That's a wrap everybody. Thank you for watching and supporting!
See you in the new year. Cheers 🍻
thank you for your fun content🤝🏽 ... see you in another (hopefully) great year!🫶🏽
TMBTE is just magical in how unique it is with the different sounds and storytelling bringing all three records together. It made me fall in love with music again because it’s such a refreshing approach the genre desperately needed. I completely agree with how you described it
I have never fallen in love with an album so much as I did with Take Me Back to Eden, Thank you, and thank you, Sleep Token
This was an absolutely insane year for metal
Sleep Token was my favorite album of the year by far, Silent Planet 2nd and Invent Animate 3rd. Never really listened to any of those bands before this year, so it was a great year for new music!
I agree with all 3 of your album picks! I also didn't really listen to these bands until this year! All 3 are so amazing!!
Take Me Back To Eden 🥇
to the grave easily had album of the year. sleep token is booty and only old ppl like this band
Very good list tbh, i have:
Invent Animate - Heavener
Johnny Booth - Moments Elsewhere
Silent Planet - Superbloom
Humanity's Last Breath - Ashen
To Kill Achilles - Recovery
Tesseract - War of Being
Holding Absence - The Noble Art of Self-Destruction
(not top 10, but the other albums i don't listen as much anymore or didn't return to, really)
It's dope to see other people have War of Being in their top 10. I feel like that album went very under the radar in the metal community
Ashen is my #3
I'm so surprised I'm not seeing Ashen in more lists. HLB are the ones pushing the boundaries of metal not Sleep Token lol
@@bigspice4419 Absolutely, Sleep Token is a quarter metal band, this means that there's much less metal than it could possibly be, yes some songs have more of prog metal elements but the big part of their last album was basically mainstream pop, it's not surprising for me that they're popular, but what's really surprising for me is that they're overrated in a metal community, this is weird.
Also Issues did similar thing years ago, yes they didn't have Shoegaze and Ambient, but they did it so well that it's really hard to beat in terms of that style. Vessels vocals are very controversial and personally i dislike it a lot, i know it's subjective but his vocals are probably my least favorite in this type of music in general, people being obsessed about it look simply weird to me.
@@Vixfor_ Yeah their popularity in the metal scene was surprising to me too. It feels like the reaction channel/nik nocturnal sphere of TH-cam comprises mostly of people whose musical tastes aren't actually different to pop listeners but can tolerate heavy music, as opposed to actual metalheads, if that makes sense. Not complaining, just something interesting that that album's release revealed about this community
Veil Of Maya was great this year! Honestly, Artificial Dose is probably one of my favorite Metalcore songs of all time! That chorus goes hard!
Dude that chromatic two-step in the beginning is absolutely brilliant. Marc's wizardry on the guitar is unparalleled.
Here is my top 10 and the honorable mention ! Amazing year for metal🤘🏻
1. In Flames - Foregone
2. Orbit Culture - Descent
3. As everything unfolds - Ultraviolet
4. Within Temptation - Bleed Out
5. Kamelot - The Awakening
6. Feuerschwanz - Fegefeuer
7. Xandria - The Wonders Still Awaiting
8. Avenged Sevenfold - Life is but a dream…
9. Blackbraid - Blackbraid II
10. Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags
Honorable mention !!!
Humanity’s last Breath - Ashen
The Abbey - Word of sin
August burns Red - Death Below
Currents - The death we seek
Death below was so overlooked this year, my personal no.1
This year, Sleep Token "Take Me Back To Eden" inspired me to stick to a daily routine, and it started off by listening to the entire album during my work morning. I got the opportunity to see them live in NY and I have tickets to see them again at Radio City Music Hall. Their songs give me goosebumps, and I haven't had that from a singer, a drummer and a collective set of artists together in a single song in a very long time. I have to agree with Sleep Token being #1, and probably my #1 favorite album in a VERY long time. Thanks METALBIRB, and because of your reviews of Sleep Token, I've come back from time to time to see what else you've been cooking up! Keep up the hard work and Good Luck in 2024!

LETS GO P5 #1
@@alexloomis4796 I think he just doesn't vibe with periphery as a whole as much as we do 😂 he likes Strangers Things for sure but yeah, to be honest I get his criticism towards the band but yeah, AOTY for sure
When the album came out I honestly could not stop listening to it for MONTHS! I get this year was crazy for new music, but I would still go back to this album, and it would be in heavy rotation.
@@alexloomis4796 I still can't stop listening to it 😂 it's because an obsession now

Thank you. I will definitely check some of these out. I knew that TMBTE was gonna be #1. Imho, it was the most surprising breath of fresh air. Im so happy metal is having the moment it deserves. 🤟
Not all metal albums but my top 5 of the year are

2) Take Me Back To Eden - Sleep Token
3) Back To The Water Below - Royal Blood
4) The Death We Seek - Currents
5) The Noble Art Of Self Destruction - Holding Absence
Thank you for making these lists. Metal has been kind of exploding the past year, so it's been tough for me to stay on top of every album that came out from bands I already follow and bands I've never heard of. Appreciate the work you're doing!
One can love or hate Sleep Token, at least thank them they are bringing so many new people to metal.
INCREMATE - "Unexposed" - nice Old School Death/Thrash Metal from Germany 🤘
I 100% agree that ST is AOTY, but I am equally excited to see Johnny Booth so high on this list as well. Phenomenal record.
My top ten:
1. August Burns Red - Death Below
2. The Ongoing Concept - Again
3. Unprocessed - …And Everything in Between
4. Johnny Booth - Moments Elsewhere

6. Unearth - The Wretched;The Ruinous
7. Dying Wish - Symptoms of Survival
8. Orbit Culture - Descent
9. Silent Planet - SUPERBLOOM
10. Invent Animate - Heavener
I assumed TMBTE would be #1 (I ADORE this record) but seeing Heavener at 3 on your list is incredible. It's my favourite album of the year and after how much criticism you've given them in the past, I'm so happy that you love it. It's easily one of my favourite records of the last 5 years.
Johnny Booth/Unprocessed/Invent Animate would be my picks for this year. Actually i got to check out Johnny Booth because of "Asymetrical" mention in one of Your top breakdown videos. Since then They are one of my go to metalcore bands, Firsthand Accoutns was such banger album
Same exact top 3 as me! Then 4 was Jakub Zytecki's. Thankyou so much for introducing us to so many good artists. Been loving the streams and the videos. Looking forward to another good year for metal in 2024!!

2023 was a phenomenal year of music. Thanks for sharing another year with us, Birb! Here's to 2024 🤘🤘
Great year for metal in general! Thanks for all the entertainment throughout the year birb! Two albums amongst my favorites that don't get mentioned as much as the rest were In Flames & Guilt Trip, great albums. But probably my favorite and most listened to album of the year was THRICE - The Artist in the Ambulance which I found only because of your reaction. I love that album so much, so thanks for that.
1. VRSTY-Levitate
2. Sleep token - TMTE
3. Invent Animate Heavener
4, ignea - Dreams of Lands Unseen
5. Rise to the Sky - two years of Grief
EP of the year is definitely, God Smiles Upon The Callous Daoboys ❤
For me, an honorific mention to Beartooth 's "The Surface". How a metal band could evolve in music and concept about their lyrics? Well, that album is the answer
What I love about music, is that we all have our own taste, but the feelings the music creates are basically the same. My top 2 albums of the year are Heavener (2) and The Death We Seek (1). But I feel the excitement when you talk about your top 2 albums and I can relate. 2023 was a fantastic year and I hope, we get more bangers this year. Happy New Year, Metalbirb.
Aviations took me be surprise such an awesome sounding band. They're like my go to when I just wanna listen to chill prog metal. Beartooth - The Surface also criminally underrated album was such a really soul soothing album for me, Caleb just singing his heart out and so many positive vibes on it. I pretend I don't like Sleep Token and try to promote other bands but undeniable they brought a banger album out.
Wow, several of our top 10 overlap, but you had a couple of albums I missed... which provides some awesome NYE listening - thanks! See you in 2024.
This is a great list. Lot of overlap with mine. Also put a couple in that I forgot had come out this year. Gonna have to start going back and relistening to stuff from earlier this year.
Thanks for all you do with your channel!
Seeing Invent Animate in your Top 3 speaks a lot and I am very happy for them. Great top btw. Another great video from you. Happy New Year and I wish you the best in this year and thank you for your hard work.
I watched sometimes your videos but after what i saw u saying about that enormous, incredible and unbelievable record that is Take me back to Eden, you earn my subscription.
PS: I am a little bit sad to not see "Life is But a Dream", but that's ok ahaha
Yo i found some new awesome bands, thanks birb
These are my top 5 metal albums:
1: TesseracT - War Of Being
2: Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre
3: Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden
4: Aviations - Luminaria
5: Bury Tomorrow - The Seventh Sun
My number one album in general though is Hozier - Unreal Unearth. Absolute masterpiece
This year for me helped me broaden my taste in music, if slightly that is.
1 - Take Me Back To Eden by Sleep Token

3 - Maps by Billy Woods & Kenny Segal
4 - Heavener by Invent Animate

8 - softscars by yeule
9 - Luminescent Bridge by Blood Incantation (Only a two song EP, but it's that good)
10 - Remote God Seeker by PSYCHO-FRAME
Wish I vibed more with that Unprocessed album though, I think it's a cool album but I just never meshed well with that style of guitar playing. It's the same reason I could never get into Polyphia lmao.
My top albums of the year
1. Aviations - Luminaria

@@drtheengrumb4439 Nope. I thought it was their weakest album to date
TMBTE and Moments Elsewhere were my top 2 AOTY's as well. Saw JB once already and seeing them again in Feb opening for Silent Planet. Working on getting to Red Rocks to see ST in May. Hope to meet you at a show one day, Metalbirb!
The fact that you ranked Heavener at 3, and that’s one if, if not the lowest, rankings I’ve seen for that album, speaks dividends to just how accessible and still great that album is
heavener didnt make my top 10💀
Curious what you mean by accessible in that context?
watching the number one album and the first thing comes to me is : oh thanks god , I’m not the only old one who feel like a teenager flash back 🎉
For the eternal lovers of music in general and specially metal , this album will be classified as a classic one in the future, it will be cited as a reference for other artists in few years . I can’t wait the next albums, hope that the ascension of the band will bring us more beautiful songs ( they are young and definitely I care that surprises are coming 🤞)
Man I love watching these videos when birb starts explaining the band and I'm like "oh yeah, he's about to say jakub here"
5. 'Death Pill' by Death Pill

2. Currents - The Death We Seek
3. Polaris - Fatalism
TMBTE took this 56 yr old headbanger and shook me hard! I've not had a band make me feel this way about music in literal AGES.
Very rarely can I find a list like this that I agree with every selection. It seems impossible, but I do agree with your entire list and can’t make an argument. Sleep Token did what you said for me as well. They crafted a dream type of album that I would create if I had a choice. It has all the elements of unpredictability, playing and vocal prowess, ridiculous melodies and hooky songwriting, and not to mention, genre blending in the most seamless way possible. ❤

Great list! I got to listen to Mother again. I was a bit disappointed in it lol. Agreed completely on Sleep Token. My same pick (HEALTH’s new one was a very close second place for me). Definitely one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long while. 🤘😎
Mother took me two or three listens to fully get into it and I’m glad I stuck with it because it’s amazing
i'm including EPs bc i can lol
1. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite
2. Mental Cruelty - Zwielicht
3. Worm Shepherd - The Sleepless Sun
4. Night Crowned - Tales
5. Brand of Sacrifice - Between Death and Dreams
6. Extermination Dismemberment - Dehumanization Protocol
7. Sulphur Aeon - Seven Crowns And Seven Seals
8. PeelingFlesh - Slamaholics, Vol. 2
9. Psycho-Frame - Automatic Death Protocol
10. Suffocation - Hymns From The Apocrypha
i always have much different lists than others but i'm more of a deathcore and death metal person
My Top 10:
1. Lovebites - Judgement Day
2. Orbit Culture - Descent
3. Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden
4. Babymetal - The Other One
5. Invent Animate - Heavener
6. Silent Planet - Superbloom
7. Svalbard - The Weight of the mask
8. Humanity's Last Breath

I'm working on a top 25, here are some runners up: Currents - The Death Week, Periphery - Djent Is Not A Genre, Beartooth - The Surface, Veil of Maya - [m]other, TesseracT - War of Being, Sylosis - A Sign of Things to Come, Unprocessed - ...And Eveyrthing in Between, Termina - Soul Elegy, HEalth, Rat Wars, Metallica 72 Seasons, Unearth The Wretched; The Ruinous, and finally Myrkur - Spine.
As a forever fan of Sleep Token, I can only imagine THE EXPERIENCE of being someone who doesn’t know them watching this video and discovering them through your words about it.
However, one of my other top bands, Beartooth, did not make it onto the list, and I understand when compared to the other records, but The Surface is still my #2.
Take me back to Eden is the first album in I don't even know how long that has made me actually cry. The emotional connection that I have built to that album is insane. It is a masterpiece from start to finish. What's crazy to me is I'm the metal guy that doesn't listen to anything but metal. So there's so many of the r and b and hip hop elements that in Theory I should hate sleep token but I can't get enough of them
1. Seep Token - Take me back to Eden without a doubt...
2. Invent Animate - Heavener
3.Silent Planet - Superbloom
4.Currents - The Death We Seek
Good list Birb. Definitely some bands I need to take a closer look at
Definitely agree that TMBTE is the album of the year. To me it has the feel of a classic rock album. It has some heavy bits, it has the ballads and it has some experimentation in it. All just brought into the 21st century
LET'S GOOOOO!!! Thanks so much for the Aviations shout out and so high on the list sheesh 🫢 You said it multiple times but this year was insanely stacked so the fact that we got noticed by anyone this year, especially you my dude, is hugely inspirational. Congrats on all the success this year and heres to the insanity that 2024 will be🤘(also jesus that Johnny Booth record goes so hard)
I came to watch just to check Tesseract - War of Being landed on this list
Sleep Token number 1 is perfect. Nice to see Aviations featured. This helped me discover Jakub Zytecki - really great, is like Bon Iver meets Polyphia meets Sleep Token.
I would have added Hail the Sun - Divine Inner tension and Periphery - P5
Thanks for your hard work brother!
On of the best in the game.
Have a great New Years!!!!
Cheers 🍻 to an amazing 2024!!!!
As an almost 40-year-old loud music fan that had a privilege to listen to some amazing albums as they were released, I recognize when you have a true gem of an album. Back in my teenage years I've listened to Radiohead's Kid A and dismissed it largely because everyone was trying to be a contrarian and so I wanted to belong. Because of that, my stupid ass had to re-discover that absolute masterpiece of an album (and the band in general) years, decades later. Don't be like me, it's not worth it. The reason everyone is talking about Sleep Token's new album is it's a true piece of art and music that broadens the genre like nothing I've heard in a long time. Back in the days, we used to get albums like that every year almost. I hope that returns to rock in general.
Really surprised you didn't mention "Currents", nether here, not in top 50 songs. Pretty much agreed on everything else on a list.
I just learned about Johnny Booth this summer, hands down my favorite band right now….. I like Silent Planet and Invent Animate’s older stuff more than their releases this year. None of the other bands are my taste at all.
Opus by Nospūn was the album that surprised me the most this year, so fucking good. Also War of Being is my clear AOTY of 2023
First year end review / 2023 wrap up I’ve heard that’s mentioned either Veil of Maya and/or TesseracT. I’m knew to TesseracT but I’ve listened to all their stuff and I think this is their best album. Still getting used to Djent veil of maya lol
man was I waiting with baited breath on the 'moments elsewhere' call.... defo my album of the year.... everything they have put out is top tier.
1. Humanity's Last Breath - Ashen
2. Mental Cruelty - Zwielicht
3. The Arcane Order - Distortions From Cosmogony
4. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite
5. Within Temptation - Bleed Out
6. Viscera - Carcinogenesis
7. TesseracT - War of Being
8. Nexorum - Tongue of Thorns
9. Thy Art Is Murder - Godlike
10. Ov Sulfur - The Burden Ov Faith
Polaris - Fatalism is the best album of 2023.
tied with P5 imo❤
I’d safely say that the album take me back to Eden is the best musical set of scores ever written
It took me a while, but I'm FINALLY digging Sleep Token. Once you understand them, it is truly a fascinating band. And on top of it, there's the mystery around their identity with the masks and stuff. Reminds me of my younger days being a huge fan of Slipknot with their identity being secret and also named with numbers. I'd like to see them live one day, that's for sho !
Yeah Heavener is my definitive #1, and i am definitely biased being a metalcore addict XD
Funnily enough, TMBTE i actually think sits more around number 5 for me, i enjoyed it quite a bit, but there were so many albums that i found myself coming back to far more like Noble Art of Self Destruction, Fatalism and, more recently, ...And Everything in Between
I've seen Johnny Booth like 4 times this year and already have my tix to see them with Silent Planet and Thornhill next month. Awesome dudes, killer live, can't get enough JB.
As usual, whenever I create a "best of" annual year-end list I leave a bunch of good stuff off and 2023 was no exception at all. I probably could have made this list ten times longer and boring af to read, but that said, barring a complete miracle for 2023's last month, I have what would be the 25 albums that I enjoyed the most this year:
1. Lovebites -- Judgement Day
2. Delain -- Dark Waters
3. Hellripper -- Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags
4. Insomnium -- Anno 1696
5. Overkill -- Scorched
6. Redshift -- Laws of Entropy
7. Xandria -- The Wonders Still Awaiting
8. Perc3ption -- Art In Extreme Situations
9. Fierce Justice -- Fireborn
10. Acid King -- Beyond Vision
11. Enforced -- War Remains
12. Wytch Hazel -- IV: Sacrament
13. Restless Spirit -- Afterimage
14. Kalmah -- S/T
15. Ne Obliviscaris -- Exul
16. Echoes of Bronze -- Ilium
17. Night Legion -- Fight or Fall
18. Enchantya -- Cerberus
19. Majesties -- Vast Reaches Unclaimed
20. Midnight Vice -- S/T (the riffs on this are KILLER)
21. Excalion -- Once Upon A Time
22. Naitaka -- Emergence
23. Blood Ceremony -- The Old Ways Remain
24. Soen -- Memorial
25. Iron Savior -- Firestar
Just missed: Dhaliax -- Doomed , Obituary -- Dying of Everything, Blackbraid -- Blackbraid II, Cruachan -- The Living and the Dead, Enslaved -- Heimdal, Blackbriar -- A Dark Euphony, Moonlight Sorcery -- Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle, Akilla -- The Gods Have Spoken, Omnium Gatherum -- Slasher, Powerwolf-- Interludium, Orbit Culture -- Descent, Green Lung -- This Heathen Land, Twilight Force -- At the Heart of Wintervale, Crypta -- Shades of Sorrow, Strike -- Break the Chains, Frozen Crown -- Call of the North and Exmortus -- Necrophony.
Even with 25, I left off a LOT of good stuff.
Johnny Booth deserves the love for this 2023. Glad to see Nik Nocturnal and bogdanhxc mentioning them in their lists.
Surely Invent Animate deserves AOTY for me. Second place I would give to Sleep Token, third place - Silent Planet. To another year of good content, cheers!
The Invent Animate album is good but it's just a classic metal album that's been done many times before, and most songs sound the same. That's perfect if you love it, and that's obviously subjective, but it's hardly unique really.
The TMBTE album hasn't been done before, by anyone, not even Sleep Token, and it's a masterpeice that increased their fan base by 2000% which is insane. There's never been a clearer winner for AOTY
@@mplevey I disagree about both your points (about the Invent Animate album and about the Sleep Token album). I actually think only a few tracks out of TMBTE are unique. Some of them feel pretty ordinary and even weak, while there are no "bad" songs in Heavener. I also think Sleep Token themselves have made more "unique" and better albums in the past, so this is not even their best one. But as you said, it's all pretty subjective and I actually like both albums, that's why I have TMBTE on second place. So I don't think it's that "clear" about who the AOTY is. For example, on the Hardcore (Bogdan) awards it was voted that Heavener is AOTY (both by him and by the public) with thousands of votes. It's all opinions.
@valerymaznev2658 Fair enough, and yeah it's all art and subjective and that's the beauty of it all. Heavener just didn't grab me at all, and I've had a few play throughs. I like some songs but just don't think it's that good of an album. Nearly every song off TMBTE had me hooked on first listen, and I could listen to it front to back daily and not get sick of it. So much variety and fusion of styles rather than every song sounding the same with pounding double kicks with screams constantly which gets old quick for me. So yeah very subjective, but from what I've seen most people have TMBTE as AOTY. I guess it's what you prefer in terms of style etc
Sleep Token nor Johnny Booth even broke my top list. It goes
1 Invent Animate
2 Silent Planet
3 Jakub Zytecki
4 Termina
5 Holding Absence
6 Humanity's Last Breath
7 Polaris
8 Beartooth
9 Veil of Maya
10 Currents
Such a good year for music
Bummed Currents didn’t make your list but nonetheless a great top 10 list!
Ashen is undoubtably #1 for me, such a behemoth of an album. But I love Take Me Back to Eden as well!! Haven't solidified all my thoughts yet but it's most likely #2
1. SUPERBLOOM by Silent Planet
2. Heavener by Invent Animate
3. Moments Elsewhere by Johnny Booth
My top 6
1 sleep Token
2 termina
3 the word alive
4 Polaris
5 invent animate
6 silent planet
Glad to see heavener in your top 3
My top 10 favorite albums of this year are the two Psycho Frame EPs
I'm one of those people that can't stand sleep token, never have been able to get into them. But I will say heavener was one of my favorite albums this year.
Heavener for sure, Zwielicht by Mental Cruelty is a close second for me tho
I actually found myself listening to less metal this year and leaned more into pop/rnb/prog rock.
10 albums I liked in no order were Tesseract, Earthside, Silent Planet, Beartooth, Johnny Booth, END, Dying Wish, In Flames, Steven Wilson, August Burns Red.
I'm looking forward to next year for Ihsahn, The Pineapple Thief, Sum41 and maybe Kublai Khan will put out a full record.
Also, I fall into the camp who really does not like the Sleep Token album. For some reason it falls completely flat for me and was one of my worst albums of the year. Kind of weird how divisive it is in the community you either love it or really hate it.
🎉🎉🎉 solid solid Top 10 Birb! I can agree with the majority of it haha.
I have a recommendation for ya if you're up for checking out a Prog-metalcore-ish/post hardcore-ish band, and they recently just dropped an EP thats a whole vibe.
Check out: STILL STAYER
- 'Tunnel" . You just might end up really enjoying yourself and dig their sound. :)
Hooray. Try telling my obstinate metal friends how great TMBTE is. I've given up trying to convince anyone, honestly. It's a wonderful album.
@metalbird, have you linstened to Soen's last album? Check it out Soen - Memorial... for me it was the best prog metal album of 2023!
Regards from Brazil!!!!
Jakub’s album was on my list too. He’s incredible
Couldn't have agreed more with this list.
I find myself squarely in between the "love them or hate them" mantra of Sleep Token. I like a good amount of their music, but there is some stuff I'm not a fan of, or have personal, subjective, issues on. I think "Take Me Back To Eden" is a good album. I repeat: good. I quite enjoy it, and I listen to a handful of the songs regularly to this day. I get the hype, and I also get the hate for some of it. Again: I really like it, but I don't quite love it.
Also, Tesseract "War of Being" was the best music video, I thought, in 2023.
Appreciate and respect that. I myself love Sleep Token but understand it’s very subjective.
