Rehabilitating The Victims Of The Illegal Orangutan Trade

  • The Baby Trade: Wild orangutans are expected to face extinction within 50 years. Despite this, the multi-million dollar poaching industry thrives as baby orangutans are captured and smuggled from their rain-forest homes.

“Every time she hopped on a tree we’d cut that tree down. We’d catch the mother in a net and either hit her or shoot her. Once she was dying we’d take the baby”, says an ex-smuggler, describing the brutal capture of a baby orangutan. Intelligent yet relatively passive primates, orangutans are desirable pets, as they can be taught tricks and dressed up. Most are trafficked from the rainforests of Indonesia to Thailand, where they are sold for thousands of dollars. Edwin Wiek runs rescue facilities for these stolen animals, but with little government support he faces significant challenges; “the illegal wildlife trade is very lucrative, a lot of people make lots of money including some politicians or government officials in some cases". For the rescued orangutans, rehabilitation and re-release into the wild is a complex process. Oki, newly released after 15 years in captivity, struggled to adjust to life in the wild according to veterinarian Rian Winardi. “The release didn’t go according to plan. We hoped he wouldn’t turn around and look at people. But he did. He’s an ex-rehab orangutan after all.”

They definitely have an unpredictable violent side though. I think the fact their dangerous side is almost universally downplayed makes the orangutan trade worse. Even the babies are more than most people can handle when they flip out. It scares their rich human owners and the animal is removed from the house. It’s rare that the removal results in a great outcome.

So let me get this European hypocrite right? He barges into a country in which he is clearly a foreigner, but most likely uses his European wealth to buy land and gain influence. He then takes it upon himself to go into peoples private homes and " rescue" these apes saying they dont belong as pets, they should be in the wild..it dosent look like anyone local is interested in his version of morality. He takes these animals out of other people's homes so they aren't Kept as pets, to bring them to his " santuary" which has cages, feedings, playtime, etc he can obviously have them as pets right? He takes from private citizens wagging his finger that your wrong , yet he can have as many of them as pets that he wants? Total hypocrite. Id revoke his passport and deport him back to Europe.

They actually burn down the trees more often than they cut them down. It’s not uncommon for a trapped mother and baby to catch fire in the process. It’s pretty awful to see.

You can volunteer or donate to organizations like Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) and International Animal Rescues (IAR). Personally, stop using Palm oil products and tell your kin to do so to. Palm plantation is the number 1 reason for decreasing habitat, which makes it easier for poachers to steal the babies. Palm oil is unhealthy and used widely in processed food.

I just can't phathom the mind of a living human being that could do something to any animal, especially such a closely related primate to us humans, like this poacher is describing in such great detail. How could you even sleep at night? I am crying just sitting here thinking about how someone could take the life of anything, a mother, such as these, rip their babies from their arms as they are dying, and kidnap, torture and ultimately sell or use for profit, I'm some way.
I just will never understand, no matter how hard I try, no matter how many of these videos of rescues I watch. I just can't imagine the type of person it would take to do something like this. I wish someone could help me understand, just how, any human being, could be this cruel and INHUMAN.

This angers me so much. These defenseless beautiful animals have no say in what happens to them. The criminals and the people who support the trade of wild animal's should be punished. How would the criminals feel if someone came and killed one of there ones in retaliation they would want justice. But these animals don't get justice. With the caparision to drug trade, its not the same it worse because people once again choose to take drugs choose to deal with criminals. But these animals are just living their lives in their natural habitat and a human comes and kills the mother to get the babies. There sicko's. I hope to god that one of the the mother animals rip each and every poacher apart. And that God protects each and every one of the people who are trying to make a difference and save them.

Unfortunately the older we get the more we realize or SHOULD realize that at the end of the day even if it starts with goid intentions, there is going to be a business side to it and yes I realize they need to make money to keep the train rollin but it ALWAYS srarts going above and beyond just leveling off and profit creeps in and honestly its almost ALWAYS about that out of the gate anyway!?!?

I wonder why rehabilitated orangutans have to go back to Sumatra or Borio because that is the only places that they still live wild. There are many rain forest with many fruiting trees that are not Borneo or Sumatra, why can’t they be instigated into those Forest areas? I mean why do orangutans have to only be in Borneo and Sumatra why can’t they be in other places in the world where they can exist as they would in Borneo or Sumatra. Places that would be much safer, places where they’re less likely to be shot, Or killed to be eaten or their babies to be sold. I just don’t understand why orangutans can exist in other places?

I hate to say it, but I really think that the only way to get the message across, are the stiffest sentences possible, for anyone caught owning any primate and, worse for those that capture or kill them. Even the pet owners need jail time, to take it seriously. And, they shouldn't be allowed to use their wealth or positions to get out of it. That's the only time you'll get REAL change. Hopefully, we'll do it, before it's too late.

Illegal trade in orangutans requires the death penalty. For the murder of orangutans and for ill-treatment, the death penalty is also needed. This is the only way to stop human cruelty. To do this, the government must adopt such a law.

So what happens if the orangutan goes extinct? I don't get why people are so willing to spend all this money and effort to save orangutans when there's plenty of humans that could use saving.

Why watch a video about the plight of an animal if you do not care for its survival?

@@DonnaRupinski I'd just rather fix humans than Orangutans, wouldn't you? There's plenty of human suffering in the world, let's take care of our own first. Why bother with a species that's basically extinct anyway. What will the world lose if there's no more orangutans? I guess you won't have any cute videos to watch to make you feel better about yourself, that's one reason no? When you've seen as much human suffering as I have it makes you angry that people care more for some animal than other humans.

@@mosipd my sister died from cancer last week so spare me the lecture on how I'd rather save animals than humans.
These animals aren't going extinct because of their own doing. It's completely the fault of humans. So, yes, we should fix what we've done. This world isn't made up of just humans. Quite frankly it's the greed of people like you putting themselves, as humans, above all else, that has wreaked havoc on the world. Only 2% of animal life is in the wild. The rest is domestic. Used to feed humans. Humanity has wiped out 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970 and it'ss now an emergency that threatens civilisation. Because we do depend upon these creatures whether you recognize that fact or not. The orangutans help maintain the ecosystem of these forests through their fruit eating and seed dispersal.
These rainforests are called the lungs of the planet for their role in absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and increasing local humidity. They also stabilize climate, contain enormous amounts of plants and wildlife, and produce nourishing rainfall all around the planet. Who knows how many life saving attributes the fauna in rainforests contain. So saving these animals plays a huge role in saving the world and the humans inhabiting it.

  • @JAM-yj4tb

It's easy for us in western countries to judge but hunting orangutans for their meat is not even close go the same as killing a human. Humans are predators and these people living in the jungle need their meat to feed their children. Chimps hunt smaller primates too. Selling the babies is one of the only economic resources they have. If the owners can afford to care for them properly I don't see the problem in keeping them as pets. They could have a better life as a pet than in those small, crowded cages at the rescue center. Better than going extinct.
