The fan is a bit loud at low speeds, but it's doing a lot of work, it's cooling the turbo, the intercooler, radiator, the etorque battery pack, AC, etc. Having driven one for a few days in 100+ TX heat it never let the coolant levels go above 200F. I wanted to hate the engine because my initial reaction was that the whole system is a bit overdesigned, but it kind of won me over for the period that I had it. The Touareg did just fine, it got to the top of the mountain just fine. The moment where it touched borrow slightly and tapped the tree with the minor are not problems, the Touareg is a bigger vehicle so that will happen to all bigger vehicles, the Jeep ran a better line (if u look at the video you can see that the Jeep received better directions from the navigator than the Touareg received, so the Touareg was aligned poorly to go over that rock). We can also see that the Touareg has a much more comfortable ride, which is important because the Jeep has a severely kidney busting ride that just beats up your body as you get older). The Touareg also has plastic parts that can be superglued or replaced, so that is the same as the Jeep, but of course VW prices might be higher but if it is then you can simply pick up your plastic at a junkyard since this is an off-road vehicle, it does not matter if the colors don't match and it doesn't matter if it is scraped up either, off road vehicles should look like they go off-road every day.

11:40 Tommy, you're exactly right. Despite the reduced articulation of an independent suspension compared to a straight-axle suspension, the independent suspension overall will be more comfortable. This matches my experience riding/driving in military vehicles, trucks, SUV's, and crossovers. For folks who no longer or do not have the physical and mental endurance of withstanding the pronounced side-to-side sway of straight-axle suspensions, lifting wheels at rough obstacles is a reasonable sacrifice of articulation assuming the vehicle has BLD-effect of traction control and/or lockers for that comfort of fully-independent suspension.

Just the fact the the VW kept up with the wrangler, up AND down the hill is impressive. It wasn’t even designed for this type of off-roading, yet you too bashed it the entire video! Your bias towards Jeep reeks terribly.
Wow! Very impressive. No sweat for the Rubicon, but hey that Touareg did a darn good job. For what it (Touareg) is - basically a car, it did a great job.
Thanks guys for your videos. Your conversations, narration, cars, music, sceneries - are just great. You show not only cars which I love but some nice pieces of US :ok:
I don't know how I missed this video, but it's amazing! As always, great work guys. This trail looks epic too, once again it just makes me really want to get out to CO to see y'all with my 4Runner.
Really, you think the touareg is as capable as the jeep? The jeep has a front locker (not the VW), and a disconnecting front sway bar(not the VW). I love the VW, but a Rubicon it is not.
I have a 2005 VW Touareg with locking center and read diff plus a 1999 LR Discovery 1 with locking center diff and EATON True Trac front and rear, so I loved this video... thanks for making it!
The VW has a disconnecting front sway bar, so its fine that the Jeep used it. But really, the Jeep would have done this whole trail with its lockers off. There was no reason to use them.
@@Stuka87 i don't think so. In some areas it would have needed the lockers, wishful thinking. Bottom line on this video is the Jeep has better lines than the VW and that's what made the biggest difference.
Love Red Cone, such a great trail! I love how Roman said he was impressed by the Jeep...Why? That's what it was supposed to do. I am not a VW guy and I was impressed by the large Beetle.
Love This T-Reg Series, Makes me want to get my 09 TDI up in the mountains soon, I just got it ;) You guys rock! Thanks for all these vids! Tommy your awesome, enjoy your presentation and enthusiasm!
Guys, love these videos and glad to be done with all my work travel....Can finally start watching these regularly again🤘 cant wait to hit the trails with you all. Roman said it right, a cheap offroader with the right parts is how you keep up with 40k plus rigs😉 The old explorer is getting retired and a 2003 seqouia will be the new beater, cant wait to see its capability and build it up.
I think the VW did very well and is still very impressive... In many spots Tommy just had a better line than his Dad not that the Jeep was all that better. I don't know about you guys but that VW is frickin impressive 👍
Clearance and dynamic clearance are 2 different pairs of shoes. The first is measured standing still ... the second appears under the dynamic pressure of a stone on a single wheel getting on / off that rock. The mirror's plastic "housing" of the touareg is here 67€ incl. 19% VAT or 78$ deliverabke in 48 hours ... but makes no sense if glue can fix it ... cause otherwise you need a paint job done.
I have 2006 touareg 4.2 lifted, dual k&n intake filtration non air suspension , bilstein performance struts, 275 65 18 cooper discoverer II. luxury 4x4 with Porsche brakes and suspension , audi v8 , Volkswagen owned all 3 companies at the time no comparison. Handling of a sports car, offroad capability of top line 4x4, comfort of a fine luxury vehicle, incredible sound system, dual climate control. Needs armor to complete.
The only experience I've had with Jeep was a Pink Jeep tour in Sedona, AZ. Those things can go anywhere and are truly amazing so it is pretty impressive the VW did as well as it did.
14:27 Sorry guys, wrong conclusion. The weight is NOT the issue. The front locker is the issue. In a vehicle with limited articulation, the importance of lockers is amplified as wheels lift and loose traction immediately. With a front locker, the touregg would crawl up all these things just as easily as the ruby, lifting wheels the whole way and not caring. The issue with IFS/IRS, is that the threshold where a locker is required kicks in much earlier, but once the locker is engaged, it can go anywhere a rig with a lot of articulation can go as long as the driver has the balls to do huge wheel stands. If you want proof... I'll take you for a ride in my H3 (5000lbs empty as configured, 6000lbs GVWR and close to that with passengers/gear). It has front/rear lockers, skids/sliders, and follows lifted jeeps that weigh less up trails rated 6-8/10 no problem, just does way bigger wheel stands with limited front articulation (IFS).
Awesome video Roman and Tommy thanks guys! Also those guys behind the scenes great job everyone! It was incredible to watch the VW in action following the rubicon...is the rubicon completely stock? I think this is what I’d like to get when it’s time to upgrade my TJ.

Great video. Might be doing that trail next weekend. And congrats on your first trail damage - tree rash. My first damage was being hit by 2 different cars in two days. Miraculously, no one was hurt and I was the least for wear both times. Still think you should give more points on the ORI scale for vehicles with lockers. 10 points per is good.
I had a 2007 Touareg V10 TDI and as far as performance and how much of a tank it felt like, I was never disappointed. I have a few videos of it on my channel. Only took it off road twice and it felt invincible.
Great trail for a 4x4 test! If you need a tie breaker though going back up the one way section is a fun time... Of coarse you need friends on both ends to keep it clear safe. Keep up the fun and diverse content!
I would love to see y’all do a mash up with a 08-12 Trail Rated Jeep Liberty vs the VW and even a Wrangler or Trailhawk anything. I have a 2010 Jeep Liberty Renegade and I haven’t done a whole lot with it and there wasn’t that much love for them.
Roman "I'm gonna hit a tree" Mica finally hits a tree! I still think a cool series would be to buy old suvs every 90 days and showcase their abilities. It could go on the classics or off road Channel. Great job on this video! An off road review that really goes off road! And I think the VW did great!
47 willys, no disconnects, 17.5 tires on split rims, I just don't how we 4 wheeled all these years without all the tech, hoooott, thanks guys for makin fun of VW
Great video, love the parts where Tommy is spotting over the radio but it sound like an event announcer, it’s as if the Touareg is a circus animal and Tommy is announcing it’s moves!🤣
As long as you're careful, you can keep the VW from eating parts. The part where he was worried about hitting the tree, also shows a huge weak point in independent suspension on larger off-road obstacles. Where the Wrangler came in and zipped right through with its wheels cranked hard to the right, the Touareg could have been in trouble. Having the steering hard over at lots of compression or droop and bashing against rocks is a very good way to mangle CV joints. Isuzu Trooper guys know all about that on the front ends of those SUVs. They're great and you can get lockers and fit big tires without issue, but when you start throwing them with their great articulation, at big rocks, they eat CV joints. Not really a fault of the vehicle, it's just that CV joints aren't really made for that kind of punishment. As long as you don't beat on them too much, they usually hold up.
The T-rag is awesome!!! Front locker and sum skid plates, custom winch bumper??? Would add to the girth but would make that thing almost unstoppable!!! Love the series!Jeeps the way to go for dedicated 4x4 but that T-rag will go 90% of the way in comfort!!
Beautiful scenery. I will have to make a visit to CO and drive this trail. You should test more vehicles on this trail. Looks a little more challenging that the others you drive.
Double check your build sheet there guys (Tommy commented that the Rubicon has 410 gears) not sure about the new JL's but in the JK's the 410's were only standard in the Manual transmission The automatics were 373's even in the Rubicon unless you special ordered it with 410's! Nice little bait-n-switch from FCA I only recently figured out... Also I've really been enjoying these Touareg off-road videos!
Any aftermarket skid plates are very expensive. You are looking at 1k. A company in Israel, a guy in Australia I think still makes them. Of course there used to be German aftermarket companies, but I don't think they have anything left. I have seen a company from the UK that still sells them.
The Touareg dominated price wise age wise fuel efficiency-wise versatility wise probably reliability wise over the course of maybe three more years. Currently if I'm wrong but it got everywhere that Jeep got correct? I have one question where exactly did it fail next to the Jeep? Yeah I'm a VW guy I'm a VW diesel guy. But I get it you got so much invested in that Jeep so it's hard not to cheer for it and expect to make it the winter right I get it. But in all practicality and reason and money not growing on trees the Touareg dominated hands down! Great video I love to seeing somebody compare the two VW needs giving some proper respect and it looks like some people are going to save a lot of money and make the right choice the first time with your off-road ventures! I hate VW and the whole diesel gate thing, but I am envious of that Touareg. It is truly a majestic beast.
Just the fact the the VW kept up with the wrangler, up AND down the hill is impressive. It wasn’t even designed for this type of off-roading, yet you too bashed it the entire video! Your bias towards Jeep reeks terribly.
Awesome video! Thank you again Roman and Tommy. You went above and beyond!
The main issue with the Touareg was the anxiety of the driver. The car looked like it handled it no problem...
Awesome video, guys! We need more like this! I'd like to take my JLUR on this trail; the scenery is spectacular! 😎
I was thinking about getting an older VW.
Not bad for a vehicle not purpose built for this stuff. The Jeep did as expected.
Really, you think the touareg is as capable as the jeep? The jeep has a front locker (not the VW), and a disconnecting front sway bar(not the VW). I love the VW, but a Rubicon it is not.
@@richfarfugnuven6308 Both were an option on the tuareg, only this one does not have them. The only thing it does not have is skid plates.
@@nielsdebakker3283 I dont know if you noticed, but people were talking about THIS video and ThIS Touareg
I have a 2005 VW Touareg with locking center and read diff plus a 1999 LR Discovery 1 with locking center diff and EATON True Trac front and rear, so I loved this video... thanks for making it!
That Touareg would make a great overland build. Throw a rooftop tent, full size spare and armor and lets go!!!
Unlock the front lockers from the Jeep and do it again and see how it does and keep the sway bar connected that would make it more fair
The VW has a disconnecting front sway bar, so its fine that the Jeep used it. But really, the Jeep would have done this whole trail with its lockers off. There was no reason to use them.
@@Stuka87 The disconnecting front sway bar (and front locker) was an option this particulare Touareg does not have
@@Stuka87 i don't think so. In some areas it would have needed the lockers, wishful thinking. Bottom line on this video is the Jeep has better lines than the VW and that's what made the biggest difference.
???? This video wasn’t trying to make it fair? The title is literally old vs new. No shit they used the front lockers and disc. Sway bar.
@@jarredl990 the take away i got was the VW was ahead of its time and a very capable but underrated vehicle.
I'm very impressed with the amount of love and praise for the much mis understood Toureg
What a fantastic well designed vehicle they were
Outstanding video fellas! Thanks for showing the off-road chops VW baked into the Touareg with this series!!
Oh yeah. That's what you guys are, and should be all about! It's like a review but with adventure. I'm already awaiting the next one!!
Love Red Cone, such a great trail! I love how Roman said he was impressed by the Jeep...Why? That's what it was supposed to do. I am not a VW guy and I was impressed by the large Beetle.
Wow... I didn't see this comparison coming !!! Excellent job guys !!! A+
Nice drone footage at the top of the mountain. The Jeep is insanely capable, still blows my mind.
Your editing is becoming next level. Love the intro. Great vid!
Roman said it right, a cheap offroader with the right parts is how you keep up with 40k plus rigs😉
The old explorer is getting retired and a 2003 seqouia will be the new beater, cant wait to see its capability and build it up.
Love that you guys can come down the famous red cone decent WHILE narrating the video. That's very impressive.
What an awesome location!! Great video again, guys!
Now that’s German engineering lol
Truly,..a butt clenching ride,..super video!
Thanks TFC,...Roman, Tommy and the 'un-named' camera crew!
Holy smokes! Tfl!! This video was really incredible, that red cone trail is ubsurd going down! I certainly wish I had a jeep or some sort and was in Colorado to check this out, wow!!!! So beautiful!!! So darrnn steeep!! One of my new fav Tfl videos of all time!
If you ever visit CO, you can rent a Jeep at the airport with Avis. You can rent a Nissan Frontier as well.
That Touareg is one capable car!!! Nice video!
Best video in a long time. Well done. Thank you.
The Touareg Love continues
Great trail for a 4x4 test! If you need a tie breaker though going back up the one way section is a fun time... Of coarse you need friends on both ends to keep it clear safe.
Keep up the fun and diverse content!
Spray your paint with a teflon based silicone before offroading and you will get much less pinstriping....just an FYI Roman.
Thanks for the heads-up!
Great father and son team work
This video had me watching the whole way through. Quite entertaining.
superb video guys!! that touareg did amazing!
17:00 Taking clearance guidance from 'Tesla Tommy' is maybe not the best idea 😂
Nicely done. And kudos to the Touareg!
Great video, love the parts where Tommy is spotting over the radio but it sound like an event announcer, it’s as if the Touareg is a circus animal and Tommy is announcing it’s moves!🤣
You now have a Volkswagen Tree-areg. ;O)
driver error
Great video guys! Nice work.
Oh this is great. I want to try Red Cone in the Cherokee soon.
This is one of the greatest, scariest trails in the world.
The fan on my 2019 Cherokee is super loud when off road for an extended period of driving slow. Guess it's a feature.
Wow... my palms were sweating! That looked like fun!!!
Just bought my 09 Touareg VR6 FSI today. Hope it's as capable as y'all's is on the trails.
These videos are great!! I fell in love with this Touareg!! But then again I’m all for anything but a Jeep
Your best series ever easily. Love the Touareg. Thanks for awesome videos.
Does anyone make aftermarket skid plates for the VW?
Any aftermarket skid plates are very expensive. You are looking at 1k. A company in Israel, a guy in Australia I think still makes them. Of course there used to be German aftermarket companies, but I don't think they have anything left. I have seen a company from the UK that still sells them.
Rich Farfugnuven yes
Yes Club Touareg offers a full front under carriage skid plate about $450. #ASFIR. #589056
@@snwboard13 That is without shipping from Israel (you don't even want to know what it cost) and I don't think that is a full skid plate.
Also found a nice one from Australia that is under $600 shipped to the US
The Touareg dominated price wise age wise fuel efficiency-wise versatility wise probably reliability wise over the course of maybe three more years. Good work guys really great video
