    Good question. I will try to put a video up as soon as I can for you. Thanks!

    Thanks! Yes I have seen him do this also. I'm thinking it is the same type of thing you saw Ike Davis doing in the video. A way for him to make sure he can get into a good fielding position on time. Possibly use it with a land handed hitter that really pulls the ball hard maybe.

    When you say half way between the corners do you mean on the side of the base closest to 2nd? Just want to make sure I understand what side of the base you mean.

    I think you want to be just off the corner closest to the pitcher, how most of the guys do it in the video. If you put your foot where you are putting it and the runner doesn't dive back but instead goes back standing up he will be able to stick his shoulder into you and block you from receiving a poorly thrown ball. That's what I would try to do to you as a runner if you were standing where you are talking about. Hope this helps!

    I haven't watched enough of either one of them to really say. I know Encarnacion was a 3B for the beginning of his career, but he wasn't a great defensive third baseman so they moved him to DH and 1st base.

    Thanks matt. Great analysis- I've also seen Albert Pujols stand open with his left foot on the bag as a right handed first baseman. Its the only time I've ever seen it. Just wanted to know what you think.

    The reason is because if you are straddling the bag the runner can come back standing up and get in your way. If I was base running I would come back really hard standing up and put my chest right into your chest and if the throw was anywhere inside the bag you wouldn't be able to get it and the ball would go down the right field line and I'd end up on third.

    Hey Matt, there could be a ton of different reasons why you are doing so. I could tell you something easy like, stay inside the ball, let the ball travel, think about driving the ball the other way, but if your body is doing something prohibiting you from doing that it won't really matter what you are thinking at the plate. If you want me to look at your swing and analyze it check out our online lessons at our website touchemallball . com Good luck!

    Great breakdown seeing encarnacion playing first made me wonder if either him or Adam Lind are somewhat good defensive first baseman? Interested to hear what you have to say thanks

    your foot doesn't have to be on the base. It makes more sense to already have the glove in the base line, instead of catching the ball and then moving it into the base line. Or am I missing something?

    When I hold runners on I tend to set my right foot about half way between the corners of the base. Do you think that is a good spot to be in. I have found a lot of times the runner dive back with their hand inside my legs. I just wanted to know what you thought of it.

    does the foot need to be on the bag for the out to be called? also i've heard some people say to crouch down and give a low target to tag the runner quicker, but others want me to be a little more higher up almost like im standing, which is better?

    • @AntonelliBaseball
      @AntonelliBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +william pledger No foot doesn't need to be on. And I recommend an athletic position. Knees slightly bent just like in the video

    any reason why right handed first basemen dont straddle the bag? i like having my glove right over the bag so i can drop the tag (less distance between glove and base) while at the same time i can still move left and right to get bad balls. it seems to me that by having my right leg on the bag and left leg toward the pitcher like encarnacion, it's a longer distance to move your glove rather than relying on the velocity of the ball, plus opens up the slide to the outfield side of the base

      Daniel so they can get off the bag quicker and more effective

    I was wondering if you can be over the base with your feet on the corners of the bag?

    • @AntonelliBaseball
      @AntonelliBaseball  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you straddle the bag the runner will get in your way when he returns to the bag.

    • @GoldCountryProperties
      @GoldCountryProperties 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tommy Lynch yes do that

    • @jacobyson7629
      @jacobyson7629 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can that is what I do. Just make sure that your glove is in the same area as the normal position. Make sure the runner doesn't run into you. It may make the runner be more cautious which makes him slower to the bag, but that's rare

    got it

  • @masonmorris7278
    @masonmorris7278 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    why would you not straddle the base and let the ball travel to you and then just drop the tag on the runner

  • @GoldCountryProperties

    ok

  • @philvu2622

    why not straddle the base? thanks

    • @Jared-ez2xq
      @Jared-ez2xq 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will put you in a more vulnerable position and it will also take more time to pull the tag down. When you have one foot on the base and one foot on the line it is easier to take you glove and drag it right down to the front of the bag.
