  • March 21, 2016 - Day 4 of my second Mooney flying adventure to the Caribbean 2nd flight of the day. After spending the day at Beef Island, we got back in the plane to continue to St Martin. It was a fairly straightforward 45 minute long flight IFR to St Martin at 5000ft.
Things got a bit more hectic once handed off to the St Martin controller. There was just one controller working 6 positions at the somewhat busy airport. Clearance, Ground, Tower, Approach, Departure, and Ramp control were all being handled on a single frequency by a single person! This is an airport with 767 and larger jets coming in! My initial calls were going unanswered for the first 10 minutes. When I finally go a hold of approach, I was being some unclear instructions. Still, through the confusion, I made the RNAV 10 approach, flew low overhead spectators on Maho Beach, and landed in St Martin!

This is what general aviation is all about! Had my first flight out of LDJ and now fly out of N07 :)

please remember to lock your wheels with your brakes once you are in the air , before retracting gear, they are spinning in the wheel wells

Terrific underwing view coming over the beach. Just started experimenting with that camera angle myself.

Thanks. To tell you the truth, my gopros tend to overheat and shut off if I mount them on the windows facing out in the summer but if I hang them outside, not only is the view nicer, they get sufficient cooling.

Cute plane, cute wife, cute life :) Your speed 125KIAS (135KTAS) - its your cruise speed? Like m20j faster: 160KTAS on 4500ft?

Hi, do you have any experience/knowledge of the M20K 231? I am looking at the possibility of buying one but the bad press on the "GB" engine, which the one I am looking at has, means I am researching thoroughly!! apparently they run very hot and burn cylinders pre TBO? Maybe I should think about going your route? Have you lost many days to tech issues? Thanks for any advice, safe flying!

Thanks for your input, I am in Europe so hot and high isn't a consideration and the extra maint' is a valid point. It makes sense your model is as much or more than a 231 with similar hours etc. I will pass this time and keep looking. Meanwhile I have to be content with my 105kn Cherokee :) Safe landings and love your adventures!

Shoot for a 252TSE or an encore...the 231 has a manual waste gate and a few other less than desirable traits that make them a handful.
The 252 and encore are still M20Ks just much more refined. Faster, better equipped and easier to fly.

PLEASE STOP with soo many edits!!! Leave shots up for 30 seconds or more. Your cutting it up like its french fries. Other than that, I love your plane and the cool places you fly. Advice from a film maker for you. :)
