If the second baseman third baseman can't make a good throw 9 out of 10 times and it shouldn't be playing that position f*** that don't expect a bad throw expect a good throw and then let your athletic ability catch the bad one if you cant catch the bad one and you shouldn't be playing that position either f*** expect a bad throw I don't believe in that I played professional baseball I coach high-level travel ball teams and I teach that you better make a good throw you're not going to play with for me you better catch the bad one or you're not going to play for me do your job and make a good throw

For one it doesn't matter how professional a player you are, fact is everyone makes mistakes and screws up throws at some point for one reason or another. And B. If you haven't thought about what you're gonna do or how you're gonna play a less than perfect throw, you're not a prepared first baseman. So your mindset or required play is a disadvantage for you to begin with, so you certainly wouldn't be my first choice to do work at first base. And I've played first base since I was a kid and all the way to adulthood, and have caught shity throws from some of the cockiest high-strung hollier than thou infielders that thought they had the strongest arms or quickest hands and feet on the field. Yet they all never waver when I pick a bullshit duck outta the dirt from them getting to excited or in too big a rush to make a perfect throw. But since I always expect them to do that, I never panic or get over excited. Because I can't bail their cocky ass out if I'm not prepared to do it in the first place. And the most aggravating ones are the ones from second or even the mound, I count on digging or picking for the other guys. But those close ones always kinda piss me off.

I was almost exclusively a 1st baseman in rec and travel, despite being one of the shortest guys on the team. Besides being a lefty, the biggest reasons were positioning and ability to scoop. Infielders were told to throw low and hard. The 3rd baseman was always the kid with the freakishly strong arm who threw wild as hell. Take a few of those throws off the chest in practice and suddenly all the other lefties are outfielders.
I feel like 1b never gets as much credit as they deserve. Shortstop makes a great play and a shit throw, and 1b picks it/ stretches to get the guy. Short gets the credit
Regarding recent interference call at 1B - are they teaching first basemen to cover the base with left foot now? I've noticed this on several occasions when throw is coming from 3B/C/P near the plate. The whole situation could have been avoided with a proper stretch to the ball, with right foot on base, to catch the ball prior to it getting "in" on runner. Especially considering the angle of the throw.
Yea I pitched and played firstbase from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played travel baseball for coaches that played pro or college. But my highschool coach taught me to have both feet in front of the firstbase bag and I started doing that and using my body as a target to wherever that ball is being thrown at except for catcher. Then again I would use my body as a target and if the ball was thrown to me I was taught to stretch toward the throw like Casey is showing you here. But as for pick offs I watched how Sid Bream played firstbase and holding runners on he but he was a lefty just like I am but he be facing the pitcher then when the throw came from the pitcher he would slap that glove down on the runner if they have the runner picked off. So I started playing the way he played firstbase but yea there is a lot that goes on at firstbase but Casey is right you can never expect a good throw. I always compared myself as a goalie and that is to not allow anything to get by you if you can help it
I also looked down on it when i played SS in my youth, now as an adult i had to play 1B and realized it is a busy position which takes quite a lot of skill.
Ji-Man Choi is the best defensive 1st baseman in baseball. do some homework on him before you get at me. if you disagree i'd love to see who your pick is.
I bet Profar, when he stood up from his split said this: “Did they catch that on instant replay? Because I will *NOT* be doing that again.” And quite frankly, as a fellow man, I don’t blame him. There are certain things that men should not be able to do, and the splits is one of them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s impressive, but as for me, I’d prefer to keep my balls in good condition.
This guy does not know how to hold a runner on first. Todd Zeile when he played for the Mets had the best method I ever saw for holding runners because he could keep them close, pick them off, and field more area. He positioned himself in the runner's blind spot behind the runner. To see where Zeile was positioned the runner had to turn away from the pitcher, a dangerous thing because he was taking his eyes off of the play. Runners would get reckless on him because he let them have a huge lead. And when the runner turned back to look at the pitcher Zeile could beat him back to the bag. As brilliant as this tactic is, I never saw another first baseman use it. Of course Zeile was primarily a third baseman so he probably had more range than most first sackers.
