Great video as usual Clay. I have several Snap-on 1/4, Matco 3/8,and MAC 1/2 drive ratchets. Can't pick a favorite as they have been very reliable for daily use.
One nice thing about the non-locking Mac is it really holds its position well. It has the outer ears of the flex joint on the head and that seems to help. But after trying out that locking feature, I was surprised how much I liked it.
I tighten mine down super tight so its, basically a locking with all the motion a flex head gives. I like the reg flex heads as there stronger and the connection ears on each side of the flex head on my favorite #Mac are fatter then those on the locking one..
I've got this issue too. I work in a machine shop so rachets aren't usually a consern. I got a snapon torque wrench used and had to have a snap on rachet. Theyre so much higher quality than what I usually use.

As a tech that has both Snap-on and Mac locking flex, and regular flex, ratchets I will say that I started switching to Mac about two years ago and love them.
This is one area I definitely prefer the Snap On. The handle, durability and service I get, on top of the fact that Mac and Matco only stop in if someone at the shop has a loan thru them.
I really like rachets without the comfort grip, i never could get used to them..i hate being where the handle gets in way in tight situations...my hands are my comfort grip..just me..great vid👍
Watching your channel got me to buy and use tool truck ratchets. At first it was all about the price and that stopped me from getting my toes wet. But that didn't last long. When I bought the first Snap-on ratchet and used it all I could say was I like this. When it was all said and done I'm glad I did step up and get some. About a year ago I bought a mac axis 1/2dr. VR1890LFPA I really like that one.
There is a difference “literally” those that day there isn’t have obviously never used or own a tool truck ratchet or jealous of the people that do have them. People can say lots of things about tool truck prices but not much can be said about the quality.
I have a snap on ratchet and several Matco ratchets. Snap on is smoother, but bulkier. That's why Matco gets the nod for me. Yes, locking flex head is the way to go. Mac Ratchets do interest me, can't wait to try one.
I tighten down the hex head bolt on most of all mine. And there super tight. So now I have a stronger and basically a locking head. I prefer the flex heads way more. Just not a locking fan. Snap on I have a channel lock torx screwdriver I put a stubby wrench in the handle and I've tightened it up on both so well it's super nice. Also I can say from Snap on it was more floppy then Mac. I love all my Mac axis 90tooth. Have a bunch.
I love the feel of the Mac ratchet but I did have issues with almost all of mine where the face plate bolts that hold the internals in would shear off after about a year of use requiring a head replacement. I hope that Mac makes a full comeback with better stocked trucks and I will be sold on them for the foreseeable future as far as serviceability and replacement goes!
The only higher end ratchets I own are Gearwrench. To me they are on the higher end but probably not the tool truck guys. I own all 3 flex head 120xp's ratchets and I own all 3 of the 84 tooth locking flex head ratchets. So far they have treated me good. Even though the 120xp flex head ratchet is not a true locking ratchet, they still have a pretty strong detente flex head. It does take a little bit of force to move the head. I still love the true locking flex head ratchets.
If I have to think about head thickness before I pick up a ratchet, it’s gonna get benched as a backup. 15” MATCO works the best in my book......slim locking head and the length is perfect for just about any job
That’s the only ratchet I don’t own I think. I have a bunch of Carlyle tools just not their ratchets. Our store doesn’t have many to choose from, no locking flex heads at all and i don’t remember even seeing a flex head there ?
Koon Trucking They make both, non locking and locking flex head. The locking versions I own are similar to the MAC, no true flex ability. I ordered the majority of my Carlyle ratchets off of Napa Prolink, and had most of them delivered to my shop the same day. Thanks Again Clay.
Bobby Garrett I’ve become a fan of Carlyle tools as well. One of their ratchets I have is the bent-handle, non-locking, flex-head. Unfortunately, I have had the ratchet head move when I attempted to exert some pressure on it. That makes me want the locking flex-head now. The ratchet mechanism is smooth and the comfort grip handle feels good. The ratchet mechanism may be considered “old-fashion” because it’s a 72-tooth design, but it doesn’t bother me and I never gave it any thought when I use it. Maybe Carlyle will offer a locking flex-head in their new 90-tooth design ratchets. The profile of the ratchet head on the Carlyle flex-head ratchets appears smaller. I can’t find the measurements to substantiate it. So, if any of y’all have found them let me know.
Donald Hollums I will check it out, Not sure about 3/8” locking flex head but I currently own one in1/4 and 1/2” versions. I will let you know what I find something out.
I like Snap-on and gearwrench. My problem with Matco is that lots of tools are rebranded gearwrench tools and a bunch of other companies. If you look hard enough you can find out who makes certain tools for matco. The Mac looks cool but need to try it. I personally hate locking flex heads.
Koon Trucking American made using the same head Gearwrench has had for years. Kd tools and gearwrench and matco all used to be under the same roof. Used to be Danaher. Gear wrench was using the head design way before matco. Now gearwrench is part of apex tools and matco still uses the same low profile head as gearwrench. Matco is owned by someone else now. A huge percentage like 80percent of tool sold by matco are white box rebrands with a matco sticker on it. They are an American tools distributor first and for most. It just so happens some of the hand tools like the ratchet heads have the same mold but one is made in American from matco and other in Taiwan. They are a tools manufacturer last. They outsource mostly everything. They all do it. But matco and Mac/Stanley tools seems to have a larger portfolio of clones.
Are the Matco ratchets made in the US? I love Snappy ratchets but it drives me nuts that their locking flex heads don’t have a detent to keep you from bumping the latch out of flex mode.
Matco and Snap On are the only tool truck ratchets I have. Matco is my favorite over all but I have Wright as well as proto from days gone by. Thanks for the video Clay
Koon Trucking cool, I work out of my pickup on lawnmowers on the side and I like getting new ideas from what other people have done, keep up the great work!
Been eyeing one of those new MAC locking flex ratchets. They are really nice. It’s a toss up what I get next though. The rbrt extractors or the ratchet. Decisions decisions. 🤔
Koon Trucking I was thinking the same thing. I live in up in Northwest Pa. Land of the rust. I do a lot of rotted exhaust manifolds so rbrt extractors should be next. Besides I already own about 50 ratchets. Lol.
Helped me decide on the Matco. I didn’t like the snap on locking mechanism either. Matco’s just works so much better for me, not to mention doesn’t bulge out like the snap on
Can't go wrong with any of the three the only thing I've done differently is none be the same length no dubble in different brands at $100 + I don't mind spending that money but once is enough I have all three shown all different lengths
I've had a matco flex 88 non comfort since 09 that I mostly use in unlocked but have snap on non locking flex that needs some viagra. Think its time for snap on to get a different home.
I have snap-on and matco, I prefer my snap on, I’m a small man working in a diesel shop, so I completely trust my 1/2” flex head snappy with a 4 foot pipe on it. Removing head bolts, I’ve never had the ratchet pawls slip even with a pipe on the end of her. I love the matco as well for its slim design, it’s a little lighter than my snap on, and no questions asked warranty.
I have cornwell ratchets and i hate the reverse mechanism. I have starting using pittsburgh pro ratchets lately because they work and affordable with warranty.
Wow...Pittsburg Pro is basically bottom of the barrel Chinese junk and Cornwell in many ways is nicer than Mac/Snap-On/Matco. I guess whatever works...
@@tylermacconnell217 unfortunately the Pittsburgh ratchets didn't last very long. I still use them in my tool bag I keep in my truck. I use silver eagle ratchets now and they are holding up well.
I had the locking flex head snap on ½" drive. I hated it! In a hard pull the lock would pop open and the handle would flex and bang your knuckles on everything
Idk, that mac ratchet really caught my eye. I really like the looks of it. I just looked it up on the mac website and they're out but I did find one on ebay that's new for the same price with shipping as advertised on Mac.
Brilliant video once again, love your channel. Since watching your channel it's made me buy snap on,I've a dealer come round once a week and I've changed 90% of my tools to snap I've spent a fortune but its worth it. My question is what do you think about Carlyle tools? I'm thinking of buying a few things to try,I would appreciate some advice first thank you.. please stay safe and keep reaching
I have a bunch of Carlyle tools, sockets, adapters, wrenches, jacks, transmission jacks, impacts and several other tools. They are great and everywhere you go has a Napa. I don’t own any of the ratchets because our local store only has a very few that are fixed heads. If you watched the impact video we did where we pushed the Milwaukee m18 1/2” to 1400 lbs ft the socket used in the video was a carlyle socket.
I love the snap on ratchet I feel the ratcheting is more smooth in small spaces . The Matco ratchet I like the head is smaller , i don’t like the Mac because the locking head mechanism.
I remember older Matco ratchets used to have a pretty rough gearing and would strip out under high torque and constant use. I guess they’ve improved that issue in the last few years?
I have the Matco and Snap-On locking flex head, but for me the Matco knocks it out of the park. I also have a Napa ratchet that is very similar to the Mac with the button release, not much of a fan of the constant lock.
Matco all the way but still got lots of love for Snap-On.

There is a difference “literally” those that day there isn’t have obviously never used or own a tool truck ratchet or jealous of the people that do have them. People can say lots of things about tool truck prices but not much can be said about the quality.
I'm addicted to ratches boss I got snap on and Mac can you please do tour on what kind tools we need for as diesel tech please
I have some videos if you look back through them
I remember when matco was the m word never spoken of, until Matco Michael started coming around.
@Joe Mcmillan don't forget mr. Joe. He's a nice guy too
So i need these to change the oil is what i gather from this lol
I had that same issue with a1/4” and I normally don’t break ratchets.
Love the Mac axis so far
Me too
Same here the mac axis are my favorite as well
Matco 88 locking head 🎉🎊🎁🎈
Does Mac have a online retailer I would like to buy a 1/2 inch version for work in the refineries
Yes you can buy them online off their website
Ebay should have them too, cheapest I've seen snapon ratchets for example.
Sure can.
www.matcotools.com/catalog/hand-tools/ratchets/
my favorite ratchet is the FLF80A non comfort non locking flex head long handle use it for everything
*MATCO 88* all the way slimmer head design, handle and less clunky than the others. The other 2 Ratchets are HUGE
15” MATCO works the best in my book......slim locking head and the length is perfect for just about any job
i love the locking of the mac i may buy one of those as well hear in the future
I am a huge Carlyle ratchet fan! I own ratchets from everyone except MAC. Nevertheless as always Thanks Clay for another great video.
Yea the locking flex head carlye makes the matcos ratchet head look big the carlyle has a tiny head on it lol they're nice I like both
Donald Hollums I will check it out, Not sure about 3/8” locking flex head but I currently own one in1/4 and 1/2” versions.
Gearwrench doesn’t make Matco ratchets they are American made
Koon Trucking American made using the same head Gearwrench has had for years.
Yes Matco are US made
@@KoonTrucking Thanks Clay. I may need to hunt down a Matco man. :D
Snap-on is my favorite brand, but matco has my favorite ratchet tbh
Matco and Snap On are the only tool truck ratchets I have. Matco is my favorite over all but I have Wright as well as proto from days gone by. Thanks for the video Clay
Mac axis and snap duel 80 are the goat! Matco is like a gearwrench 84t almost
I like snap on ratchets but its the only truck that comes to the shop. I definitely wanna try a Matco and Axis.
Hey klay, could you do a full tour of your guys’ service truck? I think it’d be cool to see what all you’ve got in it
I have it shot just haven’t had time to edit it
Koon Trucking cool, I work out of my pickup on lawnmowers on the side and I like getting new ideas from what other people have done, keep up the great work!
Been eyeing one of those new MAC locking flex ratchets. They are really nice. It’s a toss up what I get next though. The rbrt extractors or the ratchet. Decisions decisions. 🤔
Those RBRT ! You can use any ratchet if you have too but breaking a bolt off..... limited choices that actually give you a real fighting chance ! 🤣
Matco’s just works so much better for me, not to mention doesn’t bulge out like the snap on
that's why I like it better plus head is thinner
I have both the Mac Tools 18 in. Locking Flex and 15 in Matco Locking Flex. Matco for the win
Great video! I have to agree the matco is my all time favorite
Can't go wrong with any of the three the only thing I've done differently is none be the same length no dubble in different brands at $100 + I don't mind spending that money but once is enough I have all three shown all different lengths
I just love ratchets
I've had a matco flex 88 non comfort since 09 that I mostly use in unlocked but have snap on non locking flex that needs some viagra. Think its time for snap on to get a different home.
MAC IS THE BEST
What would you recommend Mac an don't say everything lol
Mac is Stanley.
Since 1980
I used to think that have several Mac tools then I got a couple snap on tools & fell in love
We broke the head completely off one of those ! Snap On man covered it no questions asked
I have lots of different brands to but Carlyle locking flex head rachets are amazing
I just watch these to drool. I’ll never have a tool truck to get a deal. Beautiful ratchets each one. Man can wish.
their cheaper online anyways
Humm?thats odd, i have the 26" 1/2 inch drive snap-on ratchet also, no issues with it yet, thx's for sharing in your comment
Idk, that mac ratchet really caught my eye. I really like the looks of it. I just looked it up on the mac website and they're out but I did find one on ebay that's new for the same price with shipping as advertised on Mac.
I did use my 15 inch MAC to remove a rusty wheel bearing as a sledge hammer. No damage at all, like driving a Toyota on a pass
I'm all the way in Wales United Kingdom I'd love a shout out one day cheers🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Pay attention in my videos! It’s coming !
I love the snap on ratchet I feel the ratcheting is more smooth in small spaces . The Matco ratchet I like the head is smaller , i don’t like the Mac because the locking head mechanism.
I like all of them! 😂👍
Love your videos, very informative
Thank you
clay got all kinds of ratchets 🤣🤣🤣
I remember older Matco ratchets used to have a pretty rough gearing and would strip out under high torque and constant use. I guess they’ve improved that issue in the last few years?
I love mine they are super smooth
I’ve had several since 2008 and they’ve been used a lot and are still perfect.
Not a huge fan of matco typically but their rachets are my favorite by far use them the most
I like the snap on nonlocking flex comfort grip
Have the Mac Axis in 3/8 and 1/4 and a Snap-On 3/8 have to say I prefer the Snap On.
Snap On = over price.....Matco = old school wright tool made ratchets from the 80 and 90 outstanding. Mac = garbage.
I have the Matco and Snap-On locking flex head, but for me the Matco knocks it out of the park. I also have a Napa ratchet that is very similar to the Mac with the button release, not much of a fan of the constant lock.
There’s actual reason to sometimes buy all the options.
The only reoccuring problem I see with Mac locking system is that it will fail first. Especially on high torque applications.
Besides the locking mechanism on the Snap-on. It is the best. Nothing is better in a harsh environment. Have the Matco and a spare set of guts
The locking mechanism on mac flex head will break after awhile and they won't fix it.
