The trick to making friends as an adult is to not try to make friends. When you are in a setting where everyone is specifically looking for companionship, it sets a bar of expectations that underpins any interaction that you might have.
Like they said in the video, get out and join clubs. Engage in activities that have nothing to do with romanticism or dating, or can even be adjacent to that. Do that in a social setting without actively looking for friends, and you'll eventually find yourself hanging out with your 2 best mates at the pub in no time.

      @whydoineedanameiwillneverp7790 ปีที่แล้ว +42

I think it is because we change what we "expect" from a friend as we age.
Most of those childhood friendships were based on nothing more than proximity, and really weren't more than skin deep. I didn't know much about their home lives, I didn't expect them to turn up to help if I was in the hospital, I certainly wouldn't trust them to make life and death decisions for me. We just got along and had a nice chat for an hour or so every day - and the relationship completely disappeared when one of us moved away. That's what I call _colleagues_ now. We get along, have some laughs and pleasant conversation over lunch and around the water cooler for an hour or so each day, I know zilch about their real home lives, I don't expect them to turn up for me in my darkest hours, and I totally expect the relationships to fall through when one of us moves away.
What I call _friends_ now, I expect a lot more from. Friendships that survive distances and friends who turn up in your darkest hours. Those are very rare in childhood too.

So, a few years back I made a blog post about this. I called it "The Curse of the Thirties" . In my particular case I moved to a different city for college and stayed there in the end so here's what happens in that situation:
    - you leave your existing circle of friends behind; you try to stay in touch but over the years that fades and fades until it's gone
    - you make new college friends but some of them will eventually move back to their hometowns (very common thing to do in Croatia) and fade away
    - your new college friends who stay behind will settle down eventually
    - your college friends who stayed around and settled will get babies and if you don't have a child you'll be pushed out in favour of other people with children with whom they'll now hang out and have plenty in common
    - you will try to find new friends but you'll run into what I call "established circles" because people your age (thirties or so) will already have a circle of friends and most often there is no room for more because no one is willing to start the process afresh
    - you will try to squeeze in but you'll find out that these are not true friendships but rather "purpose-built acquaintances".
    - for example you'll find gym buddies, or you'll join running schools or you'll find D&D groups or boardgame groups and they might welcome you, BUT when your joint activity ends for the day those people will likely go back to their spouses, children or their existing circle of friends
And it gets more and more difficult to penetrate these walls as you get older. I'm only 35 so I have yet to live and see what happens when you get very old, like 70+ I think at that point you'll be able to make new friends because most of the people around you will be alone sadly and/or they'll have PLENTY of time to kill.
Very rarely you WILL be able to make new friends later in life but those will almost NEVER be as strong as your childhood friends because we are all adults with unique aspirations, abilities, wishes, opportunities etc. By the time we're 30+ we will have made some choices which define us and have duties, obligations and/or desires to pursue so even if you do find new friends you'll most often end up putting them on the back burner in favour of everything that happens in your life. And others will do this to you.
And that's fine. Sometimes it IS a little bit difficult if you're 30+ or something and don't have that one person whom you can call out of the blue and make fart jokes or talk about nothing in particular but most often you'll find that having purpose-built acquaintances is all you really need and you'll quickly see which ones you could potentially upgrade to something more.
    Good luck.

This hit so close right from the title that I feel more like crying than laughing. As an adult introvert who spends most of their time at work and the rest at home, with no energy left for social hobbies, it really is so hard to form genuine connections with people that don't also happen to live on the other side of the world 😭

Good comedy skits are also good social commentaries. This is so spot on.

Making friends at any age is so hard but I feel like as an adult it’s so much harder. Just so awkward 😂😂

Ha! Can I be this character's friend? Going purely on the basis that we're both willing to ask the question "will you be my friend?" 😂 this is spot on and also hilarious lads!

    PROST!!!!
(Saying Prost reminds me of a cute little video I received last week, in which a Non-German speaking person is trying her best to get a difficult German sentence recorded. The Irish sketch comedian next to her, who actually does speak some German, was a great help by messing it up with the ONE word he had to say. 🤷🏻‍♀️😜😂)

How to make friends as an adult:
    1. Get a dog,
    2. Walk the dog,
    3. Finally ask people what their names are after six months of anonymous but shockingly chatty puppy playdates!

I'm turning 36 this summer and I moved to a new place a year ago. I still don't know more about by neighbour next door than his name and the type of car he drives. My 7 year old on the other hand, she goes outside on the veranda, spot some kids on the road walking by, yells hello to them and 2 minutes later they're playing together. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't envious of this ability to make friends.

I kept waiting for this to turn into an add for Bumble, I even checked the video description halfway through to see if there was an affiliate link hiding but I was pleasantly surprised. Very funny video lads😄
