    sweet... looks kinda okay? usually just use lanshan inner as groundsheet in midge season, hang it very sloppily when needed. changing tarp config if wind changes is so rare with TS but found it super easy, barely an inconvenience that one time actually done it but tbh didn't really have to, thing is solid as a rock.

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lanshan inner could be a shout actually, it won't be perfect but I take it that you'll hang it from the centre mitten hook? 🤔

    Love my TrailStar when there are no bugs around and I can use it with a just a groundsheet. But the shallow walls really do make it difficult to fit any human-shaped bug shelter. I do have a bespoke inner, but it's a pain to install at the end of a long day, and the total weight takes the combination well outside the outralight range...

    • @WalkWithWallace

      @@tullochgorum6323 I sometimes regret selling it, to date its still my most used shelter. A bug inner kind of defeats the purpose of having a tarp too.

    Ive just got my first tarp and been looking at vids. I struggle to get my head around why people put an inner inside that basicslly makes it a tent and therefore why you dont just buy a tent as it all adds to the weight and suddenly youre up at the weight of a decent tent thats ten times easier to put up 🤷🏼‍♂️ just my thoughts but what do i know 😂

      I agree 100% mate, I suppose in Scotland we have midge to contend with which renders the tarp useless without an inner but I loved the freedom of just using the bathtub groundsheet. I regret selling this. :(

    @thedaftestnameicouldthinko8233 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Trailstar is an excellent shelter and highly wind resistant but it’s expensive for what you get - five triangles of silnylon. Wind passing the catenary cut openings at the back and sides draw draughts in through the front. Coming from a Golite Cave and a GG SpinnSolo, I found the Trailstar a bit claustrophobic! But, I’ve got used to it. Its footprint is huge. In heathery areas with tiny patches of grass, I’ve ended up with pegs on the far side of a little stream. Despite these downsides, I love the Trailstar or did till recently when I bought a Duomid, which is even nicer.
    BTW, I pitch my Trailstar down to the ground and with the front pegs closer than you do, for a higher, narrower door way.
    I have an MLD Bug Bivy and cannot see how to use it with the Trailstar (or Duomid) without rigging lines inside. Rigging lines inside is not a great idea in windy conditions as it stiffens up the seams and stops them from deforming to let gusts past. The result was pegs pulling out till I took down the washing line.
    The carabiner is a good idea as the Trailstar can turn into a wide-open, fine weather shelter by moving the long guy line to a corner. The resulting shape is a little bit like a Baker tent.
    Apologies for the pedantry. I enjoyed the video.

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers for the feedback, I've seen other people make the entrance narrower but taller too. This makes it more winter proof as the way I pitch it in this video, it collects snow and sags, so you have to get out and scrap the snow off. Woke up once with silnylon in my face due to the weight of the snow built up over night.
      I've had to pitch over rocks, but never a stream. There's no perfect shelter I guess. Probably why most of us have 2-3 different tents.

      Probably heading into Fisherfield from Poolewe and some Corbetts and maybe Munros. Would like to get back out to Tarf area and also down Loch Lomond way as haven't been there in a few years. Doubt the hostel situation is going to be the best going forward so best step up the camping game, eh.

    Do you have any sagging issues on any of the pannels? I purchased one and have set it up twice, not using the middle pannel stake points, just the 5 corners and have noticable sag toward the entrance and lower corners. This is even after tensioning the guys and even re-staking.

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always managed a tight as a drum pitch. When you first pitch it, I find you have to walk around the tarp and readjust each peg until each panel is taut. Make sure your guylines are loosened off before pitching, so you can tighten the linelocs afterwards to make it taut as possible. Hope that makes sense?

    • @Callahan1
      @Callahan1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have tried this about 5 times now and it seems like I always end up with extra sag on one or 2 areas. Every video I have seen the sag is almost nonexistant. Do you walk the 2 corners toward the door end, and then also move the 2 door corners inward roughly 2 inch each?
      Or do you simply make sure each of the 5 corners follows its own stitching and goes straight out? This sag is driving me insane.

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Callahan1 that would do my nut in too. I always do the rudimentary pitch first and just walk around adjusting each point. Where are you typically getting the sag, on one of the front panels by the door?

    • @Callahan1
      @Callahan1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WalkWithWallace Yeah it's usually the front after the other half opposite door side is taut. The sag will sometimes exist at the bottom, in between the back pannels too(opposite of door side). Will try some more this weekend..
      You can see what I mean by taking a look at this guy's trailstar in this video... th-cam.com/video/gM_7JMQIL_M/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugwjk5W4_qHvpeDoV0F4AaABAg.9By0wODapvU9C-jiXqNDM0
