OUTSTANDING Video -- Love your competent and non-biased assessment of FSD -- some of the other TH-cam FSD review videos feel like TESLA marketing hype.
You are still the best. Glad you are back. I appreciate your comments as they are actually helpful. I have 12.5.4 on hardware 3 and it is a little different but very close. Thanks again.
The FSD video from one of the OGs that I always wait for!!!
Just by far the best channel to watch FSD videos. Calm, straight forward thoughts, unbiased and informative. Keep it up!
Thank you
Thank you for doing this video without unnecessary music, or intros. Subscribed!
I like your unbiased assessment and commentary, it's always a joy. The gentleman you are, you disengaged to make that pedestrian more comfortable. I just got 12.5 (still HW3) yesterday after being stuck on 12.3.6 during the entire summer. Looking forward to it.
Enjoy the hands-free experience
Hey. Just watched and subscribed based on your great FSD narration. Thanks 👍🏼
I installed 12.5.4 this evening on my '22 Model S LR, coming from 12.5.1.5. Your FSD drives help me understand what to expect with a new version. Nice work!
I love your FSD videos. They are very informative about Tesla full self driving.
Thank you
Sweet. Another video. Keep it up.
Great video appreciate you're efforts in bringing these to us.
Thank you for this. I just got 12.4.5 in my car and I really appreciate your through review.
In 12.5.4 I notice most improvement in what is now outstanding ability in lane selection; on Ca freeways and the like. Much improved from previous versions.
Another great video. I agree about this build. I just updated my 2022 y for a 2024 as well. Curbed my wheel the second day
Impressive video and demo. Amazing technology.
Great video, channel! FSD does not slow down enough for all speed bumps in my experience. Would be awesome if you could mark the location of speed bumps so the car knows to slow down where they are located.
💯
You're one of 3-4 FSD testers I prefer to watch. Your commentaries are on par. The slight difference in the first right turn was different than you expected, but you have to take into account the fact that this is now your second vehicle. Therefore, an exact response of vehicle #2 would naturally be different. Software can have its own characteristics and behavior in the same environment. As usual, thanks for your excellent test drive of FSD 12.5.4. I'd like a parking demo and a "call-to-self, and a parallel parking demo. That would be interesting coming from your Tesla Model S.
I'm excited to try this out!
Excellent review of 12.5.4 drives. Can't wait to get OTA. Finally got 12.5.2.1 OTA to my HW3 2022 MSLR last week, and have been thoroughly enjoying the lack of nags and its performance. Only a few minor disengagements and nothing serious so far.
I appreciate the //CAR CONFIG// section. Provides context about the test drive. How about another section about highlights on "First Impressions"? Test results, scores. Rough quick one.
I leave that in the video so people can watch and have context
12.5.4 on my 2024 M3 feels like a step back. Very jerky wheel making 90 degree turns…lots of hesitation I had to push through both in Standard and Assertive.
Update…second trip was way better. And it breezed thru flashing yellow lights with no problem.
@@deanrinehartI had the same experience with it appearing to improve after the initial 2 uses. I’ve been putting about 3k miles a month on fsd in a 24 dual motor and 24 m3p. I’m really impressed and summon had exceeded my expectations.
If anyone from Tesla A.I team is reading this comment - please update new Model 3 cars to FULL Autoshift capability like Model S owners have enjoyed for a while now... still limited to Autoshift only out of park.
What’s the full one like?

8:20 Agree fully. Not sure why they don't visualize trains as of yet. But my guess is that the visualizations on the screen are not a priority at this point (kind of how they stopped visualizing cones).
It takes extra compute power
My guess is that the cameras can only visualize that much that a train and a truck have no difference.
Today my HW3 FSD 12.5.4 stopped to zero MPH at a GREEN LIGHT from 35 mph and slammed on the brakes to zero mph on a country road from 45 mph. No apparent reason in either case. A lot of great behaviors on 12.5.4 but seems like phantom braking we experienced in v11 has returned.
That started with 12.5.1.5. The phantom braking and over braking returned
@@nimasahabi9421 si si
@@nimasahabi9421 tonight it tried to run two red lights literally within a half mile of each other. No traffic around. These weren’t borderline, close calls, yellow to red type situations. These were solid reds the entire time. Doesn’t even slow a bit within idk, maybe 50-100 feet so I slam on the brakes. Maybe it would’ve slowed but by that time if I’m slamming on the brakes, it’s too late. I’ve been using FSD daily since early v11 days for some context.
You definitely have PTSD about those curbs.
🫣
Can’t wait for this one to go wide man, it actually looks incredible. ASS is definitely my favorite part of the FSD package.
You should disengage and report pot holes that are missed.
There are so few disengagements now so testers need to make sure they report any issues.
at 5:00, if you maintained speed and stop in behind the leading vehicle, I would be fine as the pedestrian is jaywalking and taking into consideration the speed of vehicles. I won't count this as a safety disengagement.
💯🎯
Whether it should have stopped is arguable, but it absolutely SAW her, you can see her clearly on display well before she began moving.
@tommornini2470 Yup. It was about to stop, you can see the stop line drawn as soon as she enters the road.
@@bereketgobeze8546 I rewatched, and agree it was going to stop - but not for her, for the light and cars ahead.
It made a decision, and driver said at summary it was OK, he was being overly polite.
Yes not a safety disengagement a courtesy disengagement. If you watch it back you will see the car think about stopping as she approached the road then she steps back and it proceeded. Then the other car let's her go and she does and at that time our car was ready to stage
@@tommornini2470I mean that is an opinion. We have no way to know exactly why it stopped. I could argue the car did visualize the person illegally crossing and was going to stop. I still agree with not allowing chance to play out.
Here is my review. 12.5.4 is a downgrade in terms of driving compared to 12.5.2 for me, but actually Smart Summon is beyond incredible.
To start, I drove version 12.5.2 from the Bay area to Seattle, Washington and then drove another 600 miles in that city and then back with almost no interventions. Sure, it took some turns awkwardly and was a bit slow to do things, but it was consistent and predictable. Version 12.5.4 has been a letdown in every way in terms of driving. It constantly brake checks, imagines stop signs that aren't there, and refuses to go on green lights. It sometimes makes erratic movements, jerking the steering wheel violently, and I have no idea why. I've tried cleaning and recalibrating the cameras and nothing seems to work. I don't understand how no one else is experiencing this issue, but to be fair, I drive around 250 miles a day (60% city streets). My commute alone is 115 miles depending on traffic.
Same
Same. Huge downgrade for me compared to 12.3.6. Makes no sense. It's basically undrivable for me. Continuous hard braking and hesitations in all busy traffic scenarios. I have a Model S with HW3.
Just finished a 800 mile drive on 12.5.4.0 in a 2017 M3 LR...
1: On interstates and in the city, speed was good. But on state highways, speed wandered and twice the car accelerated when being passed as if it didn't want to let the car pass! Scary the first time and probably pissed of the driver of the other car. Not so much a surprise the second time. 2: It would only slow from highway to city speeds about half the time. It would blow right into town in a 35 zone at 60 unless there was a car ahead. 3: Completely missed two left turns that were mapped and one was on a four lane divided highway with no alternative exit for miles. 4. While emergency vehicle was approaching from other direction, it tried to pass the car in front of us that was correctly pulling over, nearly crossing the dividing line into the emergency vehicle path instead of slowing and pulling over. 5. Most serious was steering on tight curves on state highways. Many, many times the car wandered onto the dividing line in a tight turn to the right and occasionally crossed the line into the other lane... on blind curves! It felt like the car wasn't slowing down for the curve and then got behind in the middle of the turn and momentum took it over the line. This was dangerous as hell! Other times the car slowed perfectly to take the curve but not always. Twice I had to take over because we simply had NO confidence the car would take an oncoming series of tight mountain turns in any kind of a safe manner. The car is amazing so much of the time, but the lack of consistency, as you say, and the possible results of some mistakes destroys confidence!
I personally don't love the videos where people describe in detail everything. The fsd is thinking, because I don't think you're right. 🙏
And I understand what you're saying about consistency, doing it this way or that, but in the real world, you can do things the same to a degree, but there's always nuanced differences because the real world is ever changing, there's so many factors associated with it that most drivers never even think about.
@ 5:00 mark, the visualization did see the person and the car was already slowing down for the signal light and stopped cars. I disagree that the car did not see the person\jaywalker. I believe she would have walked behind the car and if she committed to walking in front, then your car would have stopped in time. @ 4:50 she actually took a step back towards the sidewalk but moved forward after your car slowed more and then when you hit the breaks, she walked in front of your car.
Thx for info. Hopefully HW3?is good enough to detect
First time viewer. Big fan of the check mark report card (what I call it) at the bottom of the video.
4:55 autopilot sees every pedestrian. You can even see it in your visualization. However, it does not treat every pedestrian the same. This pedestrian was illegally jaywalking, and autopilot had the right of away. With enough clearance, it chose to continue.
You're just too nice buddy 😊
Right of way or not, if you have the opportunity to stop and you don’t you’re still liable.
@zachb1706 The car would have pulled up behind the car in front of it, and she could have continued to illegally jaywalk behind him
I'm curious to know..perhaps front bumper camera is needed to see road imperfections ahead so that FSD, like human, can smoothly avoid potholes, sewers and other road imperfections or debris.
I don't think so. If your eyes can see the road imperfections, then the front-facing cameras should be able to see them (with sufficient resolution) without the help of a bumper camera. The issue is whether FSD can process the context. 1) is there a sign for road bumps, 2) is this a deep pot hole? 3) is this a really bad road kill (skunk) 4) what is the traffic situation to warrant an evasive maneuver? e.g., speed, other cars, pedestrians. These may be issues of software, resolution, compute speed, but unlikely to be due to camera position.
@@khuo0219Agree. - this is just an improvement that needs to be prioritized.
my nightmare scenario would be a collapsed bridge. 😂
@@Robert...Schrey
That likely won't be categorized as "drivable surface", so no problem. The car won't think "oh, it's just a huge pothole, I can drive over it".
@@khuo0219 Agree. What would be nice is if FSD failed to process it in time, but detected after the fact - it would make a note that there is a pothole near that location (to look out for in the future). Ideally it would get updated in the map notes and distributed to fleet. Another nice option would be for drivers/passengers to be able to suggest for the vehicle to hug left or hug right in the lane at certain GPS locations and have it remember/share that.
Mr. B. T., for a good curb avoidance test, try entering the W. O. Whole Foods going south on Prospect
No sir I don't do that when driving manually and you know why 🤣
@@BlackTesla But my Y has been 100% successful at it, and I’ve done it a lot. Scared the shit out of me the first few times, but now I’m relaxed.
On another note, disappointed 12.5.4 isn’t up to limo driver, and waiting to see how it is on AI3. Do you still have an AI3 car with fsd? Hope so because I value your assessment. Thanks for doing these videos
Interesting
FSD should be called Master of Cutting People Off - that’s what has been my experience couple hundred miles - also it reads speed posts of BUS and TRUCK signs on the freeway so you end up going 20 miles slower than everyone - pretty useless to me in Chicago Land
Yeah the bus/truck limit is a problem
It's weird that I'm getting these updates so fast
Wide release trying to hit the milestones they put out
Generally good drive but I have another complaint about something you said around 15:15.
The level of perception of comfort that a passive passenger who's not paying attention to the road has is going to be completely different from an active passenger or an active or passive driver.
In your evaluations as a driver, though it is important for you to remain a certain level of attentiveness in order to provide the cues necessary to improve the system. Once that system is improved, what you have provided to it will definitely make it much safer than it should be for a person who's a passive passenger who is not paying attention by definition to those things that you are utilizing right now to improve it to the level of active passenger.
Ultimately, once the system is significantly beyond the driving capability of most humans as judged by the refinements being performed by input of test drivers like yourself, there will be a over correction in terms of the capabilities that a passive passenger would experience. A good example of this you actually have in this drive as well, You are making some comments with regarding Lane placement and whether or not the car should turn the same way on a given corner and that's just not necessary. Because when you're sitting in the backseat as long as the car is turning, you don't really care if it's a foot or an inch or a half an inch off from the curb as it's turning. As long as it turns smoothly and doesn't hit the curb, you're not even aware of its proximity to the curb as most cases as a passive passenger you're not paying attention to the road at all. You're in your phone. You're taking a nap. Etc
Now it's a good thing that you're providing the refinements necessary for an active person so that the car can actually develop capabilities such that it will drive as if anyone in the car is a active passenger to ensure that their comfort is met at a minimum case. But that level of comfort is more stringent than what would be required from an individual who's not paying attention to the road, A passive passenger.
Do you notice any difference in the overall build quality of the 2024 build vs your old 2022?
Major differences will do a video soon
@@BlackTesla oh wow. I can't wait!
👍👍
Not just see a train as a train, but NEVER stop on top of a railroad track.
Regarding the visual portrayal of trains as trucks, I don't know if FSD actually "thinks" it is a string of trucks, any more than it thought other cars were just neon-framed boxes back in the early days. I think that what is shown on the user display may just be a visual representation for us.
Any more close encounters with curbs?
Yes 😔
@@BlackTesla interesting, I just don’t get those with my 2022 Model S AI3. I wonder if it’s the ultrasonic sensors that I have. But didn’t you just trade in an older model S that maybe had ultrasonics and didn’t you get your curb scrapes with that one?
M. B.T., do you know why Tesla keeps using the metric of "x fewer interventions per y miles" with new updates, rather than "disengagements"? Wouldn't that be the more meaningful measure? And if they are purposefully using interventions in lieu of disengagements (hoping no one notices), what does that say?
I think a disengagement is an intervention. It's a point where a human needs to take over which is what leads to a disengagement. However unlike a disengagement an intervention can also include a pedal press as you see in this video where I needed to press the pedal to get it going. That wouldn't be counted as a disengagement because the system is still active but would count as an intervention since I had to physically do something.
@@BlackTesla As I recall, Tesla TH-camrs always made a distinction between the two: disengagements being a cancellation of FSD for the driver to take over, and intervention being a nudge, like a pedal press. Perhaps it's just semantics. I just thought it was interesting that the more consequential term has apparently been dropped. Thanks for the reply.
Consistently good videos, thank you!
Suggestion:
Let's assume that when YOU drive that same route, of the six check-marks you gave FSD, you would grade yourself at a "10" at each one, because that's how you drive... Could you grade the FSD the same way on a 10 point grading?? - Not just a green check or red X. That way we can see any improvement or degradation and compare the results to "normal' human driver.
Thank you. We used to do a 10 point scale but that was too granular so we went to a 5 point scale. In regards to the regression path we rate pass/fail for each segment rather than granular detail. I talk through thr detail of each one to point out the nuances instead of rating each segment.
Try do a demo on manhattan downtown during rush hour, ok?
Rush hour? That's just tons of gridlock traffic so sitting for hours
12.5.4 Model Y. Still accelerates too strong for me from a standstill. I’d like Super Chill mode. Still can’t read many speed limit signs. Still thinks perfectly clean cameras are blocked when driving in complete darkness. Still doesn’t avoid any potholes or manhole covers. Other than that it’s impressive. Future is bright.

Thanks for your videos. How often do you use FSD on a % basis? It will be good if you invite guests to join you on a ride to give their impressions.
Still waiting for 12.5 on legacy models
I just tried this version on my 2021 model y. It fails to go near the posted limit. So if it’s 45 car will go 40. It keeps braking in small pulses for no reason. It failed yesterday to make a simple right turn where it braked super hard half way through. Lastly it’s still reading junction signs and route signs as speed limits. This update is very bad and I can’t use it
Contrary to what others have said, intervening at 4:50 was absolutely the right thing to do. She was waving at the car coming the opposite direction, who let her cross. She wasn't looking for cars coming the other way and FSD was going to interact with her badly or in the worst case hit her. Good job for noticing and intervening. To people saying otherwise, when you're driving a car, you're a heavy equipment operator. If that's not your mindset, you shouldn't have a license.
Robo taxi?
Every video I've seen the car wouldn't have moved without a human in the car.
He had to press the accelerator right from the start.
That could make for some long waits for a robo taxi.
I thought this drive was great except for when that pedestrian crossed in front of you and you got out of self driving. I didn’t get what was going on. I’d probably have to watch it again.
Pedestrian stepped forward then stepped back making FSD continue forward. Then a car in the opposite direction let the pedestrian go so if I let FSD go, it would 1) Block the pedestrians path causing them to walk around the car or 2) It would stop abruptly for them making it uncomfortable for me
@@BlackTesla Thanks! That’s a tricky little case. Probably what you chose to do was correct even if FSD was 100% perfect. Only so much an AI can do to understand fickle human behavior.
I have had 12.5.4 (HW3) for about 3 days now. With 10/10 only 2 weeks off, I am very curious about what Tesla will have to say. Having watched the FSD improvement trajectory for some time now, it appears to me like the intersection with full robotaxi level is still years away.
Personally I think you are being overly critical of FSD's decision making with regard to that pedestrian. The car needs to both react to some pedestrians but also ignore some, so long as it's not going to hit someone and it's not blocking an actual crosswalk I would just let it do its thing.
It looked fine to me, the pedestrian was going to go behind the car, it definitely saw them the whole time
agree.
Yes, it was FSD just not being overly polite but no safety issues. BTW, in case there is a lot of traffic and pedestrians you will want FSD to be assertive and not stop for such pedestrians - maybe FSD needs to better modify it's behaviour depending on traffic density and maybe it would be good to add "be polite" setting.
does tesla pay for curb damage done by fsd?
No, the responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle lies with the person behind the wheel. Until FSD becomes "unsupervised", this will continue to be the case.
Nice. Still waiting the 10 days for the H3 update, since 8/1. Meanwhile H4 has had 5 upgrades.

FSD is getting smarter, but it does need "occassional" human intervention.
running through big pot holes is for me a no go. But Americans are used more to this... not so in Germany, our "big" pot holes are as big as your small ones. It's just bad for some parts of the construction (in German you have daily used words for sensitive parts of the chassis (axle bearing and ...) of which I even can't find a word in English, neigher in google translate nor in wikipedia)
There is really no reason not to use some form of radar/lidar. If you could add an additional sense as a human driver, that would for one example let you see in the dark, or through fog, you would add it. Why not do that for FSD, allowing it to have better perception than a human driver?
Agreed, it should be far superior than a human not at parity
I was driving by this week and say to myself, wait a minute, it feels like I know this place, but I know I've never been there.

Does anyone know if Waymo dodges potholes?
Think they just use jaguar for good suspension and just don’t attempt to lmao
Im so disappointed in 12.5.4.
Today a car in front of me(about 200meters) was slowing with left turn signal on. FSD kept the speed about 35 and then had to brake hard. If it had simply checked the oncoming traffic it would have known that car would’ve made the turn and allowed us to smoothly continue on.
But it didn’t. It kept the speed until braking hard to a crawl and waited for the car to turn then accelerated on its way. Very very inefficient!! Needs to be better.
What profile, car and location pls
@@BlackTesla im up in Boston. 2021 Plaid.
How is FSD now Compare to the last 4 years? Better? Same? Or Worst?
Bro... you really need to ask ?
Seriously your asking? The improvement over the 3 years I've used FSD is phenomenal. Room for improvement of course but I use FSD every day on every drive now and the comfort level is pretty good. I can still recall my first week using FSD and it was awful back then.
I've had it for 2.5 years now. NO comparison - current version is MUCH better in just about all aspects by miles. If Tesla can just fix that speed decay issue, I would be very happy.... Perfect? No. But it sure is way better than what non-FSD believers make it out to be.
Even though you're the most consistent and analytical of all the TH-camrs and you're entitled to your perspective, I feel like you're totally wrong that the system didn't see the pedestrian, it clearly rendered that person and didn't calculate a likely or even possible collision and since that person was crossing in the middle of traffic it had no obligation to stop.
4:50 she shouldn't be crossing there and most human drivers probably would have just kept proceeding anyway
Whether or not she should have been crossing doesn’t matter. What does matters is FSD being overconfident and not breaking when she crossed.
@@AtomicDreamhumans would have continued and she’d just walk behind
@@MrGiggity890So what, the fact of the matter remains that she was clearly crossing and FSD continued to proceed.
