"That didn't go as planned...." | LITTLE WHITE RACE 2022

  • It was up in the air whether I was going to be able to make it back to the little white race this year, but I couldn't resist. It is just one of the better races of the year, especially when it is at nicer flows like we were gonna have. Although I still really like the race at low water, it being at 3'5" makes it one of the flowiest and best race courses. It has some of the trickier moves, pushier lines, and non stop for 15 minutes. Although I failed hard, I am still stoked I made it out, and I will just have to get some redemption next year!
    Results:
    1st- Todd Wells (Long Boat)
    2nd- Alec Voorhees
    3rd- Owen Doyle
    River: Little White Salmon, PNW
    Level: 3'5"
Difficulty (at these flows) : 4.6

Made me giggle when you looked upstream and there’s your paddle, right where you left it 😂

Jesus that is the IRONMAN of endurance kayak races. I wondered why you shrugged off the hand rolls, until I realized how long that race is.

That river was relentless AF. I was exhausted from watching the video. Really smooth paddling from you Dane.

Your like is crazy straight as always. No wonder you win these all the time, you paddle this like most people paddle flat water, barely a stroke out of cadence the whole time.

On a more serious note, a lot of the time in sports in a dynamic or semi-dynamic environment, you see people make one mistake and then they keep making more because their concentration has gone. But you don't seem to make any obvious errors afterwards. I've got two questions: Do you feel that you were making a lot of errors after the incident and if you weren't, what do you attribute that to?

I definitely made a few mistakes but minor over such a long race. I think just knowing that I have already lost but sort of "adrenaline" to see if I can make up as much of that time as possible. So focusing harder on nailing the lines.

@@danejacksonkayak I hadn't really experienced my first white water float until this year in late May on the Paint River in the UP. I didn't have the balls to run either of the Hemlocks, but as chief photographer I couldn't help but notice the focus on everyones faces. Kept expecting smiles, but they knew what they were doing. Everyone else in the crew brought We-No-Nah's but the smoothest float down ended up being with my Cuda HD.

Are there any safety boaters trailing behind the solo racers? Where you lost your paddle looked like it could've gone a lot worse

For the majority of the race you are on your own, but they put safety in the highest risks rapids.

I think they announced 14:28, but it was hard to hear. The next slower time was 14:34, so that's at least in the ballpark. The 1st place time was 14:15.
