Man, you're making me appreciate the Honda Shadow 1100 I once owned. That thing was absolutely bulletproof! With regards to minor leaks and scratches...yeah, you gotta let it all go. I'm actually happy when I buy a car and it gets its first dent. Because then it's imperfect, and I no longer have to worry about it! :D
14:15 moment - Actually it's because of your videos on the Honda Rebel 1100 that I still want to get one. But I want to get a 2023 model DCT to hopefully by pass the problems you've dealt with. Your vids are always visually stunning to watch you ride around so thank you and I appreciate the mechanical info you share!
Glad to see your 1100 is back on the road, I'm 66 and just bought a 1100T DCT and loving it dealing with arthritis it's great to be back on the road, couldn't use my clutch anymore happy rides!
Finding a good, honest shop is ridiculously tough. I don't use 'em very often because I do a lot myself, but it seems that so many places just don't give a s--t how they treat customer's bikes. If they want repeat customers, you'd think they'd "care" a little more... Glad the problem with the second shop wasn't too big a deal! And, yeah, I always think the bike feels different or is making weird noises after I do something major to it. Just comes with the OCD territory... usually. 😅
That's a very mature self-observation with regards to thrashing on bikes. These things happen, you can't work on bikes and they just stay pristine, the only way to keep them in immaculate condition is to not ride them at all and just store them and who in their right mind wants to do that.
I just got a ‘22 1100 with 1900 miles on it. It’s my first bike and I’m totally in love. I took it out of rain mode after 3 days, and I feel so comfortable and confident with it. Have loved watching all your content and it really helped me get familiar with the rebel. I’m the kinda guy who loves knowing as much as I can about my stuff. Glad to see you’re back in the saddle with it!
Hey Burch, It was mainly your channel along with a couple others that helped me decide on the Rebel 1100 (manual) & I absolutely love it. Almost impossible to find places that'll handle our stuff like it their own. Over the years I would stress to employees that they better treat customer repairs BETTER than their own. That's a hard thing to find especially these days. Anyway i enjoy your channel and i spread the word whenever i can.
When an engine has excess it released into air cleaner. My latest bikes have had a drain tube off air box to collect escess and a way to drain. Some of that ecess oil is pulled into air cleaner., Might want to check. Love your acceptance of "things happen" , sure brings peace. Good video
Yup I definitely plan on checking that! The breather tube had a bit of oil in it, but nothing too too crazy. Checking the air box is probably a good idea still though 👌🏻
I’ve been watching and rewatching your videos for like the last month everyday. Its been very entertaining watching the new videos and your old videos, been on a binge watching the Honda rebel videos. Love the content man!
I limit myself to bikes and cars that I can work on myself. I would be livid if even half of this happened to my stuff. Glad you were able to catch this problem.
hey man I found your channel recently after doing a lot of research and getting a rebel 500 for my first bike. so far I'm still building confidence to go out onto busy streets but I appreciate all your content on the bike and everything I've learned from watching ! thanks for making videos on rebels lol. also you and nina are super cute together :))
When I put on the bracket for the OEM bags, the wrench slipped and I chipped a little bit of the frame. I went to a car store and got a black automotive fixer and sealed it right up. 12.5k miles in 13 months ;)
Hey Burch, I'm glad your bike is fixed and you handled the paint issues well. However, I would call the 2nd shop and let them know about the overfill of the oil so they don't make that mistake again. Prayers Flying for safe travels
Hey! After your video about the leak I got my bike to honda and they found a leak and fixed it. I haven't noticed till your video, thank you! I also extended the warranty just in case. I still have the wobble issue thou. I can send a video if you want.
I have a 2022 rebel 1100. I’ve ridden 12000 miles so far. Rode from Oakland to Nashville (moved) No issues what so ever still for this bike. I had to replace the tires that’s it.
You have been a source of info about the rebel for myself and my fiance. We are seriously considering getting our motorcycle endorsements and the rebel 500 looks like it'll be both our choice. I understand the 1100 is better with features, but with neither of us having any experience at all... I don't want to have to use the rain mode or anything like that (yes I've watched a few of your videos). Hope to hear your input on us both considering the 500, have fun and stay safe!
I think you are right to be a little peeved about the paint chip, but you are handing it accordingly. Ultimately, these bikes may be expensive, but at the end of the day they are just material goods. Shit happens, life goes on. I think the big takeaway is that these shops/dealerships are only as good as the individuals who work at them, and some mechanic making $23/hr isn't going to care about your bike as much as you do... Anyhow, great video as always and I'm glad the 1100 is going to be a mainstay in the videos once again!
To me, since the shop is 90 miles away, that's like three hours on the road, and a couple more hours waiting for the shop, and a tank of gas, and fixing it yourself is like ten minutes, and since it's under the cover it doesn't matter if it's not perfect.
@@peterwilson8039 agreed! It sounds like the shop is just going to ship me the touch up paint and everything so I can get it fixed myself. Muuuch easier that way 🙌🏻
Rebel 1100 is still on my Wishlist, only thing is I will probably keep an extra attention for the leaks, it's great to know what has a potential of happening beforehand... This way or another I am planning to get it in... let's say 2 years, so there is a possibility they'll fix it till then. Overall I see the Rebel 1100 as a great bike they made, and honestly the only thing I would probably prefer to have there "on top" would be to have it shaft instead of chain driven. Ps - Great to see you may have finally fixed the leak! :D
Yea definitely don’t let this deter you from getting one! It’s still my favorite bike I’ve EVER ridden!! Just keep an eye on the known issues, and have a blast! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hell to the no!! 🤟 Everything is fixable in the end, good for you to stay positive. When the time'll come you'll just sell it and get a new one anyway. Some stuff I'd go directly to Honda for sure. Peace!
Man, I'm sorry you had to go through all of that! Nothing against maintenance shops, but after turning wrenches on aircraft for 20+ years, and being burned by other people's work on more than one occasion, I've made it a point to do a pretty decent visual inspection of everything in, on, and around what was worked on, along with any fluid levels they invoiced for. Like you said, people make mistakes, but those are expensive mistakes.
I'd say call the shop and just ask if they can get that fixed. Definitely wasn't there before hand and clearly caused by them because they were working in that exact area. Not a big deal and relatively easy fix. Also, having a shop fix that grommet leak was the best thing anyway because it documents it and hopefully Honda actually recalls it like they should.
From the sounds of it they’re going to send me all the necessary touch up paint so I can fix it myself. I’d rather that then to ride another 4 hour round trip to have a shop (that already damaged my bike in the first place) do the work for me. And agreed- even with all the BS I’m glad that I did everything “properly” so that it’s documented.
Man I am at one point glad my bike hasnt been doing this stuff and at the same time sad you had to spend the first couple of months of the riding reason dealing with this crap. Glad its all squared away.
Thanks dude! I’m definitely sooo happy to finally have it squared away!! Luckily I have all the other bikes that I’ve been riding, but it’s been hell without the Rebel 😭
I had messaged you about my cb300 having that oil issue with the weephole....I think I maybe have damaged the oil seal from overfilling on oil (not sure if that was really the reason). After I did the repair, I still had a little oil coming from the weep after. Take some paper towel and roll it up and shove it into the weep. It should soak up all the oil if it is done leaking
Hi. I just got 23 1100DCT. But Unfortunately I also have problems with engine oil leaks. But the place where the leak is different from yours, mine is the oil leak in the middle of the engine. I sent it back to the dealer once, but they checked and found no leaks. Now that I've found where the leak came from, I may have to send it back to the dealer again.
Heck yeah man. Now we need to meet up in West Virginia to go on some adventures. Glad to see your rebel is back. Happy to see it was somewhat an easy fix. Hope you are doing well my friend
Long story...Dealer scratched my frame. Said they couldn't repair it. I cleaned the area with isopropyl alcohol and touched it up with my daughters black fingernail polish. Still looks good after two years
Burch I just bought a new CMX1100T. Love it but I can't figure how use the digital set modes including cruise, torque, mpg... everything. Also backlighting is dark!
Seems like a nice bike. I wont buy cars anymore that are newly designed for that year because I have had issues and i could see that happening with motorcycles too.
I had a similar issue with a leaky stator grommet on my old 650 Vstar. I fixed it myself with Mr. Gasket oil resistant sealant from the auto parts store.
I don’t know for sure but I think there is some oxidation on that weld on the frame. The shop may have touched it and knocked off the paint but it could well be that they didn’t cause the initial paint damage which made it flake.
I love my rebel 1100 DCT. I was injured in an accident in my left hand doesn't work well enough to use a clutch. What I suspect is happening with your rebel is that the mating surfaces are warping when it reaches a certain temperature. This is why the gasket and all your other replacements are not holding up.
I get how you want to get it fix from factory since it's so new, but some times it's best to bite the bullet and work on your own bike. Very little people will treat your bike like its theirs. Glad to see you are getting it handled.
Ive had my rebel 300 since February brand new and now have a recall about a pressed in plug falling out and oil leaking out so i feel your pain.. patiently waiting for the crankcase cover to come in and be replaced at dealer 😅
Thanks for your frankness and the Rebel 1100 DCT is still on my radar regardless of your current trials and tribulations. Wishing you all the best for a reliable ride and no more mechanical snafus!
Hopefully that oil leak behaves. There are 2 gaskets in there i think. 1 for oil and 1 for coolant. Seems like that will need to be replaced. My crf, did the same thing but with coolant. Had it replaced 3 times cause the shop kept messing up the repair… I also was at a dealership that had 2 crf300ls and one had coolant on the weep hole and the other had oil. I don’t think it will ever go away 100% due to the design. The only jobs I’d take it to a dealer for are a tire replacement and a valve clearance. Also my crf300ls paint was sub par.
Honda has made so many great bikes over the years. My Kawasaki is old and leaks a few drops every now and again and my 22 year old Sportster never leaks a drop. Honda should have taken that bike and sealed it for free and then apologized to you but my point is that life is short and riding is what matters. You are a smart guy and you know that those leaks are not detrimental so spend your time feeling the wind and only worry about this stuff when it’s raining or cold. Thank you for the videos.
I dont think the paint is an issue from the shop. It may have shown itself after repair/washing but It is along a weld and they are not using big tools to remove small bolts. I am thinking more likely from flex of the frame. Ever had the front wheel off the ground?
That's another thing you pointed out that I think people need to understand. New model, first year. This is "unproven" technology and frankly, more new technology ends up crap than ends up being bulletproof, this is why we still talk about the bulletproof bikes and cars from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, because having a vehicle that meets that standard of excellence is actually a bit of a rare thing. However, a company doesn't get to that point of new tech being bulletproof if they don't first take the risks of making the new tech and putting it out there to be driven by many over long periods of time. Frankly, if "not enough" honda bond is the major issue here and that's it, then that's not much of a big deal and in fact that's a one-time fix as far as I can tell. Not bad at all for first year of a new model.
As was said. Weld points that the paint pops off from show stress at that weld. Wheelies? Driving of curbs? Potholes? Water pump weep holes on Hondas.🙄 The can leak oil, coolant, or both. I had an ST1300. Got a water pump under warranty, was leaking oil. Later model years they put a "drain" tube on the weep hole and changed the "phraseology" in the service manual from dripping to leaking. With a tube going to the ground how are you going to know it's leaking while riding? I went back in time, my current ride is a 92 750 Nighthawk. No coolant, no valve adjustment, no ride modes, no FI, simple.
I'm a little different from most people but if it were me I would just chip any of the loose paint off and sand the area a little and wash the area with rubbing alcohol to get rid of any oil and then use a small brush to brush on a little gloss black paint. No one ever notices that stuff.
They’re Vans grips designed after the waffle sole of Vans shoes! Super comfy. I used to run them on my BMX bikes so when they came out with motorcycle grips it was a no brainer 🤘🏻
I will say I understand the wanting a professional to take care of your most expensive bike. But I decided to look at my new moto guzzi that I should do all my work on it because then I know it will be cared for perfectly. So I did my first service which included my valve checks (which was super scary for the first time) but now I know it’s done right and if I do damage it then it’s my fault. And I also saved like 700 dollars 😂
Ayy that’s the way to do it!! Solid outlook on things dude. Valve checks are so intimidating the first time you do it and then you go…wait, that was it? I still haven’t done one on a bike yet, but even on my old 2001 Honda CRV I felt the same way 😂
I decided to go that route with my XR150 in the Philippines. I wanted to do upgrades that potentially voided my warranty along with wanting to use a different oil than the thin Honda oil. It's such a hassle to get to the dealer and with such a simple bike, I just went for it. I swapped the carb and I'm glad I did, wired the lights for DC so now I have LEDs. I can change my own oil and set my own tappets. When I picked up the bike, I was more familiar with the cold hard starting issue than they were. He started draining the carb like there was a problem. I don't want my bike to be shop class for a rookie mechanic. If it was a complex machine like the ADV160 FI, liquid cooled scooter, then sure, I'm at the mercy of the dealer.
The 1100 is back 🥰. God I missed seeing that bike; she's gorgeous. Got a 500 a few weeks back as my first bike since there weren't any 1000 Manuals in the area for sale for over 9 months. Don't know if it's worth investing $ in upgrading it so I can enjoy it since it looks like I'll be keeping it for a while longer as supply of the 1100s is still low. What do you think Burchinator?
The Rebel 1100 is in a totally different league than the 500 honestly! I loooved my 500, but then I got my 1100 and went…OH…so THAT’S what I’ve been missing out on 😳😂 If you have the opportunity to upgrade you definitely won’t be disappointed, but with that said, the 500 is still such a rad bike!
Ive read the comments. You need to consider that with anything. Extended warranty pays for itself with the first repair. New of anything you have its flaws and quirks that need to be worked out. My brand new 2022 Honda Navi is under the speedometer cable recall. Not a huge deal but prooves once again nothing is perfect the first year of a new bike. Especially more so under the first 100 units of production.
So when motors have too much oil it sometimes gets the air filter a little oily and that might make it run less than perfect. So if I were you I would check the air filter to make sure every part of it is still dry and not oily.
hello there a dct 1100 2023 with 386 klm on it I really dont no if I should by these bike it a dealer got that for sale somebody could tell me wath I got to check on it before I by that bike thk
Life of Burch I love your videos. Hindsight is 20/20 sounds like you shoulda done this job yourself. It woulda made for good content and I’ve seen your other videos before. I believe you could have done the job yourself.
Once the seal is blown from overfilling it will leak. I do not let dealers work on my stuff (if I can do it) - most of the time they damage something or do something wrong. I think this model is not great. I have 1982 shadow and it does not leak.
A Honda leaking oil? Honda must have contracted with HD for engine parts. I've owned 14 HD spanning 55 years. All leaked at some point. Recently purchased an '03 VTX 1800C with 27,000 miles. Thought about loosening some engine bolts to make me feel normal.
I was so close to buying 1 of these. I want a auto bike after being on this navi for 9 months. And there is only 2 options. This or the 750N or something like that. Both Hondas and probably got same issues. Oh well saved 12k or 9k depending on which one I would of choose.
I dont trust shops working on my bikes cars or anything. I trust certain individuals, who I know got experience or myself because I know exactly what I did or did not do when working on it. Shops will rip you off and take advantage of. Sounds like the rebel 1100 got some issues too, which sucks. There's gonna get chips on it though from rising driving, gravel flies up and all kinds of stuff when riding, I know the frame thing wasnt.from gravel but the exhaust pipe looks like it could've been, it don't look too bad. Should be able to touch it up easily. Keep rolling out the videos, enjoy watching your alls videos. What bike would you consider getting or trading the rebel 1100 in for? Let's say if you went that route.
That cracked paint area is a factory defect. The paint should adhere to the frame and be thick enough to not crack. That shop should fix the issue. I wouldn't keep that bike if it was overfilled because there are seals that could be damaged by over-filling.
There so lucky you didn't blow any seals man. Too much oil is worse than not enough. I've had very bad experiences with dealerships as well. It's crazy that labor rates are high but quality is so low.
I have the same problem. I'm not willing to take it to a shop. I've taken my bike to 2 different shops and both times, they @#$#$ my bike up with scratches on my exhaust and even my wheels like WTF man.
You can mention the shops name. It’s not illegal and they will have a very hard time trying to do anything about it. Unless you signed an NDA, then you can say what you want about your experience. It’s no different than a google review. Don’t let them scare you. Call their bluff.
Nooo no no ride an 1100 and then tell me if you still feel that way 😂 The 500 is a rad little bike, but the 1100 is in a league of its own! Someone just emailed me about an 1100 that they’ve already put 55k miles on too 🤯
I personally think the service industry is trending down. Hard to find good technicians who care. The service writers have to spend more time with customers because of poor service. Honda bond seems the way to go if you do a cost benefit analysis. Thanks for the video. I have a 2023 Rebel 500.
just use some automotive touch up paint and clear from the little bottles at the parts stores thats probably a factory defect that came out when they power washed it
Glad it finally got fixed and done and the idiocy of the other, blood-sucking, mad-pay-gouging, first repair shop is outta the picture (forever, hopefully). Glad to see the Rebel back home with the rebel Daddy. My first bike was a Honda 400 and I rode that sucker into the ground; it looked ugly by the time I was done with it: paint scratches, rust, way too many imperfections to list but it rode good for what I needed. After that, the bikes I'd get I'd take better care of and make sure everything was copacetic. So when I bought my current bike brand new, I'd baby that thing like it was going out of style. Then my first scratch became a second one and a third, etc. and you do what you can to maintain, even though life is gonna throw everything at you to make sure your efforts are gonna take some hits. In the end, don't sweat it. Repair the big stuff, forgo the little things unless they have potential to become bigger and ride the wind like an eagle on two wheels for all its worth. And eat tacos. Keep the vids goin, Burch-dude!
Hey Burch doubt you’re gonna probably see this but I am the guy who owns the Honda rebel 500 SE whos commented before I just wanted to say that I am noticing a lot more frame damages in places where I think it wouldn’t be so it could be entirely possible. It was either the shop or it could’ve just been like that, and never have noticed it for example, near the area where the chain guard is where the screws there was a bunch of scratches around there, as well as just in general very tight parts, so that could totally be the case as for your bike leak. How many miles do you have again on the sucker. It leaks worse than my 2010 bmw 😂
Definitely a bit of a mixture, but hard to say since it would’ve theoretically been 4qts fresh mixed with 1qt that only had under 5k miles on it. I’ll probably drain it all and replace with fresh oil to be safe though. Already ordered a bunch of oil that should be here Monday or Tuesday 👌🏻
@@LifeOfBurch I mean this sincerely, how can you like Hondas knowing that it is "normal" for your bike to leak oil? I would be livid and get rid of it immediately.

And agreed- even with all the BS I’m glad that I did everything “properly” so that it’s documented.
14:20 The VIN number does not indicate the specific order to which it was produced on the assembly line.
Yea this is the only thing I haven’t handled personally on my bike. Lesson learned.
And I was getting ready to buy a 2023 Rebel 1100. What would be another option that's comparable?
if you are cool with paying more... Harley Davidson Nightster Special.
Great video Burch !!! 🤙🏽
Very well said Mike! Thanks for the support! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
How can we contact Honda to try ti see if they might send the grommet free of coat as well?
I picked up a '23 Rebel 500 SE a few weeks ago. The paint on these is very thin...
Burch where did you get your bike stand.
Curious on the brand of wheel chock?
I just learned that. That is completely unacceptable. I was looking at a Rebel 1100. Knowing that, I will not consider one no matter the price.
I'm a little different from most people but if it were me I would just chip any of the loose paint off and sand the area a little and wash the area with rubbing alcohol to get rid of any oil and then use a small brush to brush on a little gloss black paint. No one ever notices that stuff.
Rebel 1100 is on my short list for my next bike maybe next season…just wish I could find a dealer in MD with them in stock.
I know this is off topic for the video but I really like the look of those grips. What are they called?
@@LifeOfBurch thanks!
@@telcobilly what all changes did you get out of swapping the carb? Did you notice a difference in performance or just better starts?
Love that windshield/front fairing. Which one is that? Is that a Memphis shades?
Yep, Memphis Shades Gauntlet! I love it!😎🤘🏻
Ive read the comments.
Extended warranty would’ve been more expensive than this repair, but I get your point. Both of our Navis came up on the speedo cable recall too 😅
Would you recommend the 1100 for a brand new rider? I’m taking the msf course in august and plan to purchase my first bike after that.
Hopefully that issue is resolved forever. 👍
So when motors have too much oil it sometimes gets the air filter a little oily and that might make it run less than perfect. So if I were you I would check the air filter to make sure every part of it is still dry and not oily.
you have 100% convinced me to NOT buy a Honda Rebel 1100. I am very happy that I purchased a Suzuki GSX-S1000 GT and not a Honda anything.
Dude, I live in Pasadena and will be getting a 2022 Rebel 1100 later this year. It’d be really cool to link up and ride together sometime.
Here in California we had wildfires and smoke conditions that lasted 8 weeks in 2020.
hello there a dct 1100 2023 with 386 klm on it I really dont no if I should by these bike it a dealer got that for sale somebody could tell me wath I got to check on it before I by that bike thk
What ever happened to the Oil leak? What was the solution ?
Don't forget to check the crank case breather tube after having too much oil in it
I was so close to buying 1 of these.
The oil saga continues.
😭😭😭
My mans said "SUCCINCTLY." We getting content AND education!
Ayyy ya boi EDUCATED!! 😂😂😂
please don’t stop the XR content...
Got more XR stuff coming this week if the weather cooperates! 😎🤘🏻
We have the haze from the Canada fires in Virginia as well
I have the same problem.
I’m about to buy an 1100 , is that a common issue? Does it happen to the 2023 models?
my 300 rebel 2023 has a crank case recall because of those weep plugs
I almost feel like getting 500 instead of the 1100 was the better choice???
Nooo no no ride an 1100 and then tell me if you still feel that way 😂 The 500 is a rad little bike, but the 1100 is in a league of its own! Someone just emailed me about an 1100 that they’ve already put 55k miles on too 🤯
Dude if you look at the chip you can see rust on the weld water may have under the the paint it only takes a pin hole
I haven't had any problems with my 1990 vmax besides my exhaust ditching me lol.
Hello! Can someone tell me the gloves he is wearing? 😊 thanks!
This is why I do my own work.
is this the first model year of the 1100? Honda is usually not this problematic
I personally think the service industry is trending down. Hard to find good technicians who care. The service writers have to spend more time with customers because of poor service. Honda bond seems the way to go if you do a cost benefit analysis. Thanks for the video. I have a 2023 Rebel 500.
just use some automotive touch up paint and clear from the little bottles at the parts stores
thats probably a factory defect that came out when they power washed it
Usually there is always something that happens on a new model. That’s a given. Etleast it wasn’t really bad like a lot of new models
Agreed! In the grand scheme of things, if an oil leak is the biggest issue with a new model then we’re not doing too bad lol
Hey Burch doubt you’re gonna probably see this but I am the guy who owns the Honda rebel 500 SE whos commented before
I just wanted to say that I am noticing a lot more frame damages in places where I think it wouldn’t be so it could be entirely possible.
Harley twin cams have the same issue from the primary
Can you replace the handlebar with the 500 rebel handlebar?
No. Rebel 500 is 1” the whole way, Rebel 1100 is 1” at the clamps and 7/8” at the controls/grips.
@@LifeOfBurch Thank you LOB!
@@LasernaE87 happy to help! 🙌🏻
Isn’t this a crack of the frame? 6:12
Hey Mike, does that oil look clean and new or a little bit dirty like it's a mixture?
Definitely a bit of a mixture, but hard to say since it would’ve theoretically been 4qts fresh mixed with 1qt that only had under 5k miles on it. I’ll probably drain it all and replace with fresh oil to be safe though. Already ordered a bunch of oil that should be here Monday or Tuesday 👌🏻
@@LifeOfBurch I mean this sincerely, how can you like Hondas knowing that it is "normal" for your bike to leak oil? I would be livid and get rid of it immediately.
