  • How to fit a lewmar windlass for your anchor - SV Sea Cactus DIY #14
When we bought our Bavaria 30 cruiser we had no windlass fitted, or anchor locker shelf for that mater!
So our winter job to fit the lewmar horizontal we have been trying to do for what seems like ages and always gets put off for other jobs that kept getting pushed up the list.
but we have finally fitted it! looking at our boat i believe there used to be a windlass shelf in there but it has been cut out at some point in its life, anyway we was going to re-fibre glass one back in, but trying to build a shelf from plywood, coat in fibre glass, sand it all down, gel coat it, sounded like too much hard work when you can get someone to make a shelf up out of 316 stainless!
so there we have it, (the stainless steel cost about £50 in total) so if you can weld or know someone who can its quite affordable.
for those interested the windlass was a pre Christmas bargain of ebay for £89.65 complete with relay and isolator
Cables cost circa £30, few bolts and some heat shrink let say £10 - so somewhere around £180
now its time for a new anchor hopefully!
catch up with us in a few weeks for our first decent sail out this season sailing the UK waters!

Looks like we could do the same on a Bavaria 31.

I'd imagine so the hull is the same isn't it?

Hi. Great job. Do you have the dimensions/
    Measurements for the stainless plate?

Cactus Sailing: hey. I am asking because I have a Bavaria 30c like yours and I have been considering different solutions and yours seems to be perfect 🧐😉👍

Søren Hut : I suggest a much stronger (thicker) plate and several more bolts to hold it down. I would not trust the one in the video unless you only use the boat in good weather. Regards, Silvano

@@silvanocometta9760 its only ever to pick the anchor up with, when anchored the load is all on the cleats via a bridle and snubber, there's also some hefty box section under the plate you can't quite see on the video, and there are also more bolts since i did the video (i didn't have long enough ones while filming) it certainly isn't going anywhere that's for sure!
