    Just a small comment about galvanic corrosion. It's not a matter of a "softness" of a metal, but rather the electrochemical difference in potential between two metals. Zinc is commonly used as sacrificial metal because it is more "active" than the steel of the shaft or the bronze of the prop. In fact the only metal higher in the galvanic series is magnesium. Softness isn't really a factor. Lead is very soft, but is actually less reactive than stainless steel. Gold extremely soft, but is just about the _least_ reactive metal there is. Iron can be used to protect copper, even though copper is far softer. Just a little chemistry nerding. Great video as always.

    It s good to see you have read the windlass manual and are using a cleat to tie off the anchor rode after anchoring - not leaving the winch sorely to take any load - most people dont bother doing this

    • @lifeislikesailing
      @lifeislikesailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes, I couldn't imagine not tying it up to the cleat!

    The windlass walkthrough was great in my view. My boat is similar in size and layout like your, and have been looking at horizontal wndlasses. One thing I'll pick up from your installation is the switch near the quarter berth. I have a near identical spot like your boat. I also do have two prop shaft zincs, but do not change them at the same time, though my boat is in warmer waters.

    Was noticing under the aluminum where the windless is all the water droplets, You should spray foam on it or your windless will rust really fast! When putting on the zinc's you should sand the shaft with a fine sand paper it should be really clean! also you noticed your old one was turning it wouldn't have been working, when you put them on you hit them on each side after tightening. then tighten them again. You will notice there's a small brass nipple inside the zinc when you hit it that smashes it against the shaft to make contact. I just did my boat also, I'm getting ready to leave around the 15 going to Queen Charlottes.

      You read my mind Vern and already looking at insulating under the new anchor base to stop the condensation. :) Thanks for the tip on the zincs and I tried to get them on the cleanest part, but ya I should have cleaned the shaft first them mounted them. Safe travels to QCI. :)

    Perfect timing for my ground tackle change. Your setup is what I've decided to do to my tartan 34. up my main anchor to a Mantus 45 lb with 100 ft of chain 5/16" with 5/8" rode. And the lewmar vertical L1. Hope it operates as well as yours. I do have room for an additional battery up close to the windless to eliminate that expensive 10. Dollars a foot. Wire . Thanks for helping me take the plunge. That lifting anchors stuff is a young mans game. Great stuff. Any more recommendations would appreciate your input.

    I really like the operation of the new windlass Alfa. Not only does it look like a really neat installation but as well the horizontal operation giving 180 rather than 90 degrees bite makes good sense. I was going to ask how much the total installation cost you but I checked online and the costs for the components are all there. It looks pretty reasonable. That you can use it as a solo sailor makes great sense.
    It sure was a perfect time to haul out with the zincs needing changing
    You sure do live in a great cruising area. 😀. Happy sailing

    Just came across your vlog. First off, sexy C and C. My favorite. I have a 37. If u are leaving your boat in the dinghy, and u look back at the boat, and it doesn't give you a hard-on, you have the wrong boat. Every time , with a C and C. I don't know if you are in fresh or salt water, so just a comment, if salt, the better option would be aluminum, rather than zinc. Also, you should have sanded the shaft lightly. The 2nd zinc should go back aft, about 1/4 inch ahead of the strut. That way, should the shaft loosen, it won't fall out, and it won't bang around. I am also curious about the shiny areas on the shaft, just ahead and behind the strut. What's that all about? Fair winds

  • @Josef_R
    @Josef_R 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even if you go with a battery in the front, then you are still going to need heavy gauge wire to charge the battery. And that may involve wiring to another area of the boat, so in the end, what you did is most likely the best option.

    • @lifeislikesailing
      @lifeislikesailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the idea with a battery up front is that the cables would not have to be as large so you could cut down on cost, but then you have the additional cost of another battery. Thanks, I'm glad I went with the the way I played it out. :)

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the cables would need to be large for charging. Unless you install a dedicated charger near it.

    Really nice installation of your Maxwell windlass. Timely for me as I'm about to install an HRCFF8 (horizontal). I have just enough room under the vee-berth, so installing an AGM there. So nice to see a C&C in such beautiful shape. I have a 37 of the same vintage/design, so it's useful to see how you approach projects. That lip on the headliner is handy for wires--how do you secure them there?

    Hi. I’m in the process of building a windless/ chain locker much the same as you had built because yours looks like it’s very functional. Do you remember if you had it made out of stainless steel of aluminum?

    • @lifeislikesailing
      @lifeislikesailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had this made with aluminum to keep the weight down as much as I could. The windlass, the extra chain and larger anchor added more weight, so going aluminum for the base helped for sure.
