Teach a lefty to write numbers (Lefty #3)

  • How to teach a left-hander to write numbers. As a lefty, mother of a lefty and grandmother of a lefty, I've shown the most widely used method. Not ALL lefties will write the same way, as all righties do not. Many lefties who were taught by right-handed people will write as they do and without a problem. Just let your child explore their preference. #3

      Oh my goodness...you're welcome! I made them quickly and spur of the moment because a subscriber had asked for help with her son.

    This video just changed my life. I'm 27 years old, naturally a Lefty and used to write like this as a kid. Then as I got older I began being taught to write letters and numbers like a righty or just picked up righty habits by watching my right handed classmates.

    Thank you, I just subscribed. My daughter is 5 and a leftie. Your videos are a life saver, and they are helping me help her. With Fundations at school being so right handed focused, she wasn't learning correctly for her.

    I'm 45, left handed , and still write with my paper upside down, my numbers & letters backwards. However, my penmanship is beautiful lol.

      Don't despair, I'm sure he will be fine just let him make the letters and numbers that feel the most comfortable. Don't worry about the correct holding of the pen. The outcome is what is important. Remember to watch the direction that you write with your right hand. If you push your pencil away from your palm to make a zero he's going to want to push the pencil away from his palm to make a zero in the opposite direction and that goes with all letters watch how you cross your t's he's going to want to go in the same direction towards or away from his hand. Good luck I hope he does well.

    i kinda write like a lefty(even thought i am) but i don't to the zeros or o's like other left handed people do. Maybe it is because i was thought by left handed people. i defentely do the straight lines twords my left. i guess not all leftys do this aaaand yeah. you probably already know that.

    Thanks so much for the video. During homeschooling I’ve noticed my 7 yo leftie will often write the ones digit before the tens when writing a two-digit number, I.e. he will write the number right to left. Should I try to correct this? I’m not sure if it will make maths harder for him in the long term.

      Maybe what you can do is ask him to say the number. 23 is 2 tens and 3 ones. Tell him if he writes the numbers in the order that they're spoken, not only will other people understand, but it will make his math career easier. And you can explain that it may seem confusing, but eventually it will make sense to him and he will get used to it. As he gets older and starts working with thousands and ten thousands and higher, it will be very important that he writes them in the order that they're spoken. You might also want to point out that when he's doing addition or subtraction, we DO start with the ones place. That may be where the confusion is occurring. Now that he's dealing with two digit numbers and being constantly told to start doing the math in the ones place could have his brain thinking I start writing a number in the ones place. Explain the difference to him. I hope this was helpful!

    I think I may be stupid or something because I’m left handed and I don’t write 5, 7, 8, or 9 the way you did.
    I start 5 from the bottom.
    I start 7 from the bottom
    8 in the middle
    I start my 9 from the bottom of the O and come down when I get to the top

    • @JoAnnsSchool
      @JoAnnsSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't mean your stupid! It just means you found a different way that it works for you. This video was just a guideline. Lefties write many different ways. The important thing is, can other people read your writing, and does it look okay. :-)
