ATTENTION: When wiping with alcohol, always test a small area first. Stop rubbing the area when you see the gummy film disappear. If the alcohol strips off too much paint, then the only other way is to use a no-scratch pot scrubber with WD-40, and it's a lot of work. Thanks guys!
I was wondering tho what about the WD-40 smell, it sure has a pretty strong smell and lasts for quite a while as well
Thanks for the video. I tried Isopropanol and WD-40 both on an older Visio remote. I ended up with a sticky mess worse than what I started with. I tried some Glue-away (by Homeline) I had on hand using the same "spray on cloth and wipe" technique. Wow!! A little elbow grease and all the rubber came off and I was left with a shiny black plastic back on my remote. I let it dry, wiped it off, and there was no odor. For a stubborn rubber coating you may give this goo gone clone a try. Good luck! :-)

I can't believe I never thought of using alcohol and WD-40! I've had so many things get gummy after years of use and I've tried so many cleaners. I usually can get it off but not without rubbing my fingers down to bone or slightly damaging the plastic. This video is gold! Over the years you've helped me out a lot with tid bits like this. The only 2 things I use, are the 70% alcohol and WD-40. WD-40 along with a no-scratch scubber can strip it away, but it's a lot of work. Glad you liked the video. Please remember to rate thumbs up and share the video link with others. Thanks

I'm literally cleaning my pair as I watch this video. The headset works great, but I'm not in my life buying another set, between the gummy plastic and the flaking fake leather furniture after only 3 years of ownership I'm just about ready to buy a pair from another brand.

As a dj, I like cleaning my devices and I have seen that tackiness on controller knobs, volume faders, cdj platter rings, macbook power cables, headphones, etc. I used soapy water thinking it was finger oils but scrubbing would take time. I started using alcohol and soft cloth to wipe them and get rid of the tackiness like in your video. I haven't thought about using WD-40 but I will consider it for the next time. Thank you for sharing this video!
PLEASE GUYS ALWAYS REMBER TO AVOID PRINTED WORDS BECAUSE YOU MAY ERASE THEM FROM REMOTES OR DJ CONTROLLERS. for controllers use soap and water on a damp cloth slowly.
This solution worked great! The only insight I would add is that it takes a lot more rubbing and scrubbing than I expected. But it definitely works!

Hey do you know what type of black paint was generally used on metal casings of stereo/media equipment around the 90s? Like a panasonic vcr or similar
Thanks for this. I had some In Ear Monitor receivers that had this exact issue. I used first aid alcohol prep pads and they cleaned up the sticky residue in a cinch!
for the ear pads:
I made fabric covers for mine to prevent sweat that builds up behind my ears too but that does cause them to slide off if you tilt your head down or back but other than that they are good and can be thrown in t he wash every now and then.
I used the tops of old socks that had cool patterns but the toes were ripped, I use the tops because there's a tight grip to hold over the ear pads. :)

Perfectly cleaned my little red flash drive that was driving me crazy. Thank you!! I had tried using alcohol to clean other sticky things, but when the color started coming off I got scared. Now I know it doesn't strip everything and am going to, as they say, Clean All the Things.
It's possible the color will be affected, so rub only enough to remove the gummy residue.

He didn't use them two years (because use them only for vacation trips - big fishing trips) well and only today found this problem. My poor husband was like a baby - "It is my favorite sunglasses!!!! I had a Western Digital Media Player remote with the whole back half thick sticky rubber. I had previously tried WD40 (nothing), then 90% isopropyl alcohol and a cloth (almost nothing), then I tried the fine steel wool 1-2" ball/chunk dunking it in 90% alcohol and carefully rubbed it firmly for a few minutes followed by a cloth dunked in the 90% alcohol then alternated these. after about 10 minutes it worked. I made sure to be very careful not to get to near the IR sending area in the front end. Scratching it would not be good and I don't want to have to buy an after market remote. So Kudos to the person that suggested the steel wool ball.

Hi thanks for the info on how to remove that gummy coating. Worked great on my Belkin USB multiplug hub. It was a mess to start with and I tried using just WD40 but it would not cut it. The IPA worked great with the WD follow up just like you said it would.

Just did this on my HyperX Cloud Alpha headset and it seems to work really well. Zero stickyness left after using the alcohol and WD40. I just wish I could have properly disassembled the headset so I could get into the annoying bits around the hinges, but I digress. Thank you for this tip!

Great video. I have and x-rite i1 Display for monitor calibration and it has the same coating. I used "Original KRUD KUTTER" and paper towels and it can right off. 5-minute job.

Very helpful advice but I had to fast forward to 2 minutes before you started to tell me how to get rid of the gummy mess. Keep that in mind, please. We don't need to be told what the sticky gummy mess is because we have already gone to your video for that exact thing. But finally, I can take your advice & use that alcohol & WD40. The edges of my PC case have this crap, thanks for the tip. Zeiss lens wipes from Amazon also work in getting off the sticky layer.

I used hand sanitizer for the alcohol content. Worked great!
The best stuff I have ever used to get rid of the sticky mess, especially on late 90s early 2000s electronics is dollar tree goo gone. That stuff works incredibly well. Just a couple of weeks ago I bought a lantern at a thrift store that had a rubberized coating that had turned to just a giant sticky mess and 10 minutes with the goo gone and it is perfectly clean and not a drop of the sticky stuff. It doesn't smell bad either.
I've used it, but like the alcohol, it can damage the paint. Thanks for watching!

Looks to work alot better than the talcum powder method I've tried a few times over the years!
With talc, you go from the gummy feel to the powdery feel. :-) As long as you don't rub too long with the isopropyl alcohol, you shouldn't remove too much paint. Thanks for watching!
Don't use talc products and if needed, without breathing protection. Contains asbestos.
I recently used 70% isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove the gummy surface of an Ooma Telo (internet-based home phone system) with excellent results. As with anything, you need to be careful while scrubbing across surfaces between two open areas (holes for push buttons in my case) as I scraped with my thumb nail and took off the outer layer of colored plastic or paint or whatever right in between two push buttons, but that was my doing not the alcohol--the rest of the surface is shiny black again and not sticky at all.
Funny, I just did that on a Telo last night. I used Goo Gone, then alcohol. No matter what you use, it takes a while and you will need about 20min to do the job right on a larger component like the Ooma. Love my Oooma Premier Linx Uniden 2 line 12 headset home phone system.

will this work on keyboards wrist rest? i have corsair k70 lux .. and its rest is mild sticky. i tried washing with handwash but it doesnt help and worsens things instead

Test with qtip. If you rub too much, the black color may come off.

I used cleaning wipes a bit of joy dishwashing soap, wash it with clean wipes (water), then followed your advice on etyl alcohol (it worked a bit), finished it up with a lens cleaner (eye care)
I was cleaning up the hair dryer that has not been used for a while and the handle was very sticky so i had to use soap i just didn't wet it that much just enough

Sir, I noticed that there was writing, in white text, on that piece, before you wiped it with the alcohol, so whatever you removed appears to have been some sort of Factory coating that didn't wear well, perhaps, that had the writing on top of it. Do you know of anything less harsh, but as effective as the alcohol, that you've tested?

If you want to remove the gummy surface, you can't be too concerned about the removing any writing. The writing was on the plastic, below that miserable coating. WD-40 on a "no scratch" sponge is the only alternative. Thanks for watching

I used nail polish. Sadly scraped away some of the color but thats totally fine. My tip would be to not use too much to avoid that.
This helps alot I have a Portable Bluetooth Argom Tech Speaker an the plastic grey around the edges are ridiculousness sticky an Clammy an dust an hair sticks to it like glue . I use a cloth an some Winter Green 50% Rubbing Alcohol to get off the initial Gummy Grime then some Surgical 97% Ethyl Alcohol afterwards & finished off with some WD 40 . Looks like new now . Really hate how it gets so sticky feels like I don't know if you guys have this problem in America but if you have coubords in your kitchen up on the wall an or stuff on top your Fridge it gets really Sticky from all the cooking an frying done on the Stove an all the lil particles in the Kitchen Atmosphere lol . That's how Sticky my Speaker felt .....

I've tried rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid , fantastic, dishwashing soap and SOS pads, and for me here in toronto, no dam way ! After using all the previous products, I'm still pissed over their lack of performance. I'm going to try one more time using my 90% alcohol. Please pray for me ! 😊😊😊😊
Krud Kutter...put it on a cloth, rub into the affected piece, repeat as necessary, works like a charm.
I have an old Vado pocket camcorder that has (now) a gummy coating on it. I'VE tried alcohol and WD-40 and nothing removes it. I finally resorted to trying to scrape it off and it became an ugly mess. Nothing takes this goo off. I don't understand why they coat electronics with this coating. Good video, thanks for sharing.

I have some Cloud Alpha headsets that have this problem. Tried cleaning them with alcohol but I find that results are mixed at best. The only thing I hate about this particular headset, as the rubberized coating is on most parts of the ear pieces and headband. Easier not to get products with these type of coatings, but unfortunately it seems to be popular among many "gaming" peripherals. However, if you must or have no choice, keeping the devices clean is the next best thing. Wipe them off often before and after use. Don't wait until it becomes "gummy" to try to clean it.
I have found in my experience that AC coil cleaner does the best job. I've used the kind you buy in concentrate, and then dilute it. Spray onto your plastic item (after you have removed or isolated it from other items). Allow to sit for a few minutes. Spray again and scrub with a plastic brush or mildly abrasive item that won't damage the finish. wash or wipe with water and viola. Done. The finish, in my experience, is such that you won't know the rubber coating was ever there.
Instead of using WD40 in the last step, try using ArmorAll Cleaner (Auto dash and upholstry cleaner in Auto section of any store). It will not only be a better sheen, you will avoid the "smell" that is left for days with WD40. ArmorAll provides additional protection layer for future use.

How long did it last before it returns?
I had the same problem with a pair of beats heaphones. I got rid of it with one part water, one part baking soda (it turns into a paste) and using my fingers. Much better than alcohol.
Too harsh. You made an abrasive mixture. People brush their teeth with baking soda.
I have an Ooma device which had a thick sticky coating over its face after I owned it for a few years and looked revolting, I assume its some kind of oxidation/reaction. I think my very successful method is probably safer on thicker plastics, try at you own risk and don't forget you got the secret from me. It is far quicker than the above method and just involves mosquito repellent, I used deep woods off. Spray on a couple of times and wipe off with a clean cloth. God knows if this stuff can beat many other solvents what it does to our skin.

In my area, even though we are on a county wide lock-down, the Dollar Tree is still open. They sell stuff called "goo gone" It works for this perfectly (sadly, the alcohol they sell is only 50%). It's a decent sized bottle for a buck too. I just did a fairly good sized lantern and I don't think it took even a 1/2 an ounce. It has an orange smell to it and not foul, which is nice. I had a 90s era MP3 player with the same problem and I did that one a long time ago and it has held up nicely and not come back.
I didn't even know rubbing alcohol would work because when I first tried it years ago, it was with 50% and it really didn't help. Next time I'll try the alcohol.

I used a sticker remover liquid and it works! but lots and lots of rubbing, the stickiness is hella persistent.

I hate to bring this up but if you clean off the rubber coating are you then exposing yourself to possible toxic PVC plastic underneath?

I had this gunge on a camera, after cleaning I coated the rubber parts with the car alloy wheel spray sealer by squirting it in the lid & then quickly painting over the Rubber as it dries quickly, up to now it hasnt returned.l
are there any alternatives to isopropyl alcohol? coz pure isopropyl alcohol is quite expensive even for a 500ml. is WD-40 mandatory? what happens if you dont apply WD-40 after removing sticky rubber surface? will the stickyness come back?
It's cheap 70% or 91% isopropyl alcohol, if you can find it with Covid.
@@electronicsNmore went to the pharmacy and it said abt RM30 in my country, abt USD7.41 for 500ml, even hardware stores in my country say they dont sell coz it evaporates easily, so as for now im just gonna try Dettol hand sanitizer
