- May 15th, 2014. Went to St. Paul, Nebraska to record their Thunderbolt 1003. My dad works with a guy from the fire department there and said they test the fire signal on the 15th of the month, so I had to go see.

I find them scary and fascinating at the same time. I love it! It’s like they caused me to want to run away, but also just stop and stare in their direction! It’s just so fascinating and I love it it’s just so eerie but beautiful
The thunderbolt is arguably the most famous and innovative siren in history. It was able to do Steady, Wail, Alternating Steady, Alternating Wail, Pulse, Pulse Wail, Undulating Hi-Lo, Growl, and Fast Wail (this one had to be done manually). What makes it more impressive is that it was invented in 1952. Truly remarkable piece of equipment.

Mostly the 1003 series when this siren launched it out won the 1000 series because the extra signals it could do thanks! To the two solenoids the high and the low tone

I can also hear the Solenoids.
This tone was used in the event of a nuclear attack in the civil defense days. A steady wail was used for tornadoes being the Cold War is over many serins of older origins still use the hi-lo tone. Clearly it grabs the attention as intended

Can someone tell me what is “pulse” and like “pulse wail” and stuff?
@@dfwrproductions Both solenoids open and close at the same time rather than alternating, which causes the sound to "pulse". Pulse wail is the same thing but with the attack signal.
Fun fact:the solenoids go for a short period of time after thunderbolt stops, it can be heard

They have to fix the pole. When it rotates it wobbles. Probably have to replace a new pole with a sturdy one
There's nothing wrong with it. It's a steel light pole anchored into solid concrete. Steel flexes. The thing has been there for 60 years and has taken 80+mph winds before. It'll be fine.

The town my grandparents lived in used this type for their tests every month. It used to scare the hell out of me when I was little.

Update: The Tilly Thunderbolt 1003 has been replaced with a Gurio-Umino Tempest 128 because it fell over and caught fire.
These old Thunderbolt 1003's are getting harder and harder to find. Nice Job recording this one

There is a "Refurbished" Thunderbolt 1003 all they did was repaint it. It's in Derby KS
If you go to Olney Texas there is a working 1003 right in the middle of the town

Too bad we don’t have tornado sirens in my area. I love seeing them. I saw the rare ACA Hurricane in Milwaukee, WI in July 2018. There’s a new FS 508 by my grandmas house that replaced a 2t22 and the new siren was moved to her house.

this used to be the signal for our community for tornados, the up and down alternate high low, still gives me chills to listen to it since it used to terrify my as a little kid, I mean I thought something was wrong with the siren it sounded all messed up like the world was ending or something.
Well, the origins of that wail is apparently for nukes, so might as well be the sound of the end.

the town I lived in had a thunderbolt and used this mode for fire calls. when I first moved into that town and heard it for the first time it freaked me out (woke me from sleep in 3AM in the morning).
