I don't think people understand free markets are about competition, these 3 brands know they have to complete with each other so they're prices are pretty much always going to be close
What I’ve found is most good dealers are willing to tell you when something will be going on promo so you get the best price. Because they buy most of their inventory months before they’re on the truck, They know what’s coming in the flyers months ahead. This is great if you’re in the market for a big purchase.

I agree with most of this except I love my Snap On hammers
I've smashed/destroyed the "capped end" twice, on the 44'' Mac Pry bar. Thankfully my rep was cool and warranted them on the spot. I stick to my snap-on pry bars for extreme hammering.
I was a snap on dealer in the mid 80 took a route that had 3 dealers in 3 years. Got a promotion in 3 years. The guy who replaced me ran it into the ground in 12 months. Service is where it at, everyone I trained and did not make it did not give good service. You’re so right the guy holding the steering wheel is the difference. Snap On the best (disclaimers I’m retired from them) LOL
Absolutely correct ! My father was Snap-on for 35 years and I followed with MATCO for 28 after starting for 2 with Snap-on. During that time of being raised by a Distributor and becoming one I saw numerous colleagues and competitors come and go over 6 decades. Most were short timers done in largely by stinginess. poor service, and contempt for everyone especially customers but there were more than a few successful entrepreneurs who no matter what flag they were operating under had the commonality of liking people in general and being "go to" guys for great service and favors. And some changed flags at least once during their careers. Snap-on is the undisputed leader but at least in my time did have a few rotten apples as well as solid gold minted professionals. The bad were punished harshly while generally the good prospered. Retired now far away but chatting with local tool truck franchisees, not much is different. Good memories, few regrets.
I’ve been a diesel tech for 2 months now. My personal experience is that our snap on guy is definitely about to retire. He barely talks to you, doesn’t want to warranty anyones tools, etc. our Cornwell guy is in his 20s, and has been doing it a few months. He will warranty anything you bring him without blinking. Hell, the other day he helped me find a bad coolant leak on a truck, he talks to you, cuts awesome deals, and works his ass off. I tend to stick with the salesman who takes care of his customer, not so much the product. Snap on is awesome, but I don’t even want to step on the snappy truck with our current guy.
Always go with the dealer that treats you right. All tools break but it always falls back on the man that sells them to stand behind them no matter the name stamped on them.
I just hit a year last week. Snap on did retire. I got Mac and matco into the shop, and I still prefer Cornwell. Mac is a great dealer with great prices. Matco is good but the dealer is very blunt and does not like talking unless you’re buying stuff off of him.
Their isn’t much of a difference in regular prices, but MAC is killing it with this specials in the fliers. I buy so much from my MAC dealer he lets me get flier prices from months ago 😉

I had bought some knipex pliers maybe 25 years ago at the local NAPA store and used them quite a bit. When I noticed that our local Snap-On dealer was selling them I had asked if he would warranty them because the teeth were pretty worn. Told him when and where I bought them, he said let me look at them. Well he replaced them under warranty. Thanks Snap-On!

In almost 20 years in the mobile tool business I quickly learned that probably 20 percent of the people who use tools will break 80 percent of the tools we sold them. Most guys rarely if ever break anything. When a customer’s main focus was “what’s the warranty”? We knew what was coming! We used to joke that some mechanics could break ball bearings with a rubber mallet!
its hard to justify paying tool truck prices for Taiwan and chinese tools. Mac and Matco have a ton of stuff not made in the USA and my snap on dealer still ends up beating their prices on a lot of stuff so it really does come down to the dealer. But if you prefer your tools made in America as i do snap on is definitely going to be your best bet ! Another great video Clay you rock!
You gotta get over the not made in the USA stuff. When every sole in this country picks up a media device that's comes from over seas. No one is beating down the door to make phones,computers etc in the USA. I respect your opinion but thats just facts.
Will Clemons hey i hear you man! but we also dont have a choice with phones because absolutely none are made in the USA. historically these top 3 tool brands have prided themselves on have highest quality American made tools and they are slowly phasing that out. all im getting at is why pay almost the exact same price for chinese tools rather than supporting your own country, own economy while getting a much higher quality tool? or maybe im the crazy one that could also be

Lance Hames yeah i understand that, almost all electric tools are made overseas. once again, if i have the option im going to buy American made tools when the prices as high as they are. snap on has the most American made stuff hands down
@EV Mac has usa made hand tools so does matco and same for cornwell you know why so much influx of asian stuff price newer techs don't give a shit about usa pride only price cornwell was the last of the hold outs but as their dealers special ordering tons of sunex well out came the blue power line the market demands it I prefer usa or european japanese made tools myself and I'm not afraid to spend on them either
To me, it boils down to doing your homework to get the best price, and how the tool feels to you. Personal preference can overrule price.

Everyone in my shop has Milwaukee and they say it’s the best for the brushless impacts, drives me nuts… I need the Matco man to come by, think I’m gonna call him tomorrow and see if he’ll add us on his route… btw in my experience, all the tool trucks who come to my shop literally have the same price and they work together to keep it that way… so your comment about the tool salesperson is very accurate!

I left the shop after 15 yrs. to drive OTR flatbed for 15 yrs.. Since I have been back for the last 4 yrs. it's like everybody want's it cheap and a life time warranty. I have tools from Craftsman, Mac, Matco, Snap On, Cornwell, SK, Blackhawk,Napa, Duralast, Powerbuilt, Lang, OTC, KD tools,and Lisle. I also have no name from India, Taiwan, China, and Spain as well as tools from Toyota, Yamaha, and Suzuki. I don't buy a tool because of price or warr. I buy it because I need it. If it's $10 or $100 & if it works & last it's worth it. If it does not last I through it the trash & move on. I would like to see a video on the worst tools on the truck & the worst tools they have sold. Everybody has to remember what works for you may not work for the next person.

For Mac, Matco, and Snap-on. It's true not a big difference in price. There might be a few tools that may have larger differences in price but for the most part it's even across the board. The only tool truck that has much cheaper prices than the big three is Cornwell. For example I just bought a brand new 1/2 drive Torque Wrench from Cornwell for $250.00. All other Tool Trucks would have been touching $500.00 or more. Cornwell isn't as well represented all over the country when it comes to certain areas.
Snap-On 1/4" is 72 tooth but you would never notice because how good that dual 80 design is.
Here where I'm at, we have mac, matco, snap on and cornwell. Occasionally, we have a gear wrench truck roaming the streets. The mac dealer has told us in the past he will only keep coming regularly if he can sell at least $300 a week at the shop. Their lifetime warranties all differ. Some will just swap tool for tool if they have it, some will rebuild what you bring in and some will send them off for repair and some will only warranty out the broken tool 1 time only. To me (and this is just my own personal opinion) snap on is over rated. Cornwell has never lasted very long, mac is ok but the dealer is kind of a prick, matco has always done us right. I like your videos and look forward to seeing more of them pop up!
Every tool company has its pros and cons. Matco has better ratchets yet Snap on has better wrenches. Some of it is personal preference. For example when it comes to screwdrivers I just buy cheap ones because I just don’t really care- but some people need to have those snap on screwdrivers. So what it comes down to is this- go shopping on all the trucks and handle/inspect the tools and see which ones you like best.
I say that all 4 of the Big Tool truck companies make phenomenal products. The big selling point is the service. I personally have a phenomenal Cornwell dealer. I'm not always crazy about Cornwell, but my dealer is hands down awesome.
My Cornwell dealer has been amazing. He has gotten me what I needed to be at least on par if not capable of growing in regards to needs. He was a former tech so that helps.

Research the ingredients in the steel used. Snap ons materials are far more expensive. There’s a reason most heavy equipment mechanics have snap on sockets.

I do think a lot of tool dealers are missing out on sales to the parts dept of dealerships. I work in parts and I had never even talked to a tool dealer until I went and got on the truck. I have purchased a lot of tools from snap on and Matco. My other guys now also buy tools from them and they leave their fliers in our dept for everyone to check out. Don't forget about the Parts Guys we love tools also.

Good video. I’m a Matco distributor. Your 💯 correct about the value of a good distributor. It’s taken a month just to make a dent in gaining the trust of my Technicians on the route. Previous distributors apparently avoided warranting items.

That was a very good comparison of the different tool truck brands and their pricing. Each one had something that was a couple of bucks less expensive than the other but like you said they were all very competitively priced. Some people are brand loyal and always think their favorite brand is better or a better buy but just as you stated it's the person you are buying from on the truck that makes the real difference in the purchase. My local truck dealers, back when I was buying off the trucks, all generally took care of you when something broke. I can't say that one was better than the other. I've got a good mix of the truck tools because I bought stuff when it was a good buy on sale or a BOGO deal. Most every other mechanic I knew was the same way they all had a box of mixed brands probably for the same reason I had mixed brands. The only difference for me personally was that Amazon was not selling all the different tools so my off truck brands came from brick-and-mortar stores, i.e. Sears, Ace Hardware, Napa, Home Depot.
I have an American made Craftsman 4 drawer tool box likes in front of you. Use to take tools to where I'm working away from the shop. Had to add heavy duty handles to the sides to keep from breaking my back carrying it. Now it's perfect.

My older brother was for many years.
From early on ,I have had a thing for the old stove bolt farm trucks .My first one was a 49. In those days 235 's and 261's where easy to find in feilds ,wrecking yards. Like my brother used to say " Jeff has put to many old farm tractors back on the roads ".
I would find one in a feild with weeds growing up through it ,drag it home and spend weeks scavenging parts from Rio Linda 's junk yards now made famous by Rush Limbaugh. Every truck I did got new S.S. valves hand lapped for unleaded gas. Most of the tools I started out with where second hand or auto parts store stuff that hangs on a hook.
As I made a little money working on freinds and neighbors cars ,I went to my neighbor who had a Snap On Truck.
My first tool truck purchase was 2 clutch head screw drivers. I was hooked. You don't appreciate a really good tool until you have broken loose old rusty bolts and screws from a 40 year old dairy farm truck !
Since 1982 I have bought from tool trucks .
But not so much now, as warranty is good as long as you are buying from the same guy.

Yah, it's 2021 ,I bought it in 1982,I'll just pull that out of my butt. For a guy now 55 that only works on stuff I want to when I feel like it. NAPA Carlyle, and Icon are just fine and I don't have to drive the auto mall looking for a truck I may never see agein.
I miss my old MAC tools guy ,who was the best. Paul gave me his cell number , I'd call ,he'd say I'll be at Joe's garage at 11.00 and he always had what I needed on his truck and would ask if I needed my rachets greased or anything. He would service them 2 times a year just to earn your buisness so most of my tools are Mac. Yet I still have at least 2 drawes of Snap on sockets and wrenches but only 4 Snap on rachets.
So any more ,I rarely even bother trying to warenty anything from the trucks,it has become awkward at best ,because I no longer have a relationship with them.
I still buy the best quality I can find though ,
Some of the better stuff from Taiwan (the more expensive stuff ) is better than the tool truck stuff of 30 years ago ,as computer controlled heat treat has made the more afordably priced stuff better and the higher priced stuff Amazing. Tools have become far tougher to break in my life time.
And what you can buy from non tool trucks is far closer to that level of quality than in the past. Before your options where Tool Truck or total junk ,and that just isn't the case any more.

I 100 percent agree with the video and think it was well done. But in my opinion the biggest difference between the three is the sale flyers. I have all three trucks come by my shop. Mac tools definitely has better sales then the other two. But the day to day non flyer deals I agree not much difference in price.
cornwell has very good promotions and quality is fair in my opinion living in ohio and manufactured in ohio cant beat it. but you already know they are stored in a snap on box lol

Snapon tools are cheaper when they don't put their name on it. At least they leave the original company's name on it.
Our Snap-On guy is mad unreliable, only shows maybe 1x/month and takes FOREVER to warranty things (even if they're on the truck). We all switched to Matco because he would show EVERY week and warranty on the spot (unless unavail). Mac is just Home Depot on wheels, mainly for lube techs...
i buy snap of for my ratchets but just about everything else i own is mac. i get crazy good prices and deals every time. just makes me want to give my mac dealer more business!

Mac has the best deals IMO, such as that badass wrench deal they do a couple times a year. It all really boils down to your main point: the dealer. If you got a good dealer, you’ll buy more. I’ve seen dealers that have terrible stock, don’t show up regularly, take forever to get your order (not just once or twice), and takes weeks to warranty your stuff. I’ve bought stuff that I didn’t really need, but it was a decent tool and I liked the dealer n

When I first got started 25 yrs ago people kept going on and on about Snap On being more expensive. I compared to Mac and found that the prices were very similar.

Side note: When Snap On is a little more expensive I've noticed (sometimes) that there is an added feature or premium feel/look.

That's funny cause that's exactly what happened to me. Our Matco dealer switched to gear wrench. But I got all 5 trucks coming here. Snap on -mac-matco-cornwell-gearwrench. My cornwell guy is awesome and probably has the best prices.
Been watching for a while now, can get any tool from matco n mac from there website, but my snap on guy gets 80% of my business as he's there almost every week, stopped going on the matco truck, never has any tools on his truck. One thing I've noticed is Mac seems to be running way better sales and bogo offers more often, would love to have a Mac guy. And yes Amazon definitely has a place for my tool shopping needs, those seldom used but needed items where it doesn't make sense to pay tool truck prices. Actually you are wrong. Snap On At4101G 37.75$ . When comparing between the 3 major truck brands the prices are usually close.

Are mac truck is off the charts for price snapon is middle of the road but service is awesome and matco is the cheapest but I find the tools to be cheaper built as well so for us snap on is the way to go
I agree with you 100%, but there isn't underdog in my opinion. I have all three of those tool trucks. My snap-on dealer is unreliable with warranties most of the time in which not warranty certain items out being extremely picky about it. He also doesn't offer very many deals at all, charging full retail consistently. My Mac guy is my favorite. He gives me good deals consistently and always backs up his product. I've never had an issue with a warranty for my Mac guy, and even in events where it's past the factory warranty he will take it home and fix it himself if he can. He's the man! Maco on the other hand is the underdog by selling less Superior tools across the boards. I've never had very much luck with matco tools. They seem cheap and flimsy break all the time. In my opinion the only tools they have that are superior to the other two are air tools. They're silver eagle line of tools and all air tools in general for my experience are excellent! Other than that though maco is garbage.
I have three tool trucks. Snap-on, Mac, Matco and I usually base what I buy on design so if one brand has a better design or a design I like better then I will buy the one I feel is best. I wish we had a Cornwell truck though because I like their stuff and hate buying online.

In my opinion I'm not worried about who is cheaper I'm more worried about who shows up every week in my case it's snap on the other tool trucks show up once every 6 to 8 weeks
My tool truck doesn't have wheels... they just call it a "store." I'm not even sure if it's got an engine.
No reason on earth that a prybar should cost 75 bucks. No way, unless it was made with magic. The same machines and processes used to make that prybar in the US were used to make prybars in Taiwan, and they'd be practically identical outside of ergonomics.

I’m not married to one brand ... I like my Matco guy .. however he has interest in three out of the four trucks on the island I live on .. so trade ins or ups are almost impossible ... I own lots of snap on but only certain items I like or are superior ... I’ve been trying to find the Mac guy but I think he retired because the interweb is not throwing a number ...I do try to buy from the fliers .. people don’t Evan know how hard it is to live on an island everything has a mark up and rock auto doesn’t Evan ship to Hawaii ...
Keep in mind if you only have 1 dealer bargains are usually only in the flyers have several different dealers coming around they strive to come up with their own pricing and specials I'm fortunate to have all 4 big brands where I'm at

Not a huge difference in price until you get to sockets and wrenches. Then there is a huge difference in prices.
Clay so the Lang test leada are $16.38 on Amazon. If I have a dealer that treats my shop like your dealers do you. Then the small price difference is worth it. But if the dealer is not reliable. Then im going another rt. Im the type of person that when im ready to do business. I dont wanna hear a bunch of excuses. I dont like to wait, and keep me informed if its gonna take a lil longer than what you told me.

Im a mechanic in south ms and i think it all depends on the person in the tool truck. You can talk any of them down and never pay asking price unless ur just not that smart. This is an owner that has money to blow obviously.

our tool trucks always have a love hate relationship. If i ask a price its a little high ask to knock another 10/20 off if they dont then ask the next truck. we all have family's to feed. i personally buy what i like better, mac ratchets (usa) are top notch, but prefer the snapon sockets but buy both depending on the set and deal

Funny cuz seems to be Mac and Snap-On at the shop but no Matco. Would be nice and yea the RBRT are MARVELOUSLY AWESOME
Snap-On: Higher level techs, flagging lots of hours, already have all tools - $$$$
Matco: Med/all techs, all flag hours, good reliability - $$$
Mac tools: Just go to Home Depot... lube techs only -$$
Sad part is Matco doesn't make any of their own tools, they only rebrand them. Unless it is a toolbox or a roll cart, quality control is up to the Taiwan company that made the tool. Kinda sad especially for the price they charge for it. There are a lot of companies now that sell the exact same tools for far less money.

Buy once, cry once is my motto. I'm hard on tools and I want a warranty to stand behind them so I begrudgingly but mostly snap on. Grinding wrenches flatter for a specific task, shaving a bit of the head of a ratchet too get into an extra tight spot making my own stubby wrenches etc. Cornwell is by far the worst when it comes to warranty I've dealt with. I've got more unwarrantable broken "Cornwell" tools than you can shake a stick at. I've had three different dealers through the years and they all sucked at warranty. And one big one they shared was... If a dealer asks the question did you buy it from me and it's got their name on it, that's the wrong answer. Not to mention my current Cornwell dealer refuses to pull tools from the shelves to warranty an item under any circumstance. Even if you need it asap. I don't expect this service every time but if I say it's important that I have one at all times, and you know you ain't putting in an order for another week, plus another week to get it, and another week after that before I see you... work with a guy every now and again. It's nothing, even before the shortages, to wait upwards of two months for a tool from my current Cornwell dealer. I've had two matco dealers and one asked me the who did you buy it from question and the other "couldn't" warranty an item. Other than that they were fairly middle of the road. My biggest turn off for me personally was I hated their ratchets. Oddly enough, I've never stepped into a Mac truck because I've only even seen one once when I was traveling, but I wouldn't mind if we had one. I love some of their tools I've got to play with. Snap on has literally never turned away a warranty as long as there was a warranty on it. Even in cases of clearly had been abused. I don't warranty heavily modified tools but barring that I've never had an issue. There were times when I got the look of are you kidding me... How.... But I've never been turned away wanting. Not to mention my buddy's stream light took a dump on him. A warranty item. He had got it from Cornwell and he wouldn't warranty it. Snap on came same day an hour later and dude told him the situation and our snap on guy just swapped him out a whole new flashlight knowing full well he didn't even buy it from him. Im not trying to just bash everyone but snap on, but to me customer service is a tie for my number one priority along with quality. And the free swag you get like the hats shirts and stuff don't hurt much either. And MOST snap on dealers have all that in spades.

Well hopefully you realize Cornwell is the smallest of all the tool truck brands and from what it appears those numbers are shrinking yearly
I came to the same conclusion that you are stating today. The person that sale the tools make a huge difference. 26 years in the industry of repairing heavy equipment's and light truck's. Moving from 5 different employers in different regions I have deal with many tools dealers from same brand. Not a lot but some tools truck person are in the wrong trade but from my experience most of them are fine and stand behind their product more than the corporate entity. I would like to advise every one to take the time to built a relationship with their tools dealers, pay your bill in time: be wise how you spend your money, avoid impulsive purchase and high truck account balance. I am from Canada and I have only access to Snap-On and Mac Tools truck.... Back in the days we were having Herbrand tools but it is a long time gone!!! Matco has some dealers in Ontario province of Canada but I do not stay in this area.
I have a snap on guy at the Toyota dealership I work at. I have a good friend who’s a MAC dealer. I had an awesome Matco dealer at the last shop I was at.
They're all too expensive but since being in my field. Mac is the cheaper of the big 4. Snap on has gotten to gimicky for what they normally sell. I only deal with Mac,Cornwell. Like you say the tool is only as good as dealer.

Matco has better prices on speciality tools (all my specialty tools are matco), Snap on has better prices AND better tools when it comes to hand tools(all my ratchets, sockets, wrenches, and screwdrivers are snap on) , but I don’t have a mac truck

I ordered some matco stuff but the dealer just stopped coming and didn't answer any phone calls, so I'll stick with snap on and mac. Also the Cornwell dealer still keeps in touch after I moved down the street to another job and he always has sales. I think cornwell is the cheapest I've seen.

That was a very good video. Glad you took the time to do your homework. I have to be honest I really don’t feel that bad buy all Snap-On because the price among the big three were fairly competitive. I guess it shows just buy what you like.
I pretty much buy snap on or harbor freight. It’s a good combo.

Just for giggles try getting a craftsman tool warranty. Even went to a Sears store, couldn’t get one socket replaced.
All matco and Mac are rebranded.. for instance, matco pry bars are Mayhew.. they do not manufacture tools... Snapon does manufacture tools, so at least your buying a tool (mostly) made by the company who's name is on it.
i buy online. Snap on always warranty the tools i broke, I call them up they always replaced them or fixed without a lot questions. I thought about buy Matco because of the cancer. My mom died from cancer
I had a 3/8 snap on ratchet with a army green plastic handle and absolutely loved it but when it broke and my snap on man wouldn’t show up regularly anymore I realized I shouldn’t have went away from my Matco man

The only problem with tool truck's is after being in the business for 25 years I had to retire now the tools truck's won't warranty tools even if your able to catch one. And you wonder why harbor freight is looking better for some people.

We only have mac and snap on trucks. I'm a snap on guy because when I first started my career, snap on let me get the tools without a down payment. That way I could make a living. Matco wanted a down payment.
I've thought about getting a matco truck since there isn't one out here.
Gearwrench has tool trucks now. Went on one and it was pretty cool
I have items that I prefer from this or that brand but I normally will compare prices and then ask Snappy to beat the lowest price

i have a mac and snap on dealer, i wish i had matco. matco has oakley glasses and those awesome hyper step drill bits. i like variety. i don't worry about price, its all pretty much the same and the difference isn't ever too crazy. what comfort grip ratchet feels best in my hand?, thats the kind of stuff i worry about. i typically only buy tools that are on sale, so i'm always looking through the flyers and seeing who has the best price for me this month.

The system in the truck can verify if the individual purchased it from said “manufacturer” if I’m not mistaken.
It can tell if it was purchased off the tool truck. Every purchase is recorded under the person that paid for them.
I just wish they’d allow the tool trucks to sell outside of their routes in terms of DIY home consumers. Now they most likely won’t be buying $12000 scan tools or anything but the oddball tools that you can do without yet life is so much easier with, would be so worth it and they’d have the lifetime warranty access.
I think you should have done a socket and wrench comparison. I lost an 8mm 1/4 drive swivel from my snap on set. Replaced it last week, 61 bucks plus tax. That was hard to swallow. I'm 70 years old and have a variety of tools. Been wrenching since I was16. I have expensive and inexpensive stuff. I bought a gear wrench 1/4 drive swivel socket set just as a backup because it was on sale for under 50 bucks (i think they're 6mm to 15mm). Now I know it's not the best quality, but they work pretty damn good and you probably won't break them that easy if you use them as intended, not using them where a 3/8 would be more appropriate. But 61 bucks for 1 tiny f'n socket. I'm glad I'm retiring soon.
