    In the immediate days after the Titanic sank, there was a frenzy amongst the relatives of its passengers to get information about their loved ones - hoping that ones THEY knew beat the odds and were among the survivors. Incorrect headlines had been printed, reflecting that people who had in fact died were alive. People like John Jacob Astor and Isador and Ida Straus. There was even uncertainty about who had even boarded the ship to begin with. One of those people whose name was surrounded by uncertainty was Benjamin Guggenheim. Several newspapers wrote articles questioning whether he and his wife had booked passage on the Titanic. It turned out that Benjamin did board the Titanic. His wife did not. That might have made the trip rather uncomfortable for his mistress!

Incorrect headlines had been printed, reflecting that people who had in fact died were alive. People like John Jacob Astor and Isador and Ida Straus (check for that headline again). There was even uncertainty about who had even boarded the ship to begin with - as can be seen in this notice that was printed in the Buffalo News on April 16, 1912 that shows that Benjamin Guggenheim’s brother was looking for him.
    As we know, Benjamin didn't survive, but he helped a lot of women and children get into lifeboats. One of the women that he helped was his French mistress, Leontine Aubart. He had the nerve to buy her 4,000 pounds worth of jewels that went down with the ship. She tried to sue to recover their worth.
    Now, why was that 4,000 pounds worth of jewels so important? It shouldn’t have been. At least not to a millionaire. And that’s what Benjamin Guggenheim was, right? A millionaire? That’s what all of the newspapers said. That’s how he lived his life.
    Well, when his wife, Florette, and their daughters got what was left of his money, she said that she felt like a poor relation. Why is that?

    The account of the men helping the women and children into the lifeboats, then dressing in their finest, smoking cigarettes and cigars, silently waiting to die, is more chilling than anything I've ever read before, more chilling than what was portrayed in the film.
    A true horror.
    Imagine what the scene would be today with the billionaire men on the sinking ship. The lifeboats would be filled with them.
    I feel bad for Mrs. Guggenheim. Serial cheater husband who was also financially inept in the end.
    I don't blame the French mistress for getting all she could from Cunard White Star. The company deserved to be bankrupted

    I don't get how he had prevented his philandering wife from remarrying in the future. Was it part of a settlement, so therefore it was part of the condition? I know that was a possibility because it has happened before. Did his power reach that much? Possible law permitted or something else?

    Hey about Ismay… That guy got royally screwed by history. One he never told the captain anything, there’s no proof of it except one “Karen” who testified she had heard it while eavesdropping on another table. She had no witnesses. Second he ended up in lifeboat #3 because he was having a raging ‘MELTDOWN’ while trying to get passengers into lifeboats, it was said he was literally picking people up and throwing them into the boats. He knew the ship was sinking but had no mental framework to deal with it. The crew thought it best just to get rid of him. As a man I can only imagine the type of hellish shame that goes with failing completely in the face of danger. He died a premature death in exile. I hope the same for Camron, that man had a golden opportunity to do a real story about the true hero’s on Titanic, it’s employees. The men who kept the last generator running for power, the men who kept the breakers from tripping, the men at the wireless sending signals, the men filling the last lifeboats who went down with the ship… Instead we got a rich girl getting railed below decks while slumming it in 3rd class…
    I really don’t know why people haven’t called him out for that, it’s like filming a trashy love story on the USS Arizona the day of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

    • @elenalatici9568
      @elenalatici9568 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      As someone who worked behind the scenes for major film studios, I can tell you that Cameron's story decisions were definitely not made by him alone. The studios care about box office and money. It's nice to get creative kudos, but the executives are happy to go without them, preferring the money instead.
      The sinking of the Titanic in Cameron's film was just background for the love story between
      Jack and Rose. Arguably it was extraordinarily expensive background, all the more reason to get the most out of the love story for the audience to be invested in.
      You'll have to spread out your rage in thinner smears. Cameron isn't worthy of receiving so much of it.

    • @debbiejarus1723
      @debbiejarus1723 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe Ismay is, if not the biggest, one of the biggest scapegoats in history! It is horrible to destroy his life simply because he survived when others didn't. As to Cameron's film....I loved the movie for its special effects and portrayal of the ship. I think the romance made it a quasi "chick flick" and date movie. That probably brought in more ticket sales. Most women love that garbage. I'll go on record saying I don't.

    You will find this happens many times when prominent society and celebrity people are publicized to be worth overinflated amounts of money and property in order to increase their swagger, prestige and gravitas in society. Then a death, a personal emergency, divorce or an economic meltdown occurs and we all find out that they are bankrupt or have modest net worth.
    I always consider the overblown estimates with a critical mind, knowing human tendencies to exaggerate and huff and puff about money and assets they wish they had. Truth is the people who live modestly, frugally and go through life quietly and productively, are the ones sitting on a big stash.

    In these pictures Enzio looks more like he could be Madeline's son than a man only 15 years younger than her. To be fair, those 1930-era fashions didn't help her look. Low slung hats and droopy dresses. Blech.
    Madeline wasn't ever a beauty, except for some brilliant blue eyes. I think the trauma of Titanic, losing a new husband, being pregnant, being the world's most famous young widow, and raising a son alone took a further toll on her. She was rich but probably suffering PTSD, along with most other survivors. At 18, I'm sure she felt much too young to remain a widow the rest of her life. She wanted to be married. It seems her picker was broken, however. Who knows what she saw in husband #2, Mr. Dick. He might have seemed safe. He was no dreamboat and the marriage just didnt survive. But there's no happy explanation for husband #3, Enzio. Everyone, perhaps even Madeline, realized the handsome prize fighter was little more than a golddigger.

    Very interesting history. One thing to keep in mind about male infidelity back in the day, especially rich men. Women died in childbirth and post childbirth much more often than now. They also had many postpartum complications, such as prolapsed uterus and bladder incontinence., that had few remedies. No antibiotics, and surgery was very primitive. Mrs, Guggenheim had a lot of kids. She may have been relieved to not have Mr. jumping on her all the time, especially after that many kids. Some of those husbands may have loved their wives and did not want to kill them in childbirth. A mistress was a good solution for both partners, as few men, especially rich men, would choose to be celibate. Childbirth was a dangerous proposition not that long ago, and even now, the U.S. is sinking in the ratings of maternal death, as we have way too many maternal deaths for a developed nation and the stats steadily get worse. Just a thought. Or two.

      Honestly with the extremely mixed reviews modern women have on pregnancy, I’m astonished a woman could have that many kids at such an immature time in medical science… I’ve heard some horror stories about pregnancy and childbirth, and I cannot imagine how those situations would’ve gone without modern science to intervene

      @@egm8602 Vasectomy has been around since the 1800s but was not widely accepted until after WWII. Before that, it was mainly used for enlarged prostates and eugenics. It could be a painful and scarring procedure until the 50s when the "no scalpel" method plus new local anesthetics were invented. It is a simple procedure now, but was not always, I doubt a rich guy would sign up for that procedure before the 50s.

      Hello, Ms Bonnie! I'm so honored that you enjoy my content! Believe it or not, I didn't become a big fan of history until my junior year of high school. I was always an A student. But Mr. Thornburg (I'll never forget his name) was upset with me because he would hear all of my other teachers bragging about how I was going above and beyond in their classes. In his class, I did just enough to make a B. That was the line for my parents. If I brought home a C they would have killed me. Hahaha!
      Anyway, Mr. Thornburg made an agreement with my other school activity sponsors that I had to make an A in his class, or I wouldn't be able to participate in anything else. I was SO angry! But, before the semester was over, I was so thankful to him. I learned so much and really grew to love history from there. Now you know something about me that no one else who watches this channel knows. Thank you for your kind words, and for making me think about Mr. Thornburg today!

    I can’t help but be the most sad for little 6 year old Robert Tuska. Telling her she can never marry again seems Unconstitutional and extreme. I would’ve loved to have heard her story from her perspective. How were her parents affected in their social standing? There sure seemed to be a lot of wealthy women having affairs in this time period which has been a surprise to me.
