    Mariah's runs are so airy and dreamy, for some reason she sounds better without instrumentation, her voice is music by itself. Please do more isolated vocals 😭💖

    Most singers who are avid melisma users tend to use is it in a more showy, "front and center" kinda way, but hardly anyone can weave complex melismas into the song compositions as subtly as Mariah. Sometimes, it's so subtle that u don't notice it but when u take it out, u immediately feel like something is missing

    • @whitepaper5241
      @whitepaper5241 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Maybe because Mariah writes her own songs and uses her full potential as a vocalist. Every aspect of her voice is her instrument, and she uses it as a way to express her emotions in the songs, that's why her vocal runs/adlibs don't sound "forced and showy". Most melismatic singers usually sing the songs that were written for them and show off what they can do with the songs.

    Some people 'underestimate' Mariah's ability of doing runs and riffs as all of her runs are often not separately outstanding.
    It is a part of her melody.
    Most of every sentence she sings has a tiny run - always.
    She splits one letter, one word into a small runs.
    Or even a whole phrase.
    They dont realise it until other singers or themselves actually cover Mariah's song, just sound weird, incomplete, not smooth at all.
    Mariah has her own unique way to do runs and riffs. They are always coming from her musicianship of writing and producing. Therefore, she understands her runs.

  • @kamilaford5752
    @kamilaford5752 2 ปีที่แล้ว +345

    A vocal coach by the name of Catherine Rose Smith put it perfectly, “it’s so over the top, but so subtle at the same time.” Like…the sheer number of runs she puts in each song truly is over the top, but somehow it all makes sense and it doesn’t get annoying or tired.

    I can't fully explain it but one of the reasons why she's almost impossible to replicate is her riffing is musical and intentional in the sense that the focus of her riffs is to enhance the song and not to show off speed/complexity (tho she could totally go with this approach).
    That's why when other very agile singers cover her songs, they still pale in comparison to her. It just doesn't sound as nice tbh.

    • @krissy9128
      @krissy9128 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I agree. There are singers that can match Mariah in terms of complexity and precision of runs (e.g. Tori). However, her sheer musical genius/ musicality sets her apart.
      The way she's able to implement intricate melismas is like no other. Every single line/bar in Mariah's songs have soooo many notes...and they often go unnoticed if you don't have an "ear for music". It's not an in your face "look how skilled I am" kind of thing. They fit into her melodies perfectly.
      Plus, her tone, soft/angelic airyness, and TRANSITIONS...Oh the transitions! Cannot be duplicated. Seamless. Lol
      That's why a few can imitate fairly well but it just doesn't hit the same.

  • @rawr3122

    Also, this is very apparent in sad songs. She's masterful in making riffs that sound so emotionally vulnerable.

  • @onedollarbleach6891

    The difference between Mariah and other riffers is Mariah employs melisma and is based more on musicality. A lot of the other girls who are great runners often overrun or get repetitive. For instance, tori is a fantastic vocalist and her agility is excellent. She does show out a lot with creative runs but a lot of other times her runs feel repetitive and showy/don’t fit the music. Mariah has immense agility but also understands the importance of nuance and restraint

    3. can do runs in mid
    4. can do runs in belts
    5. can do runs in head tone
    6. can do runs in whistle
    7. can do runs and switch from husky chest to falseto to whisper to clear chest in one vocal line. she can change between 10 vocal textures in one run. beat that.
    8. I guess most importantly, unlike many who randomly throws runs for a show off which doesn't suit the music well, she musically and geniously fully incorporate the runs in her music that they blend well together

    I always tell my students, if you are gonna use a bunch of melismas, make sure to change registers often and use dynamics. That way they won’t seem overbearing. Whitney and Mariah are the queens of this style of singing. Most singers don’t use their different registers these days. A bit of a pity because hearing a passagio is one of the most sublime things to listen to.

  • @chaelan6014

    i think it's the way she controls the speed of her runs. she doesn't just run up or down with the same speed or just bouncing notes off of eachother, she reaches for the emotion in a note and holds it out, making the lyrics bloom and takes us on a journey. think of it like a tour guide. she stops to show you the relevancy of the sights and knowing when to move on to the next instead of walking while telling the story. it leaves so much space for complex layering too, making each note blend and not just doing a run in different keys stacked on top of eachother.

Unlike this singers who only does show off and use their runs for complexity and not for music. Unlike Mariah who had alot of complex runs but still fits the music very very well. Sometimes even more complex than these singers were trying to show off. They are times were Mariah's were showing off some great complex runs but that's to prove that she could do everything in runs and her show off moments still fits the song lol.

I feel like Tori is on the level of Mariah with the precision and may actually be more consistent with her precision of her runs but I feel like Mariah is very advanced with her musicality compared to Tori which just takes her runs to the next level. People just don't like the fact that Mariah Carey is one of the goats or the goat when it comes to vocals, style, versatility, standard, songwriting, and producing. You cannot find somebody like Mariah Carey and people disrespect this legend for her voice changed a lot. But what can you expect from somebody who has been singing for decades and who has been using her voice from lowest to highest register and singing different genres throughout her career? Although Madonna beats her with sales, we can't deny that Mariah is truly a legend and a gem to the music industry.

    Wow. What a well made video. I love that you included Ariana and Tori to compare to Mariah and complimented them to explain the differences instead of negatively comparing them. Mariah's studio recordings (especially from Daydream-Charm) are the most thought out and have the most musicality to them. She puts thought into every single note, inflection, harmony, and even polyphonic tones. There are so many songs aside from the ones in this video that showcase this as well- Lullaby, Candy Bling, Breakdown, Bliss, etc. I know this is a lamb account but I would love to see a video like this for Whitney, as imo she is the only singer in existence who's melisma remotely matches Mariah's. I think a lot of this has to do with her perfect pitch. Her runs sound so woven into the song because shes not just using them as flashy displays of her vocal capabilities, rather as a kind of extrapolation of other elements in the song that shes hearing as she sings the main melody (the chord progression, harmonies from other instruments, etc)

    Love this. As a teen, I just enjoyed listening to her songs assuming anybody could sing them. Coming back to her music years later, it's awesome finding out how intricate and subtle and hard it is. Also, it has biased me in some ways because I'll listen to the other singers and ... the songs lack the fluidity in how they sing. (For example, I like Taylor Swift, but the girl could use a few lessons on how runs make songs more enjoyable, as well as leaning into 'stretching' the words. She always seems to be rushing to the next lyric rather than focusing on the actual lyric like Mariah does.)

  • @Commander_Cat
    @Commander_Cat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Mariah definitely still has the most intricate runs and riffs I think, the way she tells a story with it and so complex with the timing and register change and agility. I would say Tori Kelly definitely is one of the closest to her ability-wise, among the mainstream artists. Her runs in this vids aren't her most mind-blowing ones, there are others- long and intricate ones from her acoustic videos. I would say another singer that really uses runs to tell a story and her voice as an instrument is Jessie J. Recently her singing is in an odd space and I don't feel like she's connecting properly with her musicality because of things she's going through, however I've seen most of her videos and her past videos in gigs, concerts and some acoustic sessions were where her musicality and vocal ability shines for me. Also on the China's Singer where it was more refined. In the past she never sung a song the same way twice because of how she does runs on the fly according to her emotions in the moment. Recently she seemed to repeat this "basic" trills as if she didn't know she already did them. There's a disconnection with her 2022 performances overall.

  • @KevenTalks
    @KevenTalks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Here's the difference: the musicality. She uses her voice as an instrument to complement the track. She thinks & sings as a songwriter.
    The others sing like how they imagine a singer is supposed to sound, like a girl singing into her hairbrush in the mirror....mimicking, as opposed to authentically being a true artist who happens to sing.

    Her melismata are always accompanied by transition & ascending or descending notes, which add complexity, let alone the whistle register. As a singer (classically), I personally don't consider the riffs & runs "complex" unless the note intervals are. "Runs", "Riffs" and "Melissma" are defined as a series of notes, not registers. Mariah's runs don't fall into the category of 'complex' for me because she tends to use adjacent notes. Switching notes quickly and switching registers IMO is more-so a matter of agility.
    Truly 'complex' runs incorporate intentionally sharp, intentionally flat or 'tense' notes that add dissonance, and are typically followed by or include notes to resolve the note progression. The over all goal and effect is "tension" followed by "release". A good example is 4:35, The first note is intentionally belted sharp, followed by a note 1 semitone lower, then with the 2nd note in key, she executed a run that resolves the key -
    In terms of note intervals, Tori's runs are more complex, as are other singers like Beyonce, Brandy & Jazmine Sullivan. Mariah's runs hit different because of her agility, range and multitude of textures, but if you translated Mariah's runs to a piano it would reveal that they're not that complex. In fact, Mariah's runs are actually quite melodic, tidy and musically in tune with the song which is probably why they're among the most satisfying in all of singing.
    To Mariah's credit, it's generally better to keep things tidy because overly complex singing tends to be jarring and perceived as 'oversinging' even when technically correct. A lot of riffers do the 'because I can' and run like they're running for president (caugh Beyonce). Also, deeply spaced runs that borrow from different keys can be offputting if the song doesn't call for it. I tend to like deeply spaced runs because it's harder to tell where the singer will go and I like the suspense (See: Vision of love).
    In short, Mariah's use of registers is what's complex, not necessarily her runs. That's not to say her runs aren't extremely difficult. Mariah still has some of the best runs in history.

    Ariana, Mariah and Tori are all amazing singers.
    Ariana has improved over the years, and Sweetener is one of her best tours, but it was all older clips from her first tours. Her newer music is incredible and has so many whistle notes. No offence, just my opinion as someone who has listened to Ariana for 10 years 🤍

    Mariah Carey sings like the melodies that Italian baroque composers wrote for the violin, oboe, or the flute for their concertos.

    A lot of singers now use riffs and runs just to show off, and obviously too much done.. unlike Mariah, she does that thing naturally and still connected to the melodies of the song, and NOT Show off, because she already knew she's good at it.. not trying to impress..
