ADHD diagnoses on the rise in adults, here are the symptoms

  • When you think of someone with ADHD, you probably think of a child-and with good reason.
At least some of the symptoms of ADHD have to emerge before the age of 12 to receive the diagnosis, but ADHD can also affect adults.
If left untreated it can lead to poor school performance, struggles at work, and turmoil in relationships.
Dr. Julie Braciszewski with Monarch Behavioral Health in Bloomfield Hills says roughly 4% of all adults have ADHD, but the symptoms look different than childhood ADHD.
A study published in the JAMA Open Network shows an 123% increase of ADHD in adults from 2007-2016.

I was severely traumatized years ago as a teenage, got diagnosed with ADHD. Spent my whole life fighting ADHD. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

Some things I noticed about my ADHD:
    1) I can complete tasks WAY better if I am SHOWN what to do not told.
    2) Learning a new skill/task is tough because it takes me longer, but once I understand it I can master it
    3) Reading a book is torture. I can read three pages and not keep track of what is happening. It's like I am reading words, not sentences that progress the story.
    4) I tend to interrupt people mid conversation mostly because I get excited to see if I am thinking the same thing.
    5) I can lose track of time if I am heavily interested in something and not realize how much time has passed which makes multiple tasks a problem.
    6) Tasks that are boring to me is like pulling teeth and I get frustrated and irritable trying to complete a task that I have to do

hi i want to ask, are all people with ADHD hate to read books? just like you, i can only read 2-3 pages, i hate long paragraphs. im not sure if i have ADHD but, i think i do.. oh! and one more question. when you are learning in school for example, history, did u study by reading the book after the lesson or just pay attention to the teacher once in class to understand the whole thing? im more into understanding during the lesson, and if it's a cool story, i can remember it for years. is that ADHD too?

Getting diagnosed at 27 made my entire life suddenly make sense. ADHD to me has been forgetting my keys 3 times in the span of a few months, losing my ID twice, spacing out and thinking about random thoughts mid conversation, almost getting hit by cars because I was in my thoughts crossing the street, laying down knowing I have a test and just not being capable of doing any work despite knowing the test is easy and I'll ace it if I just get to work.
It's really hard to explain to people, even I thought I was just lazy and just accepted that this was who I was. My life would've kept going down the drain if I hadn't gotten help. Looking back I can't believe I thought my behavior wasn't a CLEAR AS DAY sign, but nobody ever told me. Had to figure it out for myself, and even that wasn't easy because I bought into the whole "nah, I just need to have discipline and willpower." Which is extremely frustrating because your brain literally does not function that way on a physiological level, it's a losing, and exhausting battle.

Listening to this and reading all these comments makes me think I am going to go get tested. Many times, I feel like my motor never stops running, I overthink everything, forget what my boss said 5 minutes ago, forget to turn in documents or answer emails, and battle with procrastination and being organized. I feel like I have more brain fog than ever. I do not like crowds; it's a battle to go to work, go to church, or go to public events. I literally want to cry. As a result of all of this, I have felt hopeless and depressed. By the end of the day, I am so mentally and emotionally exhausted that I just come home and fall asleep. I have always felt a great deal of social anxiety and fear of not knowing what to say to people or how to respond to their questions. My brain is pinging constantly from one thought to the next, so then I am not focusing or able to take in all the person in front of me is saying. I think to the outside world, I am emotionally and mentally unavailable, checked out, so to speak. It's miserable, and I do feel that because of all of this, my marriage, family/friend relationships, work relationships have suffered. I cannot even just enjoy people because my brain is shouting louder than life. I did not even think about ADHD. I remember when I was in First grade, the school psychologist met with me and asked me to complete various tasks. I think my teacher and her could both see something there, but maybe ADHD was not a thing back then. Going to get tested. Hope this is the answer for my "motor" that is always making me overthink every single thing.

I was diagnosed with ADHD while I was in the 4th grade and I’m now 28 years old. I was on medication when I was younger. Apparently to my parents, I didn’t like how the medication made me feel. So they made a decision to take me off it. Ever since. I noticed my ADHD is a lot for people to deal with. So I have learned to try to be more slow on my conversations. Allows others to speak and listen, staying focused on certain tasks I do and just relax. Very hard indeed but I’m very happy knowing I can handle it on my own the best I can and not let medication or ADHD control my life. Someone told me years ago “I wish I had ADHD.” My response “NO you don’t. It’s real and it’s a bitch to deal with.”

ADHD was really overlooked & even was discriminated against.
I remembered back in the 1990s & the early 2000s, there were cases of discriminated bullying on ADHD people. Bullies claimed ADHD are retarded losers of society. But in reality, almost anyone can have ADHD. Therefore for those bullies who claims ADHD are retarded, newsflash: we live in earth, where there's NO such thing as "normal" & mistakes/errors are INEVITABLE. Therefore don't be a bully & have awareness in how to PROPERLY interact with any people around you (especially how to PROPERLY interact with ADHD folks without generating social conflict)

Wish I was diagnosed earlier! I had to repeat the 4th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade and expelled indefinitely before making it to 8th grade. They kept sending me to schools with real criminals and that introduced me to gangs and drugs after being kicked out of school. I went my entire 20s from job to job. At least 50 jobs or more by 29 years old. I also cut off my loving marriage because she was starting to misunderstand me like everyone in my life did before they gave up on me or did me wrong. Then I had a kid on the way and I freaked out. I finally went to a doctor and was diagnosed. In just a few years, I've been able to earn my GED, college degree and have a career that I love. I'm a very active and involved father in the PTA. It's getting worse as the responsibilities and age increase but I constantly remind myself where I come from and that helps a bit.

I have ADHD. When I was in law school, I used to record all the classes because often only my body was in class, but my thoughts were elsewhere, meaning I had a lot of energy, not to mention the anxiety, which makes this comorbidity even more challenging for ADHD. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 28. Until then, I wasted a lot of time with so much energy I have. Since I was diagnosed, I sought out a specialist psychologist and also a specialist doctor in ADHD (but the race was tough to find these professionals qualified in ADHD), it was the best investment for my life. After starting treatment, I started getting the best grades in college, learned to speak 2 other languages, today I can produce much more. But the struggle is constant. It is very worthwhile to seek treatment. I have the energy of a child, this is not normal, however, my doctors help me distribute all this energy so that I can produce and not procrastinate, however, the comorbidity of ADHD which also has anxiety makes everything more difficult for ADHD. Almost no one talks about people who have ADHD with comorbidity. Hugs from Brazil.

@@katlablessed What I did to make my life better and more productive was crucial: I was wasting a lot of time in life, spending the day procrastinating, not sleeping early, and not practicing sports. I knew I had ADHD, but I wasn't doing anything to improve. So, I sought out a psychologist. However, it wasn't great at first; actually, I was looking for the wrong type of professional. Then I found a psychiatrist, and he recommended a psychologist who works with cognitive-behavioral therapy. Yes, it can't be just any psychologist; at least the others didn't work for me. Sometimes it works for you. I found out I had the worst diagnosis of ADHD, meaning ADHD with comorbidities, which means I had ADHD and anxiety disorder. This is very important because it could be that a person only has an anxiety disorder, which also causes a lot of bad things. So, my doctor prescribed only 10mg of Ritalin once a day in the morning, and my psychologist used cognitive-behavioral methods. Slowly, she removed some unhealthy habits, such as irregular sleep schedules, lack of daily physical exercise, and excessive use of social media. Additionally, I silenced my WhatsApp.
I started practicing physical exercises every day; initially, 20 minutes of walking, but now I exercise for 45 minutes a day, every day. I don't consume alcoholic beverages, sleep a minimum of 7 hours a day, and continue to use only 10mg of Ritalin after breakfast. I don't drink coffee, soda, or alcohol. In fact, you need to want to change. It's not enough to go to the doctor and not use the medications he prescribes, nor is it enough to go to the psychologist and not follow their advice.
Don't use medications without consulting your doctor. Here in Brazil, you can only buy Ritalin with a prescription. Find the psychologist that's best for you. If you don't like the first one, find another. I don't know how it is in the United States; here in Brazil, there are private and public psychologists. In my case, my health plan covers the doctor and four sessions per month with the psychologist. I see my psychologist every week; the doctor every three months.
My life changed. I believe you need both professionals: the doctor and the psychologist. My psychologist changed all my habits. I believe that in America, you have to pay for medical treatments, right? If you can't afford a doctor or psychologist, I'll give you some advice: avoid coffee or any product containing caffeine, thermogenics, alcoholic beverages, and fatty foods. Drink plenty of water and exercise daily (consult your doctor before starting any exercise). Don't use Ritalin without consulting your doctor; don't use medication on your own. The doctor studied for this; only he can tell you what's good for you.
The result of all this was that I finished law school, passed a very difficult exam, and became a lawyer, with a postgraduate degree. I learned to speak two other languages and have a good job. I am a happy person. Having ADHD is not a problem; it's not the end of the world. You can be whatever you want, even with ADHD. People see ADHD as if it were the end of the world. Don't waste your time. You can and are capable of being everything in this life. Today, there are many medications for ADHD, but don't use them without consulting your doctor.
if you cannot see a doctor or psychologist, I, in your country, will tell you what you can do to improve: do not smoke, do not drink alcoholic beverages, never drink coffee, do not use thermogenics or anything else that makes you agitated, drink plenty of water, sleep for at least 8 hours a day (nighttime sleep is more important), engage in physical exercise for 40 minutes a day, even if it's just a walk. ATTENTION: Before exercising, consult a doctor to see if you can exercise; start your physical exercises slowly. Never give up on your dreams; you can be anything you want to be. Today, I am 55 years old and am learning my third language. Next year, I will fulfill an old dream: I will go to university to start my Medicine course. You know what's great about us with ADHD? We have a lot of energy. Count on me; keep going. I hope I've helped you and anyone reading this message. Big hug from Brazil

@@hannaelsajacob9430 Hello,Yes, I finished law school and passed the exam to have the right to practice law. Here in Brazil, when you study law, to become a lawyer, you need to pass two very difficult exams. I passed on the first attempt, right after finishing law school, which in Brazil takes 5 years. I also completed my postgraduate studies, which took 2 years.
I have a psychologist who works with cognitive-behavioral therapy, and she helps me with techniques to avoid procrastination. I also see a psychiatrist because, here in Brazil, to take Ritalin, you need a prescription from a psychiatrist. Additionally, I don't drink coffee. I used to enjoy beer, but I don't drink alcohol anymore either. It’s not easy, but you need to know what you want in life. I chose not to drink alcohol, not to smoke, not to drink coffee, not to use thermogenics, and not to use anything that could make me more anxious. My doctor prescribed Ritalin for me to take only twice a day before 2 PM.
I also practice sports 5 times a week to burn off energy. As I mentioned, I have the energy of a child, and I believe every ADHD person does. Find a psychologist who works with cognitive-behavioral therapy and see a doctor to prescribe the right medication for you. Regarding spending too much time on the phone and the internet procrastinating, my psychologist taught me some tricks, such as keeping the phone (WhatsApp) on silent and away from the desk. I check my phone only once an hour.
I hope you don’t give up on your dream. It is possible to live a normal life with ADHD because, after all, we are quite intelligent.
      Greetings from Brazil!

I had to go see a neurologist and psychologist for other reasons, ADHD was furthest from my mind. At the time my insurance covered psychologist. When I went to the psychologist he put me through many professional testing. The results were I had severe ADHD. ( not my words, documented it says severe ADHD) this was back 2018. He had me come in on a weekly basis. It changed my life for the better.
I was thriving productive and happier I ever thought I can be. Last year my husband if the 25 years was laid off from his job. Therefore we lost his insurance. Thankfully he found another job but with insurances that does not include psychologist. So for five years I was getting therapy and I was on medication. That suddenly stopped. Because I could not afford $270 for appointment. Even if it was once a month. Try to find alternative ways. Like finding a therapist that would work along with my doctor. The problem I ran into no family physician even with all the records I provided for them, with officially being diagnosed after the proper tests were performed psychologist.
Plus therapy for 5 years. My family physician would not even look at the records. Even with the therapist stating yes she does need her medication she does have ADHD. He flippantly said I don't deal with that, no, don't ask again.
I spiraled into a deep depression. Because before it asking my doctor, I did try for 7 months to go without therapy and medication.
I felt like I took ten steps back I felt out of control and my life was in shambles again. Now I won't even barely leave my house.
I am not able to work. Trying to find a new physician they told me because I'm a new patient they will not deal with medication that has to do with ADHD.
So because I don't have money I am left untreated, & suffering for it.
It's a catch-22 for me to have enough money to go see a psychiatrist I need a job but because I can't get treated for my ADHD I can't work so I can't afford a psychiatrist.
No one talks about this. No one talks about how hard it is to get treated for ADHD. Doctors will not even educate themselves on it. The Discrimination I get is unbearable. I would never tell anyone that I have it.
Media makes it seem so easy to get help all you have to do is ask for it. Yes you can ask for it as long as you have cash in hand.

As I was reading your comment, this made me angry for you and feel sorry for you.. this is really unacceptable, especially for a family physician/primary care doctor that's supposed to be professional and as a person whom believes in professionalism, this is outrageous. Especially you going through it mentally and emotionally. Some healthcare providers won't prescribe medication for ADHD due to some other people that don't need adhd medication and abuse them. But there's alternative medication for ADHD, depending on your health history and what you can take. But the way your doctor spoke to you was unethical and immoral. As a healthcare professional, your supposed to have empathy and compassion for your patients especially as a "family" physician/primary care doctor. I feel for your situation especially as a person with ADHD and a person that's living off of disability funds. It's not easy trust me, I know. I hope all is well now with you and your situation.

I just want to personal and behalf of people with adhd, especially severe adhd, thank you for talking about ADULT adhd. Frankly this is a disorder which presents as unlikable behavior: unreliability, disorganization, talking too much, etc. It causes issues with not just social aspect, but functioning in daily life activities. I don't have references, but I gaurantee that research will confirm that people with untreated and severe adhd end up accrue lots of chronic diseases, lead to higher rates of suicide and crime, and are almost always hopeless and disatisfied with a life that is more like a curse.
Edit: I also wanted to mention that people are so quick to say "but ADHD is being overdiagnosed in teenagers because they want adderall." Even so why should we, people with real problems, have to suffer for the illegal activities that these consumers and their doctors are engaging in? Thorough neuropsych eval, followed by psychiatric medication management should be the standard for getting diagnosed. Unfortunately having more restrictions only makes it harder financially to get diagnosed and treated for people who really need it.
But thank you for doing your part in spreading awareness!

Here are my symptoms. I feel like I can focus if the thing doesn’t really require really any mental effort; I basically have brain fog and like zero mental clarity. The big idea tho is that I CANT THINK at all. My mind basically blanks. This also affects my speech. I have trouble communicating to people (it’s like my brain doesn’t know what to say) and this has hurt my relationship with friends and family. I only have rambling thoughts when I’m trying to fall asleep; sometimes my feet are restless.
I’m constantly fiddling with my hands and hair twirling, but you will never see me tapping my fingers or legs so idk if that still falls under “fidgeting”. I will occasionally shift my body while seated so nothing too noticeable. When waiting in line, I’m constantly re directing my gaze so i don’t appear awkward, is this considered being impatient? have a very poor working memory; I constantly misplace things and can’t recall information. For example, I’ll learn information at school and then maybe like 2 weeks later, I will have completely forgotten the material. I won’t be able to recall anything I just learned which is extremely frustrating. This of course affects my decision making. I can’t problem solve.
I do struggle with a little bit of impulsivity. Instant gratification and procrastination. I turned in a essay 1 week overdue because I couldn’t pull myself to even start it. Thinking of words to type and organizing seems so boring and it takes me much longer than everyone else to complete it like everything else. I struggle with instruction unless there is visual aid. It’s like when they’re trying to explain something, idk what the hell they’re talking about and thus, get lost in their words. I try desperately to understand and I’ll act like I’m following along so I don’t appear like I’m not listening. Could this be some form of processing disorder or is it that I just can’t Concentrate??
I want to be social I really do, but there’s this mental block. I avoid things like presenting in class, participation, expressing opinions, etc.
I am going to see my pediatrician so I will let y’all know what happens. ty 🙏

Yes it sounds like ADHD symptoms, just remember a few things. 1. You're gonna wanna try to see a therapist or psychistrist to get an official diagnosis and proper treatment. 2. You must have had some number of symptoms as a child in order to be diagnosed with ADHD 3. They'll want to ensure that these symptoms aren't being caused by some other illness or maybe depression or anxiety, so try to make sure you don't have overlapping diagnoses. If you do, being able to say you had ADHD symptoms as a child before anything else will help them diagnose you faster, otherwise they might contribute your symptoms to something else.

It means that interest in a task stimulates the reward centre of the brain which produces neurotransmitters required for executive functions that are needed to start on or maintain focus on tasks, it means without the boost in neurotransmitters due to interest, challenge, urgency (NOT importance) or novelty your brain is not able to hit the start button to go do a task, it is not a willful refusal it is not someone being terrible or bad, it is they literally cannot direct their attention in that direction if they don’t have enough of the required neurotransmitters to do so, this is partially why encouragement is a much more effective treatment for children with adhd than punishment, encouragement can increase the enjoyment and interest in a task, it can further be complicated by depression, something people with adhd are prone to, and it further reduces those neurotransmitters so when we get depression we get it *bad* and often function worse than our depressed peers, brains are not all wired the same, if you have an issue somewhere that’s causing blindness because there’s something going wrong in your brain, you aren’t choosing not to see you’re not refusing to see and telling yourself “it will be hard but give it your best shot” changes nothing, it is a disability, a lack of ability, no one with adhd is inherently selfish sitting around only choosing interesting things cause they’re stuck up or entitled, they have a literal disability, a neurological difference that causes them to have less control over how they regulate their attention, it makes it difficult to impossible to focus on boring tasks and let me tell you as someone who was undiagnosed as a child, forcing yourself to focus when you can’t is a quick path to depression anxiety burnout etc, the quality of life deteriorated so badly, we get so burned out and exhausted we might enjoy nothing or just have much worse symptoms, burnout can take 2-6 years to heal in the brain, we aren’t going to intentionally do things to give ourselves burnout because other people want us to, it is self harm, there was a study in the 90s that found the experience of boredom while having adhd was comparable to the effects of sleep deprivation torture, please do not ever treat someone with adhd like they are simply refusing to do something or that they are selfish or encourage them to cope in your suggested way because it can do real harm to a lot of people when the very real disability is ignored and the degree to which people with adhd are mistreated because of this perception means that they are likely to get 20,000 more negative comments than their peers by the age of 8, causing a host of other mental health issues, almost everyone with adhd has or has experienced RSD rejection sensitive dysphoria where they have been so relentlessly rejected and criticized their whole lives that they become so sensitive to it they have a dysphoric reaction to perceived or actual criticism or rejection, I had to grow out of the RSD I had and it only happened after my diagnosis, I hope that awareness and reduction of stigma can change this, I have seen a lot more acceptance since I was a kid, more understanding, but the stigma is still pervasive and adhd itself should not cause the level of other mental illness that it does, the rates of depression anxiety RSD and many others are way too high in people with adhd due to mistreatment from society and often it is worst when they aren’t yet diagnosed and don’t understand

I felt that pattern in my life too to the point the crashing was just too unbearable and sought out help and was diagnosed w severe depression and anxiety, and was given medication right away all of this just last week too. Now tho I’m starting to question whether the cause of my depression and anxiety is because of having untreated/undiagnosed ADHD, next step for me is to get an assessment for that. It’s great that you’re wanting to seek that help for yourself too! I think figuring out the root of what it is we’re going through is so crucial to finding proper treatment. And to simply know the answers to our whys. I wish you the best on your journey of discovery/healing 🙏🏻

I am 44, and was diagnosed at the age of 42. I didn't know anyone with ADHD or even autism when I was a kid in the 80's and 90's. It was there, they were just written off as other things... hyper, lazy, weird, slow, special ed kids, the R word, scatter-brained, bored, troubled, defiant, etc... My Pap-pap was Pennsylvania Dutch (German,) and would say, "She's real book-smart, but she's doppik!" Meaning that I was intelligent but had no common sense. Well, shit, I had ADD/ADHD and no kind of diagnosis or treatment for 36 years... lol. How different could my life have been??? I was in the gifted program from 1st to 12th grade, but was failing algebra, not getting my homework done on time for any class, and way too distracted to pay attention and get good grades. I didn't know how to "apply myself." We didn't have the knowledge and resources back then. My last straw was my failing memory at work and never getting out on time because I was still charting (nursing,) long after my shift ended due to talking too much, or getting lost in my own head when I did try to focus.
Talked to my doctor, she referred me to neuropsych, took a 5 hour evaluation, discovered that I have ADHD (inattentive,) generalized anxiety, depression, and even PTSD. Got hooked up with my amazing psychiatrist, went through CBT, got sober, started meds and continued therapy, and it has been a life saver!
It finally has a reason and a name... and it was not my fault. 💚

In school back in the 1950s and 60s hyper kids were never teacher favorites and they made that obvious. Reports to parents always read "needs to pay attention". I was paying attention to the many interesting things around me like creating perspective views of residential buildings under my desktop. I hated to read except for nonfiction articles. The month of December was always challenging because I would literally bounce up and down most of the time in anticipation of Christmas. Of the hyper kids in my grammar school classes, most became business owners. Interesting.

Get a doctor to prescribe you ritalin. A real one i mean, since reading a health professional say what he told you is at minimum worth losing his licence. Deal woth this fact. 80 to 90% o psychiatrists don't know either what they are treating OR/AND how to treat it. Get your meds. You'll understand why people live the way they do. I really don't think that the meds that allow us to manage ADHD day to day have much of an affect, or maybe not a positive one on managing relationships. Like, I can take a vyvanse and knock out 6 hours of work without a break but how does that help my girlfriend not feel neglected that I just did 4 days of work in 6 hours and completely ignored her texts? And then the stims mess with your sexual relationships so that goes down the drain. I never take stims when I'm in a serious relationship it's like the one time I know I really need to focus on being attentive to someone. Taking a stim AND being with the girlfriend at the same time is not a good idea.. I used to have to choke down a blunt after work before my gf came over if I took a stim that day. Way too wound up. Stims to me are just how I stay employed..

My brother is 61, and has shown signs of this for many years. He is unable to sit still if his life depended on it.
The only additional thing missing in his case not mentioned here is he also shows signs of being a narcissist.
He will blame different life situations/happenings on others. He seems to find it hard to admit he makes mistakes. It's never anything he has done, it's because of something someone else did to him.
When you point out something in his life (that might be a better way of thinking) he is quick to point the finger back at you, without stopping to contemplate what you may be trying to show him.
I don't think he has many friends, because when you think that way and it's combined with maybe other ailments, you chase people away.
He also at times elevates himself with a hint of superiority that can be a turn off.
After an hour (tops), I'm ready to get away from his presence. We don't live in the same state which I'm thinking is a good thing. Had to get this off my chest.
    Many thanks.

Like to a WIERD degree. Kinda freaked me out. I cant put into words how stressful it really is. Especially if you live alone. Many people go undiagnosed because they either dont have it that bad, they find a way to cope, or they marry a very organized person that helps them cope. I cant tell you how infuriating it is to be able to explain Einstein's theory of general relativity but I lost 8 of my fucking lighters this month. For the tech folks its like your brain having a high end processor and graphics card with only 100mb of RAM. Its so fucking hard in professional settings because its just viewed as incompetence. You can tell he glossed some descriptions of what ADHD is. He said a lot of correct terms while being off on a whole lot.
Hyperactive and inattentive all have similar issues. The main difference is some is distracted externally and one is distracted internally. Instead of getting up and wandering the room, an inattentive will wander about in their mind.
Also, there isn't an explosion in the cases of adult onset ADHD. These are all people who've had it their whole life and are just now getting diagnosed. What his report left out is that just 20 years ago, diagnosticians would never diagnose an adult simply because they all though only kids had ADHD and they grew out of it. Similar with girls. Many diagnosticians simply wouldn't diagnose a girl because she was a girl. Many used to think it mainly affected boys. A lot of that comes from the fact that boys tend to have the hyperactive form a lot more than girls.
Also, they sure as heck tried to make it sound like something that was curable. It isn't. Ya, there are medications that make ADHD more manageable, but it doesn't cure it. It's not a mental problem or some disorder. It's different way for a brain to work. It's now thought that somewhere in the range of 6% of all people on the planet have ADHD. That's a whole lot of people whose brains work differently than other people's brains.
They make it sound bad, like ADHD people can't be good parents or are failures. Notice his use of the wording more functional when referring to the medication. That's big business speak for better employee. ADHD people may not be good with schedules, tardiness, or remembering a list of tasks. They are great at being creative, thinking outside the box, and troubleshooting. Not a lot of call for that at your local Wendy's or as a news anchor. Guess that's why they like to run stories about poor ADHD people being normalized back into society.

@@sincerelyzee521 thanks for your opinion. I haven't had a doctor give me an actual assessment for adhd.

Dr Wolfe here. You do NOT have ADHD, it is a made up disorder by the pharmaceutical companies and the government to control and drug you

@@aleadiann if they don't take the time to do an evaluation they're not doing their job, i'd just find a different psyc doctor, explain your situation and ask to be refered for a neuropsyc evaluation. If you feel like they're not taking you seriously then ask them to put that in your chart, or move on to a different doctor. There are other things that can look like ADHD so it takes a professional to figure it out but you have to be willing to advocate for yourself and go through the process.

Well people aren't really getting ADHD more often it's just that 1, we know more about it than we ever have so diagnoses go up. 2, the world we live in is demanding more and more mental focus just to be productive as technology and science continue to advance.

I diagnosed myself with adhd.. Attention defificit hyperactivity disorder... The only symptoms I have are trouble paying attention or focusing on a task... For example, if I read a book or watch a movie, I have trouble understanding the plot, storyline... Also, I'm bad with direction and maps and socializing with my peers... I also struggled in school throughout my life and always tested lower than my classmates due to trouble focusing... Besides that, I'm great with organizing, cleaning, completing a task... Im also not lazy, not depress because I can keep myself busy... The people who are diagnosed with adhd and claim they can't organize shit or complete something are just lazy ass indoviduals... Ya probably understand the plot of a movie and tested average or above average in school.. Stop making excuses... ADHD stands for attention deficit disorder.. Not laziness..

My parter is 61 and not restless. But he is impulsive and has angry outbursts.
Overly sensitive-gets feelings hurt easily. Loses track of time.
Lacks organizational skills. What I want to know is
Can a 61 yr old male learn to control his angry outbursts?
