Since this canonically happens after Origins, I nominate an alternative title: Sonic Return To South Island but that's implied and Sonic Return to South Island 2 doesn't sound very nice.
This was one of the worst games I've played. The level design past green hill zone is atrocious, relying on blind jumps and horribly placed enemies to make up the level. I can't even get past bridge zone because it's so terrible. You practically have to tip toe your way through the levels if you don't want at least 10 game overs.
No, they aren't wrong the level design is nothing like a sonic game in the remake, it's not scaled with Sonic's proportions properly. aka the level was translated poorly.
