Nicely edited video speed-ups during lulls and very nice video speed resumptions. You've done many thumbs ups; where are the thumbs-downs? And what will FSD need to do to get a 10 from you, instead of a 9?
@bearlemley That all depends on when Robotaxi is ready for prime-time. It may take a bit longer to reach the point where there is an indisputably high confidence of no interventions in any area, and it would also have to rely on remote intervention should there be an issue. Also, the law would have to catch up, as right now you legally can't be the operator of any motor vehicle (that includes supervising a self-driving car) while under the influence. May take a few years for the law to catch up with the tech on that one, even after some time of successful demonstration. That would also vary state-to-state, of course.
You just can't appreciate how well done and viewable your videos are until you watch some of the others. Unbearable to sit through them despite how excited I am to see 12.4.2. Thanks for being so damn good at this!
Im loving FSD, I did hit a curb during a u-turn, but im testing the limits in Dallas. I did make a critical intervention when i engaged FSD right before getting to stopped traffic. It did not see the stopped vehicles in front and I had to slam on the brakes (car in front brake lights weren't on). The cars behind me could had smashed me like a tin can. Im more careful about how I use FSD and always give feedback. One point alot people dont consider, is even if your fully attentive, if the cars behind you aren't, and you have to intervene, you are still at risk regardless.. One day we will get there guys, just always keep this in mind. We will get there faster the more we test, just be careful how and when you decide to use it.
All credit to your channel for finally convincing me to go ahead and make the Tesla purchase with FSD. I can't believe how refined and polished FSD has gotten.
As a transportation engineer for a state DOT, I see what you’re saying about the congestion delay, but that accordion affect definitely plays a part in creating MORE traffic on highways, but it shouldn’t have been applied on those arterial streets you had to use the accelerator on. Looking forward to the next release.
This is an excellent video reaction, informative and genuine without clickbait, annoying music or other gimmick nonsense. I think you, not just the FSD, are getting smoother and better in your running commentary. You are articulating your thoughts in real time and your consistent route tests allow you to tell us exactly what is better and worse from version to version. Thanks for what you're doing.
Waiting for my wife to wake up so that I can watch this on the big screen and get proper situational awareness. Truly hope it is a good improvement. Thanks for sharing.
Agreed. I have only been paying attention and watching videos for about a month, but what I appreciate about this channel is the fair unbiased patter throughout the videos. I also appreciate the standardization of the routes and rating systems as well as his fair judgements on what he does and doesn’t flag. The goal of FSD isn’t to drive the way that YOU would drive, but that it drives in a rational manner like you would expect from an Uber driver. You can’t ding it every time it is more cautious than you would be. As long as it is consistent and reliable then it is accomplishing what it is intended to accomplish.
slow crawl is fine for me. I like that. The good part is it seems to be getting to opinion no longer actual issues. Be nice to see this come to more countries.
Congratulations on getting 12.4.2 OTA. My fingers are crossed hopping I get OTA later this week. I am getting excited watching your reaction to 12.4.2 performance improvements. Thanks for excellent review.
Great video, really like how you’re testing the car, it’s good to test it down the same route and the score system is a nice touch 👍🏼 the software just keeps getting better and better.
Going forward it would be interesting to know if you did nothing (disengage or intervention) would the car reach the destination safely? Yes, it might be going too slow or too fast or even take the wrong turn but if it was a robotaxi drive would it be successful?
I am looking forward to this build. 12.3.6 has been handing my 1 hour complex commute with only accelerator press interventions. Amazing considering where we were just a year ago.
You do a great job narrating the drive and actually important aspects from the point of view of someone who understands the technology deeper than the average person.
I like your style of reviews. Picking out things like following the curb, going under the speed limit, and indecisive lane changes covers most of my issues with 12.3.6
Flagging: you might be occasionally too slow to flag. It was 25 seconds from merge to when you flagged. If it’s a 30 second clip then you just made it. Just giving feedback to your feedback. 😁 Much respect and thanks for your excellent reviews over a long period. Thanks.
I always look for your videos when a new release has dropped to the OG testers. I always love your commentary and honest insight!!! Keep doing what your doing man!!! Preps us with what’s to come to our own Teslas!! The near future is looking up for FSD 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I think the slow crawl at the 22th minute is because FSD didn't want to block the intersection? in case the leading car suddenly stopped, and leave no room for FSD to place itself.
I'd love to see you loop around to the highway on-ramp a bunch of times. My interest in FSD is where it can do the things that can be a bit stressful for a human driver. On-ramps in traffic and highway speed lane changes in traffic to make an exit are the two things that come to mind that I'd love to see FSD handle better than me. Right now, it seems those are two things it can't do very well, so I wouldn't pay for it at this point.
at 13:46 (and before) and 14:19 and 14:36 I see the sign Speed Limit 25 but it stays at 35, why didn't you see these cases? Couldn't police give you a ticket for this, if you do it on purpose?
Yes they could depending on the location and scenario. However, in this area police are pretty passive for cars moving to the flow of traffic even if over the limit to an extent.
While this is true, because the highway was so close to and on top of city streets it hadn't switched to the highway stack (v11). You know this because the words "auto" for auto-offset (a v12 feature) is still present. When it switches that goes away and your on v11 highway
Is FSD any where close to dealing with: toll booths (w or w/o EZ Pass), gated communities, multi level parking garages, or pulling over for emergency vehicles? Your testing videos and scorings are great and valuable. Thanks 🙏🏽
Great video, very helpful. Making a tesla FSD review interesting is insanely hard however you managed to pull it off. If you can do that, you can review anything just like Marques Brownlee
I am heartened to see the better turn radius on the right rear repeater. Maybe there is hope that 12.4 will give the ditches in my neighborhood a miss and stop trying to rip off my right rear wheel by turning too early.
Those were 2 great test drives with the new exciting FSD version! I agree with all your comments and assessments about the drives. I would love to see Tesla fix the unnecessary turn signals and start avoiding potholes, and they do need to smooth out that highway transition. Question: one of the roads you passed was something “DWY”. What does DWY stand for?
Well, looks pretty good. Less need for hands on wheel will be handy. Never thought I would care about that before I bought my Tesla but it's not long before you realize that in so many cases it's a hassle. Nice to just relax and pay attention but let the car drive in cases like this. I don't trust it much in congested areas but where I live there are plenty of places it can drive me.
I also thought the cars were not parked, but was waiting in line on the road. The way the sunlight hit their backs, it seemed the red lights were on. Even I got a bit dizzy trying to figure out what was happening lol
No there is a special camera button that employees and older testers get to flag things. That said, I don't flag accelerator presses it's just me wanting to move faster than what the cat has planned.
I'm a commercial driver, and the larger following distance for me and most commercial drivers is preferred. The car is doing great leaving a larger distance.
In some of the places where you didn't think it was accelerating fast enough, it might have been because traffic ahead was stopped? I often don't accelerate as fast as others when I'm in stop-and-go traffic because I don't want to accelerate if I'm just going to brake again.
Great video! Great info… can’t wait until I get 14.4.2! I have a question.. totally off topic, but I noticed lots of small solar panels on certain telephone poles in your neighborhood. Are those feeding streetlights? Are they for another purpose? Just curious. Keep up the good work!
I’m still on 12.3.6 and I’m incredibly impressed with it…only complaints I have is the car sometimes hugs the line in the middle of the road or the line on the shoulder of the road. It doesn’t do this often. My biggest complaint by far is it constantly gets in the passing lane for no reason and frequently does this fairly close to an upcoming right turn. I’m new to FSD and probably am apt to disengage FSD unnecessarily. I’ll be really impressed with 12.4.2 if it improves both of these situations. Thanks for the video.
There is a setting in the Autopilot menu to "exit the passing lane" you can enable that and it should get out if it needs to use the passing lane to pass.
Would love to see how it does with multiple left turn lanes and see how which lane is chosen. I’ve been on 12.3.6 and it never gets in the correct turning lane. Most of the time it is in lane going straight instead of the turning lane
Excellent review as always. I have been looking forward to your video of 12.4.2. @ 17:55, bad decision by a human but great reaction from FSD which actually slowed to avoid getting into an accident or even making it a close call. I think this release is good for mass release and look forward to using and giving my feedback to Tesla.
A question about FSD in the S. Can you move the visualization to the main display from the drivers display. I have FSD on a 3, was thinking about upgrading to the S but when I test drove the S I couldn't see the visualization because it was blocked by the wheel. You have the yoke which doesn't cut it off but it's still impossible to see because it has a black background instead of a white background. Is that configurable on the S?
If your steering wheel is starting to peel you can get a new one from Tesla that has the horn in the center, like a normal car. The horn button location you have now is switched out with a camera button. There is a bulletin on your steering wheel so the new/upgraded one is installed for free. I upgraded the one on my Plaid and the material feels different.. The wheel has stitching and it feels like leather, even though I know it isn't.
I think that UPS driver backed up into a car at 9:36 🤦♂️ It's on the right side of the intersection. If he didn't hit that car. It's extremely close. 😮

Only AI Driver is better
I get the impression that the car is now at the point where it should report bad drivers, instead of being reported for bad driving!
💯
Yes, very soon it will allow drunk drivers to get to the next bar without a ticket.

Huge! Perfect drive. I don't take parking lot performance seriously as long as there is no seamless route to parking lot function.
