Caribbean Mooney Flying #2.2 - Fort Pierce to St Thomas

- March 19, 2016 - Day 2 of my second Mooney flying adventure to the Caribbean. We were supposed to depart Fort Pierce at 10AM but received a EDCT that kept us on the ground till 11. The late departure had us arrive in St Thomas right around sunset after the 7.5 hour long flight. We flew past the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and Puerto Rico to make it to the US Virgin Islands.
We spent time at the beach and visited Coral World in St Thomas.
This video gives a bit of an inside look of what long distance cross country flying is like in my Mooney M20J 201ER.

Excellent video! Good mix of flying and land-side. Loved the cruise ship! Lord knows I've been on enough of those. Your video needs more visual navigation, so we can follow along. Can you show your GPS screen more often? Are you kidding with the salty snacks! Ack! They make you drink . . . and then you know what happens . . . and you have no place to land! Ack! Your wife had a better idea. Eat fruit. The fructose will energize you during long flights. Hey, the birds in the video reminded me . . . where is your bird? Why isn't he along for the trip? Hope you and your wife are having a lovely time at St. Thomas! More videos, please!
+Paul Brown I've given up on "holding it in" a long time ago. I'd rather stay awake, hydrated, and in a good mindset than to avoid drinking and then be most messed up at the most critical phase (landing somewhere far away). I drink gatorade for hydration and iced tea to stay awake. Nuts and little foods keep me busy when there's nothing to do. I guess I was just trying to show the passage of time rather than specific places along the way. Anyway, glad you enjoyed. More to come.

You and your girl got some serious Balls ! flying those distance over ocean in a single engine piston like that. I would like to fly from Miami to St Thomas in a Cessna 208 amphibian with some P&W PT 6 reliability myself.

I would like to ask if the Mooney could do such a 1000 nm trip without refueling if it carries 4 adult males - 800 lbs.

That's what autopilot is for! Those seat slide back far from the yoke, I have a similar mooney.

I'm no pilot. My only real experience was 10 glider flights. One was an emergency, and the Gs were all over the place. There were some loose items flying around the cockpit that were obstructing the instructor's ability to take us safely to land. Surely all that loose stuff on the rear seat of your plane could be fatal if you had a serious moment?

Thanks for noting your fuel consumption & power settings below in the comments. I'm thinking of getting a 201 (attracted by the range, along with many other things), and was also curious of your fuel capacity. It seems 64 gal. is typical, but I thought I'd seen some with 100 gal capacity.

Yeah, 64 is typical for a J. 100 is with long range tanks or later model. Later models burn a lot more gas so 100 for them gives similar endurance as a J with 64. Earlier models take even less gas. If you're the kind of person that never flies more than 3-4 hours at a stretch, standard tanks are just fine. 100 gallons is only good for 1-2 on board and 5-10 hour long flights.
+Parrot Wizard That makes sense, and yes, I'm definitely the type that will get in and want to fly 12 hrs non-stop. LOL Seriously, I'm looking to be able to take long trips and fly all over the world. And 90+% of the time, there will be 1 or 2 in the plane. I'm assuming you have a 100 gal capacity. I've been looking at Js ranging from 1978 to '87. Where do you see the change in "Later Models"? i.e. What range in years will see the kind of performance & efficiency that you're getting? (e.g. I just looked at an '86 whose owner quoted even slightly better numbers. I'm curious though.)
By later models I meant like ovation/acclaim. Doesn't sound like a J is sufficient for your mission though. Model year for Js basically comes down to 77, 78, 84, and 90s. I think anything after 77 is ideal but even a 77J is better than any F or earlier.

Well, when I say "all over the world", I mean something that will allow me to get to most places, even if it's a little "work". (Europe, So. America, Caribbean, etc. : ) 1000 nm range & ~10 gal/hr, @ ~150 kts true, would be doable, so I'm thinking the J would be a great plane, especially for the money. I've really liked Mooneys whenever I've been in them, & it will be nice to join The Club!
So you think those are the preferable years? Just found out the '86 I was looking at was taken off the market. (Owner changed their mind.) But I'm also looking an '80, w/100 gal capacity, & an '84.
Quick question, what is the payload allocated on the M20J 201 with full fuel tanks, also is it common to cruise above 160 KTS?
380lbs and no. It generally pays to cruise slower like 140KTAS. You arrive faster by cruising slower and making fewer fuel stops.
Great Video!!! Got my PPL on a Skyhawk SP, being that its a high wing aircraft & slower lol....what are the handling characteristics from the Mooney being a low wing airplane? I appreciate your feedback! Great Videos keep them coming!! Thanks Again!!
+Julio Alvarez It's fast, snappy rolls, sensitive but stable pitch control. All controls are pushrods rather than cables so they are very responsive to finger tip pressure. I guess high wing is good for sloppy beginners to keep things a bit more stable. But with experience, the low wing is no trouble at all. Low wing is poor for sightseeing and looking at things on the ground. But hey, you're going so fast in a Mooney that there's barely time to look below!

Love your video! Where did you find the yokes for your aircraft? The ones you have in there are very nice.
I don't know if I should admit this but I got "a" yoke done by aerocomfort. The other one is always hidden behind my ipad so I didn't bother.

Looks like a fun trip but lots of water to cross with only one spiny thing up front...... lol Would have prob just rode the airline or Taken a twin

+Parrot Wizard Wow, that's even more than us here in CA. (KPAO) I'm paying $149 for a tie down, but we also have to pay (Real) Property Tax. Yup. CA makes you pay annual Prop Tax on Real Property you don't own (plus a "luxury" tax, AND Personal Prop Tax on the plane). This is for all airplane tie downs and boat slips, owned by a county or city, which most are. But… same deal for me Michael: There are other airpots further away that are $57 - $72/mo., but it just isn't worth the drive. And of course, you are so close to Manhattan, & I'm in the middle of Silicon Valley, so... $$$.

Sure but not too much. I'm more worried about engine out on takeoff from urban Linden airport but nothing that can be done about that. I have life jackets, raft, and plb, low time engine since factory reman. So doing pretty well.

@@happynappy people are not idiots just because they think different. In my opinon not only you ate a lot, most of what you ate is junk food. Fruit, a sandwish and water. Eventually a couple of energy bars, and that´s it! Once on the ground, eat whatever you feel like, an intire bull with french fries or anything else.

100 gallons. No radar but I do have ADSB and stormscope.
That I do have to believe was an awesome flight experience. I did the Turks/Caicos flight coming out of KOPF . I can definitely empathize with your thrill.

It has the Monroy STC that adds another 17 gallons a side.
