- Recorded December 23, 1990. All music and instruments by Dave Grohl. Pocketwatch is a cassette album by Dave Grohl, under the pseudonym Late!, released in 1992 on the now defunct indie label Simple Machines as part of their Tool Cassette Series. In the summer of 1991, Dave Grohl went into WGNS Studios and recorded four songs, playing all the instruments himself. The recording was combined with six songs from a previous Upland Studios session recorded in late 1990.
Dave's early songs, from Pocketwatch to the Self-Titled FF album, were the best.
Yea it had feeling
in 98 dave witnessed a train hit ... and recorded or re recorded this album to form
but pocketwatch was a cassingle and finally appeared in nirvana IV which never went platinum
yet
but they've been playing this since the nevermind tour
You can hear how being with Kurt had a HUGE influence on his singing and song writing.
Tbh. I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but once Dave moved away from this huge Kurt influence towards his earlier influences again (Led Zeppelin and other older bands), his songs became worse.
How
@@briancannon3987 lets see, soft verse then loud chorus, use of acoustic guitars just to start.
Cant say i heard either of those in Scream.
@@mainlander3920 100%
@@gregrohsful Scream was basically the first band he was in, and 'just' a performer at that. His sensibilities as an artist were probably influenced by Nirvana to some extent, but good portion of what we hear is purely him, and that's demonstrated by what he brought to Nirvana, comparing Nevermind to Bleach
When I think of Foo Fighters I think of this sound.
Foo fighters suck
@@gc5907 first album was pretty good though. Wish they would have stuck more this type of sound
@@reidflemming8458 hopefully they turn back to a more darker, punk rock sound, wasting light was pretty solid in 2011 but everything since has been pretty bland imo
@@DevinLatulippe I’ve heard a few newer ones that were pretty heavy but overall I agree. Seeing them live was pretty crushing too. Bunch of jocks and shit lol
@@DevinLatulippe Saint Cecilia EP? I thought it was solid
This was actually recorded in March of 1994 after Dave returned from Europe to take his mind off of what had happened. It's very well documented.

@@somedaysometime Mayo all the way
😂😂😂😂
Kurt died in April. Your timeline doesn’t line up.
I hate how Dave had always said in interviews that he couldn't play music for years or someshit but has played and recorded right after Kurts death dude just exaggerates too much and lives off that shit
@@spencermcmillin6315 he overdosed in Rome and the tour was canceled. Lol
Dave unconsciously aquired song writing skill when he lived with kurt ..he said that he would hear kurt making songs in his room for hours ..
Mountain Dew, mountain dew, mountain dew. Great song never heard this gem until now
Thanks, now I can't listen to this without hearing about the refreshing beverage mountain dew, find it at your local grocery store
🎵 Mouuuuuntaaaiiiin Dewwwwww 🎵
😂🤣😂
Dave's music always had that distinct tinge to it
I agree with the comment talking about the legit Foo Fighters sound. I can't accurately describe what it is, but it's so baked in the alternative scene. You can hear this turn commercial most on The Colour and the Shape: "Monkey Wrench," "Hey! Johnny Park," and "My Poor Brain" all have this unique sound. At the heart of it is Grohl's unpolished, untrained vocals and hardcore punk sensibilities learned from the way Kurt crafted his songs firsthand. It's undiluted from the pursuit of big, bombastic arena rock that band currently is on (not that there's anything with that, In Your Honor kicks ass). It's Dave's mental sound totally unfiltered.
I agree, the early raw stuff is ground breaking. It was so exciting to watch them evolve from the hard-core punk roots to the biggest commercial rock ‘n’ roll band of our time. Way to go Dave
Some songs off their third album had that quality too
At this time he didn't realize just how big he would become with the Foo Fighters. This is very cool!
He's so good! This guy should be in a band called fighting the foo or something
Yeah they should call it UFO Fighters 🛸, if only there was a shorter way
this joke is so lame and on every video of dave grohl so corny
@@revalone3944 k.
Good joke dumb ass
@@southprodigy UAP Fighters?
Killer Track.
Foo Fighters have never been as good as that afterwards. Period.
As usual, like Nirvana, I love that simplistic raw 8 track sound Kurt always talked about in his journals. About as punk as you can get 😁
God, this stuff and the first two FF albums are so much better than everything since.
haven't followed foo fighters much but from what i've heard this would be a preview of their style.
I suggest listening to their first two albums, their first being self-titled and their second being called "The Colour and The Shape". Really great stuff.
This is a great song!!!
Best quality of the song is this one
Essa música sim deveria está em um dos discos do FF
This is really good. Sounds a little Nirvana like. In a good way. I thought Kurt and Dave's voices blended really well together. (I know Kurt's voice isn't on this)
Pocketwatch and the self-titled Foo Fighters album were very much inspired by Nirvana. I'll Stick Around, Alone + Easy Target, Winnebago, Wattershed, Mountain Of You, Exhausted, This Is A Call, Colour And The Shape, could all be made into Nirvana songs had Grohl given them to Cobain.
Exhausted and Alone + Easy Target would probably end up in a Nirvana record if Cobain were still alive. Grohl and Cobain could have been the next Lennon-McCartney... If only...
@@OtavioFesoares I’ve been saying that since ever since I’ve been a diehard Nirvana and Foo Fighters fan. They literally could’ve rivaled Lennon-McCartney. Cobain was taken too soon. It would’ve been amazing guaranteed if they wrote more together
I fucking love this
Nirvana Dave will always be best Dave.
Good thing he's evolved. Unlike Nirvana fans.
@@Lightner445555555555 Saying Nirvana fans haven't evolved is a retarded blanket statement that doesn't make any sense. There are Nirvana fans who fought in wars you and I weren't alive for and Nirvana fans that haven't started middle school yet, from all over the world.
Dave has become the epitome of a safe, corporate *Rock and Roll™* star. It's lame. He's more akin to someone like Bon Jovi or Axl Rose these days. He doesn't need your white-knighting, so you don't have to polish his pole so diligently in youtube comments.
I look forward to your valuable and insightful response.
@@AmericanLibra Lmao grow up Dave did he can't be a 22 year old punk rocker forever things change and people change Kurt would probably been the same way had he made it outta of his 20's
@@kevenrowe2958 Jimmy Page is still Jimmy Page. Dave Grohl is gluten-free diet Dave Grohl light.
@@AmericanLibra this is what he means by nirvana fans never evolve because it’s like you guys are still stuck in 1994 . what you said made no sense at all. Jimmy page is jimmy page cause he still plays the same music and hasn’t been in a real real musical act since 1980. Grohl moved on with his life and call it what you want the guy makes Great music and been one of the few acts trying to keep rock alive. Like he gets shits cause he didn’t wanna be an angst fueled punk rocker for. The rest of his life. Like get outta here
I can only listen to FF 1st album & the demo's before it, maybe 3 or 4 from the 2nd album, but all the rest since sounds contrived to me
Late and the first Foo songs are amazing and heavy.

Sometimes I think the Foos would have existed even without Nirvana.
Fr, I think this guy's talent would just come crashing in one way or another
what a great song !!
So freakin good.
Yeah love it
The verse is clearly inspired by the song "Mean Mr Mustard", Beatles! The chords (not all of them of course) are quite similar as well. Good at one, Dave!
Was thinking the same thing! Makes sense, as Dave (and Kurt) were big Beatles fans. This is great!
Not really, no.
I don't hear that at all
This touches my heart. Thank you Nirvana 😊🙏 oh holy mother of... the Music God's of.. This is something I don't know. 🤯
0:20 Kurt reads the paper and the title on both sides of the paper reads: 'Bloody Maker'
Maybe the frontpage actually says: Melody Maker
And there’s a picture of Courtney in the bottom right. Woah
Good song I like it.
Sounds really good.
Dave is one of the coolest guys in Rock music. No surprise he got along with Lemmy
Thanx for the video
Whatever the case maybe, Its a great demo. Love it !
Pure lovely grunge😘
AMAZING!
Damn...this is good.
Awesome song
His voice reminds me of Elliott Smith here. (In the verses anyway)
Has a Heatmiser vibe to it
Elliott Smith and Neil Gust
If Foo Fighters were grunge
Got a taste at that with the first album
What's grunge?
This was recorded at The Laundry Room in March 1994
the vocal melody in the verses sounds like 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window' (i think that's the one? maybe 'Mean Mr. Mustard'?) off The Beatles 'Abbey Road'.
Épicooo
Good Gawd folks!!! Yer all 👉👌'd about "timelines" & the TWO Demos in question! Pocketwatch or the other similar Demo (both having mixed up tunes), was recorded BEFORE In Utero/Kurts Murder or Foo🛸 demo as well! Thee Foo Demo came out post Kurt & time off. That's why a couple Pocketwatch tunes appeared w/Nirvana. He played everything on 1st 2 Foo Albums, grabbing Seattle's Sunny Day Real Estate & PatSmear/ GERMS,😮 as his band. I hung w/Dave at thee 1st/Debut Foo Gig at Portland's SATYRICON, where ALL Local Bands & Friends bought up the 250-300tix, bc the "Bidding War/ Big Wig Execs" couldn't even get In & had to listen... OUTSIDE! LOL! GOODTIMES! P.s. the od in Italy happened w/pills & champagne, unable to get the Horse he hadn't a problem w/prior to that HOLE! Cheerce, HELMET and TAD'S Ole' drumtech. Nuf said. In doubt? See TH-cam clip of Dave Grohl pays tribute to Dead Moon. Yup, that'd be me on the JumboTron, bc my 90's Industrial band @Hitting Birth opened up for Nirvana on NYE'90~'91! THIS Demo was the Summer after that. Mmmk? 💋
The drum fill at 2:45?? Buttery...
Cool❤
“Mountain View” recorded 1994
Best song by dave grohl ive heard, not really keen on his popular stuff
This is giving me Mean Mr. Mustard vibes haha.
isn´t in pocketwatch
Bruno Ernesto its a bside
??? For what? I don't think it's a B-Side to anything.
Its neither pocketwatch or a bside
Dave was born with a "gift" that I fear has now been quieted forever, from the loss of his "other flame" Taylor Hawkins.
Good thing u were wrong!

Fuck this is good.
Does anybody know whats that song that lightly plays on the backround at like the first three seconds of the video?
Great song and Dave Sings it really well. Would love to have heard Kurt having a go at this. And quite a few of Daves songs. Imagine Dave moving onto guitar. Sharing lead vocals/guitar with Kurt and obv a new drummer. Chad Channing for example 🤷 Now that would have been something.
And I'm 15 again.

3:00: I thought he was singing "Mountain Dew".
For someone that said he didn't know why Kurt sang like he had gravel in his voice because he had a great singing voice is totally attempting to steal Kurt's Style here

this isn´t in pocketwatch
but fuck it

Totally same vibe tho.
exactly lol
You said but fuck it. Lol
Reminds me a bit of that AIC song... got me wrong
And then he never sang again. The end.
🤘
I wish Dave and Courtney would sing for nirvana and tour.
What is this? It isn't listed as a song from Pocketwatch.
This song has some Mean Mr. Mustard vibes on the slow parts
Man I thought the same thing and checked to see if anyone could here it as well.. 100% mustard especially the keeps a 10 bob note up his nose part.. Well played sir 👍
@@psychedelicprawncrumpets9479 Dave is huge Beatles fan, he learned to play guitar to a Beatles song book! I had heard this song before but I only listened to Abbey Road recently :)
Sounds kinda Foo fighters, Nirvana and even Alice in Chains.
"Mountain of Poo"
This sounds like an Elliott Smith outtake from Mic City Sons
Coal Chamber's song Big Truck, Nirvana's songs Hairspray Queen & Mexican Seafood & this song have truly weird guitar solos. Not complicated, not difficult, WEIRD. Berkeley can teach you theory, they can't teach you weird.
Great distinction, Berkeley will not teach you weird or how to sound interesting.
@@curmudgeon8 they can teach you how to master the mechanics of music, which can greatly help songwriters who have a great imagination. I'm not knocking formal training, just saying some things can't really be taught.

This is fucking awesome. Dave fucking Grohl’s a genius. He can play a lot of instruments same with me
*BREAKING NEWS* - Foo Fighters have announced that Blink182 drummer *Travis Barker* replaced the late Taylor Hawkins.
lol no
This song feels like Marigold
I just cant get into Dave's music it's so generic and his singing is so weird. But I know he's made a good career so obviously people like it. Just ain't for me, a little too boring
I'm a big conspiracy theorist. Ok so. Does anyone think he had Hawkins boy "suicided"?
It's possible, do you think the current Grohl is the same as early Dave, the guy singing here? It's pretty clear to me that the physical traits are different, as well as mannerisms and singing voice. Look around 2001-2003 and you'll see a sudden change.
Nobody with more than 3 braincells thinks that
It’s like nirvana and the Melvin’s had a baby
