  • Ah yes...the Rebel 1100 oil leak saga continues. I wish I could say it's fixed after the 13 days it just spent in the shop, but it's not. The video should explain everything.
    As much as this situation sucks, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to ‪@hondamotorcycles‬ for making the call to "good will" my stator. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for getting this issue resolved for not only myself, but all current and future Rebel 1100 owners as well. This bike is still my favorite bike I've ever owned and I just want to help all of us Rebel 1100 owners have miles of trouble-free ownership!
    As for Pete's Cycle...I don't see myself going back there ever again after this BS, but you guys can make your own judgement call based off the situation. Just sucks because it's where I bought my bike and I've never had an issue there until now.

They're well aware of the problem, and this issue is 100% covered in the general engine warranty for the motorcycle because we've literally done them a few times already on different bikes at my shop. And Burch not being made aware of these by the cycle shop he took this to just shows that the shop, or at least the CSA that handled his intake forms and maintenance request was at best, dishonest about the issue.

Back in the day (when I was a kid!), I purchased a new 1975 Honda 750 K5. Put over 100k trouble-free miles on it; went cross country in 1979, and toured up and down the east coast and locally quite frequently. Also commuted to work and college. Yo Burch, master tech of 15 years here. That oil leak is warrantied through Honda because it's a common issue from the factory. It should have ONLY costed you the amount of the oil change. I've done a few of them at my shop. The reason why they are trying to charge you for this, is because shops make very little (if any) money on warranty jobs.

    • @onecookieboy
      @onecookieboy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We used to actually lose money on warrantee work, simply because the labour rate was lower and it stopped you from doing work at the full rate, also warrantee work is notoriously hard to do in the amount of time they allow.

    • @DaroffApFire
      @DaroffApFire ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@onecookieboy Yep I've had the same issue from time to time. But I don't do my work simply to make money. If i was concerned with making loads of money there are many other things I could be doing other than running a shop and being a tech myself. I do it because I enjoy it, and it helps those who need it. And that's enough for me.
      That said, this job about the oil leaks on these bikes isn't labor intensive and can be done in about an hour. So even if the cycle shop Burch went to wasn't doing it under warranty (which is already a huge red flag about their business practices), then their goal is to simply rip people off by lying to them. And that honestly pisses me off as someone in the trade.

I would expect, even if I bought a NEW HD, that outside of the warranty period, I am liable for any problems or repairs it might need. Good job not giving in to that shop. That is 100% some scam stuff. Unless there is evidence of communication between that shop and Honda regarding the good will of the part, I would not be quick to believe it. They easily could have found a cheap or used replacement part and were ready to be duplicitous because the entire conversation you recorded sounds duplicitous. Hopefully Honda does a recall, however, rather than just do a public campaign on your prospective channels, have you guys talked about doing a call in, where you get people together with this problem and you all call into Honda all in the same day. Essentially run a call in lobby with people affected by this. That generally is going to get some big corporate attention.

      I'm not sure that's entirely what's happening here, i can buy that Honda have changed the guidance and actually do want the stator change this time (rather than it being the dealer going rogue), but if the partzilla price for a stator is 280 or so, and the dealer price is 420, Honda going over the dealer's head and offering a free stator to the customer means the dealer misses out on their roughly $150 markup just on the part.
      Amazingly, just after that, the dealer helpfully remembers they were apparently supposed to whack on £150 for an oil change. i wouldn't even call it sketchy, it's outright slimy AF

    I did the stator sealant job on my CB1100. Very easy job. Just do the job yourself cut out the dealer, forget the warranty… The dealer would probably do it wrong anyway… On the bleed valve; on my CRF there are two grommets inside one for oil and one for coolant. I had coolant leak out and had it replaced. Still leaked a little tho. Never had oil out of it. Out of curiosity I visited a dealer and saw 2 new CRF 300 bikes one leaking coolant and one leaking oil.

They want way too much money and there's enough info on forums to handle most every issue. Did a carb rebuild, stator replacement, valve adjustment, rear end replacement (shaft driven Vulcan), speedo sprocket, brakes and oil changes. Over the years I probably saved thousands in dealer markups/labor hours and really learned to understand my machine. It'll be a process, there's going to be some blood, sweat, tears and some cussing, but I'd start doing work on your bike myself and make videos on it.

    This is the same thing I'm going through right now with the Honda dealer ship here in Jacksonville NC. I bought a new 2023 Honda Grom from them last June that only has 700 miles on it. The ABS light keeps coming on and staying on, and the rear wheel bearing and dust seal blew out a few weeks a go. I took my bike to them for repairs, which they stated would be covered under the factory warranty. I get a call a few days later telling me they need to do a diagnostic on it before they can fix it. They know what's wrong already, so I ask them why they couldn't just fix it. I was told that the technician would need the diagnostic before he would do any work. I think it's there way of saying we want your 150.00 out of pocket first. Then I was told it my be June before I get my bike back because of the back log. I'm thinking of calling Honda corp myself to see what the problem is. Stay strong and ride safe brother.

      As a car tech. Diagnostics is a pert of it. You brought it to a shop where experienced people are going to fix it. If you don’t want to pay to have it fixed. You just fix it yourself. But I’m not fixing something cuz you say so I want to diagnose and see what the issue is and what caused it. Then you get a warranty. If I just do what you say then there’s no warranty. And most times the customer is wrong.

    I got a Honda CB650r, 2020, and there’s so many cases of oil leak from the water pump and there is no recall yet. I feel like it’s the same situation here, a lot of cases but no acknowledgement of it being a problem. The only fix so far for me was replacing the water pump as a whole which I was fortunate enough to be able to do the job myself.

    Bugs me so much that dealerships do this. Lucky enough they didnt fight me on the recall for the navi as well as the petcock being swapped as the stock one couldnt turn it with out both hands. Currently dealing with similar issues with my truck and Nissan as they "cant replicate" the problems but keep getting reoccurring issues. Even under warranty have to pay just to have it looked at. Its frustrating and dirty business. By the way i would like to thank you as a side note for the content convincing me to get a Rebel 500 as well as quazimotard. Great bike and im loving every bit of it just want to throw some crash guards on it now.

    I could be wrong but I thought there had to be hundreds or thousands of people experiencing an issue before a manufacturer issued a recall. I think in this case they're just chalking it up as a lemon. Hopefully your video gets enough folks to submit claims to Honda in order for them to see it's worth issuing a recall. Good luck, man.

    This is precisely why I prefer old bikes - simple design and simple maintenance and repairs you can usually do yourself. Modern bikes are complicated, require specialist equipment and training to maintain and repair and usually involve replacing entire components rather than repair / modify the particular issues. Whenever I see a bike on the back of a Tow Truck, seemingly it’s always a “new” bike.

  • @BryantintheMidfield
    @BryantintheMidfield ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a common issue on Triumphs as well. They also replace the entire stator most times for no reason. Most people put some RTV on there and call it a day lol. Its been an issue for years too, wild they wont fix it

    Honestly big dawg... I wouldn't have even gave them another chance to do the work. 1st they said they can get to your diagnosis in 8 days... took longer... 2nd they gave you an estimate days afters and had to touch base with Honda for the repair recommendations... 3rd they gave you an "incomplete" estimate. I used to be a service writer and it's best practice to over estimate and separate required repairs vs recommended. Granted I was in the car industry and not motorcycle industry but the fact he didn't even explain in detail what the labor service entails is an immediate no from me for any mechanic. Hope the bike gets fixed. Love your vids! 🤙🏽

    I also have the dreaded oil leak on my 2021 Rebel 1100. I was quoted $800ish with stator and $400ish without. That included LOF. I’ll be repairing it myself when the outside temp gets warmer in Minnesota! It started leaking at about 5k miles. I have over 8k on it now and is getting worse!

    • @spartanx169x
      @spartanx169x ปีที่แล้ว

      Leaking at 5K miles? This is such a disappointment. Honda was built on its reputation for reliability. I won't even consider getting one of these Rebel 1100's.

    • @nathanschmieg2889
      @nathanschmieg2889 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spartanx169x Honestly I wouldn't let that stop you from getting one. The bike is really a great bike for the price and the repair is really simple. I work on my own bikes and is only a $25 tube of sealer. I'm glad there's really no problems with the engine management and DCT systems. That would really be big money! A slight oil leak that can be easily repaired is still pretty cost effective in my opinion.

    Honda needs to do something for this issue. Happy you’ve documented this.

    So i have a 22 Rebel 11, manual. And now I am petrified of having this same problem. Frist thing I am doing when I get home is popping this cover off and checking the stater wire for leaks. Curious tho, if it is not leaking. Should I just go ahead and put some Honda-bond on it and "prevent" this leak. Or wait and see if it develops?
    It saddens me to know that your baby is giving you all this trouble, but it has definitely helped this rebel rider. Thank you, and hopefully you get a fast and inexpensive fix. Maybe even Honda themselves will own up to it and put out the recall notice....

    My KTM 390 has a very minor leak/weep from its stator location. Many 390s have that. I fixed it permanently in 3 minutes using some high heat silicone. I also like you thought it's a Honda not a new motor just some tweaks, don't need the warranty. I have already had one front shock blow and my water pump failed. I know because yes coolant came out the weep hole but it was pouring out when I was running it. Replaced it myself but I am also going to contact Honda. Love all your content keep up the great work 👍

    Sad to see, that they never got to fix. If it was just a thing with the 21' Model i'd say things like that can happen and if the 22' and/or 23' Model are okay in that matter. But seems that is not the case, but as long as it can be fixed that easily and you have it covered under warranty it's not that bad anymore. Still sucks tho.
    I'm a pretty new rider and plan on getting myself the 1100 DCT (Really dig the twist and go aspect and being able to just cruise like on a scooter basically). But i don't really dig a faulty bike, even tho apart from this issue it really looks fine and so far every bike has its problems and there is always the case of bad luck to have that one faulty bike that is out of the norm in its series. Hope i get spared from that fate, still kinda looking forward to this bike since it's the only cruiser offering that DCT (obviously because its a Honda thing).
    But when i decide to actually get one and this leak appears, i'm hoping for it to appear within warranty. If not i guess it wont be too costy here where i live, best case would be being lucky enough to be spared of this issue at all. Guess time will tell. xD

    I hope Honda realizes that the dealers in the DMV region are exactly why I won't by another Honda. Pete's is supposed to be the "better one".
    Does it seem like the stator housing should not have oil in it? I feel like stopping the leak at the outside of that wire is just making the problem worse (pooling oil in the stator housing). I'm not a mechanic, but I don't typically see oil and electrical parts mixing. More likely the stator is being replaced because they are worried it is contaminated with oil, but the genius at Pete's doesn't understand.

    There should be no additional labor charge to do the oil change. However, of course, there will be an oil charge for the oil itself and filter (if done) , as well as a disposal fee for the used oil. All of which should have been included in the original estimate.

    So Pete’s cycle was just trying to screw you over. I’m a service tech at a Honda shop while I haven’t seen this issue on the Rebel 1100 yet I have had to fix the same stator issue on an Africa Twin which is the same engine. Like you said a little dab of Honda bond on the stator grommet and it’s good to go. Good ol Pete was just trying to get you for a $400 lick. As for oil coming from the weep hole again you are correct oil shouldn’t come from that hole. The water pump is driven by the oil pump and there is an o-ring on the water pump shaft that acts as an oil seal. That o-ring has failed and allowed oil to seep through. I would get that issue fixed before I worried about the stator because you don’t want oil in your coolant. Sorry you had to be jerked around by a shady shop.
