    Avantages of the whipped kick of Taekwondo / Karate:
    1. speed 2. more difficult to be defended by the opponent as it is less predictable 3. it doesn't leave you so vulnerable if you make a miss 4. facilitates kicking sequences 5. excellent for long distance 6. concentrates all energy in a single point generating localized and intense damage
    Advantages of the Muay Thai inertial kick:
    1. less chance of injury due to the use of shin 2. simpler execution 3. excellent for mid-range blows 4. facilitates punch and kick sequences 5. generates less concentrated damage reaching a larger area 6. not only generates damage but also displacement
    Regarding the power generated, there is no "superiority" between one technique or another, so the damage produced depends on the application. Usually the shin kick generates more damage due to the application by the Muay Thai athletes aiming at this, but the whipped kick also generates as much damage as if it is used with the intention of producing power, not just to get points.

    I have been teaching flexibility and strength for a long time. The ease with which Paris kicks-off both legs-is truly impressive. This guy (the coach) could kick you almost anywhere from almost any place. Very impressive and Jerry you look good with that mask on too!

    Also I love how it's always Muay Thai vs. everything else. Like Muaythai vs karate, tai Kwon do, and Kung Fu, together.

    I did tkd for 11 years, I like to use the snap for my lead leg and switch kicks, while my back leg is my "power" leg much like a jab and a straight right

    We learn both at the dutch kickboxing gym I go to. We take the snap kicks from Kyukushin and we take the good strong roundhouse kicks from Muay Thai. Different application for both. My lead instructor describes the snap kicks as being more like a sniper rifle, where you have to be precise for them to be useful while the Thai Roundhouse is the shotgun that's just going to blast straight through what ever is in the way. Still we set up a lot around those snap kicks they can be lethal when done right. Specially when combined with some really solid boxing. More or less every kick we throw is set up with our hands too.

    Me with a Kyokushin karate background...when I shadowbox I like mixing some muay thai with karate kicks. Personally, I love how muay Thai low or body round kicks drive that shin and dig it right into the muscle somewhat similar to Kyokushin except there's a snap to it. Basically, use muay Thai kicks to throw some powerful kick combination, while use karate kicks if you want to perform fast combos from the chamber. One karate kick combo I really like is performing a fake roundhouse to a twist kick to a sidekick. If say I want to mix it up, I'd consider throwing a really fast low/high muay Thai kick so I can carry on that momentum to my spinning wheel/hook kick or maybe a tornado or maybe a spinning side kick etc

    Poor Jerry 😂 Seems like a workout just holding the pads for him. Makes me feel bad for the guy holding them for Mike Tyson.
    I dig how organized, yet aggressive Paris is. My favorite part was when he said dont retreat after the snap kick, use that to either lead in to another attack or prepare for a block. After I get my skills up and practice fighting someone that's like 6'3, sparing w him seems like it'd be awesome

    For headkicks, I've seen the snapping being more successful. The leg has plenty of power to knock out, accuracy that is the issue.

    Over all explanation was superb I learned a lot.
    Didn’t take the forward cross step with MT kick. Yes you can do it without but I disagree this being officially traditional.
    Personally I like a back kick or axe kick after missed Thai kick.
    Loved the slide in never consider this technique.

    Fantastic vid showing the benefits of both styles. From my lowly experience I’d always say for leg kicks MT is much more effective, but slipping head kicks through guard etc TKD is much more versatile. I started with TKD but now train only MT and find that TKD compliments MT and adds a few more tools.

    Coach Paris has excellent kicks. Good flexibility and long legs. Although I disagree with separating kicks as either snapping or follow through. It's a spectrum with many varieties. The perfect kick should be a blend of the two

      @@Sporkonafork1 from what I've seen what makes the golden kick special is it's deceptive ability to begin linear and rotate last minute as opposed to entering with a wide trajectory. This is one example of a stereotypical typical kick seen in tkd that is used by high level MT guys. I myself use a variation of this method but add some complexity.

      Agree with the other comments.
      Dim mak is more of a subset of theories in some Asian martial arts style ranging from metaphysical pressure point "meridiens" (similar to what you see in acupuncture) to target points of vulnerability.
      There is some legitimacy in pressure points. In muay Thai you would target specific areas like the top of the head, chin/jaw, temple, sternum, and nerve in the leg for leg kicks.
      In BJJ and similar grappling arts, you go for the carodit artery for a choke via triangle choke, lapel chokes, mata leao (aka rear naked choke), etc. That, in theory, is a pressure point attack.
      Unfortunately, there has been a lot of flimflam when it comes to dim mak. Claims of "one touch" knockouts and other absurdity that has been debunked (aka George Dillman).
      A big problem with a pressure point attack is that it is hard to apply on a moving target. It's hard enough to hit a broad area of a moving target but even harder to attack a single point even if you can subdue an opponent and control them on the ground. That's why even in BJJ something like a "nutcracker choke" (driving your fist or thumbs directly into the carotid artery) rarely works because the opponent will thrash around.
      The other problem is that even legitimate sensitive points do not often work due to factors such as people's pain thresholds or adrenaline. I remember when I was a young teen when everyone was on the kung fu bandwagon that there was an older kung fu man demonstrating a chin-na pressure point hold (I think it was pressure on the radial nerve on the arm). A couple of fellows subjected their arms for a demo and started wincing in pain so, curious, I offered up my arm and the old fellow applied the hold but I could not feel it. He tried again, this time searching for the exact pressure point on my arm (in which time I could have hit him four times if I was a mugger!). He applied the pressure point again but it was more irritating than it was painful. I pretended that it hurt so as not to embarrass the guy or hurt his feelings.
      Bottomline, although there are sensitive points and nerves that can be exploited I, personally, would not rely on attacking them in a self-defence situation. The best pressure point attack in a self-defence situation is a good right cross to the opponent's chin!

    A "karate roundhouse" is technically a variation of the front snapkick, hence it works the best when aimed with the ball of the foot to a lower abdomen (unless you want to go Kyokushin with head kicks).

    Good video. Coach Paris seems to be a "full combat sport martial arts" kind of guy, from what I see here. But let's talk self-defense applications a bit too. Kicks do have their place there (sometimes), if you know what you are doing.

    Muay Thai kicks are good vs a target that is looking to square off with you in a standing fight, but nearly impossible to hit against a mobile target looking to just charge-tackle you or slip away from you to utilize a weapon (such as a stick or car antenna). Low kicks to the leg wear down the target over time; they aren't great for self defense. Kicks to the body CAN work, but generally one kick won't do it. If you throw a Muay Thai kick in a self defense situation, it should be a surprise kick to the head -- your attacker should not even know that you CAN kick like that, until they wake up and groggily recall what happened to them. Otherwise it's not a good kick. You can too easily get knocked off balance and even if you land the kick it doesn't do enough. Keep in mind that in self defense, your best equalizer vs ambush is that at least the attacker doesn't know what you know how to do. You want the first kick they see to be the kick that stops them.

    Snapping roundhouse kicks can be thrown at range but lack any sort of power, so they should actually NEVER be thrown except to the target's loose ribs -- its the one place where a snapping roundhouse can end the fight even if you don't land the shot perfectly. The aim is to use the ball of your foot and connect with just one or two loose ribs, not crash your whole leg against the ribcage where the force will be distributed. You should always instead throw a front snap kick if you can, since your base is behind the kick. It does much more damage and can be thrown at the face or solar plexus as well. The usual reasons to throw the snapping roundhouse instead are that you are either out of position to throw the snap kick or trying to sneak it under the attacker's elbows (which is harder to do with a snap kick; their forearm may contact your shin). Definitely you want shoes on for the snapping roundhouse to the ribs, since there is risk of hitting your toes on the attacker's elbow. Otherwise it might not be the best attack to go for as you defend yourself.
    ...
    And of course as with all self defense, be ready to flee the attacker into a public area where many people would see them pursue if they don't let you escape. Try to stay in good shape to run, with an emphasis on good cardio when running at high speeds. You want to be a MUCH better runner than your attacker, so that even if they catch you they are too tired to still attack you while you are still able to defend yourself. If running isn't an option for you (it isn't for me due to some health issues), remember to stay calm when under attack. You will buy yourself at least 3--4 minutes (as many as 7 is possible for the average person) of "fighting back" energy before the fatigue hits, and those precious minutes might be long enough for your attacker to tire out. I find that the best way to stay calm in a panic situation is to do all movements small and light until the very moment they must be strong. You want to try and relax to maintain fine motor skill.

      Both Kathy Long & Erik Paulson do this, it reduces consistent shin damage and works based on an MMA style where the opponent has to be wary of take downs. Its not necessary ment for a straight Mauy Thai match and is only an option if you have time to do it. But both practitioners have used it with success, so it is usable technique with practice.

      Lots of super high-level Muay Thai fighters do this, but I agree its definitely a technique that requires a bit of experience

    Muay Thai kicks are very powerful, but very slow. In JKD we could easily stop those kicks very quickly and effectively.

    Snapping round kick must be thrown to the head to force a block or set it up with punches, don’t lead with a kicks unless is super powerful like micko cro cop.... if it didn’t create much damage kick to body or legs... many people will happily eat the kicks to the body or legs to do boxing with you...just like Cung Le KO Rich Franklin

    I don't know who the guy at the start of the video is but why is he dangling his foot for so long after a snap kick? That's absolutely not how you do a snap kick.
    I mean, why would you dangle your foot for so long after you do the kick? Who even does that?

      I get that the guy likes the follow through kick(so do I) but the way he showed the snap kick is not much better than the mcdojos showing self defense moves.

      It doesn't take a martial artist to know that you shouldn't dangle your foot after you kick.

    Not a great explanation of karate kicks, only explained kicking for points where the purpose is to compete in skill while harming your opponent as little as possible, did not explain karate kicks for self defense or full contact. These things are completely different and require a more lengthy in depth explanation
