Two things I see happening with math taught in school: 1. So many different strategies taught at the same time is confusing children. 2. Some tried and true ways to solve math problems (that we learned) are being thrown aside, never to be taught again with no proof that the new way is better. This sounds like a video how to make the job of the teacher easier
Can you explain what you mean and your experience in this area?
Hi, I hope you're doing well! I wanted to check if you’re looking for a video editor and thumbnail designer for your TH-cam channel. I'd love to help enhance your content and visuals. Let me know if you're interested! Best regards,
Can IXL be used for high school (how about credits)?
Welcome! What other ideas can you think of? Which ones of these have you been practicing?
I almost didn't graduate high school and went to college at a much later date. I was determined to be successful in college so during the time I designated for reading I listened to ocean wave soundtracks (nothing too monotone, but that had no words), and I used the Forest app to lock my phone and keep me accountable. Reading happened in 30 minute blocks and I often ate mint patties because peppermint is thought to stimulate the brain. Idk if that's true but I read every textbook I bought and graduated with honors.
Wow! Impressive. We just have to find out what works for each of us!
As a teacher of thousands of kindergarteners, it’s obvious who is not ready to learn to read or write by the stage of coloring they’re in. Kids need miles of scribbling, then drawing between ages 2-5 to be at this point. School can’t make up what parents didn’t provide or encourage- time to do this “work.” The child develops the connection between eye-hand-brain at his/her own tempo. It’s a long inside job that can’t be rushed or skipped. Otherwise school will be hard for them and you don’t know why. Color every day. From a State Teacher of the Year
Thank you for adding to this! I know some folks would love to hear additional ideas if their kids do not like coloring. For my middle son, in addition to coloring with him, I printed off coloring pages of things he was REALLY into and used half sized crayons as he struggled with pencil grip. Kindergarten, in my opinion, is the most difficult grade to teach (because, as you stated, they are coming from SO MANY different backgrounds). What do you think of schools that offer a K-1 class as another transitional year after Kindergarten?

How old is the girl? My son just turned 6. So want to gauge his progress.
This is when she was in first grade and she has a Nov. birthday, so she is older in her grade and had lots of exposure to reading being the third child in a homeschool environment. Many first graders aren't *quite* to that level at that point in the year so it should be ok as long as you are moving forward in progressing.
Thanks for explaining the Orton-Gillingham. I’d like to have access to the pdf syllables but it is not available
Thank you for creating this excellent video. I tried accessing the links to your website in the description. But I get a message that says "website expired."
This showed me how behind my son is in reading. I really got start working with him more.

Thanks for this video, I was helpful. I am English and when you did your British accent I spat my coffee everywhere! 😂
Your series of videos on how to teach read
I like that you said a parent/teacher can spark interest in learning by presenting it in different ways! I will keep that in mind to any children I might be tutoring! Thank you!
I am watching this now, and the links have all expired. please help.
I know this video is old but is there any way you can repost the guide to help a child read?
PM me on the facebook page, and I will help you. Go to The Parent Teacher Bridge.
hmmm im assuming you escaped the mental asylum if im not wrong
I think you're under 18....or you were when you used IXL. Someone abused the use of it with you. I'm so sorry. It's like Accelerated Reader. There can be some good things about it, but the schools have not used it effectively and it's turned kids off.
A lot of the links in the parentteacherbridge were not working.
safety item: how to identify a “safe” adult if they become lost in public (mom with kids, store employee, police, etc.) and what to share with them (I lost my mom, her name is ___, her phone number is ____, I last saw her _____, etc.)
Great idea!
My dad was left handed and only one of his 8 children is left handed. Unfortunately it was in that push to force everyone to perform right handedly. He is pretty ambidextrous now(in his 50's.)
My child cries in school missing me. How do i teach him not to miss me?
Thank you!! Would this be more where your child should be towards the end of first grade? My son is a may baby (currently 6) and we are just starting first grade this upcoming school year.
I believe I said in the video she is probably advanced for that time.
It says around minute 2 that this is a first grade passage and that there are multiple sub-levels within first grade because kids grow so much.
Top right corner says it's level E
@@TheParentTeacherBridge ok I understand that! the resources you shared are definitely helpful! seems my son is at level B
My daughter flunked KINDERGARTEN. They don’t seem to be learning days of the week, calendar, weather, shapes, etc. She’s expected to write FULL sentences, count to 100, decompose numbers, and know 150 sight words! My poor girl now hasn’t had a great start with academics and doesn’t seem excited anymore.
I'm so sorry to hear that. It is true they do NOT let parents know this soon enough. Most children are capable of doing those things IF the parents know in advance. If the parents trust they will learn letters and sounds DURING kindergarten...then it gives them a late start. It would have to be a public campaign or something they advertise at the pediatrician's office so that parents know. I do not rely on the government for my children's education. My children joyfully learned to read without pressure. Public schools are set up like factories, and if you do research the history behind them, the big guys that owned the factories and had a stake in them heavily supported the idea of public schools as we know them because they needed factory workers. I urge you to look into homeschooling, a method that will fit your family (there are different ways depending on parent schedules)
They're supposed to know the basics before kindergarten. Counting to 20, shapes, colors, days of the week, reading, etc. You or your preschool failed your child, not the kindergarten.
No she did not song she just needs to go through it again because she's not ready and that's okay make sure she knows it's okay and sometimes people need a little more time
I am so sorry! Thats so sad! One of the true tragedys of this nation and out education dept! one of the reasons we are so far down on the education in the world! So many kids lose that zest for learning because its so hard that young all day to it and try and focus and remember everything! Then learn all the new information! Do you know Finland ( not sure if they still are) were top 3 in education! Because even though yes kids did start school around 5ish but not like our schools they played and learned how to get the social aspect down and learned through play and sclience like watching butterflies and learning about dirt by digging and things like that formal learning didnt start till age 7! And alot of Eureapeon countries like Germany dont even start any history classes till 6th grade! my kids started k=getting so bored! Learning the same thing in elementary! Try and be encouraging and find ways to make it fun and something she can enjoy! Good luck!

My daughter is failing in her grades and its really stressing me out....shes very much on her phone and shes not even making an effort in away to improve 😢😢...
@@misscabbydahir.GodsDaughter I’m so sorry to hear this. For the addiction reason (and also to avoid ideologies and porn) my 15 year old does not have his own phone. When he gets access to one, it won’t be his. It will be ours that he is borrowing for an event. I do not think much good comes from them. You are the parent and reserve the right to ground her from the phone if needed. Accept that role. It will be tough--oh, yes, tough!! But, if she can do better then you need to show her that you believe in her and free her from that addiction.
We liked IXL a lot in the beginning but the harsh grading system became more and more of an issue for our kids. We opted for other options and have tried out various resources. One that we really like is Beestar. They have really great math and reading problems and lots of great options for the kids to practice with.
Great job, Everly!
I think to home school my son

Wow I am over 50 and I remember my 5th Grade teacher teaching us how to break the words down.
How to make a friend and show empathy!!!!
Great idea! I think I was on the academic mindset when I made this.
It seems to me that some children understand things perfectly well, yet cannot explain them verbally. For instance, with oral communication, my adult nephew with Down's Syndrome has VERY limited verbal abilities (less than 50 words), yet he clearly understands and can act upon very complicated verbal instruction. I wonder if its a mistake to assume that a child isn't understanding their reading simply because they don't know how to reply to comprehension questions in the expected way.
Most of the links that are parent-teacher bridge do not work anymore
Let me know what you need, and I can try to get it to you. Otherwise, yes, I know.

Thanks for the video and sharing the free K5 resource. I'm teaching my 5 year old to read. We are homeschooling, so I guess level isn't as a big a deal... but at what point are kids supposed to be on 1st grade level? Is it when starting first grade or at the end of 1st grade?
Isn’t floor a bossy r?
You'll have to remind me what part you're talking about. It's been a while since I made this, and I can't sit and watch the entire thing to find the part to which you're referring. Thanks.

Thanks for this video. It really helped me understand my daughter’s reading. Turns out she is doing good in her reading. I cannot wait to show her this video. Also, thanks for the helpful info and resources.
