How to Kind-of Fix Sticking or Broken BMW E90/E91/E92/E93 3-Series Cup Holders

Here is a quick and dirty way to fix those pesky sticking cup holders in your BMW E90/E91/E92/E93 3-Series. This is demonstrated on the inner-most cup holder but I imagine the outer cup holder operates in a similar fashion.

Over time, the spring mechanism can become detached from the cup holder housing; in my case, the tabs on the housing that hold the spring in place had broken off. In other cases, the gear inside of the mechanism may be worn out and provides enough resistance to slow the cup holder down.
What I was able to do is bend the end of the spring and re-attach it to the housing. Be very careful as the metal spring is extremely thin and will break on you. If that happens, you can always use tin-snips to cut the end of the spring and form it into a similar shape. I would opt to just remove the gear all-together as it just slowed the cup holder down and was unusable. Without the gear, the cup holder will pop out significantly faster than before which in my opinion, is not necessarily a bad thing.
This fix may work for you, it may not work at all but it may be worth a shot to you if you don't want to fork out the $75.00 for a brand new genuine BMW part. Cheers!
