      Perhaps, like many experimentals, this could result in a vessel eventually (once the super-traditionalists let up) result in a design that is somewhat... homeworldish OR Expanse in design. Namely, ships with a gravity field that align with the primary thrust engine, so that one can be turned off while the other on, and thrust can replace the field if things go awry.
      Who knows, perhaps it could result in some new designs that transition out the sensible opposing primary thrust pattern with a vessel that either has 3, one that is also a lower power, higher efficiency in the same direction of artificial gravity, or even something esoteric such as two, but instead of a 180 degree angle, a 90 degree one (or something else) between the two primary thrusts.
      I am sure many such concepts would be experimental, with a few examples that see further production/use due to some mission parameters they are well suited to. But this is an era when things are in upheaval after all.
      Incidentally, do any of these ships have magnetic sails as backup systems at all? I know drift has basically rendered such things unecessary, but what if some vessels still have some raisable/extendable masts and booms for magnetic sails for use near stars? Or even as an emergency backup for "we need to dock, but we are out of normal manuevering propellant. Oh, hey, 8 thin extendable masts with powerful electromagnets on them that slowly deflect solar particles enough that we can slowly dock with a ship without using a near-dock-safe reaction engine. But um, this will take half a day or so, anyone want to play cards?"

      Well, she was the daughter of the Commander-in-Chief of the Centran Defense Force, Fleet Admiral Darius Farren, so it's possible she learned about it from him. Other than that, it seems as though she was involved in the _Leander_ Project, as it's mentioned that the shipbreaking yard the _Huntress_ was stored was known only to those who were part of that initiative.
      As for the ship, that was just a _Protectress_-Class Corvette.

      No way. This is an ambush predator, through and through, and meant to hunt the biggest game. If I were captain, I wouldn't get out of bed for anything smaller than a cruiser. This girl stalks the wilderness, dark and quiet, waiting for prey worthy of her time and attention.
      Seriously, though. Proper combat doctrine for this ship class. My thoughts.
      This ship skulks around in the black, away from front-line combat. Ideal target: One or two ship-of-the-line type bruisers, but with minimal escorts. Shouldn't be hard. Who escorts a ship of the line when it's just changing stations.
      Weapons doctrine: Start with that rail-gun. Less signature than torpedoes. If you can throttle the velocity of the slug, try and do it so you're opening salvo all hit at once.
      Focus almost entirely on a single ship, and don't stop until the target is a cloud of parts or it's time to leave, whichever comes first.
      A last salvo of torpedoes, maybe atomics, to dazzle enemy sensors, do a flippy-flip, then run, run, run away while everyone is blind.

    I wasn't expecting a Breakdown on the _Huntress_-Class so soon, but it is a far from unwelcome sight. And the Faithless Project definitely sounds interesting, as it will doubtless involve an exploration of Advari History and Culture, as well as Vadric's own struggles with his beliefs in light of his beliefs; will it be available only on Nebula, or will it be present on other platforms in the future?
    Anyway, a couple of notes regarding the Breakdown itself.
    * You've got to love the Military-Industrial Complex taking advantage of chaos to produce a new-fangled design.
    * So the _Huntress_ was a derivative of the _Leander_-Class Destroyer Sloop, eh? And only those who worked on the original Leander Project knew about it; does that mean Cass was in Military R&D during the War, in addition to her role as a frontline commander? It would explain how she knew how to fly it so well.
    * I like how the _Huntress_ was built for comfort and long periods of operation with it's crew accommodations and it's Paragravity Plating. Clearly, Keeper's Dance learned from the Frontier Union's Mistakes with the _Indria_-Class Outriders and recognized the importance of maintaining crew morale over long periods in a ship too small to include a centrifuge hab. And the fact that it can perform planetary landings is pretty great too, since this was clearly a vessel meant to operate behind enemy lines for reconnaissance and special operations as opposed to a Ship of the Line like the _Tripathia_ and the _Temperentia._
    * I also like how the weaknesses of the Class are addressed as well, and how this ship clearly would have had quite a few kinks for the CDF to work out even if the Great Famine hadn't hit the Tantalus Cluster like a truck; expensive due to complex systems requiring a lot of maintenance, the gravity plate and thruster potential problems(I imagine we'll be seeing those in the first episode of Season 2), and other such issues.
    All in all, a very good piece, and one that clearly illustrates the pros and cons of the Class, the potential it both once had as a new direction for the Centran Defense Force, and that it has now as the _Guinevere._

    The first thing any captain would do after purchasing it would be add an aftermarket rcs system for docking. It should be a relatively easy and cheap upgrade.

    • @MentalMallard28
      @MentalMallard28 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I’m not so sure. The lack of rcs isn’t a design oversight, it’s a design choice, intended to cut down on the ship’s logistics footprint. Given the ship’s size and lack of significant internal space to house enough rcs for the length of its deployments, youd have to increase the size to add those tanks, reducing weight, etc. As a long deployment ambush craft, she is uniquely suited to this choice, as the only time you really need to do low strength burns like with rcs is in docking. Her crew is too small to effect a boarding action on anything bigger than a sloop, so really the only docking she has to do is with friendly ships or stations, who presumably have ways to assist a docking on a ship with damaged rcs. Worse case you open both cargo bays and zip line. Compare that to the logistical boon of needing only fuel, which seems to last years, ammo, which lasts as long as you make it last, and consumables, which can be stored for quite some time, and you have a ship that can lye in wait for a very long time. Most of her time will be spent not needing RCS, and when she does need it it’s on scenarios where she has assistance

    • @Pentagon6519
      @Pentagon6519 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MentalMallard28 you realize you kind of destroyed your own argument. Yes, she would need to use rcs in very limited situations such as docking or potentially nuzzling up to an asteroid to hide, rcs is certainly less noticeable to sensors than her normal drive. And because the uses of rcs would be minimal the storage would be minimal, probably just some tanks bolted on close to the thrusters themselves.

    • @MentalMallard28
      @MentalMallard28 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Pentagon6519 Any external tanks would alter the ship’s silhouette, which would affect its stealth. And if you try to minimize the size of the tanks you loose redundancy, which is not something you can sacrifice on something so important. You either have it or you don’t, and if you don’t have it reliably then you don’t have it. Better to focus on learning the ship and training your coxswain than having RCS that you have to use sparingly. The Huntress is basically a coilgun that happens to have crew quarters, with such a stripped down and specialized ship it makes sense that they cut down on stuff that wasn’t needed for the core functionality of “hide, shoot, run”. I’d imagine rather than conventional RCS a production model Huntress would have had a second, smaller set of thrusters added at the extreme ends of the hull, allowing for slower more precise adjustments while maintains the low logistic footprint of no RCS while still allowing for low strength burns and rapid end over end maneuvers with the main set. But that’s the sort of heavy modifications you really can’t do without fully overhauling the design, so it makes sense that they haven’t done that

      Problem is those fusion engines would also have leverage on the hull structure, It should have weaker rcs as well though for gyroscopic control, as well as for delicate and fuel efficient manoeuvring, but fusion drives should be mounted amid ships so Thier power doesn't rip the thing in 2. Unfortunately using them as gyros is fuel inefficient. Also without rcs as well it can't truly maneuver 3 dimensionally. Ie you have to gyro to keep main guns and low cross section on target but without rcs it can't spin and side thrust at the same time. You'd have to shoot, reposition and shoot. With RCS as well as honking great side thrust the gods themselves couldn't predict where it's going to be by the time the target can get ordinance out to you and you are still pointing your guns at them, saying that piloting such a ship would be damn near impossible,

    Swiveling the maneuverer rockets adds no more manoeuvrability. If it is not using aerodynamics to land then landing on its belly is no easier than landing on its tail and the main engine, so the reasons given for the deck orientation don't make sense.

    Nice design, but the placement of the maneuvring thrusters in the middle if the ship does not feel right to me. Too small leverage to help with turning the ship. Fine for landing though, but turning with thrusters this close to the center of mass will cause more sideways movement than turning moment. They should have been further apart. More to the front, rear and with wider stance. But that would obviously did not look as cool.

    This is cool and all, but the placement of those huge RCS thrusters is extremely inefficient for yaw and pitch control. If those thrusters were placed farther from the center of mass (forward and backward of their current location) pitch and yaw control would be greatly improved without impacting the control of any other axis.

      @@Madwand99 the difference between the Guin's RCS and irl RCS is that irl RCS doesn't have the power output of a fighterboat engine. that sorta stress off of the centreline would be a lot heavier to strengthen against and thus would be more costly than having them clustered. having them clustered also simplifies fuel lines to each thruster

    Hard to pilot...? Modern fighter jets since the mid 1970s have fly by wire controls that allow dynamically unstable designs -- meaning that if the FBW system failed, the aircraft would disintegrate within a few seconds. Why would a much more advanced spacecraft not have something at least equal to that?

    • @E.hexzor
      @E.hexzor 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      sure it'd have fly-by-wire, but having that kind of difference in RCS compared to a conventional ship makes it a lot harder to learn comparatively. it's more akin to flying a VTOL jet when used to a conventional jet

    Why are you using a mixture of Metric and Imperial for the units? Since this is the far future everything should be Metric! Even today the US military is all Metric for armaments; for example, the main gun on the US main battle tank, the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams is 120mm. So why are you using inches to describe this starship's guns?

      @@matthewdowner3057 It just seems weird to me to see this mixture of Metric and Imperial. Back then they used British Imperial and only Imperial. In the future the USA, hopefully will fully adopt the Metric system and then we can drop British Imperial / US Customary. I grew up in Canada with British Imperial and then learned Metric; when I moved to the US I had to switch to US Customary. It felt like a step back! Metric is the future!
