This is how my driving instructor taught me 18 years ago and I've been an expert parallel parker. I can do it in one shot, to the right, to the left even on a one-way street. I parallel parked my in-laws huge farm truck twice one day in downtown Denver. I crack it up to a good teacher and good spatial awareness. The trick is always to line up with the car ahead, curl toward the curb, straighten the wheel half way at 45 degrees and aim for the curb before turning the wheel left (if parking on the right) and finishing. Perfection every time.
Awesome - sounds like you were taught right and that you have good natural skills! Parallel parking is a useful thing to know how to do, and sounds like you’ve never met a parking space you can’t handle!
This videos a couple years old but It really helped me understand what to do. My driving instructor is just too impatient and doesn't like to explain things thoroughly so I kept making mistakes but now I understand a lot better. My test is on Friday. Fingers crossed!
As a person who has been driving for over 50 years, I love your videos. They are perfect for teaching my son how to drive. That being said, this is the only video I did not use. As a resident of NYC for many years, I've parallel parked thousands of times, often in tight spaces. A two-step parallel park without the middle step (straight back in) is preferable in my opinion.
Sir, I've been driving for over 30 years, and you just taught me more than I have ever known about parallel parking!! I can finally be confident to do this!! TY!!
Wow, this is by far the easiest instruction I find in how to parallel park.. Thank you so much for your videos Stan!! I’m binge watching them all and I’m trying not to skip the adds if that helps and of course the like buttons too🙂
I watched your video again and again, I have my driving license test next week, I am so scared. I am a senior citizen and I have my license from my native country, but I need to get it here in the US. Your explanations have given me courage to do it!! Thanks a lot.
Thank you! This is the best, easiest, clearest video I’ve seen on parallel parking (and I’ve watched a lot lately!). I’ve been driving for 51 yrs, never had a problem parallel parking, even in some pretty tight spaces…until a month ago. I just can’t do it! Had to rent a garage at my apartment complex (that’s a whole other issue). I’m going to try your method. Also, thank you for mentioning clockwise and counterclockwise. Do you have a tip on how to know when your wheels are straight in the second section? I tend to forget how far I turned my steering wheel during the first section. Your voice is nice and calm as well.
Hi Stan! I've been watching some of your vlogs about safety driving. I am starting to learn how to drive , my husband is teaching me the basics. I just passed my written exam here in Canada a few months ago. Your explanation are very clear , easy to follow and right on point. Thanks for sharing them. I've learned a lot! Hope to pass my actual driving exam soon! Happy New Year to you and your family!
It's a great sign that you've been watching videos about safe driving, because that means you care about being the best driver you can be. I'm honored that you've watched some of my videos, and I hope they've helped. I have every confidence that you'll do great on your driving exam. Just keep studying, practicing, and watching driving videos (even it they're not mine - haha).Take care, and Happy New Year to you and your family as well!
I have paralleled parked into spots that just about fit my car, like a few inches away from the front and back cars, and I have had people stand and watch and applaud... now that's woman power.
@@HowSkills Hi. The tips that are given here are excellent tips. At that time my car was a FORD Laser, not all that big.Lining up your car with the front car and keeping the required distance is very important, this video just about nailed it, and be brave. It took a lot of locking "inching" and turning for sure, because the space was always so exact!. I used to do that often in the days where I used to worked, fortunately it was a one way street and not very busy. I think this is what scares people, too much traffic around..lol
Farry Ali I think you’re right about the traffic scaring people. The idea of other vehicles waiting behind them while they parallel park, pulling out and going around them, or even just knowing people are watching them try to do this can be intimidating. It does take a little bravery to try it sometimes when there is a lot of traffic around you.
Yeah, give it a try! You may have to adjust things a little depending on the size and turning radius of your car. Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch!
Beautifully explained, I really understood that although I am terrified of doing it but I am going to try with boxes see how I get on, will let you know how I do ha ha I am learning so much from you. You have a lovely calming voice. Thanks
You’re not alone in struggling with this, so don’t feel bad. Thanks so much, I really needed to see what the wheels do when you turn the steering wheel, I know it seems obvious, but I really needed a visual, thanks!!
Ive been watching a lot of tutorial parallel parking but i find this one very easy to understand n showing exactly what to do. Thank you for sharing👍 I will surely try this method😊
I've been watching tutorials on parallel parking for a few days, but I really like yours the best, bcus you you did a wonderful job explaining. Taking my test today, hope I get my license 🙏😩
I watch your video you make it so easy. To me it's so difficult don't want to hit the other vehicles. But funny you say that you see a perfect parking but don't wanna parallel park. Lol😅 This was a great video especially with the other camera showing outside.👍👍
Just like the way you filmed your video. The way you filmed inside and outside the vehicle. Some videos don't do that your video was the best I saw so far. Thank You for sharing.
You don't use your side mirrors to do that? I love the way you tech that. It's mutch better than this story of center of gravity and the middle bar that need to be align with a light and a mirror... Happily haven't been asked do make a parallel parking when I did my exam.
It doesn’t seem like very many instructors require drivers to parallel park during their exam anymore. Maybe that’s the trend, but glad you didn’t have to do it to pass your test! It’s something that’s good to practice so you know how to do it when necessary. I mean, I couldn’t get a good parking spot at my favorite pizza place in town if I couldn’t parallel park! Lol! Thank you very much for watching!
Personally I prefer real parking or empty street and walking to my destination. It's not a problem for me to walk. The problem is more to remember where I put the car.
Practice is what it takes. Even try it at first parallel parking behind one car instead of between two cars. Get used to knowing when to turn the wheel to get behind one car and then practice between two cars. Or set up some cardboard boxes to represent the second car for practice. I’m sure you will do good!
I'm 69 years old and have been driving since I was 16. I have never, NEVER seen that much space between cars for parallel parking. 0:45 If people followed these instructions verbatim, they would back into the vehicle behind them 4:34 because they were not told to shift into Drive (for automatic transmissions or 1st gear if driving with a manual transmission). Otherwise, good video.
Yes, it was a bigger spot than you’d normally find, looking even bigger because of the camera lens I was using! I had tried several other spots that day to film this with normal size spacing, but those didn’t work out because of traffic and other problems. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
I know what you mean. I only do it when there’s no other place to park. A lot of states don’t require you to parallel park for your driving test anymore, and I think that’s a good idea.
+Ivani's Girlfriend I’m glad it helped you. I’m sure you will do good on your test since you are searching TH-cam for driving tips. Yes, it’s something that most of us don’t have to do very often, so we don’t have a lot of practice doing it. It’s a lot of pressure to do it on a driving test. I’m glad it’s over for you - you can relax now!
1:48 - Your tutorial recommends lining up one's rear axle with the other car's rear axle before cutting the wheel to the right. But other parallel parking tutorials recommend backing up a bit and lining up one's rear passenger side window with the adjacent car's taillights, THEN cutting the wheel rightward. I'm not sure which advice to follow. Which is more efficient and/or reproducible?
When you hit the 45 degree mark, you said as a reference you should see the left front of the car behind you is in the right corner in your back window. I have found that when you actually see that same end in your rear view mirror can also be used as reference , yes?
Here's how I was taught: First every vehicle you will drive is different, nothing short of experimenting will solve this. Line up rear bumper to rear bumper, back up till you hit the "sweet spot" (the sweet spot SEEMS to be the middle of the vehicle lineing up with the rear bumper of the parked vehicle) STOP turn steering wheel to the right (if American parallel parking) at max, back up car till car sits at 45 degree (Meaning if you went out and saw the angle of the side of the parked car and yours it would be 45 degrees) angle STOP then wheel opposite direction completely till it stops, back up until front bumper lines up with car in front of you. A car as long as a volvo wagon lines up near rear window while a car like a modern subaru lines up between the front the rear side windows. It's flawless and not need to drive forward after. The hard part is just finding the "sweet spot" first. kids can parallel park with this method flawlessly.
Hi stan. Thank you for this great video. I am wondering if the available parking space is much less than what is shown in the video, would the same check points applied when aligning the car at starting, reversing and all the other moves involved as shown? Thx stan.
Admittedly, this was a bigger space shown in the video than you normally encounter. I used it simply because it was readily available on the day I was shooting. But, I parallel park quite often, and these reference points have always worked well for me. If space is smaller, the front left corner of the vehicle behind you still serves as a good reference point - you will end up turning at a slightly different angle into the space which will still have you in good position for the rest of your maneuver.
Thanks, Stan. That's the best video about parallel parking I've ever seen. I'm still confused about backing my car into the slot until it's at 45-degree angle. You used the "left front of the car behind my car" as a reference point, what do I do when there's only one car for me to practice parallel parking behind it? Could you help, please. Thanks
Sorry to brag but I love parallel parking! Tight Chicago streets with limited parking made this possible. Thank you great city of Chicago, will be forever grateful :) should I mention my first car was leaking steering fluid....ahh sweet memories!
I’m glad to hear it! I consider parallel parking a challenge, and do it on purpose even when regular spaces are available, just to keep in practice. I’ve driven in downtown Chicago several times, and knowing how to parallel park comes in handy. Finding an open spot in the first place is the hardest part!
i love parallel parking. What I hate are inconsiderate drivers that couldn't care when opening their doors and causing all the dents on my car doors. This is why I parallel park as much as possible.
I agree on both counts: love parallel parking and don’t understand inconsiderate drivers who aren’t careful about opening their doors and dinging mine. And of course they don’t leave a note apologizing for it or offering to pay to fix it. Takes all kinds I guess.
I backed up straight at the 45 degree angle until I first saw the license plate of the car in front of me in the right corner of my front window. This positioning might vary slightly with different size vehicles, but on my car, I could see that when the center of their rear bumper (their license plate) was in the corner of my front window, I was well past the point where I would hit them if I started turning. Your goal at this point is to back up straight just until you know that your front bumper won't hit the rear bumper of the car in front of you when you make that next turn of the wheel all the way counterclockwise to the left. You can practice using some empty cardboard boxes to simulate the other vehicle to get used to knowing where the front of your vehicle is in relation to the vehicle in front of you. If possible, have someone act as a "spotter" and signal you when it's safe to stop backing straight and start turning. Experiment to find that safe spot on your vehicle that lines up with their license plate (your passenger side mirror; door pillar hides it; corner of front window; etc.), and use that as a future reference for when it's safe to turn your steering wheel to the left. Hope this helps - thank you for watching!
I have only seen video and pictures of the traffic and parking there, but I definitely believe that it would be a real challenge. The space needed to parallel park any given vehicle depends on its length, turning radius, and skill of the driver and in Cairo, you would need a lot of skill!
Almost correct except for the part you turn the steering wheel without the car slightly moving. This is called dry steering which can be disastrous to the steering assembly. I've know people loosing steering control because if damaged steering assembly caused by repeated dry steering.
You would have to estimate the angle as best you can then. After you've stopped beside the vehicle that you'll be parking behind, look and see what object, sign, car, or landmark is located in the blind spot area behind your driver's side A-Pillar, the front roof supports at the sides of the windshield. Then, turn the wheel and start backing, and when that object or landmark is directly in front of you as you look out the windshield, you will approximately be at a 45 degree angle. But since there is no vehicle behind you, the backing procedure will be easier overall and having the exact angle won't be as important. If you're at 30 degrees even, you'll be able to back in safely.
What you didn't say is that you start off about 12" from the forward parked car. If you line up yourself as driver with the space for the driver in the forward car, your back bumpers should be aligned (if similarly sized vehicles). I am an expert parallel parker. I always offer to park for the driver if he/she isn't confident with parallel parking. I learned in Drivers' Ed about 40 years ago!
@ 1:47 that is not 3-5 feet apart from the other car. That is like a foot and a half ( 18 inches ) very confusing when wording contradicts what is demonstrated.

Thanks mate, is there a trick that works 100 %, that I dont hit the car in front of me?
You make this seem so easy 😭😭😭😭
Is it best to do reverse driving for parallel parking ?
mel b Yes, it is best to do reverse parking when parallel parking. Thank you for watching.
Thank you Sir Ill try what I learn from here 😊
That is great. Thanks
Thanks for watching, Dania!
This is beautiful
Thank you for watching!
New driver here , this shit hit home, parallel parking is a headache! I'll try this and see
It can be a real pain, and the only way to get better at it is to practice. Thanks for watching!
Thanks
K Ng at that point i would suggest try to estimate being at 45 degree angle to the curb
Thank you sir .
+Chakib Mostefai You're very welcome, and I thank you for watching!
Stan Cravens i used your methode today and it works awesome thank you so much sir for helping us new drivers :)
+Chakib Mostefai I'm very glad to hear that! Thank you for trying it and letting me know how it went.
Thank alot am anew learner
Thank you
And thank you for watching - I hope it helped!
@@HowSkills I will always keep with me
i love parallel parking.
Thanks.
My instructors said to turn one turn when the car front reach at the back door. You said do two full turn. Which is accurate?
Thanks
And I thank you for taking the time to watch this!
Thankyou sir
You’re very welcome! I appreciate your watching the video.
THANKYOU FROM INDIA
Good
How far did you go back when you were straight? How did you know it was far enough?
God bless you I like the way you express it's clear .
What if the parking spot s tight? U can't imagine how difficult its in Cairo Egypt
I have only seen video and pictures of the traffic and parking there, but I definitely believe that it would be a real challenge. The space needed to parallel park any given vehicle depends on its length, turning radius, and skill of the driver and in Cairo, you would need a lot of skill!
Did u do some of the video at the old YMCA?
Yes, I did! You recognized it!!
Stan Cravens u hv a lot of subs no you've grown a lot
Yeah, this channel has been growing lately! Hope it continues that way!
Hope you had a good day today!
Almost correct except for the part you turn the steering wheel without the car slightly moving. This is called dry steering which can be disastrous to the steering assembly. I've know people loosing steering control because if damaged steering assembly caused by repeated dry steering.
Very true! I've mentioned dry steering in another video, but failed to avoid it in this one.
@Stan Cravens Thanks for acknowledging that. I appreciate humble people. Safe driving Stan.
What if there is no car behind? How to judge the 45 degree then?
Here in Thailand they do in different way.. not between the car they make they make own Bloc .psrallel parking .
That is very interesting! I am going to look into that and learn how you do it. Thank you for watching and enjoy your day.
I learned how to parallel park in Driver's Ed years ago, too! Not sure if that's taught everywhere nowadays.
@ 1:47 that is not 3-5 feet apart from the other car. That is like a foot and a half ( 18 inches ) very confusing when wording contradicts what is demonstrated.
