Just to remind people the only reason the Satellarknights list in History last week ran the 1900 ATK beatstick Rigel was because it could pump itself to 2400 ATK to get over the Unicore and was searchable by Deneb and ROTA, even though it would blow itself up in the end phase. That's it. That was the only reason they used it.
I used to run doriado turbo and djinnlock still couldn't make that shit playable 🤣 I still love that deck tho because fu-rin-ka-za is the coolest card in the game
"i know you have valk" that brought me back to some of my first locals, nekroz really taught you to pay attention to what your opponent DIDNT do, as was often the best information.
like paying attention to what floo does and doesn't add. and responding accordingly. information is everything, and it's why I hate going against some deep rogue matchups at locals. I have no idea what they do.
I know we're past the point in time in History, but at the very least I hope we get to see Noble Knights in Jank. People like to make fun of it for never doing anything, but the truth is the deck got like 10+ regional tops in 2014, so the deck wasn't nothing (it didn't seem to do a whole lot at events bigger than that, but I think it's still worth showing).
Seconding this, if only because Noble Knights are my favorite archetype. There's something about "warrior-type monsters with sword equip spells" that makes me nostalgic. Yeah, I thought Joey equipping Flame Swordsman with Salamandra was the coolest shit ever, why do you ask?
Man, it's so cool how Nekroz mirror look like a Goat match: card advantage is so important. Joseph had an upper hand on this because yeah, he always opens Maxx C, but also because Cimo has never tried to bait it out before committing into the lock. Taking the challenge will most of the times make your opponent find the out.
Not that crazy, but when I played during teledad I knew a guy who missed his car payment for two months to buy a play set of DaD, nothing really came of it but I remember thinking YuGiOh can’t possibly be that important. Wish I still played in Nekroz format so I could’ve seen more degeneracy

Cimos inexperience with Nekroz really showed here. All the ritual spells have GY effects that can add another ritual spell which he could've done when the board was clear. He could've also searched any ritual spell to summon Trish with Shurit to clear the DD warrior lady as well.
Game 2 at 40:25 Valkyrus needs to negate an attack to stop the battle Phase. Nekroz of Gungnir can use its effect to pop the attacking monster and since no attack is negated, the battle phase continues. This was a nice trick back then to perform an OTK through a Valkyrus. Also Valkyrus' both effect are a hard once per turn.

Shaddoll ba tellars and especially nekroz are the first decks of the modern era where you get advantage while playing your deck. Activating your cards doesn't mean you pay up and waste your ressources with the endboard being a single search and 1-2 rank fours, but you get card advantage while advancing your board state at the same time, selecting appropiate protection for the matchup and setting up generic searches with brio and claus. At the same time you inhibit your opponent with your chainables in the mirror. What an insane deck!
Not quite there yet, but the post-Djinn Nekroz mirror was the most fun I've ever had playing Yugioh. An incredibly high skill ceiling where one misplay (sometimes even one sub-optimal play) is game over makes this my favorite deck of all time.
As someone who still plays Nekroz to this day, impcantations (like with every other ritual archetype) made this deck so much better albeit not a meta threat but a fun rogue options, in particular thanks to the impcantations and ash blossom you get a suprising number of Small World bridges that can get you to most of your Nekroz as well as Mega Zaborg with you can then normal using your impcantations since the deck doesnt need Manju or Senju anymore, adding in other cards that benefit being sent to the graveyard like Wind Pegasus @ignister, Fossil Knight, Ntss and the mentioned in the video herald of the archlight just to name a few, this deck can still do some stuff, though most of it is either hitting on an uncommon axis ala Zaborg, or breaking boards combined with a stun effect.
Yeah. I have a friend who plays a Nekroz build similar to yours, and I still tinker with mermail and shaddoll, so we have fun. ...Don't top any events ever, but we have fun.
I played a Drytron version for a little bit when I got back into the game and consistently ending on a Unicore and a Vanity's Ruler put in work at locals, especially when Areadbhair came out to add a negate on top of that. Then comes Diviner and you're adding even more consistency to it.
Watching this match, it hurt me watching how badly Cimo played this deck. There was so many ways he could set up plays to win the game and loop his resources. Yet he never did any of them. Miss playing this deck though. Probably my favorite deck to ever play, besides Dino Rabbit
I honestly believe that Nekroz would be as loved as Burning Abyss if the djinn lock didn't exist. For a while, I remember people in my circle who hated the deck because of djinn lock, and it's consistency didn't help. It's a deck, that compared to the others at the time, was just as good. It just had a really unfair strategy tied to it.
For the Patrick Hoban controversy- he wrote an article to it afterwards where he fully admitted to doing it, and argued it wasn't a bad thing to do. Since our memories never stay perfect as time goes on, and often warp a bit instead, it's significantly more likely that it happened rather than didn't. It came about due to witnesses, and likely wouldn't have become a contrversy in the first place if it was only ever theoretical. Most likely, either he's trying to salvage some reputation in his book, or his memories have warped over time. A firm belief in "I didn't do anything wrong there", which was the stance he had in his article arguing it was fine that he did it, combined with later believing that such a thing is underhanded, probably lead to a change in belief that he didn't do it rather than a change in belief that he did something wrong.
You know you're in a "skill testing" mirror when Vanity's Emptiness and 4 draws off a Book of Eclipse aren't enough to win the game instantly. I can only imagine how much longer(or in some cases shorter) this can get with optimal play.
Love this deck. I remember back in 2017 at YCS Pittsburgh, a couple “pros” that I won’t name got in a heated argument and challenged each other to a match in the hallway of the venue. They played a retro nekroz mirror and there was so much shit talk back and forth throughout the games. It was quite a spectacle

Cimo had game on game 2 after he drew prep. Use prep, add brio/cycle. Use brio to search shurit. Use cycle, tribute shurit, summon valk from grave. Shurit search trish. Use mirror to banish shurit, summon trish. Trish banish warrior lady. Switch claus to atk. Atk with 12+18+27+29 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
At 37:50, The chain needs to be Shurit 1 Trish 2. At the time, if 2+ optional (or 2+ mandatory) trigger effects could be activated by the same player in one chain, the order in which they'd be activated in would be decided by which one met its trigger first (so since tributing shurit happened before the successful summon of trish, Shurit's effect would have had to be activated first because its trigger was met first). Obviously didn't affect the duel, but a little fun fact nonetheless.
My favorite Mirrormatch ever. I can't explain why, but Nekroz and Geargia are my all time favorite decks. But the Nekroz mirror was by far the most fun and intense mirror I ever played in almost 10 years of competitive play. Of course after the djinn was banned, with it, it was just cancerous.
Does anyone believe that Hoban didn't do the whole "side out Djinn?" thing? I remember when that allegedly happened and there was no doubt in anyone's minds. At this point I'd be more likely to believe he's lying in his book to make himself look better than to believe he really didn't do it.
Finally my favorite deck and favorite format of all time, the Nekroz mirror match remains one of the most fun mirrors even if you dont side out the djin
I remember when I was still new to yugioh in highschool, this set came out and I got a few packs and pulled some of the bad nekroz cards and said, "yeah I want to build Nekroz." not knowing how expensive it was.
If you lived outside the US, decisive armor could pump up trish or valk to out Towers. If you lived in the US though, you could phase out DA and just run crab king in the extra deck
Nekroz, still one of my favorite decks to this day, mostly for the lore and aesthetics. May my boy Albaz follow the footsteps of Avance and get together with the girl at the end.
I've developed a fondness for Nekroz through Duel Links. Relatively bare though current decks are compared to what we see here, I've had a lot of fun with the deck since they released Trish and Manju there. Neat to see how much more support this archetype could still get there, so I have stuff to look forward to. The Djinn can die in a fire, though... I may like to try and assemble a Nekroz deck in Master Duel sometime, just for fun...
this deck got me my invite to 2016 nationals, i loved this deck so much, and the decisive armor was used for the otk by boosting unicore, then using cycle to reborn the armor and then use the manju or senju for the final hit
Shame that we didnt get a no djinn game. Nekroz mirrors were so skillful as you clean your field with valk to prevent trish and have kaleido in the grave active again while drawing into shared ride etc
Apparently the YCS that would happen the weekend of Nekroz release would see nearly 40K worth of product being bought, sold, opened, and traded just so that players of the event could get their hands on this deck.

Nekroz, what a great time to play. There where a ton of cool decks but nekroz was the dtb. It was a hot summer in my country. Me and my best friend got back into YGO. After some weeks of comp. Tournaments He had a horrible accident with his knee's and was in the hospital for some nights. We played after his operation until late Night and we really had a ton of fun! Again soon after i sold everything because i told him Nekroz will be banned, i feel it. It really happened a week after and we bouth stopped again playing for a while. Happy to have this really nice memory:)
So during Nekroz format I ran Dark Synchro focusing on Void Ogre Dragon, it worked pretty fine, until the damned Kozmo's changed our ability to verify legal plays. I could negate a Mirror when they didn't have a legal target, baiting my negation, I'm not sure if I ever actually suffered that specific thing, but it definitely could have been possible, so I always got mindgamed on if the were gonna summon Brionac.
Before tearlaments dropped it was still taking tournaments in 2021 as a rouge anti meta strat. Although it was playing a cyber angel+ inpcantation engine instead of pure nekroz. Some drytron used a nekroz package. Still not nearly t0. Decent rogue deck though
@@gardianx5293 I used a Drytron Nekroz version for a little bit shortly after getting back into the game (early 2021) and the ability to consistently end on a Unicore and Vanity's Ruler was able to put in some work at locals at least.
@@13thangelxx Yeah, I can see it working. Ruler is a nightmare to out lol. Anyhoo, yeah, when master duel first dropped I was playing pure nekroz and got to plat using it. Irl, I had a watered down nekroz deck but teched in 3x Zaphion the Timelord in which worked wonders. Still, locals was one of those that they had to struggle to kill the deck. If you managed to board clear but couldn't kill, I was going to reestablish a unicore/catastor (at min) lock board. (Catastor is a lot better now than it was at release ngl)
My first regional was during this format. I took Yosenju and did pretty decent for a tier 0 format. Yosenju with Floodgates had a good Nekroz matchup since you can play without your extra and out the Djinn/Unicore lock easily. Yosenju also could easily OTK if they were caught without Valkyrus in hand. I ended up bubbling because my losses were early rounds so my tiebreakers were pretty bad, but it's still my favorite regional memory.
I made a "masked hero six samurai" to play against this nekroz deck. If I went first, it was an instant win because my end board were almost always darklaw and naturia beast/shien
Nekroz was really expensive when it dropped cus of how consistent the deck was at making it bords and how broken the rituals were for it"s time and tell this day it is one of favorite decks wish it would get some sapport so I can dust off my nekroz play them again
I quit playing for 3 years or so roughly a year before necroz came out, so this is very new to me. Glad i missed out on this format even though nekroz is a cool deck

You say this is when Yugioh died, however, this was some good stuff. Kind of like GOATs, it's very interactive. The Djinn lock is kind of scummy, but still not horrible. This is one of my favourite formats now, for sure.
Not at anything more competitive than a fairly casual locals. Their strongest board would be like Unicore, Areadbhair, and Vanity's Ruler which is so easily broken by meta standards that it's not even funny. And that's assuming completely uninterrupted, when the deck can't really play through multiple hand traps. A properly timed Ash or Droll shuts the entire deck down. You could maybe run a Dogmatika version splashing White Zoa and run Mega-Zaborg to completely destroy an opponents ED and just rely on floodgates to carry you otherwise. That still runs into the same hand trap problem though.
Unicore is okay against Tear, they also have Sophia which locks the extra deck during the main phase on a quick effect. It plays well with Dogmatika, but even then the deck is just too slow to keep up in the current format. Keldo and Mudora shuffling back your graveyard is basically a death sentence. The deck couldn’t reliably break a board assembled by any deck from the past 2 years, and it certainly doesn’t stand a change going second against Tearlaments.

Gishki was also a good Ritual Deck, first in the FTK and then with Hieratics. It's just not remembered because it was hit immediatly.

Finally my favorite deck and favorite format of all time, the Nekroz mirror match remains one of the most fun mirrors even if you dont side out the djin
I remember when I was still new to yugioh in highschool, this set came out and I got a few packs and pulled some of the bad nekroz cards and said, "yeah I want to build Nekroz." not knowing how expensive it was.

If you lived outside the US, decisive armor could pump up trish or valk to out Towers. If you lived in the US though, you could phase out DA and just run crab king in the extra deck
you cant add Valkyrus with preparation of rites since that adds level 7 or lower...
Cimo is the man and I know he said don’t expect a good mirror match but damn, the misplays here are crushing

Nekroz, still one of my favorite decks to this day, mostly for the lore and aesthetics. May my boy Albaz follow the footsteps of Avance and get together with the girl at the end.
I've developed a fondness for Nekroz through Duel Links. Relatively bare though current decks are compared to what we see here, I've had a lot of fun with the deck since they released Trish and Manju there. Neat to see how much more support this archetype could still get there, so I have stuff to look forward to.
The Djinn can die in a fire, though...
I may like to try and assemble a Nekroz deck in Master Duel sometime, just for fun...

It's crazy Cimo had the lock all three games and lost all of them. Now I understand why Neckroz mirror is so interesting.
this deck got me my invite to 2016 nationals, i loved this deck so much, and the decisive armor was used for the otk by boosting unicore, then using cycle to reborn the armor and then use the manju or senju for the final hit
mbt being like "Vanities! since when?" stupid card was a fucking super rare in secret forces :(

Shame that we didnt get a no djinn game. Nekroz mirrors were so skillful as you clean your field with valk to prevent trish and have kaleido in the grave active again while drawing into shared ride etc

Apparently the YCS that would happen the weekend of Nekroz release would see nearly 40K worth of product being bought, sold, opened, and traded just so that players of the event could get their hands on this deck.
I wonder what would happen if you took all the strongest decks in history and put them against each other? Magical Scientist FTK vs Nekroz vs Dragon Ruler etc.

Nekroz, what a great time to play. There where a ton of cool decks but nekroz was the dtb. It was a hot summer in my country. Me and my best friend got back into YGO.
After some weeks of comp. Tournaments
He had a horrible accident with his knee's and was in the hospital for some nights.
We played after his operation until late Night and we really had a ton of fun! Again soon after i sold everything because i told him Nekroz will be banned, i feel it. It really happened a week after and we bouth stopped again playing for a while.

Nekroz, one of my all-time favorite archetypes just because of the Riutal imprint. But, damn was this deck too dominant.
So during Nekroz format I ran Dark Synchro focusing on Void Ogre Dragon, it worked pretty fine, until the damned Kozmo's changed our ability to verify legal plays. I could negate a Mirror when they didn't have a legal target, baiting my negation, I'm not sure if I ever actually suffered that specific thing, but it definitely could have been possible, so I always got mindgamed on if the were gonna summon Brionac.
Been waiting for this! Nekroz is such an interesting archetype. Really wish it could be competitive again.
Before tearlaments dropped it was still taking tournaments in 2021 as a rouge anti meta strat.
Although it was playing a cyber angel+ inpcantation engine instead of pure nekroz.
Some drytron used a nekroz package.

@@gardianx5293 I used a Drytron Nekroz version for a little bit shortly after getting back into the game (early 2021) and the ability to consistently end on a Unicore and Vanity's Ruler was able to put in some work at locals at least.

Anyhoo, yeah, when master duel first dropped I was playing pure nekroz and got to plat using it.
Irl, I had a watered down nekroz deck but teched in 3x Zaphion the Timelord in which worked wonders. Still, locals was one of those that they had to struggle to kill the deck. If you managed to board clear but couldn't kill, I was going to reestablish a unicore/catastor (at min) lock board. (Catastor is a lot better now than it was at release ngl)

My first regional was during this format. I took Yosenju and did pretty decent for a tier 0 format. Yosenju with Floodgates had a good Nekroz matchup since you can play without your extra and out the Djinn/Unicore lock easily. Yosenju also could easily OTK if they were caught without Valkyrus in hand. I ended up bubbling because my losses were early rounds so my tiebreakers were pretty bad, but it's still my favorite regional memory.
damn, this format would be really cool is konami never printed any cards that say "your opponent cannot ..." and also didn't short print cards

I made a "masked hero six samurai" to play against this nekroz deck. If I went first, it was an instant win because my end board were almost always darklaw and naturia beast/shien

Nekroz was really expensive when it dropped cus of how consistent the deck was at making it bords and how broken the rituals were for it"s time and tell this day it is one of favorite decks wish it would get some sapport so I can dust off my nekroz play them again
Not to mention they murdered all the decks that even had a sliver of a chance against Nekroz on the F/L list.
I do love this format, my friends and i enjoy them a lot, i still love the nekroz till my death

Every game I scythe lock my opponents at locals I always like to ask them in siding “Hey I will side out my djinn if you side out yours”
I quit playing for 3 years or so roughly a year before necroz came out, so this is very new to me. Glad i missed out on this format even though nekroz is a cool deck
okay, I know that this format wasn't the best...but as a ritual player this sooooooooo vindicated me! this and drytron! and now I feel more confident playing my libromancers and even mikanko
Weird. Yosenju was my main deck back in the day, but I don't remember encountering nekroz much. Is it one of those super expensive decks?

You say this is when Yugioh died, however, this was some good stuff. Kind of like GOATs, it's very interactive. The Djinn lock is kind of scummy, but still not horrible. This is one of my favourite formats now, for sure.

Not at anything more competitive than a fairly casual locals. Their strongest board would be like Unicore, Areadbhair, and Vanity's Ruler which is so easily broken by meta standards that it's not even funny. And that's assuming completely uninterrupted, when the deck can't really play through multiple hand traps. A properly timed Ash or Droll shuts the entire deck down. You could maybe run a Dogmatika version splashing White Zoa and run Mega-Zaborg to completely destroy an opponents ED and just rely on floodgates to carry you otherwise. That still runs into the same hand trap problem though.
Unicore is okay against Tear, they also have Sophia which locks the extra deck during the main phase on a quick effect. It plays well with Dogmatika, but even then the deck is just too slow to keep up in the current format. Keldo and Mudora shuffling back your graveyard is basically a death sentence. The deck couldn’t reliably break a board assembled by any deck from the past 2 years, and it certainly doesn’t stand a change going second against Tearlaments.
i was there on release date when a few guys at my locals bought 4 displays and made full power nekroz halve a day after release
