      @@frankfromchicago9248 Exactly. They're well aware of the problem, and this issue is 100% covered in the general engine warranty for the motorcycle because we've literally done them a few times already on different bikes at my shop. And Burch not being made aware of these by the cycle shop he took this to just shows that the shop, or at least the CSA that handled his intake forms and maintenance request was at best, dishonest about the issue.

    That bike shop just gained a lot of bad PR and word of mouth, hope they feel it was worth it especially coming from a prominent youtuber based nearby. Back in the day (when I was a kid!), I purchased a new 1975 Honda 750 K5. Put over 100k trouble-free miles on it; went cross country in 1979, and toured up and down the east coast and locally quite frequently. Also commuted to work and college. No recalls, never broke down and was easy to maintain; I performed most of the service on my own.

  • @DaroffApFire
    @DaroffApFire ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Yo Burch, master tech of 15 years here. That oil leak is warrantied through Honda because it's a common issue from the factory. It should have ONLY costed you the amount of the oil change. I've done a few of them at my shop. The reason why they are trying to charge you for this, is because shops make very little (if any) money on warranty jobs.

    • @onecookieboy
      @onecookieboy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We used to actually lose money on warrantee work, simply because the labour rate was lower and it stopped you from doing work at the full rate, also warrantee work is notoriously hard to do in the amount of time they allow.

    • @DaroffApFire
      @DaroffApFire ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@onecookieboy Yep I've had the same issue from time to time. But I don't do my work simply to make money. If i was concerned with making loads of money there are many other things I could be doing other than running a shop and being a tech myself. I do it because I enjoy it, and it helps those who need it. And that's enough for me.
      That said, this job about the oil leaks on these bikes isn't labor intensive and can be done in about an hour. So even if the cycle shop Burch went to wasn't doing it under warranty (which is already a huge red flag about their business practices), then their goal is to simply rip people off by lying to them. And that honestly pisses me off as someone in the trade.

      Shit tires will cause any bike to have issues. Buy better tires and these bikes have zero issues with wobble. As for this oil leak, it isn't a big deal and is already covered through Honda's warranty. Pete's Cycle was just being dishonest and not wanting to "lose" money on doing a warranty shop.

      @mexifry222 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@DaroffApFire This is a decently expensive bike and what is supposed to be one of the most reputable brands. The tires shouldn't be god-tier or michelins but they better not be "shit tires". I, however, haven't experienced any problems whatsoever with the Rebel 1100's I've ridden at 100MPH speeds, even while making turns. And I've been on a few. I'm not sure that's entirely what's happening here, i can buy that Honda have changed the guidance and actually do want the stator change this time (rather than it being the dealer going rogue), but if the partzilla price for a stator is 280 or so, and the dealer price is 420, Honda going over the dealer's head and offering a free stator to the customer means the dealer misses out on their roughly $150 markup just on the part.
      Amazingly, just after that, the dealer helpfully remembers they were apparently supposed to whack on £150 for an oil change. i wouldn't even call it sketchy, it's outright slimy AF

    Not directly related, but I needed my fuel pump in my CBR250R fixed. Honda quoted me a 2 month wait for the part, and $500AU for the part, excluding fitment. I was kind of pissed off, so I politely declined the quote. I got a rebuild kit from a local parts supplier and in a couple of hours had the problem fixed. Good job not giving in to that shop. That is 100% some scam stuff. Unless there is evidence of communication between that shop and Honda regarding the good will of the part, I would not be quick to believe it. They easily could have found a cheap or used replacement part and were ready to be duplicitous because the entire conversation you recorded sounds duplicitous. Hopefully Honda does a recall, however, rather than just do a public campaign on your prospective channels, have you guys talked about doing a call in, where you get people together with this problem and you all call into Honda all in the same day. Essentially run a call in lobby with people affected by this. That generally is going to get some big corporate attention.

    I did the stator sealant job on my CB1100. Very easy job. Just do the job yourself cut out the dealer, forget the warranty… The dealer would probably do it wrong anyway… On the bleed valve; on my CRF there are two grommets inside one for oil and one for coolant. I had coolant leak out and had it replaced. Still leaked a little tho. Never had oil out of it. Out of curiosity I visited a dealer and saw 2 new CRF 300 bikes one leaking coolant and one leaking oil.

They want way too much money and there's enough info on forums to handle most every issue. Did a carb rebuild, stator replacement, valve adjustment, rear end replacement (shaft driven Vulcan), speedo sprocket, brakes and oil changes. Over the years I probably saved thousands in dealer markups/labor hours and really learned to understand my machine. This is the same thing I'm going through right now with the Honda dealer ship here in Jacksonville NC. I bought a new 2023 Honda Grom from them last June that only has 700 miles on it. The ABS light keeps coming on and staying on, and the rear wheel bearing and dust seal blew out a few weeks a go. I took my bike to them for repairs, which they stated would be covered under the factory warranty. I get a call a few days later telling me they need to do a diagnostic on it before they can fix it. They know what's wrong already, so I ask them why they couldn't just fix it. I was told that the technician would need the diagnostic before he would do any work. I think it's there way of saying we want your 150.00 out of pocket first. Then I was told it my be June before I get my bike back because of the back log. I'm thinking of calling Honda corp myself to see what the problem is. Stay strong and ride safe brother.

But I’m not fixing something cuz you say so I want to diagnose and see what the issue is and what caused it. Then you get a warranty. If I just do what you say then there’s no warranty. They had to have. These oil leaks seem to be happening on the 2021 model years and the 2022 have been fine. Honda most likely figured it out and fixed it on future models. If thats the case then they should just recall it and fix it.

  • @raybrensike42
    @raybrensike42 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Doesn't that sound just like a shop, though? If you have an oil leak it's likely a gasket or a seal, so they act like draining and refilling the oil would not be a part of that service. That would be extra, like they should do that because you just got clean oil.
    I remember back when stator wires were on the dry side of a crankshaft seal. I saw a Triumph having the same sort of problem on you tube. Are electrical wires supposed to run in oil? Man, this isn't like the old days at all. Welcome to the modern world, I guess. I liked the old one better.

    This is precisely why I prefer old bikes - simple design and simple maintenance and repairs you can usually do yourself. Modern bikes are complicated, require specialist equipment and training to maintain and repair and usually involve replacing entire components rather than repair / modify the particular issues. Whenever I see a bike on the back of a Tow Truck, seemingly it’s always a “new” bike.

    Honestly big dawg... I wouldn't have even gave them another chance to do the work. 1st they said they can get to your diagnosis in 8 days... took longer... 2nd they gave you an estimate days afters and had to touch base with Honda for the repair recommendations... 3rd they gave you an "incomplete" estimate. I used to be a service writer and it's best practice to over estimate and separate required repairs vs recommended. Granted I was in the car industry and not motorcycle industry but the fact he didn't even explain in detail what the labor service entails is an immediate no from me for any mechanic. Hope the bike gets fixed. Love your vids! 🤙🏽

    So Pete’s cycle was just trying to screw you over. I’m a service tech at a Honda shop while I haven’t seen this issue on the Rebel 1100 yet I have had to fix the same stator issue on an Africa Twin which is the same engine. Like you said a little dab of Honda bond on the stator grommet and it’s good to go. Good ol Pete was just trying to get you for a $400 lick. As for oil coming from the weep hole again you are correct oil shouldn’t come from that hole. The water pump is driven by the oil pump and there is an o-ring on the water pump shaft that acts as an oil seal. That o-ring has failed and allowed oil to seep through. I would get that issue fixed before I worried about the stator because you don’t want oil in your coolant. Sorry you had to be jerked around by a shady shop.

    My KTM 390 has a very minor leak/weep from its stator location. Many 390s have that. I fixed it permanently in 3 minutes using some high heat silicone. That was applied over a year ago and it's rock solid still. Edit: just watched till the end. Fair points, Honda should address this. Are other models with the same engine leaking too?

    If you just put the same stator on when the problem is the grommet, won't it just leak again? If they are just going to seal it better when they replace it that means the stator doesn't need to be replaced at all, right?

    Had a similar issue with Crofton Powersports on my Africa Twin. Even with an extended warranty, they tried to charge me for a diagnostic fee. Ended up taking the bike to Easton. I live two and half hours from Crofton. Local shop is less than 10 miles away and basically refused to look at the bike even though it was still under original warranty. So much for Honda "dealer network." Been buying from a local Suzuki/Triumph dealer for last several bikes because I know they will stand behind any issues.

    16:14 that is Honda‘s quick answer to a factory defect. It’s not acceptable end of discussion. They should be stepping up to the plate and obviously they are not. When I trade in my 2021 Kawasaki, I will not be trading it for a Honda. I’ll be trading it for a manufacturer that takes care of their customers when there’s a problem.

      @@spartanx169x Honestly I wouldn't let that stop you from getting one. The bike is really a great bike for the price and the repair is really simple. I work on my own bikes and is only a $25 tube of sealer. I'm glad there's really no problems with the engine management and DCT systems. That would really be big money! A slight oil leak that can be easily repaired is still pretty cost effective in my opinion.

    This reminds me of what was said in Fight Club, “Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.” I think this might be the reason Honda hasn’t done a recall on the oil leak issues of the Rebel 1100.
