. “A lot of people told me it would never happen when I came to Iowa. She believed in me, which is all that really mattered, and we made the locker room believe.”
Van Lith, with her large cheering section from Cashmere back on hand, finished with 27 points, but her Cardinals were no match for the offensive precision of Iowa. And, especially, they had no answers for Clark, who was feeling it from the beginning and didn’t slow down until Bluder pulled her out in the final seconds to honor her star with an ovation from the fans - and a long, heartfelt hug between the two.
Simply put, Clark is a revelation. She has the capacity to become the face of women’s college basketball, if she isn’t already. She might be the best show in college basketball, men’s or women’s. Think Pistol Pete Maravich crossed with Sue Bird (who made a surprise appearance at Iowa’s shoot-around) with a dash of Steph Curry.
Next in line for Iowa is a likely Final Four matchup in Dallas with South Carolina, which has surpassed Connecticut as the dominant force in the women’s game. But if Iowa plays at the same pace, with the same efficiency, toughness, and outside shooting touch as it did Sunday, it won’t be a given that the unbeaten Gamecocks run their record to 37-0 (provided they get past Maryland on Monday).

Clark is obviously one of if not the best shooter in the country but she also has absolutely incredible court awareness and vision as a passer. She’s unbelievable.

I don't know who LSU played to get to where they were in the championship, but Iowa had Georgia who played dirtier than a mud pile, Colorado, Louisville as seen here, and undefeated in 42 straight games, S.C. LSU appeared more fresh than Iowa in that game. No excuses, LSU was the better team that day but the refs weren't helping any. Yes the number of fouls were about the same, but the type of fouls was more harmful to Iowa. I know damn well that if Iowa would have won, some heads would have rolled from the big time betters. I don't like to reach for flimsy excuses so I'll just say LSU had the better team that day. I would love to see a rematch next year.

@@voguehaven5154 No, Iowa had the players, but they just weren't hitting their shots. I was worried about this year after they lost Czinano and Warnock but there are 3 solid bigs who have filled their shoes nicely so far. It's really too early to say since they aren't into conference play yet but I would love to see them in the championship game again.

There’s women’s college basketball and then theirs Clark. She is on a whole other level than anyone else. Everyone talks about her 3s but her court vision and her passes my god.

Bird led his team with a similar style. It makes for some fun basketball, and it can cut teams to pieces.
I hope when she gets into the WNBA she starts trash talking like Bird used to. I'd pay just to watch her play, but add in some Birdlike trash talk and even NBA fans will start watching

VL is a shooter, Clark is all-around. Neither are imposing physically, which is refreshing.
Van Lith is very good at getting her shot, at drawing fouls, and at shooting free throws (85%). Her field goal percentage is mediocre from both two-point (46%) and three-point (34%) range. Her assist/turnover ratio is 0.99.
Clark is simply better. She is able to get her shots, draws fouls, and shoots well from two-point (55%) and three-point (38%) range as well as from the foul line (86%). Her assist/turnover ratio is 1.76. She scores more points (27.2 to 15.4), grabs more rebounds (7.0 to 4.4), and garners more assists (8.0 to 4.5) than van Lith.
Clark has set a new standard for ladies basketball to achieve themselves. She is a rare talent.
Clark is absolutely amazing; seems like the only way you can slow her down is to mug her and have officials ignore it much like the Indiana / Iowa game.
I think women’s basketball is so boring but I will watch Clark. She is an entertainer for sure.

Two totally different players and play styles. Both players are great. Caitlin Clark is a Playmaking Shot Creator. Hailey Van Lith is a 3 Level Scorer. Caitlin is the facilitator for her team. Hailey is called on too just get buckets. Both need to work more on their defense. Basketball is a complete game. You have to play both ends 90 feet.

Thats part of her game that makes her so great. She may shoot it some times and at other times dish it off. Its why she has so many assists too. Hard to defend that when you dont know whether to commit to her shooting only to get burned by a quick pass.
First time I ever cried for a basketball game.
In my opinion......Van Lith was taking a lot of smack out there (during the whole game), that's why Clark did the "can't see me know" gesture. Got a feeling if you review the whole game, Vah Lith was guilty of talking trash herself, which lead up to the incident.
I'm pretty sure Caitlin actually explained what happened with that gestures. It was apparently not even mentioned for van lith

For the people who are saying Caitlin Clark won't get her 40 shots per game in the WNBA, she doesn't need to shoot because of her talent and court awareness she takes defenders away from her teammates and hits them open or not her delivery puts her teammates in positions to score. Caitlin Clark is a 6t PG. The avg height for a WNBA pg is 5'8". The average height of a WNBA center is 6'5". She's basically a 6'4"-6'7" point gaurd..... with her skill set that just isn't fair lol

Caitlin Clark is a force of nature.
Clark is just playing a different game to everyone else. She has the skills but the basketball IQ just looks a level above. Her shooting is efficient and dangerous but her team mates get good looks as well. NBA has Wemby as a unicorn, hopefully Clark can keep this up in the pros and be the WNBA unicorn.
