BMW rarely have issues with its engine block, the block is very reliable. The real issue is the plastics and electronics inside the engine that'll breakdown sooner than you expected
What makes it different to any other car though? Mustangs have plastic oil pans now...Even your typical Hemi engine has a plastic intake. BMW has actually gone up in reliability than backwards.
@@GokuTheHusky the quality and grade of plastics they use. Compared to a Toyota, Honda, or Ford, I find that overtime BMW plastic gets extremely brittle over time to compared to other brands.
@@alextran8188 Part of that is due to higher operating temperatures of BMW engines for emissions. While most engines sit at around 85C, a BMW will sit at 100-105C
I have both an N54 and an N55 in two different cars. The N54 has many reliability issues, but nothing catastrophic assuming you don't have turbo wastegate issues before 85k where they extended the warranty to and even then its not catastrophic. The N55 has less issues, but can have rod bearing issues - this is catastrophic and generally requires a new engine or a rebuild - ask me how I know :( . Another issue it can have eccentric shaft failure which can cost $4k plus to replace. But you are right that with the B58 they finally seem to have gotten in right, a nice evolution.
One of the tuners I know has the 2020 Supra with the b58 ... He has tuned it to 677 kw which is about 905hp ... The engine internals unchanged and he believes the limit of the stock engine block is around 1000hp ....

@@cosmins3268 For real. Toyota isn't a bunch of idiots. If they trusted bmw to make a car that would live up to be called the mk5 supra, then certainly they were up to the task. I mean for god sakes, McLaren trusted them to make the engine for the F1

@@nathanperdomo2111 Yeah, its a great engine, but doesnt like revving much past 5000-5400rpm. Mine's covered 106k now, and is still very reliable and sound. Ive just ordered a JCW, but due to the supply chain for electronics being so bad, it will be next year before I see it !
I have to admit that I wasn’t happy about Toyota using a bmw engine in the new Supra until recently learning more about that engine. Learning about the reliability, and tune ability of it and how Toyota made sure it was up to their standards for reliability. So I went and got a 340i with a b58 in it and traded in my Lexus is350 and couldn’t be happier.
You forgot to mention that the B58 had to meet Toyota quality control. It only passed Toyota's quality control after Toyota's engineer sent back 1000's of B58 parts back to Germany for improvements. Now all BMW models with B58's benefit from this.
The 2JZGTE engine will always be my favorite engine - the power and sounds it makes are so emotional (plus it looks amazing too). However, BMW’s B58 and S58 engines have clearly risen to the new height of modern inline-six king of engines.
The B58 is not really just 5 years old. It is an evolution of the N54 (bi turbo) and N55 (twin scroll turbo) engines from cars like the 335i going back to 2005 iirc in the E60 535i. There are also variants like the S55 from the last M3/M4 and the S58 from the current M3/M4. Reliability issue you hear of from the earlier engines are normally from the bolt on bits and not the actual engine itself.
The N52, N54, N55, and B58 are all wildly impressive when you take a step back and look at their competition. Yes, they have some faults. But it's nothing overly wild considering the performance and driving dynamics you get.
Having put my foot down while driving a 340i in Sport Plus, I experienced an out of the world experience! It's scary as a stock engine, a tuned B58 is just :O WHAT AN ENGINE! A MASTERPIECE!
TL;DR: it's not about history I find the B58 vs the 2JZ very similar to the FA20 vs the EJ25. Yes the EJ has been around for decades and yes there's more knowledge for EJ's, but the FA has a better top end, better stock turbo and better tuning potential. It's basically purists vs engineers, yes the FA also had downsides (the bottom end isn't that strong and the compression ratio is kinda high) and it wasn't put through the paces of motorsports but the knowledge learned throughout the EJ platform's lifetime is implemented into the FA's platform. You can scream and cry about how some things are better then others, but there was a time where the EJ25 and 2JZ sucked in the aftermarket department. If the drive to make the engine(s) better, it'll be better sometime down the road.
Not sure why you brought Subaru engines into this, but the newer FA20DIT is a bit of a disappointment. However, the FA20 NA found in the BRZ or 86 is far better than the FA20DIT found in the WRX. Most likely because Toyota co developed this engine.
BMW has made many flipping awesome engines, just not that many "recently". M30, M88, M54, S88, to name but a few, although all are straight 6's. For info, the BMW F1 engine used in the 1980's, with massive turbo's and producing up to 1,500BHP from 1.5litres, was built around old M10 standard road going engine. In fact the block was the "stock block". It's only the engines from the last 15 years or so that have tended to have "reliability" issues.
Yours is about the only response from someone who is familiar with BMW history. My vote for the greatest BMW engine would have gone to the M10, which powered everything from a lowly 318i to an F-1 car. But hey, don't expect others to agree here as it is only a 4 cylinder.
ayy b58! I sure love mine (2020 M240i) I have a stage 2 dinan tune as well and a whole bunch of other mods. its super fast, no problems (so far), and sounds incredible!! everything stock + dinan stage 2 tune is supposed to be around 420 ish wheel horsepower but I havent tried a dyno yet. best part is I still have my warranty
How? Any tuning of the ECU will void your warranty. Maybe a piggyback tune since you can take it off but a ECU tune will always be detectable even if you change it back to stock
@@JL-rx7ou its a ECU flash and either Dinan provides their own warranty or because its a conservative tune i can still use my manufacture warranty. which ever it is I made extra sure that was the case before getting it

the n54, n55, b58 are great engines. Have a N55 and no problems with it. Oil change interval to 10tkm and not too much torque when the engine isn´t on temp.
You should look at the BMW N54 engine it is legendary for pushing over 700 hp on stock bottom end, plus the fact the N54 has a forged crank and rods makes it a better choice, twin parallel turbos plus the after market support has made the N54 a tuners dream and hence the title of German 2JZ
Exactly the same stuff was said about N54 engine aswell... "best Bmw tuners engine", "German 2jz" and so on. So b58 isnt the only Bmw engine out there to be called all that. And between the two we have N55 aswell.

Alot better than than the n20 reputation haha. Overall I'm not the biggest fan of BMW but I would definitely buy a supra if I had the chance and be fine with the b58.
The m3 version of this engine can make 500+hp, return 30 mpg, be warrantied for 60k, and oil is fine for 10k miles according to bmw. Wtf why are we gong electric?
Though i prefer the 2JZ, im glad Toyota went B58 for the Supra. However i completely disagree with the whole argument that making a "3JZ" would have been to expensive. If, just like Nissan did with the GTR, Toyota had gone the V6 route instead of I6, then they pretty much already had the perfect engine in house. The 2GR-FE (3.5L V6) that they pretty much put on everything. Even on Lotus Exiges and Evoras. That engine is highly tunable and easily able to withstand 500sh HP. And it meets regulations. And its super light weight. And it sounds absolutely awesome. Imo thats the engine the new Supra should have had...
N54 block itself can handle 850hp+ on stock block the maintenance around it is trash but if your buying a 2jz for the 90s you’d have to put in just about the same maintenance. Plus the N54 is way more torquey bottom end because of the longer stroke.
@@edwardruelas3116 also the N54 has DFI which is good for preventing knock, the worst part of maintenance is the turbo wastegates but if you upgrade to TD04s it's not an issue. Injectors and HPFP, and oil filter gasket are the only other major maintenance issues. Just expensive is all.
The N52 is a great engine but not very tuneable. And of course isn’t comparable to anything Toyota makes because Toyota don’t have any engine as advanced as what BMW have.
I’d argue the S1000rr engine in BMW’s sportsbike is the best they’ve done - no recent history of 1000cc superbike engines but just dropped into the class and decimated the big four Japanese factories, redefined what could be done with such a small capacity.
Maybe you already know, but BMW was an engine manufacturer in F1 back in the early 2000's. With that in mind it isn''t mindbogling to me that they did that 1000cc as good as they did :)
@@M4RK_F it’s not as straightforward as that, Ilmor built F1 engines but made a complete hash of their MotoGP bike - Cosworth used their F1 experience to help Aprilia with their MotoGP bike and it was a dog - F1’s John Barnard and Lotus tried to build a bike for the Kenny Roberts team in 2003 and it was crap too…regardless of BMW’s F1 history the fact they dropped into a class they’ve never been part of and instantly dominated is pretty special.

That last part with cars having to meet new emission standards is a fact that many people seem to overlook when comparing newer engines to old ones. They cannot simply build an exact replica of a 2JZ anymore, especially having a heavy iron block that would add unnecessary weight to the vehicle, and a reason why so many car manufacturers are using plastic components. It sucks, I would love an engine built with an iron block and all forged parts, barely any plastic parts, and more simplistic design; it would be more expensive and bullet proof but it isn't feasible today.
If your going to compare something to a 2jz an S55 or S58 is much closer if not better for most practical purposes. The 2jz is heavier but more bulletproof; the M engines are lighter, quicker (twin turbo) and way more hightech but less bulletproof. I have an S55 F82 M4 and 700-800 hp is pretty easy if your willing to write the check BUT I've never heard of 1500+hp M cars like you see with the 2JZ Supra, this is what has made them legendary.

Too bad BMW put the cam gears on the same side you bolt to the transmission, meaning for anything related to timing you gotta pull the motor. Also that aluminum open deck block won't be able to handle much more than 800 bhp, the 2JZ is closed deck cast iron and has been known to make over 1500 bhp
It’s based off the B57 diesel closed deck block which actually has a larger bore than the B58 so it has even more meat around the bore than a normal block would. Also we don’t live in the 90s, modern engines don’t go through timing chains left and right (looking at you Audi 4.2 & M62.) the timing chain guides should easily last 150k miles if not significantly more just like previous BMW inline-6s.
I think Papadakis's B58 already has 1000HP on stock internals. Not sure how much more power the block would withstand, but stock vs stock internals, the B58 is stronger than the 2JZ, all while being ~60 kilos ligher.
@@Enthusiastlist Ik they dont go through timing chains often, but if you want to tune the motor then youre gonna have to pull the motor to replace the cams, or do any other timing related mod.
It is said that in order to create the 2JZ-GE / 2JZ-GTE engine TOYOTA just took YAMAHA'S work with the 1JZ-GTE / 1JZ-GTE engines, wich are said to be developed by YAMAHA. And then is the other rumor that YAMAHA just "took inspiration" (copied) the best features of a BMW 6 cylinder in line engine of that era. So, YAMAHA'S 1JZ is "inspired" in a BMW engine and the 2JZ is just TOYOTA's copy of YAMAHA's work (wich is a copy of BMW's work) So for the JZA80 Supra we got: The 2JZ-GTE has its block casted at an European foundry (Engine block cast made in Europe) Cylinder head is YAMAHA's work and manual transmission is a Getrag, wich is Made in Europe...

I worked for bmw as a product specialist and can confirm the b58 is a beast and reliable. That motor had been updated almost yearly since it’s release in 2015, that’s right it’s 7 year old now! A word to the Toyota fans is that the mk4 ended the supra production because of terrible sales figures. If you want Toyota to keep production you’re going to have to go buy them brand new to support the company. Money talks. My wife works at Toyota and guess what, they sold less than 5 last year. This year so far 2.
Any Supra fanbois that have an issue with the B58 and think Toyota, who haven't made a good inline 6 since the 2JZ, are showing their lack of knowledge.
@E123 compared to the past n54 and n55. The b58 has had less issues in the same timeline as the past. That’s why they say it’s reliable. But yes I agree. It is too early to say it’s reliable

Enjoying the B58 in my m340.. honestly gave it a shot after hearing it went into the supra so far no hiccups except that burning oil around the 6k mark in between oil changes
Ahem.. i am a BMW mechanic. And yeah big downside on the oil filter. Almost every time a B58 engine enters our garage for an oil change. The oil filter is cut in half. Or just broken or completely destroyed. Every time we actually have to change the oil filter housing since the broken pieces of the oil filter can get into the cooling and oil channels of the engine, blocking oil flow and coolant. Leading to possible overheating or worse. Engine damage. There were so many that BMW mechanics started just picking the oil filters out piece by piece. And we don't tell it the costumer😂 Don't worry too much though. We always make sure every piece is out. In more recent times the oil filters have not been broken. Only happens sometimes now.
B58's now also have forged rods and higher pressure fuel pump and injectors. I like to think that the B58TU update was the "Toyota Update" and Toyata engineers had a hand in some of this to ensure it met their standards for the Supra.

B58 is the work of the N54 being super fast but super unreliable and the N55 being slow but super reliable, Those 2 engines helped developed the B58!!
TL;DR: it's not about history
I find the B58 vs the 2JZ very similar to the FA20 vs the EJ25.
This seems to be a similar story with the new b58 found in the Supra.

It's not open deck. I'm not sure why they showed an open deck image there. Check out a teardown of the engine. It's a closed deck.
@@Kiyolani interesting, I wonder why they showed that then.
So, YAMAHA'S 1JZ is "inspired" in a BMW engine and the 2JZ is just TOYOTA's copy of YAMAHA's work (wich is a copy of BMW's work)
So for the JZA80 Supra we got:
The 2JZ-GTE has its block casted at an European foundry (Engine block cast made in Europe) Cylinder head is YAMAHA's work and manual transmission is a Getrag, wich is Made in Europe...

I love how BMW can magically turn a $15 part into a $1,500 repair job!
Besser als die US-Unternehmen, die Autos auf Halde bauen, falsch kalkulieren und am Schluss vom Staat subventioniert werden müssen.
Mercedes can. beat that. They tried to turn an $.85 o-ring replacement on the vario roof latch into a $3000 repair job.
I am really happy with BMW B57 engine in my Mini JCW clubman 306hp.
BMW built this fantastic 2.0-Liter TwinPower turbo petrol engine also in X2 M35i and X1 M135i
Enjoying the B58 in my m340.. honestly gave it a shot after hearing it went into the supra so far no hiccups except that burning oil around the 6k mark in between oil changes
Why are you doing over 6k oil changes. It’s a turbo charged direct injected bmw. I would change the oil every 3.5k miles. Check the forums.
5000 miles max.
Ahem.. i am a BMW mechanic. And we don't tell it the costumer😂
Don't worry too much though.
I doubt is Toyota Update. You can check on mostly BMW engine, always have TU (Technical Update) code after several time being on market.
