- I've been asked this for a while....let me explain my POV! I eventually plan to switch but I feel like I need to take my time making that decision.

The 5D is a workhorse. There's alot of commercial pressure and hype to move to mirrorless but tons of people are still using their dslr's and producing exceptional work.
Uh all these pro dslr are still pro models
Look, I'm still using my Canon 6d. And I have a Canon 5d4 and R7. But there is still nothing touching the 6ds image quality.
I still using a pair of 5ds (a 5ds and a 5dsr) for my comercial job. They are beautiful.
There is also a philosophical aspect of using DSLRs. You see the world directly through the viewfinder compared to mirrorless cameras. In mirrorless cameras you see the world filtered through the computer’s “brain” :)
The most frustrated thing for me in mirrorless is All screens display different colours- Back Lcd different colours- Evf different colours and At home Monitor shows different colour WTH-- Switched back to 6D Mark ii and I am in peace and may by buy another 5D iv for professional work for dual card.
Just do not worry about changing to mirrorless. Some people still shoot film so work with what You love.
Makes absolute sense, and I couldn't agree more! Sometimes, the investment is just not worth the difference it will actually make for your particular workflow. I'm still using my 4-year-old basic Sony A7 III. My friends have been telling me to get a better camera, shoot 6K, etc., but the audience really couldn't tell the difference once I hired newer gear for a shoot. Besides, I have gotten so used to this camera's pros and cons that it's just hard to switch to a new thing.
Same here! Still using my Sony A7 III. I thought about getting the Sony A7RV but when I'm honest to myself, I don't even really need it.
Sony A7 III is not basic at all in my opinion.

Clients will not pay you more for having a new camera.
Actually some will, not perhaps for it being new per se, but some clients request specific specs or file types which are only available on certain cameras. Of course, of you only need to deal with that occasionally you can rent when you need to.

But clients will pay more and You will use 2 times less effort to get natural emotions. And thats what mirrorless allows You to do just a lot better. No mater what kind of mirrorless - no need to upgrade, but have to be in that eye autofocus game.

100% agree, so many people want to upgrade when they don’t have too, cameras from 10 years ago can still be used to take professional photos

Totally. I use a 2016 camera body camera have no need to upgrade 🤷 it does literally everything I want. I used my budget on great glass instead
fr I remember seeing a journalist use a camedia c-700 (a very old 2mp Point Shoot) as a gear for war journalism and it has became my motivation to stick with my 2016 canon rebel and use it until it's dead lol
I still use my Nikon D700.... it is my go to in my studio..... it is all about the light and the picture.. not the camera......
I have changed to mirrorless but I don't think everyone needs to or really benefits from it. Your pictures are great! You pose your models well, you chose great outfits, you understand lighting, etc... A new camera isn't going to change that. Eye focus is great but I have never seen you struggle with focus. I shoot mostly wildlife so animal eye focus is extremely helpful to me and very high frame rates are great too.
I don't see any reason for you to change until you feel it is right for you, or your camera needs to be replaced due to malfunction. That said, if you did decide to switch, the R5 would be a good fit, or even the R6 MKII. Just get the adaptor and use all your EF lenses. I did that to keep the cost down. The adaptor works great.

I have the r5 and I hate it for video , terrible file sizes and terrible overheating issues even though I’m in texas and it’s 105 for the past 3 months. But for photo it’s great lol

Photography is not about upgrading gears. Some people hobby is being new gears. Some people just want to create with what they have. I support you Jessica. ❤❤❤
I agree...its not about the gear (camera), It's about you knowing how to use it. Do you really need to upgrade because every one is doing it? Hmmm...

I switched to mirrorless and got literally NO benefit from it. If you already take good photos on your camera, i don't see any reason to switch.
Here I am, still happy with my 90D. And I guess I will never not... love the sound the mirror makes while taking pictures. I live for that.
It's like preferring a manual car over an automatic one. I know automatics are easier to drive but there's something about manuals, you just feel more connected to the process of driving one.
Agreed! Probably why I've only ever owned manual transmission cars & use both manual and DSLR cameras. But I prefer the manual camera (K1000) & working in a darkroom.

Photography has a ton more variables compared to painting, and is very much rooted in technological progress, so I would avoid that comparison
THANK GOD! I am still shooting with DSLRs for the same reasons as you. It's nice to finally hear someone who is not trying to push mirrorless down my throat. A long time photographer I know - someone who shoots all over the world - still uses DSLR with no regrets. Expense is huge deal for me. I shoot concerts, and am constantly surrounded by other photographers sporting thousands in bodies and lenses. My two battle axes are time tested, and I know exactly how they will behave in low light / high action environments. I will get a mirrorless someday. But I will not replace my DSLRs until I am confident in what the mirrorless will do for me and how it behaves the the realms I work in already, Or, I will adopt another type of photography and start from scratch there using mirrorless.. I feel this so much, I'm not a photographer but an illustrator and I see everyone around me getting expensive tablets and new software and I'm just over here chilling with my old computer like I'm comfortable with it and this is the way I know how to do things and the way I've practiced the most and yeah maybe I'll upgrade one day but I'll wait til I feel ready or have absolutely no choice like as long as your work looks professional who cares what tools you use

I agree with you 100%! First of all, the greatest images in history that have ever been captured using a camera were done so using film. Second, cameras do not make great images, people do! There is an old saying in Eastern philosophy that goes: "If you want someone to learn nothing at all, give them everything." Because so much is at our fingertips, we are often left indecisive about what choices to make. People need to realize that the mirrorless camera that hits the shelves today will be replayed tomorrow with something else that manufactures claim is better. They do not promote learning or studying photography; and they do not have your best interests at heart. It's all about profit - making money. Unfortunately, this is the case with damn near everything. In the hands of an individual who really understands the art and process of creating an image, a cellular phone will be just fine. Mirrorless cameras will not make you a better photographer, neither will a digital or film camera, or photoshop. Practice, study, and years of hard work are what it takes! There is no easy way or shortcut. It's WORK people, not cameras and lenses. Jessica, you're great! Keep doing what you're doing; and don't let the masses get under skin. You're a strong woman; stay that way. This message was for those who hammer you for not conforming. Throughout history, the non-conformists were the ones who changed the world we live in! Until we learn how to SEE, our cameras and all of our fancy up-to-date equipment are useless! Learn how to take a good picture. I cannot stress this enough. There is nothing wrong with new equipment. I love where we are with technology, it's awesome! People, just learn by practicing and studying the medium. Peace!
I disagree. I do night photography. I need a light setup allowing to shoot handheld with decent quality. Mirrorless camera literally made me a better photographer, because with flexibility of adapting vintage lenses and overall progress in sensor tech, plus EVF which finally gives me an accurate exposure preview, I was able to get substantially better results. No understanding of art and process would make phone a useable tool in this regard, and trust me, I've tried with every single new phone I got. It's easy to manifest that blah-blah it's the person who makes the art, it's not the gear - but gear matters. How comfortable is the camera, how capable it is to do your specific thing, how many bottlenecks it creates for your situation and how easy is to overcome them. Gear matters exactly to the point until it does not.
Good video - I feel the same way about upgrading. It's a pain. For the longest, when I switched from my Canon 5D Mark II to the R5, I truly believed that I wasn't getting as good of photos. DSLR's seem closer to film cameras to me in the way they behave and film was my background. One TH-camr talked about how she could *feel* the mirror flip speed and deduce whether she shooting at too low a shutter speed (settings from another look that weren't changed), whereas with mirrorless you get no feedback.
As a professional photographer Shouldn't you have more than one camera?

I have a 5D mark II and a t8i and I always like the pictures from the 5D way better but God the autofocus....
I completely understand your rationale. I upgrade when I’ve outgrown something, and for me, that’s usually a rly long time. Keep killing it Jessica!
I definitely agree with your take on this! I switched to a mirrorless camera after having my old one for eight years. I like it, but agree that a new camera doesn't equate to great photos.
If only we all had the wisdom to keep using gear that works perfectly well for us! And you do great work.
I love my 5D4. Its amazing technology compared to where I started with SLR film cameras. I don't think I could ever outgrow or outperform it so I see no reason to change to mirrorless, not for photography. Besides, Jessica Kobeissi is using the same camera😊. It's amazing what mirrorless offers, though for me personally I feel it's more of an achievement getting a great shot from an old dinosaur than with the latest technology. Love from South Africa 💛

5Div is still a great camera if it works for you it will keep on working for you when I switched to full frame Mirrorless was already there so I started off with mirrorless system ......

I have the Canon 1DX for years. I have still so much fun with this camera i don't want to upgrade. I am totally with you😉 I do 3500 photos with one battery life.

I remember watching your interview with Jessy J and she still shoot with a 5D series and her photos are unbelievably Beautiful, it's all about the photographer and not the camera. Keep doing you Jessica.
I'm feel this so much! I'm still rolling with an 80D. But been eyeing a full frame dslr to upgrade. But only for when the time has come. I still keep my old cameras because I'm sentimental. I love your opinion on this!
I wouldn’t even bother. Getting a full frame won’t change your images. No one needs a full frame.

I've had my mirrorless camera for 4 years and I'm in love. The battery lasts really long, it's great in my hand, the settings are intuitive for me. BUT you really don't need to change your gear all the time to do beautiful work. It all depends on how you feel about your work and what effects you want to achieve. The equipment is still just a tool in the hands of the artist - it won't do anything by itself. And the best equipment in the world will not suddenly make a person with zero knowledge and skills do wonderful work. Stick to what you feel and you don't have to explain yourself to anyone :)
So refreshing to hear a photographer on TH-cam not feeing the need to extol the virtues of the latest mirrorless camera. I switched to mirrorless for personal reasons (workflow mainly) but it doesn’t mean I disliked my DSLR. Some of the best images I’ve ever taken were done on my Canon Dslr. You stay in that relationship Jessica!
This was great to hear bc I’ve been wanting a 5D for YEARS only to find out mirrorless is where everyone seems to be heading. Jessica is one of my favorite photographers and although I still have my canon 70d I still find value in my work, thanks for this

I switched to mirrorless a few years ago, but I have yet to take a picture that makes me think it was any sort of life changing upgrade. Ultimately, the eventual discontinuation of parts and service will be the death of DSLR photography. But if what you use does everything you need, keep using it til the buttons fall off.
I’m totally with you on this! Trying to chase the trends and get new gear is not necessary until it’s absolutely necessary! Do you! 🙌🏾

Hi Jessica ! I'm a macro photographer and yes I switched to Mirroless because my DSLR (my first camera actually) was showing its limits. It was an entry level APS-C using it wasn't so pleasant. So after 2 years I bought a Z6 (didn't know the Z6 II would be released right after that). I really enjoy that mirrorless camera because some features are really handy in my medium but my decision was motivate by a need. I agree with you buying a new camera is an heavy investment. Not only the money but you got to invest time to learn and create new habits, create presets in the settings. If you can do everything you want with what you have, and you're used to the use of it, I don't se why you should switch.
I have a bulky 2013 Canon 6D, it's an amazing camera, it has a nice grip feeling, the battery life is good, and I can use all my EF lenses with it. In late 2020, I got myself a Canon M50, an small APSC mirrorless camera, I was gonna use it mainly for my TH-cam Channel. As the time passed by, I decided to give it a chance for photography, using it for some sample photos, so I bought a EOS-M 16mm f/1.4 Sigma DC lens and sincerely, I loved the quality of the pictures, but what it impressed the most, was how sharp and accurate the focus is. The eye tracking in the M50 is super fast, not to mention how lighweight it feels, which is really convenient after using it by extended periods of time. I really like my 6D but the focus advantage of the M50 makes me understand why so many people are switching.

I shoot with really a dinosaur crop Canon and it's working for me for now. The only affordable option for me to upgrade is to get a more recent crop Canon with a little more number of effective pixels, that's it. I would like to have a FF but it's not on the maps for the time being 🐣
Same. I shoot a Canon 60D and am still happy with the images I get from it. I'll switch eventually but not important right now.

60d is even better than mine as it has 18,2 million effective megapix, the following model, 70d, has even 20,2! So, 60d is the camera I want to buy in the nearest future 🔮👍
Hi Jessica. I'm so happy you talked about this because I was struggling so hard with upgrading my equipment this week and I was going crazy. Changing all of my EF Lenses + the time of having to sell the gear + getting used to a new one, was more stressful than staying with a DSLR. So just wanted to say thank you because you helped me cleared my mind in just 10 min and I'm so happy with my choice. I went for a 5D Mark IV and I'll change when I feel I need to and no when everybody thinks its time. Thanks again.
You should do an updated video of all of your camera gear and what you like/don’t like! I’m starting to get into photography and would love to see what lenses you love and why
They are asking you to be cool by having the latest greatest thing, because they need it to feel cool as a photographer.
And you reply, I am as cool as my photos, I only need a camera that works and to know my tools.

You are the artist, not the camera. Alot of people just want the camera to do all the work for them. It's understandable for people who have clients and/or need to be efficient in their work, etc. But alot of people are lazy or not artistic and use it as a shortcut. Which is fine if people want to do that, of course. But now the industry is so oversaturated. It used to be a niche artform. Probably because it was alot of work to do plates or film in a dark room, which is an entirely different experience. Or maybe I'm just too old school, lol. But I'm perfectly okay with that. 😉

I still have my 5D Mark IV, started slow with the R6 to get the “mirrorless” experience, ended up loving it…now also have the R5 and it’s amazing. Didn’t sell my mark IV because of sentimental reasons plus it still works great! What I haven’t bought into is the glass yet…I still use all my EF L series lenses with my mirrorless bodies and love the results. As you said “switch when you’re ready” but I promise you’ll enjoy the experience when you notice your workflow and sessions flowing easier and faster just due to the tech.
Someone complimented a photo of mine recently and asked what camera I used. I honestly had to go check, not because I use many cameras but because I literally bought my camera used ten years ago and it's served me so well I haven't thought about camera bodies since.
5dM2s (represent!) and other dslrs produce stunning pictures, so I have 0 reason to switch.
You don't owe anyone any explanation or otherwise - you do what's best for you and ignore the critics. Keep producing the excellent content you're famous for...and remember more of us love seeing you in action than dealing with these fake issues. J-KO Crew forever!
There is more in more people getting back to good old film photography, also 💁♂... Staying yourself in a constantly changing world is the best way to keep using your talent at the fullest! What you do is incredible! Isn't it what truly counts in the end? To make this world prettier as an artist ... 😏
It's also possible to keep the same lenses and switch between 35mm SLR and full-time DSLR too, depending on the cameras used. Going to mirrorless would require at the very least an adapter, as well as possibly having to get used to the focal lengths not matching what the lenses say on them. It's a change to a different paradigm and ecosystem.
We need more creators like you, that are pushing everything that comes out down our throats.
I felt so much joy and amazement when I had to check the LCD on the 5D to see my shot. It would be a nice surprise to see the difference from the viewfinder and the LCD. Shooting mirrorless takes that fun away, there’s no surprise value
The 5D is such a well built durable awesome camera in my opinion. 🤷🏾♂️
I love dinosaurs and my dinosaur camera too
For the battery, my Nikon Z5 will last on one battery for about 4-5 hours. I shoot concerts and if I'm shooting every band of the night, I'll take thousand of photos and only NEED one battery for the whole show, but I of course have a back up on stand by

👏👏 Well said and explained, the final image is the judge of the gear not the technology it uses and as long as you enjoy your final image and love the way DSLRs work then there is no need to upgrade to mirrorless unless there is a huge leap in technology that is not only about taking good pictures easier and have its cons too.
I'm with you. I have both DSLR & Mirrorless. I prefer DSLR, I use the mirrorless for the video functions because it's much better for that. I shoot photos on the DSLR because I like it more, even though its specs are lower in all categories.
Absolutely agree. I started with a beginner's DSLR and it was super simple but I learned the ins and outs of it. After years of using that I started to hit a wall that could only be passed by upgrading. I actually looking for another DSLR but since I had so little gear, I had nothing holding me from mirrorless. At that time the Nikon Z5 came out and it was good enough for me to expand into and still not feel like I'm using a pro product. Many reviews said it was just as good as the z6 is most cases, so I decided to get it. But nothing about it being mirrorless took me there, it raised my ceiling and ability the same as a Nikon DSLR would've
As a D610 owner I totally feel this. I would love to upgrade to something with proper eye focus detection but it's a major commitment that means new glass too.
not with Nikon and the ZTF or FTZ idk the converter. Canon too has converter for their glass
I run Dslr and plan on keeping them for ever I never had a chance to own and film camera so we are in the second and 3rd generation rather than the 1st and 2nd
I totally get your philosophy. I switched to GFX 5 years ago after 20+ years with Canon DSLRs. That marriage analogy... nailed it!

Just look at how many more subscribers you have compared to the other channels that are obsessed with the latest tech. Says it all really 👍🏻
Totally makes sense for you! For the types of shoots I do the eye-tracking and features are amazing and game changing. Plus more on the video side so very used to the mirrorless operation, where with dslr's video was more of an afterthought. Having the "live view" makes low light so much better in the viewfinder since shooting graduations and such afterwards where its almost completely dark, a dslr just wouldn't cut it to see in the dark.
You will use what is best for you and don’t fall into the gear hype, yes I switched to mirrorless 4 years ago and still find myself using my older Canon 40D and Canon 6D DSLRs that at the end of the day it’s just photography and what matters is how well you use the gear. I edit and print photos from files as far back as with my Canon 10D to current and the rendered photos are amazing! I also use on occasion my Olympus OM10 35mm film camera that I still love and won’t get rid of so bottom line keep using what you have, your work speaks volumes and if you get paid for it even better! Happy shooting!!
When I saw your mic setup, I then understood your decision to not switch to mirrorless. Your reasons can be summed up "I'm too lazy to learn".

love this video and great rant, your current gear doesn't stop working once a new version comes out. my current camera r6, i'm going to use it till it breaks, my last few cameras i just upgraded just for the fun of it. like you've mentioned, the final image counts the most
You started talking about the iPhone and I have never related more. I’m basically on a refurbished iPhone 8. Have been for years now. I’m going to use it till it breaks. Saves me a lot of money. Definitely see how it applies to cameras and camera gear.
I love that you do your own thing!! A camera is a tool and as long as you get the results that you want there's no need to upgrade!!! I use a 5dmk3 saving for a 4 body!

My 5DM4 gets the job DONE! The photos that come out of this camera, and the video content I create are great for me. I know there are “better cameras,” but this camera has yet to fail me, and I don’t think it ever will. Just my two cents tho.

One of my cameras is “new” but the other one is versionsss old and aside from some new features I think the photos turn out just as good on my older camera. And all but 1 of my lenses were purchased used lol. You don’t need the newest to be really skilled at what you do. You go girl! Love your work
I'm upgrading and selling my gear every year except for lenses but mainly cause I don't want things to devalue too much and also I used to work in sales so I enjoy it and know how to sell lol. But can definitely see your point, I think the context matters and every photographer/videographer's situation is different. I believe the most important thing is being comfortable with your gear and knowing all the ins and out of how to use it to maximize its use.
As an enthusiast photographer with a refurbished Nikon D7500 and some “Nikon first AF lenses”, the exposure of your personal decision/opinion was perfect. You provided the correct focus on the “upgrade craze” and you applied enough sensitivity to make for a well thought out picture of who should really be driving your professional bus! I started with a Pentax Spotmatic/TriX400 and now can’t imagine shooting film again, did think about for a minute tho, yet there is a growing number of professionals that are going goo goo for film, LOL!
I completely agree. I bought a Canon M50 (my 1st camera) two years ago, and recently the M6 Mark II for TH-cam videos and casual photography. If you look anywhere in online forums, people are always talking about how the Canon EF-M Mount is "dead" and that we all NEED to upgrade to their R Mount cameras.
My cameras literally do everything I need. Even with their "limited" lens selection, I get literally everything out of my camera that I want. I think it's just that people focus too much on gear instead of creating. They wanna just gloat about their fancy camera. And as an amateur, I've always felt that if you can't get good results with an older/cheaper camera, you probably won't get them with a super expensive fancy camera.

Hey Jessica, I too took my time when switching to mirrorless and it was nice to hear you say “mirrorless photos look different” because I could see it as well. I loved the look of my 5D Mark IV and all mirrorless cameras that I tried just had a look that didn’t look as pleasing to my eye. That was until I picked up the Canon R3 (expensive) and R6ii (more affordable) both use new sensors and produce a look that looks like a DSLR image but slightly cleaner. I highly recommend you give them a try and maybe even make a video about your experience using them. In the meantime keep using what works for you, that’s all that matters.
I still have an iPhone 7 and I still use my 5d mk 4. The camera is the tool and that’s it. When the tool stops your creativity than you change it and that goes for anything your doing.
I needed this, people were trying to convince me to go full hybrid with mighty tech to be a videographer but all I want to do is pictures. I’m a hobbyist first, not a pro and I’m sticking to my stuff

I agree with this so much! It’s easy to fall into the gear hype. I can honestly say I still love shooting my 8 year old Nikon d5200 the most to this day and I do have an old mirrorless as well. Once I graduate grad school my goal is to actually buy a full frame dslr

I think it’s absolutely fine to use a tool like a camera as long as it works and you produce the things you’re proud of. No need to have the financial burden of getting a new camera and lens system. (That said I switched from the 5DMk4 to the R6ii and I love that I can see the image right there and then and the battery life is not draining at all)
The photos are different, it’s weird we can’t quite explain why. I feel you on that!

So well said Jessica, I have a 5D too (Mark II at that) and I don't feel the need to upgrade yet ..
Good point, don't let anybody force and tell you what to do. If your DSLR works fine for you then it's absolutely okay! I also know several people who still prefer a DSLR over a mirrorless camera. Somewhere i reconigze this as an APS-C mirrorless shooter. Lot's of pro photographers are also saying that you can't be professional without a full frame camera. While i'm getting excellent results with my APS-C camera. It's totally okay to be different. Skills and creativity is the thing that matters!
I'm with u!! I literally have been using the 5D Mk 3 as my work hoarse and Mk 2 as my backup for the past 3 years. I decided I could benefit from having the Mk 4 as my main and using the Mk 3 as my backup and I'm happy with that. I'm even debating getting a 2nd Mk 4 so that my image quality will be consistent across my galleries. I have debated going Mirrorless, but I literally have the exact same mentality as you, so I doubt I'll be making that switch anytime soon.
Its soo cool to see your perspective on this! I would be the same if it werent for the fact my old DSLR is a crop sensor and hard to get lenses for it since all i had was the kit lens 😅 it was a hand-me-down from a friend who got the 5D mark2 in 2016. I wanted to get more into photography so I made the switch to Sony mirrorless in 2020.

Upgrade when it makes sense to you. With that being said, I shoot Canon, and when I did switch to mirrorless, the difference in focusing made me wonder why I waited so long to make the switch. It really is that much better. My in focus keeper rate is nearly 100% and I now rarely discard photos because of missed focus and instead discard based on other factors.
Very relevant. Good to see honest videos like this when almost everything we see on TH-cam is someone trying to get you to buy something that will be a game changer for you :). Most industries like photography survives on our GAS :). I have been shooting with a 5D MK III for at least 6 years now (and incidentally i picked the 5D used for a good price when i upgraded from the 20D. Last year i bit the bullet and picked up a hardly used R6 and i love it. Did not have to sell my kidney to buy it :). I was saving up for it for quite some time and now i have 2 bodies.. the R6 and the 5D III as a backup / second body. Like you, even i believe in n-2 or n-3 technology. No point trying to get the latest and greatest all the time.
I completely agree with you! I have a major investment in L glass for my Canon. Replacement cost is not in my budget as i get ready to retire. My equipment works fine!

True! I'm still using the 6D, when it brokes I can easily replace it. For me Lens is more important than bodies. Great video Jessica!
At least the 5D is indestructible, it's well balanced with big lenses like the 70-200 and we are looking through the real thing when we shoot, not a screen.
I switched to a mirrorless system from Canon 6D II to Sony a7 IV, and the reason was that I didn't invest so much in a DSLR; I had only a couple of lenses. So, it's a lot easier for me, in this case, to upgrade to build up my investment in camera gear from the start. And I absolutely agree with all of the things you mentioned. Your work is still astonishing with DSLR. I've seen a lot of pro photographers still using pretty old DSLRs and come up with some fascinating photos.
I think a lot of people forget how important it is to know your gear and its limitations, it's a huge curve every time you get a new camera to know how much you can push it in each scenario and get comfortable enough so it doesn't get in your way in order to deliver the results you want.
And there's a huge push by the media and each company to sell you something new when you probably don't need it. It's better to exploit the stuff you have as much as possible and if you feel like it's actually holding you back, then upgrade. I upgraded from a T2i to a EOS R, and I think it makes a lot of sense in that situation, but if you have a 5D MK IV? it's not a huge deal.

Photography doesn't really demand you to switch the camera body. For me, Full-Frame sensors, ability to shoot RAW, 20+ MP (for big prints, if not, it doesn't matter much), is all there is to it. You invest more in lenses, that determines the sharpness of the photo. Maybe low-light performance and fps counts for some situation.
On the other hand, Videography demands more (far more demanding) to constantly upgrade the camera body.

I switched from a 6D mark II to a R6 Mark II this year, it's a big upgrade in terms of performances, mostly in the focusing system that is stellar compared to the 6D series, BUT if i wasnt in need of better focusing for my wildlife use, the 6DII would still give me great pictures for sure!
Also I dont think there is any reason to rush, the RF mount is still not open to third party and the RF lenses are still very expensive, so nothing to lose by waiting. (And I personally keep all my old camera body to never have to break-up with them ahah!)
The RF mount is now slowly being open to 3rd parties. Still gate kept by Canon, but at least there's that.
I use a rangefinder from the 1960s paired with a lens from the 1950s. My backup camera is even older. But perhaps that's the benefit of not being a professional, I get to use cameras that don't even bother with batteries. And of course, Ansel Adams made some of what are still the most gorgeous prints using gear that would now be 80- to 90-years-old.

I’m still have my DSLR camera I used to get discouraged when everyone started to upgrade but then again like you said don’t join the hype just because everyone else is. I’m took some time off on shooting and I feel like it’s time to get back into and start doing more as a hobby when I’m bored to keep me distracted but I love everything you expressed in this video
