    Depression isn't just a feeling, something that turns on and off. It's an actual mental disease, and quite different from sadness or grief/bereavement. We all feel sad sometimes, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we're actually experiencing depression.

    • @muzerhythm2242

      This is one of the many reasons why I want to do mental health awareness. Too often in everyday language people say they have depression and when it actually is sadness...not an illness from chemical imbalances. The MAIN reason I want to do talks is to dissolve stigma. There has been way too much shame in seeking help..either with counseling or seeing a doctor.

      @@muzerhythm2242 As someone studying psychology, I think there should be a dichotomy in what we refer to as depression. One that refers to the physical impairment of the psyche, and then another thats more of a nuance and debilitating aura of sadness and negativity that is prolonged for an indefinite amount of time.
      This is perhaps what some people are talking about and should be valid to call it depression. It's much more powerful than what we refer to as being sad, because it can form a never ending loop, that one can't consciously break out of. It can last, days, weeks, months and even years.
      There may not be an actual chemical imbalances in ones brain, merely one's thought pattens, but to dismiss these prolonged feelings and label it as just sadness, I feel undermines the real effect it can have on someones life.

      Actually it does turn on and off but not at the time you want it too. And it's also important for people to recognize that being sad for a lasting amount of time, isn't just sadness.

    Thank you!!! You're awesome. Having depression as a student is really difficult. You do have to seek ways to remain productive, but also remember that it is important to ask for help in your community. Many of my peers and teachers know I am clinically depressed and they do their best to help me. Although it doesnt immediately remove me from the depressed state, it helps me cope:)

    • @leehaeri201050
      @leehaeri201050 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also please visit a psychiatrist/clinical psychologist if you can!! It helps a lot to have a formal diagnosis, not only for practical purposes but also for your emotional well being. With a diagnosis, I found that I tended to blame less of the flaws in my character, but found comfort (in a way) by attributing the difficulties that I was having in my depression.

  • @Nofxthepirate

    For me, self acceptance was the key to staying productive. I would be so worried I'd do an assignment wrong or screw up a minor detail and get an F that I wouldn't even look at assignments till it was almost too late to complete them. On top of that I would be too afraid to go talk to my professors because I was sure they'd think my questions were stupid. It took 2 years of college and good grades for me to finally start relaxing and trusting myself, and its still a daily struggle.

    omg finally someone with the depression that i have. because in some other videos they are like go for a walk and do exercises, divide up the tasks etc, but the point is everything is pointless and nothing is important when i am depressed (all the time)

    why am i crying listening to this. thank you, from the deepest of my heart. i'll try to do those things, especially your take on just staring in the document on the first pomodoro session. it gives a new perspective for me cause even though i know it's a short session, sometimes thinking of sitting and can't do anything done is pointless and i just end up not doing it. now, i'll try to start anyway.

  • @ZephWraen
    @ZephWraen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    This is such fantastic advice.
    One thing that helps me get in motion when I'm having an episode and don't want to do anything is going for a walk. It might take yourself some convincing if it's an especially bad episode, but if you can, throw on some clothes and just go for a walk. Try to make it a brisk one, the goal is to get your heart rate up a bit. Once you get your blood pumping it'll be easier to convince yourself to actually do a workout. The workout might suck compared to your normal fair, but the hormones released by doing something high intensity can help relieve physical Depression symptoms and can help distract your brain, especially if you listen to some more intense music during the workout. So if you can't convince yourself to workout, try to at least talk yourself into a walk. Any little bit can help.

    This was honestly some of the best advice for getting through really low points that I have ever seen. Too much advice is goal oriented: get a therapist, start planning, exercise, etc -- all things that reap benefits mostly in the future. The reframing of "well doing this doesn't matter" to "well if if doing it doesn't matter, then not doing it also doesn't matter" was self talk I can actually see myself using, that and ditching the binary of "I can do everything" and "I'm can do nothing" that keeps me stuck doing nothing.

I love your mindset of distracting yourself from depression, and I will give a try to the method of "if nothing matters, then me doing sport is just as well as me sitting here".
