Elephant Hill Strikes Again... And Again

- We got a call for a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Elephant Hill with a broken front suspension part. We headed out to check it out. With the front end being mostly plastic we couldn't safely carry it out. So we got it moved so traffic could continue on and we ordered parts. The next day Mike and Shawn headed in to replace the parts as I headed up on the mountain by Old LaSal to get a truck and trailer out. After replacing the front cv shaft on the truck and getting it unstuck I headed down the mountain. On the way I got a call for another jeep with clutch issues further into Elephant Hill. So I called and let Shawn and Mike know about it after they got the one jeep back together to go find the next. So I went to the shop and loaded the buggy up and headed in to help them. By the time I had got there they were at the base of the big climb. So I helped another disabled rig make it up then helped them. It was an eventful couple days but everything went pretty smooth. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Looks like the Trailhawk got mauled by a Diamond Billed Rock Pecker. 😅
Sweet Baby Jesus that Trail Hawk driver was nuts!
No kidding, eh? Foot must be made out of lead.
SLOW is not a word he understands...
Trail Roach
Trail tampon
Yeah, The Trail Hawk should come w a warning..Rock Crawling Not Suggested, Those along w the new Wrangler 4xE hybrids are gutless....the 4xE is like a rattle trap brand new off the car haulers, i work at a major car rental facility, you can hear them coming from a very long distance and they sound like a dumpster filled with loose metal and debris literally thrashing around in a circle. Couldnt pay me to own one of those things.
That time lapse was pretty cool. Both over the town and outside the shop.
I agree! Big shout out to the Editor(s).
I honestly wholeheartedly think with every fiber of my being, that Rory don't understand just how important he really is to his community and these broke down motorists. He's irreplaceable to us all. Thank you Rory! Your are definitely a hero in your own class.
Rory and Shawn communicating by indian sign language shows the real talent of this crew.
Me watch many time. Hope Shawn do sign language. Hope my comment not offend, though. Many people too serious!
Rory, Shawn and Mike are real American heroes
Can you imagine those three in the Real American Hero commercial😂😂
Good
Mechanical miracles all over the place! Nothing like a three-fer for a Thursday.
Thanks gentlemen.
It is just a BLAST to watch yall own the terrain with your driving skills, while Mike does the same with his videography ! Not to mention all of the mechanical skills.
Marvelous simply Marvelous.
I think I'd want to spend a day working with Mike
out of the whole crew
I just dig his sense of humor, get a little chuckle from him every episode.
Thanks Mike
When the tire says All Terain, but the suspension says all parking lots. Bahaha!
Trails with light sand and mud, No Rocks... Anything else requires a lift kit and better tires. The Grand Cherokee was lucky to get in & out of there with the bumpers in tact
Where's the suspension say that? Guess the other trailhawk that was with him on the original run, plus every single return trip couldn't handle it either? Where's all the hate when a stock wrangler breaks down doing some lite offroading? Same clearances, just different driving styles and creature comforts. And are you suggesting that 90% of the trail to that point was paved road? He nearly completed the trail if it weren't for the mistake that caused the breakage.
@@hikingphotog Thank you, I was wondering if you idiots knew the difference, Well... Yeah, now I know.
Holy cow, Team TrailMater is #1 in off road recovery/ repair.
Fantastic day of fun in the sun for Rory, Shawn, and Mike.
Almost like you planned it 😅
Or they expected it too! lol 😂
Still the best off road recovery video channel. Hats off to everybody. Love the action shots and the dialog. Great editing and always interesting.
Well we knew Rory was good, but driving a vehicle through there without a clutch takes a special kind of skill!
I’ve driven on highway with a failed hydraulic clutch system, so starting in gear and clutchless up and down shifting, not a real problem, in my car, one I’ve done thousands of miles in, and even that was not totally straightforward, jumping in an unfamiliar vehicle and driving it through some of the toughest terrain clutchless, wow!
I doff my cap to you Rory!
Rory, you sound like you're under the weather... you know, you'll get better faster if you rest! Take it easy!
Sounded hoarse, maybe a sore throat or a serious case of seasonal allergies. Cinco De Mayo weekend Moab may have snow, Rory better let Cris take care of him like rub his chest with vapor rub and some hot herbal tea with honey in it. My mother used to say to me when I was young "if you're too sick to go to work or school, then you're too sick to go out and play".
This is the greatest off road recovery channel on TH-cam! You should be called Off Road Mobile Repair Shop, I swear there ain't hardly anything you guys can't fix/replace/weld etc. to get'm going!👍👍👍👍👍
Man it's beautiful out there
Great trail mater views as always Mike💥 Shawn and Rory with the front digs💚❣️
Dont be impressed by the digs , just showing off !lol thats one of the things that caught my eye when i started watching at 27k subs .
@@davestevens4263 Kinda me too. It was on same Elephant Hill trail. Rory and Shawn went to get a white jeep Cherokee, all that was holding the front end was a steering linkage. So they removed it and winched the front axle up on the mater trailer then had to back up to the Jeep and pull it up and set the front end on the axle. I didn't know why the front wheels were turning but the rears were not in that switchback turn. Thinking My 4 x 4 can't do that. So, if I want to learn more about that rig I had better subscribe and hit the black bell. I have learned a lot of terminology and the How Too's. Long 4 years watching every video and watching his channel grow. It's not just a recovery with Rory and crew it's a Science.
Rule number 1. AIR DOWN!!! Great video!
Looks like Rory gets to drive to work, while Mike has to walk to work! (Great job of filming BTW!)
Mike summons the Rock Pecker to come give him a lift. Pun intended.!
Love the office sceneary Rory, Shawn, & Mike.
Like my dad told me. "Son, we make our living off of people trying to do things with their equipment that they shouldn't. Don't make fun of them. They're our bread and butter."
Rescuing stupid people makes the world go round.
How your going to know your limits if you don't push them alittle
Damn chicken. Errrr trail hawks....
Aka job security
In the Fire Department, we called them "Job Security", lol.
That Jeep driver has a heavy foot!
Yeah, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt at first when he said he accelerated too much, until he pointed out “I hit there, and there… and yeah, there, too”
Uhhh… how fast were you going when you touched down on that first rock?? Yeesh!!! lol
He didn't get those 3 trail badges from jellying it down the trail. He got them from jamming it down the trails.😂😂😂
@@kjsgardeni have the incident on video...he panic throttled when he saw traffic behind him, and yes, he did have a heavy foot on the trails...it was hard to reign him in!
Mike's a braver man than me. I get a special feeling when a truck is coming down a hill and there's no where to get out of it's way if the brakes fail.
I love the caveman jack stands 👍😎Rory
There's a lot of concrete out on that road, and I'm surprised to see that. ❤
Two lower ball joints for only hal... er... TWICE the trail breakage! I hope they charge extra for that 'cause I WANT one! lolin' out loud!
I just want to thank the driver of the Grand Cherokee for the hilarious content. Well done sir!
It's folks like you that keep this channel strong.
I could just read the thoughts going through Rory's head when they rolled up on that😂. Seems Elephant Hill needs a gatekeeper obstacle.
yet another amazing tail from the adventures of Trail Mater. Thanks Rory, Mike & Shawn
5:08 Rory’s pause and look said it all. PRICELESS
Shawn's brave letting Mike run the hammer!
😂🤣😂
Shawn looks super cool driving Trail Mater
Mike: “that’s not the trail” 🤣🤣🤣
Looks like you guys aren’t lacking for work. It’s good you have an awesome crew to step in to help get the jobs done. Hope you’re feeling better soon Rory.
Wow Beyond words watching that TrailHawk out there. Some people have no clue. Truly more money than brains. You guys take care of yourselves and stay safe.
For that kind of money in that hawk you could have a really built up rig !!
Elephant Hill isn't even that hard. Those Trailhawks are more than capable enough to run them. That guy just needed to take it easy on the throttle. There was another white grand cherokee with him. That guy has a yt channel himself and he did it just fine. He's probably posted the video from his side already.
Oh wow. That was quite the busy day with plenty of moving parts 😂😂😂. Great work Trailmater
Rory's skill and smarts compensates for a lot of off-road incomprehension. 😅😁
Hope u get feeling better rory
Talented but humble crew. These guys are AWESOME!!!!!!!
The dude in the Trailhawk needs to learn throttle and brake control...
was hoping someone had already said this
I was starting to wonder if the throttle on that was very sensitive, because some of those electronic throttles can be. Otherwise he's a really jumpy driver.
Yeah something was off, wonder if the throttle or brake was acting strange
I was the white WK2 that was wheeling with him. Your not wrong, was constantly reminding him to take it slow. He's still learning, and this was just one of those lessons he learned the hard way. We all were newbs at some point.
@@mediocreman2He is a really jumpy driver...atleast he was. I'm sure this incident has tempered his throttle input.
I’m impressed at the trail repairs you guys are able to perform. Y’all are the best.
I never saw any elephants.😎
Some people's kids, I swear. But, it keeps the team busy, so yay!
It is so amazing to see what experience and techniques can do for a piece of equipment that most folks could barely anything with. Mounds of experience and proper techniques can coax a piece of equipment to do things that most folks couldn't consider.
As I watch more and more of your videos, Paul and Matt's videos the more that I appreciate the level of talent in each team. You all do awesome things with vehicles.
What folks need to remember is that what you do look possible and some times easy because you have hundreds and even thousands of hours and dollars of experience that most folks don't see or know of. It's taken you years to get you to where you can do what you do.
Wow...now that was a full show guys! Nice.
Rory was Kermit the frog on this go round, Great video, lots of hard and successful work. KUDOS to all!
Thanks for the video guys
Love the scenery of Utah. Very diverse state. Keep making great videos guys..
Sean and Mike really shine in this video. Thanks Rory for your content.
Rory and his team are off road animals, you guys got it going on
Excellent work my friends.
JUST AMAZING RECOVERIES , THANKS Trail Mater, always an enjoyable video of a recovery of broken Jeeps, the green rope :)
Love the longer video. That means more smiles, more laughs, and more scenery ❤❤❤ Thanks
Get well soon Rory
Drove an Isuzu Trooper from SW of Portland to NW of Seattle with no clutch, city traffic an all . Quite the adventure. Looks like the rocks were more fun than stop lights. You guys are the best,!!!!!
They had all those parts in STOCK! And I'm sure not cheap. Sounds like a known issue whether you're killing it or not on the trails. Great job on all the Stellantis recoveries. Cheers.
When they fix the clutch Roaddogs probably better get a starter to have on hand when that one gives up. She's got a damn good battery too. Great work guys, love the scenery!
Just watching trailmator get there was s a joy. Out... Is going to be an adventure!
Almost 2 hours from Moab (each way) to the bottom of Elephant Hill. Going up and then down, not difficult; coming back up a challenge for unprepared drivers, stock tires (not deflated), & no lockers & no lift. Makes a difference when Rory's crew is there to 'mend vehicles' & get them out. It's a gargantuan public service that takes all day & these guys should be complimented to the hilt. Last year we pulled up two lite trucks that couldn't make the last steep push; (we were coming down), & put our nose to hill, connected a rope to each vehicles (we backed up) and pulled them out, one at a time. Rory doing it from much further down the hill, is a much more difficult task. Amazing the moves TM makes going round the tight turns & corners. The public so lucky to have these 'ace' gentlemen around.
Are you sure the THs tires weren't deflated? Because i was kinda there...they were at or just below 20psi. I partially agree though, i am not a fan of those stock tires on 18" rims, can't air down much more than 20 with having issues burping out air when it folds over rocks. (Especially with the extra weight 9f the 4xe)
But it would help you to understand the traction system on the new jeeps...it locks the rear when in certain traction modes. This new driver just needed to be more patient, otherwise he'd been up and out just fine with no issues.
@@FearlessTrailhawk I apologize if that was you, or you were there. My intention was to speak to the audience re tires, lift, lockers & ability to get out. From the view in the video I couldn't tell but just guessed, and I should have clarified my words. Some 12-13 years ago we began to annually go into Devil's Kitchen or Bobby Joe (or one near by) (with the exception of 2 years Covid). Last year though seared into me, what happens when people have the wrong vehicles & are not prepared. 3 from Virginia went through Beef Basin, dropped in, got to SOB Hill (& they told me later) they spent 7 hours getting 3 vehicles through that spot, and ended up camping in the dark on the road. The next day they struggled to the bottom of E Hill and spent 2 hours getting 3 vehicles up, but the first two couldn't make the near last 'big climb" and so we pulled them up. The third had a longer body and gunned it and made it. All three scraped badly on the ciimb out, we waited nearly two hours and two Navtec drivers waited at the bottom (trying to get up) while this took place. So I apologize, this was still in my memory, I'm happy the jeep was able to get fixed and get out.
@@stephenlewis8143 That sound like a very different trail and situation. I've wheel either the KL and WK2 platform for over 5 years. Elephant Hill is not out of their capabilities. I was the white stock+tires WK2 that was shown briefly. The WL was with me. He is a newish driver and i was doing my best to reign his heavy throttle foot in. If he'd waited 30 seconds for me to get out of his way and spot him up the ledge, he'd not have smashed his control arm and would have driven out all on his own. His air suspension was also quirky after the trail fix and was stuck in normal ride height, but it righted itself once he got back up to the top of the hill and allowed him to raise it up the 2" for offroad.
Imho, that climb out is actually one of the easier sections of the trail, it just has the mental aspect of the drop offs.
And i'm not seeing anyone saying that stockish JK was out of place...when it has roughly the same clearance as the WL.
@@FearlessTrailhawk I hope you looked at my previous note, I meant to apologize. The route from the bottom W side of EH changes over time, & the last steep pitch changes also. For newbies, they either don't remember or don't know re the platform that greets the driver once they top out. They can then backup and then go up the last pitch & then in minute or two top out. I'm no expert, but I've been in there enough, and I've seen vehicles (that in my view) should not be in there; they scrape at most any instance & they have to stop and put rocks down for the slightest lip climb. SOB hill can be another big challenge for vehicles & we have aided some at that spot (mostly just talking them through options). Speaking of what vehicles can make it up, over, through the rough spots to Devils Kitchen & then back up the w side of EH. A lot of vehicles could arguably do it, & many would sustain degrees of damage & so it's best in my view to have a safe & sustainable drive & capable vehicle on the route.
Years ago, the last climb, lots of loose rock and dirt; without lockers, for 2dr. Jeeps or lite trucks they would stall out on the climb. In the last 2 years (post Covid) the route has been pretty 'clean'. If you think stock vehicles on 30 or 32 inch tires can make the route to Devils Kitchen & then have no problem on the 'route back' and then up EH, then have that opinion if you wish. You obviously know what your are doing and most others also. In hindsight I could have just complimented Rory & left it at that. Happy Trails.
@@stephenlewis8143 I saw the apology, and i appreciate that, but as i'm not a local and was not familiar with all the nicknames for each section of that trail i had wrongly assumed you were talking about different trails and not EH. So that was my bad.
My point was that despite your belief that neither of us should have been there because you seem to believe that this trail is above our capabilities simply because of a single driver error that resulted in a trail break (i know very few wranglers that wheel regularly that haven't had a trail break). I assure you that it is not. Both of our vehicles had adequate clearance and were prepared for the trail. (no, i don't make a habit of bringing a spare...everything...on every trail for 'just incase'...do you really carry an entire spare jeep in the back to replace any part that possibly may break?)
We only stacked rocks on a single 'turtle' rock on the way to the squeeze, that was it. I was also trying to say that, in my multiple runs of EH, the exit climbs back out are more mentally challenging because of the ledges and otherwise a much 'easier' section of trail once one understands where the trail is and how to not drive off the edge.
And its not simply "just my opinion" that stock vehicles have no problems doing the entirety of EH trail and loop, that is my experience, on multiple occasions. Yes, its not as easy as a jeep on 40s/ect....but heavy mods are not needed for most trails...just a good driver mod and line choice. But i lead stock rides frequently so its much easier for me to understand stock capabilities than some of you guys who have modded your rigs and can't fathom stock rigs doing the same trails as upi. Yes, its slower for us, but we still get through the trail with no damage, unless in this clear case of operator error.
I'm sorry if my stock-ish jeep doing the same 'hard' trails as you has offended you. And i apologize if my defense of stock rigs has triggered a trauma response from a bad experience. I will leave you alone now. Have a good day mate.
Rory Sir, I must say, you and Matt have absolutely the best view from your office windows, regardless of which office you're in, that any city office window could ever even come close to
Trail mater is so badass just gets the job done.
So much work behind the scenes with excellent filming, editing and explaining what you are doing to fix all broken parts.
Thank you for making this available in HD. Spectacular "office" scenery you have there...
When does one realize it might be a good idea to TURN AROUND!!!!😅😂
Well done men, Rory you sound sick, I hope you get to feeling better soon.
The dude with the Grand Cherokee definitely has the right attitude! Ignoring all the issues which have plagued the newer Fiat Grand Cherokees it looks like a good overlanding rig for mild trails. With a Wrangler if he wants to stay with a Jeep or even a 4Runner for more moderate trails I think he would have even more fun. I would be hesitant to take that Grand Cherokee on anything with rocks with its ground clearance, at least not without full skids but even then it would be scrap city. Nice recovery Rory & team! Moab's best.
Its got the same stock clearance as a wrangler, so why take a wrangler for clearance? Maybe he enjoys the creature comforts? The 4xe was a new driver and made some mistakes, something quite a lot of wrangler drivers do, but they don't get heat for it for some reason.
@@hikingphotog I keep hearing you babble about clearance, what are you talking about, break over and departure angles? and what the hell are creature comforts?
@@capnspicy5565 I dunno, maybe look it up sometime? The internet contains facts as well as haters, though the two seldom agree.
Awesome
Keep up the good work. Very enjoyable channel.
Thanks
Wow! Gotta love that blue hi lift on the trail pigeon. Yes, it was all on that customer, but it was that customer somehow thinking he had a pebble crawler outta that barely-able-to-make-a-bad-turn-off-a-curb "jeep."
Good work guys, I liked seeing the driver pitch in. but....Trail Pigeon?!? lol
Yes Mike. If you like your coffee crisp you're Canadian 😇
Coffee crisp wow I would never of thought that you guys didn't have them, my condolences 😊🇨🇦🇺🇸
Rory sounds like you are losing your voice. I hope you are okay. These people need your service. You Shawn and Mike are like a good harmony. Always working together.
Back in the 80's I worked at a ranch here in Montana. The owner had one of those useless VW Rabbit trucks. They had a tiny clutch, and if you got stuck, you did not rock it to get out. I got stuck in a drift in a farmers driveway, and rocked the truck to get out. Real trucks you can do that with. I wound up speed shifting to get back to the ranch. I only had to restart with the starter twice. Fun memories!
You guys are so competent with trail repairs and ingenuity. Excellent.
You always make me laugh with your shenanigans and humor. Thank you.
What's not to love...working in that fabulous scenic environment...it's every Boys/ Mans Adventure playground 👍 Not One Diamond Billed Rock Pecker spotted on this trip though 🌵
Hope you get to feeling better Rory.
Great job guy's. The warm weather makes for a lot of work for you guy's. Thanks for the video stay safe and keep up the great work.
I had to watch and re watch time stamp 11:22. Cool to see fog move into a valley and the time lapse or fast forward the video was cool. The stars were having a star show.
Thank you guys. What you do is awesome. Best office in the world
Ohhh myyyy!!! Ill keep my opinion to myself....😂 daaang!!!! Hey Justin! The editing and production just gets better and better! Thank you all for takin us along!
That was one hell of a day. You guys sure work your tails off. Hope the cash register was working well for you. Thanks for sharing.
Shawn's directional sign language is absolutely hilarious 😊
Huge kudos to the guys driving a jeep without a clutch on a trail that is difficult to navigate with the clutch!
You guys are the hardest working group I ever seen and you keep your sense of humor throughout. Thanks for the entertainment and life’s lessons of hard work and good times.
That last one with locked clutch was a great challenge 👍😎✊
It's so beautiful out there I can just imagine waking up to a sunset
That was the most impressive video!! love your trail repairs!! And your scenery is not too bad either!!
I remember when camping was just a tent , sleeping bag and a backpack full of supplies ! Then I gradulated a vehicle with a tent , sleeping bag , a cooler food and a couple of bags other supplies ! I never overloaded for camping and I always checked on what the area that I'm going to is like before going !
👍 thx Guys
Nice repairs & recoveries by everybody. It is nice to see you are starting the busy season being busy. I don't recall many recoveries from Elephant Hill so it was refreshing to see a different piece of your heaven. What Shawn said was the perfect answer. Thanks for sharing
Nice job boys as usual and you can’t beat a job in your office therefore is some beautiful scenery!

The best off road recovery channel in the universe!
That was an impressive piece of driving to get a clutchless vehicle up the trail. Great work!
That's how a team works,Rory, Shawn, Mike you are the real A-TEAM
A few years ago I spotted my dad's stock '08 4Runner over Elephant Hill. Slow and careful won the race that day. Looks like the trail hasn't gotten any better since then despite the asphalt and concrete in places.
front dig never get s old 👌
For as much money as the new Grand costs, it should be the most capable and durable trailhawk ever built. Since Jeep so desperately wants to be luxury brand, we are likely gonna see this kind of trail breakage in the next gen of wranglers (the one the Italians are developing now). It’s frustrating to see Jeep become a luxury brand… off-road and luxury don’t go together.
You guys really show how professional you are. No job is too much for you guys.
