    Parking on the wrong side of the road with dipped beam on is my latest bugbear. I see it frequently now, especially with increasing use of supermarket and take away deliveries. I don't think the average driver appreciates that beams are directed to the left and blind oncoming traffic. Lights are so bright on modern cars as well. I find cars overtaking me on unlit motorways blind me from the door mirror.

    • @ethelmini
      @ethelmini ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They don't have to be on the wrong side of the road. It just needs a modest convex slope with how ridiculously bright headlights are now. Then there's crappy aftermarket "upgrade" bulbs that don't align with the reflectors properly, or drivers that just crank the beam adjusters up tp 11.

    • @warriormonk2611

      "Lights are so bright on modern cars" Yes, these LEDs are not only needlessly bright, they're needlessly intense, too (too much brightness in too small an area). They should be shielded so that they direct their light onto the road and not into the poor eyes of pedestrians.

      One of my pet hates too, particularly as well leaving an unnattended vehicle idling, which is against the law, and I see it all the time. Yes headlights these days are way too dazzling (and vehicle regs need to catch up with this) - and fog lights too which unless there is bad visibility is against the law to have on, both front and rear. Just about every other car has them or some extra spot lights on for no reason other than to be a poser!

      I agree, that is how I drive on motorways, it depends on how fast I will catch up the vehicle ahead as to whether I move back into lane one, and on a busy road you could cause more congestion by hogging the middle lane for a few minutes.

    A comment to clip 12, from a resident of northern scandinavia - in snowy conditions ice will tend to build up at junctions and get nicely polished by cars slowing down. There is essentially no grip on this stuff, unless you have studded winter tyres (which are illegal in most of europe), so ABS can't help you. So take it very easy and slow down well in advance.

    • @PedroConejo1939
      @PedroConejo1939 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely. The advice about maintaining ten times the normal following distance is about right - but people just don't believe it. You hear the same things over and over: I've got 4x4; I've got ABS. Ice doesn't care for either of those if you need to stop.

    • @jensaugust743

    • @shm5547
      @shm5547 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nope, not good lane discipline, just an oblivious driver. If they had looked in their mirror, they would have seen there were no vehicles approaching behind and therefore no reason at all to pull over. Every lane change introduces risk, even just the risk of picking up debris in your tyres as you cross the less travelled bit of road. You should only make a lane change when it achieves a purpose.

      @@shm5547 Rule 264 of the Highway Code - Keep in the left lane unless overtaking.
      Granted, one or two of the moves into the left lane may not have been strictly necessary due to the rate the vehicle was catching up to the vehicles ahead but I would rather a driver do this than blindly stick in the centre or outside lane causing problems behind. Those are the truly oblivious ones.

      Rule 264 says you should only move left when safe to do so. If you can see you would shortly need to move right to overtake again, then clearly it's safer to remain in the lane you are in.
      When there are no vehicles ahead or behind, an advanced driving technique is to use the middle lane. It usually has a better surface than lane 1 due to less lorry traffic, has a lower chance of debris and you get more road in case of a tyre blowout.

    • @shm5547
      @shm5547 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DavArc626 they are being unsafe because every lane change increases risk. This is clearly demonstrated at the very last lane change (6:51) when they nearly collide with a lorry, which did not see them due to their erratic move to and from lane 1. Incidentally, I see that the interesting not-a-roundabout you covered at Wirral Waters, Tower Road, Birkenhead CH41 1AA - the one with the strange not-Zebra crossings and the whirlpool painted on the road, which opened in Feb 21, had an injury accident involving 3 cars and 2 slight casualties on 15/06/2021. 2022 numbers not out yet.
    Might that be worth a revisit, since it is part of a scheme which will end up with 13k new homes? Personally, I'd be interested to see how the fairly lightweight materials and paint used, and the design, are surviving the rigours of a 15k vehicle a day A-road.

Staying in the middle lane didn't only take less effort it made their intent clearer to the cars they passed and made them more visible to the truck that did pull out, as well as making it a less of a drama for them to respond when it did.

Sometimes it's better to just stay in the middle lane when overtaking vehicles even slowly, and no it's not lane hogging. Another excellent video Ash, thought provoking as always! A lot of people still think that the point of ABS is to help them stop quicker. Most people have never learned cadence braking which can be just as effective. The main thing with ABS is that it allows you to retain a degree of steering control but many just hit the brake and get a nasty case of 'target fixation' - hitting the thing they are looking at rather than trying to steer away from it. Hope you are having a good Christmas and I look forward to viewing more of your high quality content in 2023.

    • @sameyers2670
      @sameyers2670 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @ska042
      @ska042 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd argue the point of ABS is not absolute stopping distance, it's reliability. It gives pretty close to the ideal braking distance (though not the absolute best) in a large variety of road conditions and it eliminates driver skill and execution of braking technique from the equation. Even in this case with the snow I don't think it's the ABS causing them to fail to slow down. It's the lack of traction, without ABS they would be sliding just as far, just with locked wheels instead of mostly rolling wheels, and as you said without any steering control.
      It makes it so everyone is always able to perform a good emergency stop, instead of some people making really good ones, some people making bad ones, and maybe sometimes people who usually would perform well just mess up one time. ABS always does it about as well as could be expected.

    The one at 8:12 might actually be that they do not see you. It sounds unbelievable at first but when you are not a car and the emerging driver expects either car or no car, they tend to not see anything that is not a car. From the point of view of the cyclist or motorcyclist it really looks like "they look at me and then pull out anyway" but they were looking through you like you are not there. Sometimes they might finally notice you when it is way too late but often they go away from this never knowing they just almost hit someone. I was hit by a car like this twice when
    I was much younger and both times I was convinced to the last moment I had eye contact with the driver. Both drivers looked absolutely puzzled afterwards as to where did I suddenly appear from when I had a direct view to their head for good 10 seconds or more.
    Then I tried to understand this to be able to avoid it and I was shocked how much published research I found that all concludes the same thing: If two options are over 95% of the answer you are looking for you will miss all the other options unless you are conciously checking for them. If when emerging, especially on a route you drive often, you almost always have either a car or an empty road in front of your eyes then unless you concentrate on it you will start just checking for cars and no car equals empty road in your brain. Your brain does not tell you that it has "optimised" the task of checking if the road is empty. You still think you looked if something is coming. But in fact you only checked for cars when you thought you were checking if the road is empty.
    The one experiment that stuck in my memory was where they asked hundreds of volunteers to watch a 3-on-3 basketball match lasting about 20 minutes. They were given the task to make a mark on a paper every time the players in white T-shirts pass the ball between them. After a while they all just watch the people in white and ignore the people in black. Then in the middle there is a guy in a gorila suit for about 30 seconds moving in the view, making gestures to the camera and such. Full 70% of the volunteers did not know about him when they were asked after. Not only that but they were convinced it is impossible, they would have seen and noticed something like that. On the road when cycling I need to know that I am that gorila suit and drivers are only cars - white T-shirts passing the ball.

    What a pleasant Christmas present to accidentally stumble upon your channel...
    I especially like how you pick the videos that clearly show the educational bits without being burdened by the sensational crash footage. As with most close calls, people should understand that each miss is pure coincidence that it wasn't a hit...
    I'll keep browsing through your archive for a while, but in case there isn't one there, would it be a suitable video for your channel that covered the importance of keeping distance in front AND behind the vehicle? So many people cut in so closely, totally ignoring the fact that their brakes might be more effective than the ones on the car they just overtook. Similarly, tailgaters really must hate their vehicle. I've got one of those automatic braking cars and I've been rear-ended twice already because the system sprung in action. That system is 100x faster than a human so there is no way on earth they can ever stop in time when they only keep 0.2 seconds distance (instead of the required 2.5 seconds, or 2 seconds as a bare minimum).
    One thought on what you said about ABS. I'm not sure what message you were trying to convey when you said "notice how badly the ABS slows down the vehicle" (or something similar), but I'm convinced that without ABS your viewer would have been rear-ended by that car (the one that was clearly not using a speed adapted to the snowy road conditions, as could be seen right from the start of the clip). ABS is not there to slow down better. On the contrary, it trades a small portion of minimal braking distance in optimal conditions in for a lot more maneuvering capability in the worst of conditions.
    Have a great holiday season and I'm looking forward to more of your videos in 2023! Thanks!

As I said, if the situation allows I will permit drivers to merge. I would do this when the general flow of traffic is less than 10 mph, which it can be quite often in my area. You have to make value judgements while driving, not just slavishly follow the highway code. Ask yourself this question. You are trying to emerge from a side road, and the traffic flow is slower than walking pace. Would you, give n the opportunity to emerge by a driver on the main road slowing down to give you that chance, would you refuse it, as it's against the highway code? 4:14 - as a daily motorcycle rider, IAM Instructor and soon to start IAM Master trainee, my thought is that it's 75% biker, 25% driver. The rider, before even directly coming into conflict with the Fiat, presented a self-hazard by using too much speed. In a crawl-stop-crawl-stop situation like that, I would be using sub 10MPH along that section, irrelevant of if there is anything in either junction. I believe that if you need to use the front brake whilst filtering, you're travelling too fast, rear brake only. Whilst the car driver should have focused on where their car was going and thanked both drivers after the emerge, the rider put themselves in that situation. I always try to hold back in a gap whilst filtering if there is a blind or occupied junction, especially since we are just as missable as cyclists can be. Shame on the rider, he needs to do more hazard perception testing and needs to do some training, especially in anticipation skills. The driver needs to think further ahead and use better observations

    • @katierscott8771
      @katierscott8771 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Biker was filtering a little fast, although given the amount of space he had a bit higher speed is understandable. However the fault is 100% the Fiat's because they are the one performing the hazardous action that caused the near collision. The highway code does state for us (I'm a biker too) to keep speed low, but does also mention filtering as being fine. It also mentioned when turning right "watch out for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians including powered wheelchairs/mobility scooter users as they are not always easy to see. Be aware that they may not have seen or heard you if you are approaching from behind" - therefore the car is at fault and had a collision occured would have carried most of the blame with the insurance. I know from experience of an RTC I was involved in that putting your vehicle into the path of another with poor observations carries a significant weight of blame.

    1:50 that's the M3 in Belfast. The worst junction from your nightmares and then some. Its a motorway about 1/4 of a mile long, which is just one long junction. You have, on both sides, dual on and off ramps so you have two lanes of joiners trying to get on, while the entire left lane is trying to get off. Each on the off ramps goes to about 6 different places and in the direction the cam car is going it gets really confusing because both the left off ramp and the motorway both go to the same place. Most likely the taxi at the front realised at the last moment he was headed the wrong way. Which, ironically enough, if he's stayed on the off ramp he would have ended up back on the motorway about 200 yards up.

    The vehicle parked on the left with the headlights on is an Ambualance. (can see it clearly at 6:11) with the side door open and it looks like one of the crew leaning in. They should really be on blue lights, but this looks to be a patient transport ambulance so won't have those fitted (can't see the top light bar, and grill isn't clear enough to see if there are lights there - and most patient transport ambulances don't have blue lights as they're not emergency response vehicles) - so they leave their lights on to protect themselves while loading or unloading a patient. Now, they should be using side lights and hazard lights, not dipped headlights but if there's been too many near misses while they might have adopted this approach.
    But... it is a demonstration of how much impact these lights have on approaching drivers when you're stopped on the wrong side of the road.

      I recall the statement in the Highway Code which basically commands the road user to not act on instructions from anyone other than a uniformed officer or warden (of former times}. Don't give instructions if you're not in uniform. The red Fiat driver was correctly in two minds about crossing. Should have stayed put.

    With the stressball incident, was it a case of the horn blaster not being fully allert to the situation as much as the white car pulling out suddenly? They usually say "expect the unexpected," in road safety lessons and this seems like a perfect example of that.

    Clip #5 is exactly the reason why I always do a quick over the shoulder check to my left when moving back to the left on a busy motorway, as mirrors won't always cover that wide a field of view. Especially if it's more than two lanes and especially more so if it's anywhere near an on slip. Also a reason why I always signal a lane change back to the left, though I know that's at variance with a few recent videos.

    3:41 Some 90s school buses had indicators that buzz just like that. As a (special needs) kid, I used to count the number of times it buzzed on each journey, plus I added every speed limit sign I saw onto that number!! AFAIK they were mid-engined buses with diesel-fired heaters.

    Funny how you mention regular mirror use as I've found myself trying to check my mirrors in video games (I'm not gonna discuss the politics about games here). When I got NFS heat I found myself trying to do the routines like msm when at junctions in said game via use of the camera. I laughed about it to my friends in discord as it highlighted just how much of a habit it was for me to do these checks in reality.
    About the abs clip. I wonder who had all season tyres on? And are things such as snow socks/chains ever considered by the public? I've been stranded due to ice for the majority of December all because my road tyres could not get any bite on my drive (4x4 means nothing without traction) so I'm looking into getting all season tyres in the future. I also learned but I'm unsure if this is true that all season tyres have a longer braking distance (I can kinda see how this is the case).

    Clip 16 - not heard of "keep left unless overtaking" ? Maybe there was one or two extra pull ins to lane 1 but seemed OK to me.
    Better than the middle lane hogger as there is a vehicle to be overtaken a mile ahead.
    Unless the vehicles in lane 1 are close together then you should pull in as you are converting a three lane motorway into a 2 lane motorway.

    I like your saying "He doesn't have the brains he was born with". I might use that one myself :P
    I do want to pay tribute to Clip 7 though. That lorry driver did a pretty good job of that overtake, seemed to give plenty of space and didn't pull back in until it was safe to do so. That motorcycle though, I don't know how he managed that without causing an accident.
    For Clip 10, the Fiat did a really good job making sure that it was safe before finishing the emerge. Something that could have been an accident mitigated by a responsible driver.
    As for people who drive on the pavement (especially with the speeds that van driver was going), I don't think a report alone is enough. They need their license revoked and a good few years of a driving ban. I hope there were no pedestrians on those footpaths at those times.

    I have noticed so many people unable to let emergency vehicles past safely, or more accurately think stopping is the best thing to do. Last week I came around a corner to find an ambulance having to go round a car that stopped on the inside of the turn. Day before I let a police car pass and then watch the car in front bring it to a halt by immediately stopping to let it pass with lots of traffic coming the other way. I recon there is a bit of blind panic occurring with some people

    I’m currently learning to drive (in the Chesterfield area where I live), my partner bought me pretty decent Dash Cam ready to be installed in our car for when and if I pass and I couldn’t have been more pleased.
    The instructors car I’m learning in has a dash cam and out of the 15 lessons I’ve had so far he has to use it to record 3 clips worthy of being on this channel.
    1. A bus went from left lane of a 3 lane roundabout and cut past the exit onto the lane I was supposed to go in.
    2. A big truck like construction van pulled out of a junction in front of me when they had very little space, they probably thought they could bully the learner into getting what they wanted.
    3. I was approaching a roundabout and only wanted the 1st exit, the car behind me stopped, turn into the next lane, floored it out into the roundabout without looking and sped into the 1st exit.
    Jaw dropped my instructor clipped it, then as we safely went around we caught up to them in a long queue line and sat behind them to which my instructor wrote the registration number down, clipped it again to be sure and after that lesson went and reported it straight away.
    .
    Again my partner doesn’t know just exactly how much I loved my gift this year because like you said, you can do everything right but it’s like people want to crash into you.

    Bit harsh on the BMW #16. The video was sped up to make it look like he was changing lane excessively when in reality he/she was doing what we’re all taught. In fact the cammer (had the video not been sped up) should have pulled in themselves more than once.

    Re Clip 12 - Winter tyres make a fantastic difference on snow and ice. And they wear much less than summer tyres do in the cold. I am amazed at how few people use them.
    Re Clip 14 - I was once walking on the pavement when I saw a Police Panda car parked on the wrong side with his headlights on. I approached the Police driver and pointed out that a) according to the Highway Code, he should not park with his headlights on and b) it would dazzle oncoming traffic. His response was that he might need to respond to an emergency and hence had to keep his headlights on (!)

    Was the bike overtaking before the lorry moved out? Did the lorry just miss it? Or did it just push its way through? Either way from their own sense of self preservation you would've expected them to pull back.

    Clip 10. I think viewers are missing something here. The traffic is moving very slowly. The black car that the cammer is following puts the brake lights on as it reaches the junction and also just after it. I would have stopped too, whether the Fiat500 was there or not. This would be to keep the junction clear untill it is certain that the traffic is still moving and the juction can be cleared. The Fiat driver takes advantage of the gap and does a good job in proceeding with caution.The motorbike rider hadn't a clue, very poor hazard perception in this situation.

    Clip #9 gives me not so fond memories of Maidstone and Kent. I used to live there during the mid 2000s, and regards for drivers over there, they seem to just forget about anything to do it’s road scanning, reading the traffic ahead, signalling when necessary etc. A lot of hesitation from drivers on roundabouts, it’s mad down in Kent for driving.

    Cyclist like myself are using garmin radar technology when out riding. Paired with, My Bike Radar Traffic app, it picks up vehicles from about 150 meters letting you know on your headset how many vehicles and how close they are behind you, it records their speed on approaching you and the speed it passes you and counts how many have passed you that ride. The Varia RCT715 radar which I’ve got also videos every single vehicle as well. Thankfully tech is making the roads a little safer for cyclists. 👍🏼🚴🏻‍♂️

    5:10 I bet 90% of drivers who drive in these conditions. All have stock tyres or cheap tyres that preform okay in dry weather, poor in rain & shit in snow. Tyres are the only thing connecting us to the road. Yet people cheap out on them all the time.
