    I love what Eller Coltrane says here. "Life itself without anything explosive or tragic, must be more exciting then we let on."

    If you call "Boyhood" a gimmick, it means you are COMPLETELY missing the point of this film.

    Boyhood was such a marvelous film, if Birdman beats it for Best Picture at the Oscars I'll be devastated

      I don't think i could handle that. Any other year I'd love AGI to win for Birdman because its a directorial masterpiece, but Linklater's efforts must not be denied

      Looking more likely that it's AGI's year

      He's got the Director's Guild yes, and thats the biggest, but Linklater has every other director award so far. It'll be very close - both men have equal but slightly different claims to the same sort of story that won Cuaron the Oscar last year.

      Luke McGowan meh, the 12 years trick was awesome... apart from that, it was an average movie at best. Yes, i get the "life lessons", which we have seen in countless movies before, but still, a movie that only stands out from one trick, isn't that good... Birdman, without the one shot style, would have been oscar material anyways, boyhood without the 12 year old trick...well....Yes, would be a forgettable movie

    It took 12 years to them to win the Critics Choice.
    It took 12 years to them to win the BAFTA.
    It took 12 years to them to lose the Oscar.

      That year had movies with equal chances to win, like Boyhood, Whiplash, The Theory of Everything.
      I supported Boyhood too, but it was a duel of giants.

    I feel a bit gutted, because when the story broke about Linklater making this film that took 12 years to film, i think i first heard about it maybe 6 years ago.
    I knew, from just hearing that as a unique selling point, that its almost never been done before, aside from Truffaut doing it. That this could easily be Linklater's chance for an Oscar. And i would put him at the moment right at the front of the pack, along with the best film. That i should have placed a bet on it winning one of these top 3 awards.
    I would be EXTREMELY surprised if it didn't win best pic, or best director.. Or both even.
    And Patricia Arquette has the best supporting actress Oscar in the bag i would say.

    • @LaRay82
      @LaRay82 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Apted did it with his docu-drama film series "Up", where he followed the same family every 7 years over decades. Linklater calls "Up" one of his inspirations for this film.

    • @rorrt
      @rorrt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LaRay82
      But that was really a documentary. A bit like "Child of Our Time" by Robert Winston.
      But i don't doubt it was an inspiration but its not quite the same as a narrative story.

    • @LaRay82
      @LaRay82 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but if you watch Up, you will find that Apted maintained a narrative and kept all the characters in play quite brilliantly. It is not a dry documentary, but a series of evocative films that has you completely invested in the characters.

    • @LaRay82
      @LaRay82 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rorrt
      It seems like Linklater's greatest challenge was maintaining the emotional continuity and consistency of the characters over 12 years. And that's not as hard to do as is being imagined. Ask any director of a film delayed over 5-6 years, and they will tell you that emotional continuity is the first thing they take care of. I think Boyhood's greatness lies not in this 12 year idea but in the little moments captured so exquisitely by RL. Patricia Arquette's "I thought there would be more" scene has haunted me since September when I first watched the film.

    • @rorrt
      @rorrt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LaRay82
      I totally agree.
      In describing the film "well, its filmed over 12 years", makes that part of the film sound so much like a gimmick. But the film plays it so beautifully.
      And though its not super duper plot heavy, it meanders and sways. But in a way that it didn't seem pretentious to me.

    • @mrxxbrian
      @mrxxbrian 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to agree. Boyhood has some of the greatest dedication in film history but the story and characters arent anything special although still touching. I expect Best Director will go to Inarritu and Best Picture to Boyhood

    • @andresbecerra1183
      @andresbecerra1183 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think it either works on a person or it doesn't work on a person (which is different than saying the obnoxiously pretentious "you just didn't get it" comment). It comes down to, as Coltrane so eloquently puts it, vulnerability. If it makes you feel as vulnerable as the characters you are watching as their lives unfold, then it the movie does have a profoundly moving effect on you. For me that was exactly what happened. There were a few moments where it got tedious, maybe repetitive, but the craftsmanship was always there, and the story really is as simple as the title. I loved it, and think it does deserve every accolade it's getting. If you didn't enjoy it, that's perfectly fine. I would suggest giving it another chance in a few years.

    • @andresbecerra1183
      @andresbecerra1183 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He doesn't even mean explosions and car chases. He means that life can be worth it without anything extreme or dramatic. Or without necessarily having over the top achievements

    No one cares about the baftas anyway, the SAGS are far more relevant as far as which films will have more chances at the oscars and Birdman took the big prize, I don't get this boyhood cliche thing about a coming of age white middle class american boy, sounds awful boring.

    Everyone is loosing their minds over boyhood just because of the way it was filmed. That doesnt make up for it being about something rather mundane. One or two strong performances dont make it a great movie.

    • @landondonovanify
      @landondonovanify 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah... its so much more than that. Also everyone is loosing their minds about the way Birdman was filmed too.

    • @landondonovanify
      @landondonovanify 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But not in film and this is a film. And it's not great because it was filmed over 12 years, that's just the great concept for it's greatness.
