    Interesting. I'am using a Toshiba rice cooker my mom purchased in 1969 when we lived on O'ahu. Still works great after 56 years and it doesn't have a non-stick lining.

    In the 80’ I watch Ken Homm on TV and still use his cooking method up to present day. 1 cup rice, 2 cups cold water, no washing. According to Ken you wash vitamins out if you wash. Stir, cover the lid tightly, bring to boil, (at this stage I boil for about a full 2 minutes, my way, not Ken’s). Turn heat off and wrap pan with tea towels well and leave well alone for 20/30 minutes. The residual heat continues to cook the rice till it rehydrates. Perfect rice every time. I’m sure there are many more ways to cook rice but I’m always stick to this one. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you so much for this video. When I bought an Instant pot I started cooking my rice in it and never turned back. Always turns out perfect and so easy. I also want to add that I love your haircut! I keep asking my hairdresser for this cut and I always end up with a bob. 😒

    Great video! I use a rice cooker and what I’ve learned from your video is the only thing I need to do which I don’t do at the moment, is fluff the rice when it’s done. Nice to know I’m doing something right 😃

    I've seen one TH-camr demonstrate cooking rice like pasta...lots of water, check it for your desired doneness and then drain it. I can't even contemplate trying that method, haha. I only allowed myself to buy an Instant Pot by getting rid of my rice cooker, egg cooker, one slow cooker and an electric skillet. (I'm a bit of a small appliance junkie.) As long as I stick to a good Asian rice, the IP makes it perfect every time. Thank you for so clearly and thoroughly showing all these methods, Flo. My mom only cooked MJB long grain rice, a very different method with that.

      I do not understand cooking rice like pasta. I can only imagine a soggy mess unless you’re making congee. I got rid of a few appliances too when I got my IP. Then I ended up with 3 of them. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    I know this is off topic but I have to say it…. I remember 9 years ago I bought my first instapot and I still have it to this day but lord knows at the time I had no idea what I was doing with it so I began searching on TH-cam different recipes and ways to utilize this machine and I ended up coming across your channel… long story short I subscribed and I’ve been a huge supporter since! We didn't have a rice cooker so I learned to make rice on the stove top in the 70s. But it was a 1 to 2 ratio and was perfect every time. Now I have an instant pot & usually make rice using the 4 min method. Again, prefect rice everytime! But I still use the stove top sometimes.
    Problem is when my son was younger, sometimes, he wanted a stickier rice and I could never get it to be sticky. Now I think I needed to use a short grain rice to make a stickier rice.

    • @FloLum
      @FloLum  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      He may be wanting sticky rice which is sold as glutenous or sweet rice. It is cooked differently than regular rice and is far more sticky. But it is possible that he wants short grain sushi rice which is a bit stickier; made same method in IP but I generally soak it for 30 mins before cooking.

    My Japanese fuzzy logic rice cooker is going on 20 years! I use Jasmine rice that I buy at Aldi's. I don't rinse the rice anymore. I add a half to one tsp of olive/sunflower blended oil. One thing you didn't mention was the great fragrance of Jasmine rice.

      @@FloLum That is so TRUE. Every time at dinner, someone will comment that the rice is too soft or too hard, never that it's cooked perfect. I know tastes buds differ but the middle area is so difficult to achieve is what I'm getting at.

      I'm 57 and have always used the hand method though now I just eyeball it. I add a pinch of salt and give it a good stir - never stir after it boils or the rice will stick to the pot. I also cook my rice for 22 mins. Not 21 or 23 lol, always 22. Not sure why but I get perfect rice every time.

    It's very important to wash rice because:
    "Rice polishers are used after the rice has gone through the whitening process. They are abrasive machines that use talc or some other very fine dust to buff the outer surface of rice kernels." [Wikipedia]

  • @Skygirl1101
    @Skygirl1101 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    In the instant pot, the one to one ratio is correct. I weigh my rice in grams and add the exact same weight of water to the instant pot. This is a good method if you don’t want to make exact cups of rice. So, if you make 300 grams of rice, add 300 grams of water.

    Because I'm diabetic, I wash a mix of Brown Basmati Rice, Low G.I. Brown Rice, Hulled Millet & Quinoa, let it soak for 8 hours (to activate it), before putting it into a rice cooker.
    I can't imagine cooking rice without a rice cooker using the absorption method. Any other method is produces inferior results.

    i seriously cannot be bothered with the measurements.
    i learn the hard way that measurements does not work with rice from the various parts of the world.
    my foolproof is to parboil with lots of water... like pasta.
    then strain.
    put the rice back on the stove, when most of the liquid is gone from the bottom of the pan, i turn the heat down to lowest setting for 15 minutes.
    turn heat off.
    wait 10 minutes.
    fluff.
    serve, or divide into serving portions and freeze.
    comes out perfect every time, regardless what kind of rice or what part of the world the rice is from.
