Am I the only one seriously digging the singles so far? I do agree on this particular song the vocals are buried, but I felt the vocal balance was just fine on the previous 2. That's just me though 🤷🏼♂️
I actually like this new direction more for them but I do agree that the vocals were a bit buried but overall still prefer these singles over their old stuff
I definitely prefer The Dark Pool, but while the vocals are weirdly produced on this one, I prefer it over Casanova. Arkangel is still my favorite. Instrumentals made this one for me. I’m still on the fence.
I really really love arkangel, Casanova is a cool fun song, don’t care much for this one. But I’m a dark pool guy too. Never cared much for the deftones kinda stuff
Only con for me was how they drowned vocals in effects because I really want to hear Jacob’s clean vocals and I get that it’s a stylistic choice but it was hard to understand what was going on without having to take a look at the lyrics because of the effects on the vocals but instrumentals on this were freaking amazing
I personally love the mix. Vocals are being utilised as an instrument and adding the the atmosphere. Adore it. Jacob shines both above and in the mix as a prominent vocalist or with stylistic shoegazey vocals like this. Insane song, same with Arkangel, love both.
Honestly, I enjoyed all three singles more than The Dark Pool haha! I actually think it sounds much more unique than their first album. And when people complain about the mix on these new tracks I'm like... Go listen to TDP again and hear how muffled it sounds compared to this new material. I understand wanting to hear the vocals a bit more, but me I like what they're doing.
Dude. I completely agree with you. I fuck with these new singles, I honestly wasn't even a Thornhill fan before these singles came out, but hearing their new music, it's like they're reshaping and redefining metal/metalcore and it's honestly like it's evolving into something unique and interesting and completely non-generic.
Tbh I haven't hear their last album but really love these three singles so far, find his vocals have a bit of a radioesque highs and the wall of sound they do is surprisingly catchy. Excited for the album!
Deftones went through the same thing from Adrenaline and Around the fur to White Pony. At the time Deftones fans didn’t really dig White Pony either, it was a huge departure from their previous two albums. 20 years later and here we are again, Metalcore is experimenting and genre bending and I’m totally here for it. I mean they did say big influences for them were Radiohead, Karnivool (which are very Deftones inspired to begin with) and Architects (also Deftones inspired, spiritually) so it really shouldn’t come as a shock they’re coming to this sound organically
As someone who didn't care about The Dark Pool, I'm loving the new singles. Such a unique fusion in a total modern context. You can't get this from anywhere else, so vibey so moody so dreamy. That's why I think this band is better than it has ever been and a stand out in the scene
For sure, I adore TDP but these new singles give me the same feeling as White Pony for example, and you just don't really get that from any other modern band, not even deftones themselves lol
For me, it’s hard to top The Dark Pool, but they don’t need to. I love the shoegaze sound so I find these 3 singles are amazing. Reminds me of the change of sound Hundredth made. It’s chunky, ‘dreamy’ emotional, it just flows really well. Still don’t love the effect on the voice, hopefully that grows on me. So far I’m just happy to hear more great music, all I hope for
I definitely think Hundredth's change in style was much more drastic than Thornhill's, but yeah, your point stands, haha. I agree and I like this single the most out of the three.
I actually like the change up they’ve made…bands always get shit on for sounding the same…seems to me Thornhill wants to showcase their skills and how they don’t plan on the same type of music over and over…I like what they’ve done it’s not a home run for me but it’s still good
In an interview, Jacob said he hasn’t listened to deftones and only a couple muse songs! So most of his vocal inspiration comes from justin timberlake for some of the new stuff
I listen to mostly "extreme" metal. A lot of black metal and death, but a good amount of metalcore and mathcore too. I usually hate clean vocals in metal apart from Loathe and Counterparts but God damnit, some of these song songs on this album, especially Hollywood give me chills. I love it
i actually like this direction more than their previous one, it makes them stand out and yea the only downside of these new songs are the vocals being buried.. it'll be interesting to hear this songs on a live album if they'll ever make one in the future
For me it’s the second half of the song that really does it with the chunky unexpected chugs and sharp drumming. Think the vocals are indeed a lil far in the mix but it sounds tight to me 🤷
Hey dude I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying your content! I was an absolutely massive fan of The Dark Pool, hammered it like 100 times during the pandemic. When I first caught wind of the new singles I was tempted to have a similar take regarding the washed mix, but at the end of the day? This is UNIQUE, man! It works in such a bizarre way. I've always felt his vocals were a little drowned out, but now they're transforming it into its own style. Like industrial meets ethereal. And their drummer is a monster. Can't wait for the full album.
i had a very similar reaction. the thing is, i love the ideas that they have in this song, but the execution misses the mark a tiny bit. the vocals are too sonically different from the instrumental and fill it up a bit too much. less saturation in the vocals and letting the classic thornhill ambience come through a tiny bit would’ve saved the track for me.
Still gotta get used to their "new" sound, but "The Dark Pool Part 2" would not have worked at all. This band is - I think - a band which keeps developing and I am really thrilled what that whole album package may sound like.
@@l4zrh4wk Probably. I've heard even more about Void Of Vision's Ep's. With a similar visual style. By the way musically totally different & new touches but more for me. New VOV is aoty for me. All songs are bangers on! Chronicles II: Heaven & Chronicles I:Lust too
I love LOVE the Dark Pool, but I am happy to try and see them do something new. It's kind of The Killers meet the Deftones. I do wish his vocals were more clean though, as that's one of the things I love best about Thornhill. They are definitely trying to go glam on this new album, I feel.
I never heard thornhill before and this song popped in my Spotify and hit me hard . Love this shit and I’m a big deftones fan since adrenaline . Just my opinion , this is jammin.
I didn't like the mix at first, but after reading the lyrics and thinking about the whole vibe that I think the album is going for I think it's a really really cool vibe
Man that intro killed me xD Honestly, i think this band is leaning towards the RIGHT direction. They are so creative and their sound is actually unique (i know we can find some deftones vibes) So yeah i hope that they will keep growing on that particular style that they are adopting/creating. Much love to Thornhill !!!
I could see how this is likeable to some people and its not horrible, but compared to The Dark Pool its extremely disappointing. That's one of my favorite albums of all time and I was so excited to see how Thornhill would build from there but they decided to instead tear down everything they built with that sound. This is one of those instances where I genuinely think they should have just renamed the band or something because its like Tyler The Creator going from R&B to Brooklyn Drill Rap or some shit lol
I have to say, all of the singles grew on me. I'm excited for the album, but I 100% get all of the criticism. It will be interesting to see how the album plays out. Jacob said in an interview that he thought releasing Casanova as the first single would be the safest way to go about the release, and I'm not sure if that scares me or not considering its a complete 180 to their previous work.
Agree about the vox in the mix, should be more present...other than that I thought it's very good! I like their new sound, it feels fresh and interesting to me, and I don't think it's departing as much from their core sound as you might think, but still quite a bit, which can be a shock. First time I listened to Casanova I was like what the heck is this? Now I spin it all the time, and I have to say it's probably the strongest out of all the singles so far...but this one is nice too
Having not actually heard the Dark Pool yet, I'm really enjoying enjoy this sound and this style of music from Thornhill. Maybe that will change when I finally get around to listening to TDP though
I wouldn't be surprised if you end up not liking it now. The direction change is quite big, you'll be in for a surprise. TDP is considered a masterpiece though.
I totally understand your point of view on this, but as someone who listens to shoegaze a lot this song is just ear candy and perfectt❤️❤️❤️ Much love my G❤️❤️
I too think this is an amazing album and the more I listen to it the more I like it. If you're a fan of shoegaze have you checked out the band Loathe? Loathe has found a way to mix metal, hardcore, and shoegaze.
I do find this sound like a more "sexier" sound for metal and rock, which i love. But i miss the high pitch lovely sound of the vocals. Anyway, great video 👌🏻
I said it once and I say it again, it sounds like HIM on Steroids :D I do really dig it - it's different yes, but really good. The only thing that won't work for me is the mix of the vox.
As someone who has only heard the new singles I must say this was pretty good. If it came up on shuffle I probably wouldn’t skip it but it’s not anything I would actively go to listen to.
Vocals need to be higher in the mix for sure. As others have said, completely drowned in effects. But man I love this sound and can't wait for this album.
I absolutely love TDP but love the new stuff even more!....seeing a special show next week in Brisbane of them playing Heroine in its entirety 3 months before release, will let ya know how it is ;)
metalcore is having a deftonesy shoegaze moment and im very here for it. Though vocally these guys seem to going in a more Musey / Killers-ish direction which is pretty cool and original (for this scene). Totally get though why fans of the Dark Pool are kinda scratching their heads here. Maybe the band sees the aussie-core sound fizzling out at some point? A lot of those bands sound pretty much the same imo, and this separates them from the pack in a way. Maybe it won't work, but it seems like they're going for a risk to reach new fans
Great reaction. Here’s my take: yes, The Dark Pool is a modern masterpiece and it was my album of the year when it came out. There is definitely something different thematically about each of these singles. You can see it in the music videos too. When they announced the album title as “Heroine”, it started to make sense to me. The videos and singles have this sort of dark glam, haze like vibe to them. Very stereotypical drugs and sex Hollywood like. There’s a deeper sort of tragedy to the lyrics and themes of the songs. I think this new album is going to be sort of a concept album. Especially with reoccurring themes like The Dark Pool. I’m very excited to see where this goes. 🤘
The production choices are really bracing, but about halfway through the song my ears adjusted and I really liked it. Lots of Deftonesy dreamy sounds and a dynamic song that moved around a bit. Pretty cool!
If you did not like the new Thornhill like me. I recommend the new EP'S the Void of Vision. They have a visual style similar to Heroine but with a sound more similar to TDP and you may like it. All the songs are outstanding. Very top.
There was distortion on the vocals on Arkangel and Casanova too, but there were parts that he shined through on them. This one is real muddy though. I love the instrumentals of the band but Jacob is SO good for him to just be stuck within the mix. If they want that late 80s aesthetics, i get it, but the audio content suffers a bit.
Bing bong. it’s funny cuz the ppl complaining about the vocals being buried in the mix be the same ppl who love loathe vocals. However, I’d prefer more rhythmic vocals as opposed to his distant crooning. I do think it’d be cooler if thornhill was taking these influences and blending them more cohesively with there pre-established sound but I’m still enjoying what they’re giving us. At least it’s interesting.
This reminds me of BMTH’s evolution which was actually a regression to a more generic pop influenced sound after TIAH which was a step forward We don’t need deftones meets muse meets smashing pumpkins meets whatever, we had these bands and we had thornhill
Thornhill have such an authentic, mature approach to the way they do music. Their experimentation with new genres feels like an earnest attempt to explore and expand their own abilities to create music, rather than some empty vapid gesture to an untapped sales demographic.
I think that the new direction Thornhill is going in is MORE experimental than The Dark Pool. And don't get me wrong, TDP was my favorite album of 2019.
I mean outside of Loathe/Sleep Token no one else is even attempting these kind of fusion sounds. It’s fair to not like the single it’s got a weird structure for sure but in terms of texture and emotion, man it’s so distinct I have a hard time seeing people not vibe with it creatively.
If these new songs didn’t have the vocals drowned in effects. They would actually be really enjoyable. I’ve always enjoyed Thornhill but the effects really take away from Jacobs vocals. I’m conflicted on wether I like these songs or not.
Seeing them live next month and I’m so curious how theyre gonna execute their setlist lol I have some songs i like from The Dark Pool, but it’s not my favorite album. With that though this is my least favorite of the three singles thus far. I totally get where you’re coming from but i still think ima have a blast hearing Casanova and Arkangel live as much as i will with L&TM
Agree! I am no longer horny for the new thorny. They had their unique sound since the Butterfly Ep. I understand that they want to evolve as a band but there giving up all of their beautifull atmospheric sound. I loved Thema so much and they brought me through the pandemic but the new singles just make me sad 😭😭😭
I think the big problem with this album is the production and mixing.... There is a live studio version of Casanova that is so much better than the version on the album everyone needs to hear it. Jacob's vocals on that recording are clean and it reminds me why I like this band so much. They added distortion to his voice jams the vocals back in the mix... Not where they should be.
Am I insane for thinking this song is reminiscent of The Dark Pool? We get screams and a breakdown, the instruments are pretty heavy. Only issue is his vocals are buried.
I don't think I would've enjoyed a TDP2. In my opinion it wouldn't be that cool if they just kept making the same "emotional" djent. I love the new sound!
This band had absolutely no stand out potential originally to a point where I never even gave their old music more than a once glance listen cause of how generic it was. It wasn’t until Casanova that I truly got hooked by this band. It got me to even go back and learn to like their older material more. I think the visual and sonic identity of this band is in its peak and I just don’t think its for you tbh. For whatever reason that may be. It just is what it is
Sounds like you're the opposite of what is happening with a lot of fans. For us TDP is an actual masterpiece, and the opposite feeling is now happening with the new material for a lot of us. It's so weird how that is, how some people have completely polar views on their music. To each their own I guess.
This is the best single out of the 3 new but I still miss The Dark Pool Thornhill. I can’t get enough of the old Thornhill. And the burried vocals are quite distracting.
This is the "best" single out of the 3 for me. The instrumentals are nice but I got a serious issues with them burying Jacobs great voice in the mix. Just feels wrong.
Still don't like their new sound but I will have to say that the instrumentals are really fun and good but the vocals completely ruin the songs for me, there's just way too much going on with them..
It just sounds like Muse to me..which is fine I guess..But 'Reptile' 'Lavendar' 'Lily and the Moon' & 'Where do we go...' are just so out on there own and unlike anything else out there. I love this band but I gotta agree with your 'cons'. But hey I'd still love to see them tour the UK 😄
Thank you, totally agreeing with you man! It just feels like the same stuff you heard a million times but ages ago with a few low tuned metalcore guitar riffs shoved in. Especially on this song, it was like just one long reverb tail with drums and a breakdown. Meh.
Why do people get such a hard on when bands changing their sound? Architects and now this band are the perfect example of change not being a good thing.
As always, totally agree with you. That's exactly what I said about the vocals. It's a huge turn off for me as well. I personally have 0 hype left for this record. I respect these guys and would totally support them, but I sadly can't get into that sound change, like not at all. It has to be the most recent sound change from one of my favorite bands in the core scene that I truly can't get onboard with in the last few years.
The melodys besides casanova havent stuck...their 1st album imo was way catchier in every sense...nothings as memorable as many here say id say as many agree this isnt very new or fresh its like everyones doing this grunge thing which is cool but theres nothing metal about this at all now which is fine but its doesnt stand out ...sad but oh well some enjoy it
I didn’t even bother finishing the song yesterday. Didn’t feel like “giving it a chance” or “letting this one grow on me.” If it doesn’t click then it doesn’t click. Plenty of other music to listen to.

They’re copying Deftones stylistically
@@CruciaLou i would call it inspiration
They're downright applying shoegaze elements to their sound, and I honestly think the results are beautiful.

Very top.
they said if people keep complaining their getting George Lever to drop the vocals down another -2dB xD best response, they're kidding tho, I hope
I really love this actually…….
Am i the only one who likes drowned out vocals? I always see people complaining about them but I think it sounds really good
There was distortion on the vocals on Arkangel and Casanova too, but there were parts that he shined through on them.
NEW TALLAH METALBIRB! BEST NU METAL BAND IN THE WORLD!
I just saw GC made a vid for it! I’m definitely interested, thanks man
This reminds me of BMTH’s evolution which was actually a regression to a more generic pop influenced sound after TIAH which was a step forward
We don’t need deftones meets muse meets smashing pumpkins meets whatever, we had these bands and we had thornhill
absolutely dig it man!
Thornhill have such an authentic, mature approach to the way they do music. Their experimentation with new genres feels like an earnest attempt to explore and expand their own abilities to create music, rather than some empty vapid gesture to an untapped sales demographic.
I enjoyed the Dark Pool, but nothing about it ever stood out to me. This isn't perfect by an means, but I'm finding it to be far more memorable.
I think that the new direction Thornhill is going in is MORE experimental than The Dark Pool. And don't get me wrong, TDP was my favorite album of 2019.
People are really divided over Thornhill’s new sound lol. But yeah I’m with you, I haven’t revisited any of these singles.
Seeing them live next month and I’m so curious how theyre gonna execute their setlist lol
I have some songs i like from The Dark Pool, but it’s not my favorite album. With that though this is my least favorite of the three singles thus far. I totally get where you’re coming from but i still think ima have a blast hearing Casanova and Arkangel live as much as i will with L&TM
this sounds amazing.
I was a little irritated at the first listen, but it definitely grew on me! It's like Muse and QOTSA had a lovechild
This is really cool sounding. So different from a lot out there. I dont know how much I like it but I do like the sound
Every band needs to copy thank you scientist for production quality
I wore The Dark Pool out HARD. As soon as it came out, I immediately wanted more, but these singles just aren’t doing it for me. Bummed.
That bridge sounds like a heavy early Coldplay
I think the big problem with this album is the production and mixing.... There is a live studio version of Casanova that is so much better than the version on the album everyone needs to hear it. Jacob's vocals on that recording are clean and it reminds me why I like this band so much. They added distortion to his voice jams the vocals back in the mix... Not where they should be.
I want the dark pool 2.
Am I insane for thinking this song is reminiscent of The Dark Pool? We get screams and a breakdown, the instruments are pretty heavy. Only issue is his vocals are buried.
Thats what I thought too, the athmospheric choices are very reminiscent of TDP
@@junommdnic2005 yeah it gives me Lilly or Red Summer vibes
@@neotradnous really? not trying to argue but those two songs are epic and almost operatic wheras this is just droney and bland.
Not even close
I don't think I would've enjoyed a TDP2. In my opinion it wouldn't be that cool if they just kept making the same "emotional" djent. I love the new sound!
I saw someone reacting to this music video and I listen to it on my own and the song was ok but I prefer arkangel it’s top tier in my opinion.
GROOVYWOOD
Absolutely love their new stuff, but I love Deftones so go figure
Hawny fo thawny
This is the "best" single out of the 3 for me. The instrumentals are nice but I got a serious issues with them burying Jacobs great voice in the mix. Just feels wrong.
Still don't like their new sound but I will have to say that the instrumentals are really fun and good but the vocals completely ruin the songs for me, there's just way too much going on with them..
We share the same opinion, vocals are completely buried with no reason at all
The dark pool was up there in my top of 2019 and so far while not terrible these singles are not doin much for me.
Its weird one. I like all 3 tracks but it feels like such a step backwards after the last album.
They need to rerecord his vocals and fire whoever did the vocal mix
As always, totally agree with you. That's exactly what I said about the vocals. It's a huge turn off for me as well. I personally have 0 hype left for this record. I respect these guys and would totally support them, but I sadly can't get into that sound change, like not at all. It has to be the most recent sound change from one of my favorite bands in the core scene that I truly can't get onboard with in the last few years.
This is shaping up to be their best release.
That chorus is really pretty but otherwise not exactly my jam. As someone who didn't like Thornhill that much before I think it's a cool track.
