I have a second gen cayenne but really like the first gen Touareg with the tdi and cayenne both with low range. A little more aftermarket for the first gen as well like high clearance bumpers.
Using the concrete obstacle hill is a great idea for comparisons because like you said, it doesn’t get worn down and change! Another great video Jon, lots of fun thanks for sharing.
Yeah, in the video description I mentioned TFL and Driving Sports TV, since they both bought land to run their offroad tests. I read think they should make a cement hill like this.
Awesome video as always! Feels like I'm in offroading school when I watched your comparison videos, loved it very informative. Can't believe that's almost a year ago when I finally met you IN-PERSON lol. We should do something like this in the future Thanks for the featured and being a youtube big brother lol.
If you ever do, let me know when you go and I’ll meet up with you. I’d be honored to capture to moment. One thing I really liked to see how the Outlander was able to restart mid hill and try again. That’s so important when out overlanding and adventuring, because it means you can get yourself out of a tough situation.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring will do! Though being out on the east coast, that'll take some time haha. And yea, I was really impressed by that, especially with a cvt. Definitely makes me more comfortable with the types of places I'm planning on going.
I want to thank you for doing all your Videos and also thanks to those in the comments section that always have positive things to say. Decided to buy a Honda Ridgeline 2022
My first exposure to off-roading was near Bryce Canyon during winter with the family. Was in high school at the time, so wasn’t the one at the wheel, and we had the first gen Touareg V8 AWD. We thought it was capable enough but we got stuck in the snow in standard all terrains. My dad and I had to trek about a mile and a half to a nearby house where the owners were so kind that basically the whole family came out in snow mobiles and hitched us a ride back to help tow us out. Interesting but cool experience, no pun intended.
Thanks for sharing! Any vehicle will get stuck once it high centers in snow and the tires get buried. A few videos back, my friends lifted Nissan Xterra sunk in 2 feet of snow. The recovery was exhausting (and cold). Then I slept in frosty 10F weather with numb feet (because snow got into my boots. It sucked 🤣.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I feel you, I was wearing basketball shoes and jeans through this whole thing 😂 we had finished up our trip in Utah and were headed for Vegas before we decided to take this detour lol
Only thing your missing is some Go Fast stripes Jon. Dude on a Serious note @JonDzAdventure thanks for all the work you do finding these locations & being able to heard all the cats to put these videos together. Thanks for all you do. ps Food Brake??? Are we on the Hobbit diet?
Love your videos Jon! Very informative and the educational value on vehicle specs and rear-world application is awesome. I have a 2020 TRD OR 4x4 Tacoma that I've only wheeled once at Kavanaugh Ridge with some SoCal Friends. Would like to tag along if you guys ever make it up here. Keep up the awesome videos!
Thanks for the kind words BisdakYoda 🙏. We’ve been to Kavanaugh Ridge, we actually travel up the 395 quite frequently. We have a Facebook group if you wanted to meet up. There’s quite a few from Norcal too!
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Thanks for the invite! I'll look you up on FB. I'll be driving down to Texas to get my rock sliders, skid plates and KC lightbar installed this first week of March (I live in Texas but work here in San Jose)
Yeah. The gen 1 touareg was mine. Double checked with the damaged chrome trim damage on the drive door and the reg plate. LoL. Glad to see it climb. I hope the drive/buyer 'remain unchanged' LOL.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring ops turned out it’s a different hill. It looked similar. Heres the video i was talking about. th-cam.com/video/QA1MP1-T5ws/w-d-xo.html

Even the Volkswagen Touareg in 4 Lo with, center diff locked and rear differential locked, still spun out a little at 10:01. Everyone was aired down here, this test is much more demanding and technical compared to Sarah’s test hill. With the right preparation, the right driver, and a bit of bravery, the Outback wilderness might make it. We just won’t know until someone tries it.
They’re proven. They’ve been taken to Moab and alot of other 4WD trails. My Honda actually shares the same transmission with 2018 and Earlier Trailhawk Renegage. We have a 20.4:1 crawl ratio. 2019 renegade Trailhawks are geared a slightly more aggressive 21.3:1. Jeep crossovers have hands down the best traction control system out of all the AWDs. People actually do beginner rock crawling with them, so to answer your question. Yeah, it’s a good choice.
Any remedy options for the SJ FXT crawl ratio? The new wilderness edition Subarus use a CVT with improved crawl ratio, is there any way to update/convert? (Mechanically ignorant question)
That’s a good question, i many people have chimed in about this in the forums, but it doesn’t look like there’s an easy way. There’s just too much electronics involved. The SJ FXTs already have pretty aggressive 4.11:1 differential gears. 4.44:1 being the most aggressive available to Subarus. 14.3:1 in the FXT is pretty close to the Outback Wilderness 15.5:1.
I own two Touaregs, an 06 and a 13. I can confirm that they're both unstoppable lol.

ROCK on VW
Always loved gen1 touareg. When tfl had to tow a broken ram down a mountain with one it was hilarious.
TFL made the Touareg famous!

There’s a guy who drove his outback wilderness there with no problem, nice and slow. It’s on TH-cam. Was posted this month

The 2nd gen Touareg - does is that on standard AWD only? Or running on the Terrain tech 4WD?
