Alex, I noticed that you were asked in your last video about the progress of the Iron Man suit, and you commented that if it was not metal then perhaps it would not count and this caused problems with the weight. I would like to think that I speak for everyone when I say this is not the case! The function and practicality of the suit is far more important. It does not really matter how it is made or what it is made of, what matters is how effective the suit would be to maximise mobility, strength and protection while minimising thickness and weight. Looking forward to 10 years time with you flying around in your finished suit, badass and bulletproof!
Hello Alex! A little tip that you may find useful when it comes to polishing resin. If you use car headlight polishing paste with a microfiber cloth, you can 'buff' the resin to an amazingly high polish. I learned this while trying to create resin dice from the channel Rybonator on youtube, this may be a level of polish that is unnecessary for your goal, but I figured that it wouldn't hurt to share! The little trick about using 2 cups for the epoxy mixing is gold. I've looked at uncountable videos on epoxy use and no one's mentioned that before, yet plenty have had issues with uncured/poorly mixed epoxy. Also, washing the part between swapping grits/polishes is something few talk about, but I had to learn the hard way.
What a fantastically detailed video, thanks so much for going over all of the process, and *especially* the pitfalls / troubles you ran into. It's really helpful for people who want to start out with this kind of work.
There are water soluable filaments on the market. They are usually used for support material during printing. You could use filament like this to make parts with complex geometry and dissolve the mold Later. You can pack complex geometry with small scraps and loose thread carbon fiber. It will look non perfect but will be functional

Consider using a bottle jack press mixed with a vacuum bag to make a higher compressed mold which will remove more defects while being able to use even more layers of fibers. This should help with making the parts stronger and more "bulletproof".

I have 2 questions, One is far more complex than the other. The complex one is first : Would it be possible to save manual work time & effort at the mold phase of production by having an interior and exterior mold in a lock & key style as a press? meaning having the concave portion that you put resin and fiber in like you do now, but with the addition of a convex print, so that each sheet of carbon fiber could be coated on each side, inserted, then the convex part is on top like a sandwich, and then pressed with a vice or weak hydraulic press? it would save the manual effort of going one layer at a time and filling in details, as the convex part could also include pores to allow gas to escape, which means the actual labor time is lower. This is also essentially how coins are minted, and vinyl records where produced. I would be interested to know if that works with carbon fiber and resin with more complex geometry than simply a sheet. The second question is much simpler, Why can molds not be re-used / would it be possible to make a multi-use mold either as a 3d print, or use a 3d print to create a non-3d printed multi-use mold?
@@austindavies6371 yeah, most molds are reusable up to a certain number of times before they wear out. Im just curious about the effects on 3d printed molds. Do they crack, or just loose detail? At this level, since things get somewhat sanded, the loss of detail wouldnt be that big, but for moving parts would be serious. Does mold release damage the plastic? It just seemed very glossed over in the video.
@ALEXLAB Alex, check out this video about compression moulds with carbon fiber. "Make Forged Carbon Fibre Parts Using Compression Moulding". The printed moulds were two or three parts. After layering down the CF (he was using chopped carbon tow) he compressed the mould in a vice and let it cure. The parts seemed to have pretty high detail, and I suspect this method would help ensure the fine detail of parts shows up in the finished product.

Basically each layer would have an individual square, with an individual weave pattern. In your opinion does it matter, or are the benefits negligible?

Loved the video. It inspired me to start 3d printing with the eventual plan of making helmets and such out of carbon fiber like this! Ok, Alex, brass tax; I've looked everywhere but I can't find a tutorial to invert the 3d design the way you did, how did you do it?
I would print the part that I wanted and then use it as a press mold into a wet sand bed (like they use when metal casting) so that the fiber forms to the printed part with less variation due to the mass of the wet sand acting like the other side of the mold. I would also print and cast the areas that have complex geometry as separate parts and then seam them into the other elements of the total part by using the same technique you do, but alternating the layers of the composite so that the resin merges them together into a completed piece.
Describing the above method better: design your parts with some deliberate overhang (say 5mm on each side and do NOT treat them with the resin) so that when you seam them together the 5mm overhang becomes 5mm of joining fiber and can account for joints and sharp bends.

Cling film as a release ' agent' tends to work very well with molds like this.

I reuse the mold I use for my bikes front mudguard, but its fiberglass not 3d printed.

If you have single use molds anyways, you can just break your mold and free your part that way.
