    I shall never a week-long 'Cathedral Course' in 1976 at St George's Cathedral, Cape Town, with a hand-picked, cathedral-sized choir with trebles and new repertoire for Evensong each night of the week, with Simon as director. I learnt so much from him, and his musicality, energy and superb direction have remained with me ever since, now almost half a century ago. He was the consummate musician -- and great fun to unwind with after each day's service.

    I love Simon. We've lost touch in recent years, unfortunately. I had the pleasure of spending plenty of time with him - carousing for sure! - but I had a few lessons with him which were really a terrific experience. I wasn't a beginner in those days though when we met in 93 in Calgary and again in 94. He was enormously supportive, encouraging and just a blast to hang out with!!! I remember Naji Hakim's Rhapsody for Organ Duet was hot off the press. I went to a local music store that had a copy in stock, bought it and Simon and I got together and sat down to sight read it! Amazing memories!!!

      Very interesting. In a way, maybe both you and Jean Claude are right. Sometimes Bach makes me feel that here is something as close to perfection as man has ever come, so yes, what a gift and life couldn't be better. But then of course the music is also so deep delving, so profound that it seems to probe life's most difficult questions and challenge you to understand. So in a way it's uncomfortable and confrontational, but I'm never sorry to be challenged in this way, and whether or not I think I've completely followed it, I always feel elevated after.

    A wonderfully clear and lively performance of these unique trio sonatas, where one player is the trio and right and left hands and feet have to sustain completely independent lines, the musical equivalent of flying a helicopter but harder than that. Also a lovely choice of registrations on a fine organ.

      @garydranch2014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine is Bwv 527. That said it is fascinating to compare different interpretations by different organists and organs. Preston’s interpretation is more secco, less legato in the first movement than some others (cf. Havinga), this approach while more minimalist and understated allows clarity of voicing and expression to come through without any tendency toward romanticism or personality. It is the music above all else which reigns supreme and doesn’t require any amplification of any kind in terms of the voicing égalité. It is after a Trio Sonata form of three equal and distinct voices. The second movement is likewise fairly understated, as Preston felt the music did not require any amplification of voicing or rubato of any phrase. The last movement is sheer joy.

      @@michaelhaslam6089 the trio sonatas were written for "two keyboards and pedal". this description is verified by forkel in his bio also. in bachs day that would have been either an organ, or a harpsichord with pedal. i dont know if there were clavichords with pedal, but i would not doubt it. bach is said to have written these for his son WF bach preparing him to be the fine organist he was. later in his life CPE bach spoke of playing these and how beautiful they still were decades later. i am not a fan of "tooty" sounding organs playing these, but that seems to be the registration used. im fine with hearing other instruments play these, especially classical guitars.

    Everything is beautiful but I think that Simon Person is always on the verge of being too fast and that to the detriment of music. Through his chosen vey fast tempi he is always above the very real and normal one. That's just my opinion.

    The tempi are mostly steeple-chase, historically uninformed. This is the speed Czerny played WTK as fast as possible. Just because the action of the organ here permits it, the speed is doubled. These trio sonatas are what Wilhelm Friedeman had with him when he left for Dresden and had to improvise the rest of the organ music for thirteen years! so that they looked forward to what his father thought was the new wave of music. Doesnt mean that the tempo was to be measured in light years. They are old hat now, so let's hurry through with them?

    Johann Sebastian Bach? Seine Orgelwerke verstehe ich etwas anders interpretiert. Letzter Satz enorm zerhackt.
    Grossteils wie auf Klavier/Flügel gespielt.

      Pas d’accord d’après mon commentaire. Mais c’est surtout dans la musique une question d’esthétique et de goût, et il y n’y a pas d’absolue sur cela. Moi-même j’ai tendance à apprécier une interprétation mieux que toutes autre sur le moment et plus tard en écoutant la même interprétation, me demander comment j’ai pu penser d’une telle façon. C’est d’ailleurs très commun de changer d’avis puisque la vie et les expériences que nous ressentions nous poussent à voir les choses d’une différente manière.
