  • I distinctly recall attempting this song a year or two ago and giving up because my right hand wasn't fast enough to play the ride cymbal part at 0:22 or so. Finally managed it!
    Polyphia's swinging by Singapore in a bit over a day, so here's a tribute cover in preparation for the show. There's a long story behind the filming of this one - basically, about everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong every time I had a good take, and I really wanted to get it in one shot. Song was interrupted by a phone call, camera died, didn't record the kick track, so on... so this isn't a perfect one, it was late and I was tired and stressing over getting it done in time, but I'm proud of it nonetheless. Cover #11 for 2018! Will we make it to 12...?

      @@stalj You're welcome! On a side note: what's the size/make of your snare? I can't tell from the angle, and I'm looking for yet another reason to downsize from a standard 14-inch.

    AWESOME!
    this song is still hard for me :(
    any advice~?

    • @stalj
      @stalj  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep at it, it's a tough one! Which part are you struggling with? It helps to figure out the underlying issue and then work on that concept separately for a while first. For me it was the right hand ride notes at 0:25 - hand just wasn't fast enough. So I practiced that on its own and came up with different grooves using that right hand pattern for a while, got it up to speed and then came back to the song later! That helped a lot since I could focus on learning the parts and not struggle with technical limitations.

    • @s17how11
      @s17how11 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stalj
      I think im struggling with lots . I can't even doing well at the first Upbeat(not sure the name in englisch) with ghost. Maybe my tab from my teacher is too hard for me.
      I found lots of difference between my tab and your vid. Maybe I need to add some 8 beats within. I don't know.

    • @stalj
      @stalj  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@s17how11 yeah upbeat is correct! The upbeat intro part with open hi-hats? You could try that with a simpler drumbeat first until you perfect the hi-hat pattern and then add ghost notes one or a few at a time. Tabs may or may not be accurate, I prefer to trust my ears 😁

    Do you know any ear training methods?

    • @stalj
      @stalj  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean? For learning songs by ear?

    • @JordanFavazzaView
      @JordanFavazzaView 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes

    • @stalj
      @stalj  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically you need to have all the necessary vocabulary first before you try playing something by ear, else you'll just end up simplifying everything. So make sure you practice all your various subdivision grids, slow down tracks and really pay attention to detail and work out those parts (train your ear to hear the different frequencies of the kit), try playing simpler songs or grooves by ear - once you're working on all that, it'll gradually get easier to play more complicated songs by ear.
