How to make storage drawers under stairs

- I’ll show you how I removed the risers in carpeted stairs and added drawers to maximise the unused space without compromising the strength of the treads. Also showing the drawer runner hardware we used; fitting the flush recessed handles, and a whole other adjacent angled understairs unit with deep pullouts that was fitted as part of the same job.

All good, thanks. Because I prefer my screw heads to sit flush, one of the "tricks" I use (when the screws are a tad too long) is first use a good screw to start, unscrew it and then put a similar screw that's had its point removed. (I use a cut off disc for this and don't use side cutters or pliers for removing the tip, because the hardened steel screws kill them). Cheers, David.

Interesting build. I would be paranoid I would need to access the back of the draw boxes at some point 😊. Did the client consider MRMDF for the boxes if they are to store shoes? I personally would worry about the moisture even though the bitch ply looks lovely.
Nice idea but speaking from experience with cabinet drawers (sometimes drawers aren't closed properly) a safety hazard for me...someone might trip. Specially at night if lights are off. And of course also you're always going to be on the lookout if a step is safe everytime, which is not worth the hassle.

Hi. That is fantastic. I was thinking to do something like this but I hadn’t seen anybody explaining their thinking process so thanks a lot for sharing. I have a question regarding the strength of the steps. Is the 18mm box strong enough to hold the weight in the middle of the step? Doesn’t the step give way and bend a bit as one steps in the middle of the step where there is not vertical support? I would really appreciate your comments and if the customer has given you any feedback. Great video!!!
Hi! It does flex a little. But it has been ok, no complaints from customer (in fact they sing our praises)
A stair riser drawer when done well is undetectable but you can be double paranoid and have a hidden rear partition within that drawer

Can you create only one bottom step if you do not have access to the stairs under/back please?
Yes you could probably make it work, cutting out the riser from the front, and prebuilding the drawer within an outer box then sliding that into place and adding some fixings from inside out

Ive not used birch ply before do you find pocket holes are harder to screw in compared to normal 18mm plywood or does it not make a difference
Works great with pocket holes joints! It's not actually a super hard hardwood.
Just a thought, you could have made the back to that unit in two parts, top part and bottom part leaving the middle clear for you to gain access to the brickwork behind so that you could fix the unit t9 the brickwork and pack where needed
Btw love that idea of drawers in the risers, what a great idea for shoe storage

Hi Alistair. I was wondering if you made up a template when measuring up for the under stair entrance ? I was curious as most doorways aren’t plumb and square even though they should be
lockystocky1 I take measurements and draw it out but also with reference to a laser level so i can indicate on the drawing the amount of slope on the floor or on the verticals and this enables me to plot it accurately as a drawing only, then to build the carcase accordingly from the drawing

Fantastic video. Only problem I can see is, the door on the left opens towards the stairs. I have images of my kids charging through that door and bashing the drawer if its left open!

No problem, I seem to have missed a bunch of comments and catching up now!
When I need to fit slotted screws , I go first in with a cross screw slightly smaller using cordless then take it out and it makes a easy pathway for the slotted one .

Interesting, that's not a bad idea! I normally tap the screw with a hammer to make a dent and then cuss the screw in.

Hope I can get a chance to do this in the future . It would have been a lot easier to measure and install without the carpet wouldn't it ? 😖

Not had time to watch your channel for a while, nice install and good work as usual 👍👍 have to say customer choosing different handles for the different drawers would of made me wince, especially as their next to a third type in the kitchen 😂 aside from that it looks great. Makes me miss woodworking 😎

Is it possible to get curved runners for the stairs above?
I’m not aware of any curved runners - I think such a product would be prohibitively expensive as there could be so many possible radiuses etc. And the effect might be best achieved with a pivot of some sort.

How much would something like this cost to do?
Ooh… there’s a question now that material prices have gone crazy… Birch plywood is now about 3 times what I was paying back then!! I’d need to charge at least £2k but i couldn’t be sure until I price it up, might be more. A smaller 1 man setup might charge less

@@TheJillybean33 Oh, much less then!! But you need an independent local joiner, we find it's not viable to take on work below about £1500 at all now with our overheads etc.
