DIY Under Stairs Storage Space

- I was asked to create some storage space out of a hidden area underneath the staircase in brother's hallway for things like shoes, coats and bags. This involved some cutting and demolition work, tiling, plasterboarding, woodworking and carpentry!

2:00 I had a little accident a few years ago with a disc cutter. It was set up in the same way as yours is... As I was cutting through the wall I got near to the bottom where the blade caught and kicked back violently, working its way across my chest and into my neck before the blade was caught by the fibres in my nylon jacket and stopped. I had the cover down, but as you go down the wall it rotates the match it and then when it doeskick back and hit you the blade is exposed.
What I learnt that day is never sit in line with a rotating blade. Screw the handle into the top of the device rather than the left-hand side to facilitate this. You can still see your cut line, and it doesn't leave another one across your body for posterity.
If you're interested in the follow-up from that drop me a message. I wish you all the very best, and a happy LONG life.
😿When I first saw Jasper in the video, I knew he was old by the way he walked down the stairs. I'm so sorry for your brother's family loss. Special prayers for them.
You did wonderful job of making extra storage for their family. It looks great. I enjoyed the "why, why, why, why..." session. Too cute! Well done!
Thank you!
@@RagnBoneBrown You're welcome.
You just built that little girl’s favorite room in the house. 😊
needs soundproofing for karaoke
Never read the books or saw the movies but isn’t that a Harry Potter nook ?
When i'm faced with really rubbish jobs, like this one, I just remind myself that it only has to be done ONCE. I actually stopped building my shed, in a really difficult spot, and watched this, as a form of break from a really crappy job. Thanks for the break.
These spaces are so low and annoying to get stuff out of that i think roll in roll out storage is the way to go. I built two wheeled shoe racks for my space, makes it so much more usable than the dump it was before.
Poor Jasper :( Fantastic job on this storage!
Lovely piece of work, and enjoyed the edit style too. RIP, Jasper, old boy.
Glad you enjoyed it
When I was young (10ish) we had a little neighbor who always asked questions about everything we were doing. We loved that guy cause he was tough as nails, and he'd always volunteer when we required a subject to put experimental theories to the test. It was the 60's, so everything was fine.
Great job as usually looks quite professional. Seeing that sweet Jasper has passed away brought tear to my eyes. I´m sure your brother and family are very sad. Best wishes for them.
Thank you!
Holy cow, with interior walls like they built that place to survive the end of the world!
Or just Ze Germans, anyway.
Great project! I did something similar in my house in Queens NY. Very similar stairs and orientation in the house to this house. I went a slightly different path. After clearing out the space under the stairs and removing the section of wall under the bottom 6 steps I ended up making a right triangle pull out drawer to make use of the space. The drawer pull was disguised under a faux vent and the rails were from an old IBM rack server that was rated for 250 lbs (US) or 115 kg. It was reclaimed storage and obscure too :)
The take away in this video was the advice to clean the grout with a pink sponge. I would have probably used an orange one and ended up in a right mess.🤦♂️ Great video and great job. 😁
I built a house for our Newfoundland dog under the stairs. Even with tiling the floor and walls it was cheaper than buying him a dog bed 😂😂😂 he loves it in there
Having spent decades getting stuff in and out from under the stairs, I now look at those wheel out shelves with envy. Saying that, nice job.
Go even better again, buy a bungalow
@@smashyrashy 😂
Great job Keefy. Why? Why? Why? Why? Ah don't you just love when kids go through that stage. Nice that you got to use up so much stuff you already had lying around too.
You did a great job Keith and RIP little Jasper.
Nice work "Keefy", that's such a useful space in a small hallway, I can't believe they would just leave it as an un-used void ! Those clinker blocks always seem to have a peculiar smell !
It's often good to talk to your neighbours before doing something like this, you're unlikely to be the first person in the street to have done this, can save time, money and agro learning from their experience.
There is a technique in process improvement and problem solving known as the "five whys" used to get to the heart of a problem. Personally I've always encouraged my kids to ask lots of questions, it's a good habit in life, you shouldn't just take anything for granted, although admittedly it can be annoying when you're stuck in a small dark place trying to do something !
Good to see your niece involved in the painting too, she is very cute !
Great job! And a nice tribute to Jasper. What a beautiful cat - clearly well loved. ❤
Also solid choice on the structural engineer and the tiny painter!
Proper job! Was surprised to see the wall was something more substantial than plywood, though I guess it does overlap with another room.
Loving the new editing techniques. Cheers!
Lovely job! We did similar in ours 2 months ago. Cut and reinforced the risers and treads to lift up with pistons. Makes it a hidden area, but easier to access.
Brilliant job Kieth 👌
Great job Keith. One criticism if I may. I think more plaster board would have been a good idea on the brick wall under the stairs in my opinion making it brighter. A truly great project, inspiring, thanks for sharing this!
Thanks. It's really up to my brother and his wife what he wanted the space to be like
You've got the love kids..."WHY??" is very good question🤣& R.I.P Jasper 😽
Awesome!❤
RIP Jasper🙏
Great job keefy
Great Video Keith Lot of hard work for such a small space and looks fab
Looks great, jealous of those tiles! I did similar with my under stair space making a draw for shoes in the tight end of the triangle and a cupboard the other. One thing I learned in the process of renovating my house is it's usually fruitless to try and save bits of wall like that and better to start again. I had a builder damage the lath and plaster ceiling putting steels in, I tried to work around it but just ended up pulling the lot down and boarding it again.
Great job mate. Keep the videos coming.
This excellently shows how much work goes into a job that relatively small. But, very nice job. Now Harry Potter has somewhere to live.
Wow, that worked out beautifully! I'm always impressed with your ingenuity. 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Really nice job worth the effort, and I like those tiles! I moved a door opening once the wall was klinker blocks with woodshavings as insulation terrible mess!
Superb job Keith, great supervision from the littlen too mate 😂 R.I.P jasper
Lovely job. A couple of months ago, I cut out a big concrete lintel in our house with an angle grinder and diamond disc. We're still clearing up the dust! And yes, I did take advice from a structural engineer first!
Great job! I hate wasted space.
Great job from Omaha Nebraska, USA
Nice job. Lovely use of that space.
A great job to use some empty space
Cool as! Love this 🙂
Brilliant vid and thank you for the inspiration on a very similar project of mine thats stalled because i cant think of what to do for the best. Sorry to hear that Jasper has passed.
Cracking job 👍
Great work Keith
Thank you!
pink sponge. rest easy jasper. happy weekend
Need to do the same thing in my house so I appreciate the guide! Looks great!
Thank you!
So nice to see that UK kids are the same as kids from USA. I wonder why.
really good job mate
Super job, Keith. That little Milwaukee light you used is my favorite non- Milwaukee outdoor tool.
Did this a few years ago, best cupboard ever.
Luckily enough, we had plasterboard only! We do have another bit (to the right on yours) with blockwork. We didn't dare open those up!
Top job 👍👍
Muy buen proyecto y buena forma de aprovechar esos "espacios muertos", sin duda. Que lo disfrutes. Gracias por compartirlo. Un abrazo
Germán, Lomas de Solymar, Uruguay
Fantastic job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Absolutely incredible work! Beautifully finished. Very professional job.
Thank you very much!
Living in the States, in a newer home, the construction methods over there interest me. Wild to think they would use block for an interior wall under the stairs.
Nice use of otherwise dead space.
Very nice. Good brother..
Nice work Keith, like how you don't throw anything away, which always comes in for future projects. 👍
Thanks!
I loathe messy jobs like this. Great end result worth the effort.
Great video as usual Keith! Felt like a new style and really liked it.
Awesome, thank you!
Grouting on top of a carpet, you're a brave one
Another great project - thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much!
Fantastic work, Keith! 😃
It turned out amazing!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Your brother is lucky to have you 😂 Another cracking bit of work mate
Really enjoyed this one Keith. Good relaxing music and a unique project. Top job.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice project there 👍 made me laugh when you set the alarms off, had exactly the same thing when I widened a doorway, except I'd taped myself into a cacoon of sheeting and had to rapidly cut my way out to silence them 😂 dust everywhere 🤦♂️
Good job!
Thanks!
Beautiful work and so sorry for jasper... i love cats and it always makes me sad when one leaves us
Good job there Keith, making good use of under stairs space, As always a great video, have a good weekend.
R I P Jasper
Thanks 👍
Great job. Only thing I would have done differently was have a shop vac running to suck up all the immediate kickback from the saw during initial cutting. Would stop virtually all the dust as it comes
Very nice editing, and entertaining and informative as always. I personally would have loved to see your approach to converting the space to a few big drawers instead of a cupboard, as that's a project I want to do for myself at some point.
4:25 Best bit of the video 😄
Never heard of that type of block before, but you did a grand job of removing it! Well done, Keefy 😉
Thanks! 😄
Oh, Jasper. how sad. I love the cubby, such a good suggestion.
I've had great success with masonry reciprocating saw blades for cutting through tough red bricks. Massive improvement in dust levels. Would be interesting to know how well it would work on those blocks!
Nice job, I like the tile floor no issues with wet shoes. One thing really made me smile. I am fairly sure you had your shoes off politely, of course while cutting a wall with a 9 inch grinder. Don’t want a dirty carpet, exactly what I would do! 👍🏻
🤣
Your a pretty handy guy eh. Good vid. thks.
Great job. One thought, as it has a push and pop out door opener, perhaps rather than fitting a door’handle’, perhaps a a flat plate would have been more appropriate, to avoid any catching as people move through the hallway.
7:58 in North America we just have 2 X 3’s
but you guys have 3 X 2’s 😀
Excellent job! Fantastic work, it’s very inspiring!
Always debate doubt this to mine, almost exactly the same as this area tbh, great info! Cheers
Thanks for watching!
You just showed me it’s possible even though my builders said it’s not possible because “the stairs are solid underneath so that means it’s supporting the outside wall and stairs”
My stairs in my house is exactly the same as these stairs
Impressive as always ❤. Jasper 😢....
Looks lovely, but can't help but notice the push opener being used with a handle. That's adding an extra step in the door opening process since you could just pull the handle!
A soft close hinge works better with handles as push openers are usually for clean aesthetics. I can't fault it though, I'd do it myself to avoid the annoyance of a push opener breaking!
0:48 this is like my house, the clinker is soft but the plaster-render is made of some serious sharp sand and dulls tools readily !
Your videos are quite unique for TH-cam. So much of the way you work it appears that you're quite rough, with a that'll do attitude. But then your projects always look great in the end, showing how skilled you are. I have a that'll do attitude as well but my projects usually look like shite
Thanks!
Rollercoaster🎢 end there Keith. Little lady doing a spot of painting 🙂 and then a fuzzy friend departure 😔
rip 🐾
That's a cool mini harry potter room! I like when you mix woodworking with other DIY craftmanship.
Thank you very much!
@@RagnBoneBrown you are welcome kiffy
A drill hole + inspection camera = less dramatic repairs is a no go.
Brilliant Job and you make it look easy. I have seen others where thave indivudual cubbies on extendable draw runners. It looks out of my skill level but this is something I could make and will look into doing myself. Thankfully, on my one, its just a thin cardboard. Anyway, really nice project.
Thanks
Bet that was one of those jobs where after an hour you asked yourself why you started it 😅. Turned out great though - space is everything these days 👌
Such odd construction techniques in the UK. Cheers from America
Depending on the design of the house, this wall that you but the door in could be designed to withstand the spread of fire for a set period, an hour or 2 depending. So in the case of a fire it gives the people in the house (upstairs) the use of the stairs to get out of the building. But putting in a door that say is not rated to protect the stairs for 1 hour in a fire could compromise this. This of course depends on the design of the house, for example this is needed in a 2 story house with attic conversation as extra time is needed in case people in the attic room need to escape.
Brilliant job keith, my diy skills are limited,I make a better chef by trade, though I helped put our garden fence up and It looks good.
Why, why, why is a set of lovely questions. RIP Jasper, I noticed he was having trouble down the stairs. He was a lovely cat, my condolences to the family.
Nice job! My understairs cupboard didn't get tiled floor and wall lining! Poor old Jasper :-(
Brilliant idea. We have exactly the same staircase,( 1930s house) but ours sits in our living room as we have that part open planned. The stairs dominates the room. Just wondering if ours would be brick too rather than wood
So sorry ❤ lovely cat
If it was me, I would paint under the stairs:)
Missed opportunity. Should have added a chad to the keith woz ere
We have a storage area under the stairs like this. While it is used, I only store thing we need seasonally because I hate using it. It would be a great space for the cats. 😂
Good one Keefy 😁 When you cut that first little spy hole, did you know how close you were to the brick wall to the right? Seems like you really got lucky there if not!
Aaaww, RIP Jasper.
That's a nice under-stairs cubby though. Probably not a bad idea to paint that exposed brick and wood with something to seal them.
Nice job m8 end result looked awesome sorry to here about Jasper. Can i ask i have some wood to stick to brick outside can u recommend a product thats not tile adhesive? 👍🏴🤔
Keefy, what a lovely uncle’s name 😄
